December 27, 2009 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
It is from our families that most of us first learn about God’s love for us. The Christian family is a domestic church because it is a community of faith, hope and charity. Within their
families, most children first learn to be loved and to love; a reflection of God’s love for them. Protecting the sanc-tity of families and helping them in times of trouble is a major goal of the Church.

“The family is the privileged setting where every person learns to give and receive love… The family is an intermediate institution be-tween individuals and society, and nothing can completely take its place… The family is a necessary good for peoples, and treasure for couples. It is a unique good for children, who are meant to be the fruit of the love, of the total and generous self-giving of their parents… The family is also a school which enables men and women to grow to the full measure of their hu-manity… O God, who in the Holy Family left us a perfect model for family life lived in faith and obedience to your will, help us to be exam-ples of faith and love for your command-ments.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

Dear Parishioners, Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph We are blessed to have loving families here in our parish. As we celebrate this Sunday within the Octave of Christmas dedicated to the Holy Family of Nazareth, we are reminded by this annual cele-bration that God’s blessings come to our society by way of the family. The late and great Pope John Paul II, wrote in an Apostolic Letter entitled Letter to Families for the 1994 International Year of the Family, that we “owe to the family our very existence as an individual.” Each of us is “particular, unique and unre-peatable” as a person. We recognize the great truth that “although families have roles and functions, the main value in families is in the relationships, which are irreplaceable.” John Paul II stated: “The future of the world and of the Church passes through the family” (Apostolic Exhortation On the Family). It was Father Patrick Peyton, a Holy Cross Priest, who coined the phrase “the family that prays together stays together.” This is sound advice as we enter into the New Year of 2010. So keep trying to be a holy family. During this New Year of 2010, ask God our Father to help you live as the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, united in respect and love. So that He can bring all of you to the joy and peace of the eternal home of heaven. Many years ago, my niece wrote a poem entitled Our Family. Our family is a beautiful thing, the laughter, the love and the joy it brings. When we’re together or when we’re apart, we’re bound by the feelings we have in our hearts. In crisis and turmoil, sadness and pain, in anger and tragedy love still remains. And through all the bad times, we’ve all stayed together. And through them we’ve learned that our lives are much better. We have each other; we’re never alone, to love and to lean on when we’re on our own. Our hearts full of love though we don’t always show it. Deep down inside all of us know it. Our family is a beautiful thing. The most wonderful gift any Christmas could bring. Here is another piece of advice that has been around for many years. CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE If a child lives with criticism, he/she learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he/she learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, he/she learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame, he/she learns to feel guilty. If a child lives with tolerance, he/she learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement, he/she learns to have confidence. If a child lives with praise, he/she learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he/she learns justice. If a child lives with security, he/she learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval, he/she learns to like himself/herself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he/she learns to find love in the world. (Author is anonymous)

Heritage of Faith-Vision of Hope The Campaign for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. To meet the spiritual and material demands of today while preparing for the future, the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia has launched an historic capital and endowment campaign. Heritage of Faith-Vision of Hope will be conducted in all 270 parishes from September 2008 through June 2010 and will address the most pressing needs of the Church. The programs, services, and fa-cilities supported by these funds will significantly influ-ence the scope of our mission long into the future. The challenge is great, but so too, are the faith, hope and generosity of the people of the Archdiocese of Philadel-phia. Parishes will participate in the campaign in one of four phases. Every Catholic household in the Archdiocese will be asked to prayerfully consider making a sacrifi-cial pledge to Heritage of Faith-Vision of Hope. We are blessed with a generous community that comes to-gether with a common heart and spirit. Through your participation, your stewardship, and your generosity, we can serve the needs of our people, and pass on our heri-tage to future generations, who will also experience God’s love and live in the light of His life here in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Our parish is scheduled to take part in phase IV of the campaign beginning in early 2010. Think about becoming part of a Campaign team for our parish.
Prayer For Priests
Ever-living God and Father of
us all, You give to Your Church the Priesthood of Your Son, Jesus, and by the power of the Holy
Spirit, You provide holy priests for a holy people. We pray for all our priests, who announce the Word of God and celebrate the Sacraments,
For those who are young and those who are old, For those who serve in difficult and trying
circumstances, For those who are faithful and those who are
faltering, and For those who have died.
We entrust all our priests to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
That they may persevere with fidelity to You and to Your Church.
With Saint John Vianney, patron of priests, and Saint Charles Borromeo, we pray that our priests
may never fail to lead us to You. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen.
