Q. Will I be assigned an advisor?

A: Yes. For your freshman year, you are assigned to an advisor in the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience. Following your freshman year, however, you will be “assigned” to all of our Academic Counselors in the School of Business, as we have a centralized advising system. Additionally, we have an Online Advising System (OAS) at www.olemissbusiness.com/oas that provides you with 24/7 access to advising. This system allows you to submit a proposed schedule at your convenience, and an Academic Counselor reviews your submission and responds to you with approval and suggestions. You may always schedule an appointment to see an Academic Counselor through the Appointment Scheduler link that is provided to you upon submission of your OAS.

Q: What is the average class size in the School of Business?

A: That depends on the type of class. Courses that cover the fundamental principles of Finance, Management, Marketing, and Management Information Systems may range from 60 to 130 students depending on the section you choose. These class sizes are larger because they are required by all Business majors as well as other majors across campus. Major-specific courses are relatively smaller, often ranging in size from 20 to 70 students.

Q: What GPA will be required for me to graduate?

A: There are different types of GPA requirements for graduation. Students must earn a 2.0 in all work attempted (UM and transfer), a 2.0 in all Business and Accountancy courses, and a 2.0 in all major work (as well, Management majors are required to earn a grade of “C” or better in each Management course).

Q: Are scholarships available through the School of Business?

A: Yes. We have over 60 scholarships available to incoming freshmen and continuing students that range in value from $500- $10,000. Students may apply for these scholarships during the spring semester by submitting an application avaliable at olemissbusiness.com.

This major will expose students to the role and impact of international trade, the impact of monopoly on the economy, and the problems of unemployment and inflation.

General Business - The General Business degree offers students the flexibility of specializing in an academic interest outside the School of Business, while establishing a solid foundation in business principles, providing an avenue to success in many different disciplines. This versatile degree includes a minor outside the School of Business, as well as an internship or international study. A number of courses in the major are offered online to help students create a differentiated, individualized and attractive portfolio of experiences and skill sets to present to employers.

Marketing - In addition to basic courses suchas marketing principles, consumer behavior, global marketing, and marketing research, marketing majors can pursue their studies in such diverse topics as professional selling, sales management, services marketing, and legal/ethical/social issues in marketing, among others. Graduates typically follow careers in personal selling, marketing research, retailing, advertising, and public relations with manufacturing or service firms.

Management - The Management curriculum isbroad in nature and designed to provide pro-fessional education for management positions in private and public organizations. study abroad

Study abroad is an opportunity to spend a number of weeks or months living in an area you’ve only seen on maps and immersing yourself in a culture completely different from your own. You can escape the world view you’ve grown up with, break out of a comfort zone, and redefine yourself in count-less ways. You can learn at universities renowned throughout the world. You can make friends who are incredibly different from you in every way.

There are a number of programs offered to students and things you should consider when deciding where and when you study abroad. Research your options, get some advice, and try not to let your excitement and anticipa-tion overshadow all of your rational judgment!

When you think you’re ready for a more personal discussion about study abroad, make appointments with your Academic Counselor and a Study Abroad Advisor. Make sure that you leave yourself enough time to get all the information you need. If you’re thinking of studying abroad during your junior year, you should begin looking in the middle of your sophomore year (at the very latest). Keep in mind that there are generally two types of study abroad programs: Those that are sponsored and perhaps even run by Ole Miss and those that are run by other universities and accredited by Ole Miss. The Study Abroad Office can give you lots of individual program information: Host countries and universities, lengths, costs, and any unique features, such as special scholarships. While you’ll probably go in with an idea of where you want to study, keep your options open and really be sure to explore possibilities with your Academic Counselor and your Study Abroad Advisor.

InternshipsAn internship is a short term job that provides you with experience in the occupation or industry that you are considering for a ca-reer. It may be for a summer, a semester or a time period agreed upon between an employer, a student and/or the school.

They can be paid or unpaid and for college credit in some majors. If you are looking for credit, you must plan in advance.

There are different ways to find an internship, including:

Networking: The first place to look is often the most obvious...professors, family, friends, alumni. They are usually the most willing to share their advice and their contacts, and they are the beginning of your network.

EmployUM: The University of Mississippi Career Center offers their services to enrolled students and lists job openings, internships, and on-campus interviews available to students who register with them.

Internships.com: Internships.com offers listings for internships in over 12,000 companies and is a free resource for students of the University of Mississippi; the password for Ole Miss students is “Rebels.”

Direct Communication: If you are interested in a particular company, research the company and contact them directly to find out if they offer an internship. Many Ole Miss students have obtained incredible internships because they pursued them - you will not know until you ask.
