FROM YOUR PASTOR’S

HEARTThe Fourth of July always brings many friends and family home for the big Alderson

celebration. I pray that we have a blessed celebration this year that is Derecho free and fun filled! I want to thank Dell, Nancy, the choir, and Mark Taylor for their excellent work in presenting “Faith Under Fire” on June 30. They set the tone for our July 4th celebration of freedom by reminding us of the faith and music on which our great nation was founded.

This year is flying by. I want to highlight three opportunities that will be here before you know it.VBS Now! – This year our VBS Director is SarahEllen Dillion. She is a college student home for the summer from Alderson Broaddus College. In addition to leading our VBS, SarahEllen works as a summer youth leader for Energy Express in Alderson. We are thankful for her willing leadership in planning and conducting this year’s Bible school. Please be in prayer for her and her team as they prepare for VBS July 14-18.Noah This Fall! – We have had good interest and several reservations for our trip to see “Noah” in Lancaster, PA this October. Consider joining us for this exciting fall fellowship trip.Women’s Conference Next Spring! – Our ladies are in the initial planning stages for an important ministry action to the ladies of our community. Please consider how you may be a part of this local missions outreach to the ladies of Alderson.

Avoiding Temptation 101

The August Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will be Saturday, August 3 at 8am at the River of Life Church of God.

A mother and her young son were walking through a mall when she suggested they go into a toy store to buy a birthday gift for the boy’s friend.

“No, Mommy, I can’t go in there,” he protested. “I’ll see something I want and can’t have. Then I’ll cry. So it’s just better if I don’t go in.”

Temptation wasn’t yet in this boy’s vocabulary, but he sure knew what it was. More impressively, he knew what to do about it.

Follow the boy’s example: Don’t put yourself into vulnerable positions in the first place. For “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41b, NRSV).

Our Finance Team monitors our church budget and spending. Thank you for your regular tithes and special offerings. Each month, we want to present an overview of where we are financially.

General Fund for the Month Ended May 31, 2013Beginning Balance $ 10,094.24 + Total Income $ 9,359.23 + Build the Treasury $ 1,292.00 + Interest $ 1.23 − Total Expenses $ 9,595.36Ending Balance $ 11,151.34

2013 Offering Totals as of June 23, 2013Build The Treasury Goal: $18,000 Received: $8,373 (47%)America for Christ Goal: $ 2,013 Received: $1,204 (60%)One Great Hour Goal: $ 1,500 Received: $1,063 (71%)

Build The Treasury – In 2013 our planned budget needs require sustained BTT giving of $18,000 above our basic tithes for the entire year ($1,500/month). Our BTT challenge for 2013 is on track at this point in the year, but we must continue to sustain our uncommon giving to the glory of God.

Mission Offerings – In 2013 the goals and giving to our two mission offerings so far have been below normal. We must continue to pray and

give to these important offerings that support the work of God’s kingdom in the United States and around the world.

Thank you for giving to Build The Treasury, our Building Fund, and missions offerings—over and above your regular tithe. We faithfully continue to care for our church facility and to reach out to the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.

AMA Summer Work Teams UpdateOur Alderson Ministerial Association (AMA) is sponsoring three work teams in our community this summer and sent one team to New Jersey.

Calvary Baptist Church, Seaville, NJ – This group of American Baptists was with us from May 1-5. They worshiped with us on Sunday, May 5. They installed new windows in two homes and repaired, scraped, and painted the exterior of a third home. They did an amazing amount of work in just four days. We thank God for their efforts and friendship.

Alderson Work Team – A work team comprised of Bob Holliday, Sam Groves, Dave Highlander, and Anthony Carter travelled June 2-7 to the Tom’s River area of New Jersey in response to a call for volunteers to help repair Hurricane Sandy damage. Pastor Bill was unable to go with them due to illness. Their work was part of the effort “Coming Together for New Jersey: Rebuild, Renew and Restore,” which is being coordinated through our ABC, USA Home Mission Society and ABC, New Jersey. Bob Holliday gave the congregation an excellent report of their efforts during worship on Sunday, June 8. Pray this will be the first of many opportunities for us to go out to meet needs in other communities.

First Presbyterian Church, Honesdale, PA – This group will be with us from July 14-19. Led by Chris Scheuerll, they will consist of about twenty high school students and their adult leaders. They are open to help with a variety of projects. Pastor Bill will coordinate this group of volunteers.

Pray for AMA leaders and volunteers who will facilitate the teams’ efforts during their weeks of service.

Pray for the teams to have safe travel and safety as they work. Pray for God to be glorified in all that is done in His name.

God is opening the doors for an exciting women’s event in 2014. Our board has approved a request for our church to sponsor a Women’s Spiritual Conference for the Alderson community in spring 2014. A committee to plan and coordinate this community event is now being formed. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, July 10 at 5:30pm in the church parlor. Anyone who feels they may like to be a part of this committee, please contact Deborah Bryan.

??? Bible Quiz ???Many people travel for leisure during the summer. In Bible days, travel was most often done out of necessity. Scripture records many notable journeys.Match the people in the left-hand column with their correct travels in the right-hand column.
