One of the main reasons why I fell in love with golf was the fact that I got to be outdoors. To me there is nothing like breathing in the fresh air. With a professional career spanning over eighteen seasons and covering all playable continents, I have to say that there is no place that is tougher to dress for, and has more unpredictable weather, than our oldest Championship – The British Open. It was on a Saturday in the middle of July at 11.00 am, as I was walking over to tee it up in the third round at Royal Saint George's Golf links, that I witnessed the most challenging conditions I have ever played in. I started off in thermals, trousers and waterproof trousers and on top a turtleneck polo, sweater, rain jacket, gloves and a woollen hat. I could hardly believe how freezing it was, and on top of that we had a 35 mile-an-hour wind bringing in pouring rain from the side. On days like these an umbrella is as good as useless, but what does come in handy is top quality clothing that won’t restrict your swing too much, while keeping you warm and dry. Over the following four hours it was a tremendous challenge just to get a decent grip on the club, let alone stand firm against the wind and get some sort of a strike on the ball to keep it moving forward.

With four holes remaining the front had passed and the sun came out to warm us up. On that same day I finished the round dressed in just a polo and a pair of trousers – the rest of the day was as good as any out on the links. Dress well and enjoy your golf,Freddie Jacobson

WEATHER PROTECTIONSYSTEM

1 32

The OscarJacobson Golf Weather Protection System is based on “three layers of clothing.” That way you have plenty of options. You can easily adapt your clothing to the weather conditions and you have constant protection from wind, rain and sun. But the best part is that the clothes are also designed to keep you comfortable and relaxed and allow room for movement, which in turn makes you a better player, whateverthe weather.

THE BASE LAYER. These are the clothes that sit closest to your body. They should be light, breathable, wick moisture away from your skin and they should be extremely comfortable.

THE MID LAYER. This is clothing that provides warmth and comfort from head to toe. (When your body feels warm and relaxed, it’s easier to keep a cool head).

THE OUTER LAYER. This layer provides protection from the elements: rain and wind (and sometimes sun). The clothes are windproof, light and watertight.

BASE LAYER

The OscarJacobson Base Layer collection comprises polo shirts, underwear and sweaters. The main function of the materials is to wick moisture away from your body in order to keep you dry, warm and/or cool. Our most advanced shirts are made from eco-friendly dyed fabric that features long-lasting colour fastness and both UVA and UVB protection. Other materials used include long fibre extra fine merino wool that keeps you warm when you are cold and cool when you are warm, in addition to polyester fabrics that stay soft, cool and comfortable even after many hours of use.

MID LAYER

The Mid Layer is often used for insulation and thermal enhancement in cold weather. Use the Mid Layer over the Base Layer and underneath the Outer Layer for maximum insulation and comfort in challenging weather conditions. The Mid Layer seals in your body heat and transports moisture to the surface, where it vaporises or passes on to the Outer Layer. The Mid Layer is perfect to wear on a dry, windy day over a Base Layer garment for optimal comfort and performance. Materials used include merino wool, fleece and soft shell fabrics.

OUTER LAYER

The Outer Layer is mostly about protection from the elements, such as rain and wind, but it should also be quick to dry, which is a major advantage on the golf course. One of our jackets is a waterproof, 3-layer functional jacket, with woven mechanical stretch fabric and soft jersey inside for comfort. It has a slightly dropped tail at the back for added protection of the lower-back when leaning forward. Other jackets include the Soft Shell jacket and the Ultra Light, which is the world’s lightest windproof and water repellent golf jacket. The trousers are made from a waterproof 3-layer functional material, woven fabric with two-way mechanical stretch and soft jersey inside for comfort.

MERINO WOOLWe only use long fibre extra fine merino wool. Merino wool keeps you warm when you are cold and cool when you are hot. Wool is also self-cleaning and eliminates odour. It can also keep you warm even if it gets wet.

SPIN YARN DYEThis is an eco-friendly dyed fabric. Moisture is transported from the body and Base Layer to the surface of the garment, where it vaporises or is conveyed to the next layer. The fabric has long-lasting colour fastness due to the fact that dye is applied directly to the fibre instead of at a later stage. It also has UVA and UVB protection.

COOLMAXThis special four-channel or six-channel fibre forms a transport system that wicks moisture away from the skin to the outer layer of the fabric. It then dries that moisture faster than other fabrics to thermo-regulate the body by evaporative cooling.

QUICK DRYThis is a technical fabric with both chemical wicking and mechanical wicking, which transports moisture from the body and Base Layer to the surface of the garment, where it vaporises or is conveyed to the next layer. The garment is treated with an eco-friendly anti-bacterial finish to prevent odour and bacteria. The garment is also treated with an anti-stain agent that prevents soil from staining the garment.

PRIMALOFT®

This thermal insulation material outperforms all other competitive synthetic insulation materials because it is better at sealing in your body heat in both wet and dry conditions. PrimaLoft® fibres are specially treated with a proprietary finish that prevents them from absorbing moisture and keeps the fibres very dry in wet conditions, which is essential for staying warm when wet. The material also mimics the softness and compressibility of down compared to competitive and at times “scratchy,” synthetic insulation materials – our fibres are physically smaller and therefore trap more of your body’s heat in small airspaces. BODY DRYThis material is composed of multiple cross-section yarns and treated using high-tech finishing processes. Body Dry fabrics wick sweat away from the body and dry quickly, leaving a pleasant feeling after a warm day on the golf course. AIRTECHThis fabric is water repellent, windproof and features moisture vapour permeability to keep you feeling dry and comfortable during outdoor activities, whatever the weather.

X-SKINX-skin is an innovative, technical and multi-functional fabric. The outer layer is water repellent and the inner layer dries quickly by wicking moisture away from the body.
