HERITAGECENTRE
GREAT CENTRALRAILWAY MUSEUM
It’s time for Bridging theGap part two!The Great Central is working toreconnect two halves of the railway tocreate an eighteen mile heritage line. You’ve already helped us to build a newbridge across the Midland Main Line. Now it’s time to work on the next part ofthe project. We’re raising half a millionpounds to restore the canal bridge atLoughborough and to finish the designwork for the rest of the reunificationscheme.
CROSSINGTHE CANAL
CROSSINGTHE CANAL
The project to reunifytwo halves of the GreatCentral Railway is oneof the most ambitiousundertaken by any
heritage railway.Despite this, millions have
pounds have already been raised and abrand new bridge built over the MidlandMain Line to carry heritage trains. It’s anincredible start.
A number of major pieces ofinfrastructure remain to be built. Before we can tackle them, we need tocomplete design work and secureplanning permission. But somethingwe can do right now is restore thecanal bridge (immediately north of theengine shed) at Loughborough.
A full survey has taken place on thebridge. It’s a local landmark; an elegantstructure dating from the late 1890s. Itneeds major repairs to the steel deckand the brickwork but does not needto be replaced. Current thinking is, itwon’t even need to be lifted to beoverhauled. Using techniquesdeveloped for the national railnetwork, the work can be done while itremains in situ. This will mean somedisruption to the canal below, so weneed to do the repairs out of peakboating season.
We aim to raise four hundred andseventy five thousand pounds. This willallow us to carry out the work andcontinue the design process for therest of reunification. If the fundraisinggoes well, we will commence the workin Autumn 2018.
By working together we’ve alreadyachieved a great deal. Now its time forthe next part of the reunification plan. We’ve reached the canal bridge.Together we can cross it.
