Introduction

The Installation Handbook, Code: OIW-HBO-0001, covers the basic wiring for networking an

OIW Analyzer to a PC.

This handbook will cover connecting several OIW Analyzers to a PC, Remote Desktop

Connection, the software to control and monitor an OIW Analyzer and how to access OIW

Analyzer files remotely.

CAUTION: This manual describes the remote access features of the unit NOT the

installation. Ensure that the unit has been correctly installed in line with the

Installation Handbook prior to use.

CAUTION: No options should be altered without a full understanding of the change

being made.

Health & Safety

WARNING: This document relates to electrical equipment of substantial weight.

Health and Safety section of the Installation Handbook must be read carefully and

understood before using this equipment.

NOTE: although Warning hazards are related to potential personal injury, and

Caution hazards are associated with material damage, it must be understood that

connect an OIW Analyzer to the ADSL unit.

To connect several OIW Analyzers upon request Advanced Sensors can supply a multiport

Switch or a Router. Figure 1 shows how to connect several OIW Analyzers to a single

monitoring PC via a switch or router.

Switch and Router Connections

A typical 5 port switch provide by Advanced Sensors is shown in Figure 2 and a typical 8 port

switch shown in Figure 3.

Although the Ethernet connections may be connected to the Switch or Router in any order it is

suggested that you use port 1 for the monitoring PC and highest port numbers for each OIW

Analyzer in turn. This will allow for easier problem solving if issues should arise. Figure 2

and Figure 3 show the grouping of Ethernet cables from the ADSL units connected to the OIW

Analyzers at one set of the Switch’s connections and the Monitoring PC at the other end of the

Switch’s connections.




3 Controlling an OIW Monitor Remotely The personal computer that ships with the OIW Monitor has been pre-configured to

communicate with the OIW Analyzer.

Launching Remote Desktop Connection

Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection is a desktop sharing system that remotely controls

another computer.

The user may launching Remote Desktop Connection from the desktop,

see Figure 4, or from the “Start” menu, see Figure 5.

Locating the Unique Identifier

Once the Remote Desktop Connection has been launched you will need to identify the OIW

Monitor you wish to control either by a unique identifier supplied by Advanced Sensors or by

the OIW Monitor’s IP address1.

The OIW Monitor’s unique identifier is displayed on the front of an OIW Monitor, see Figure

6, the OIW Software, see Figure 7, and the OIW System Software, see Figure 8.

Configuring the IP Address

If you have a laptop supplied by ASL please proceed to section 0 Connecting to the Analyzer.

If a laptop is not supplied by ASL. You may elect to configure your own laptop or PC by doing

the following:

Right click the network symbol in the taskbar and click “Open Network and Sharing Center”.

See Figure 9.

In the “Network and Sharing Center” click “Change adapter settings on the left. See Figure 10.

Right click the port connected to the analyzer and select properties. See Figure 11.

Select IPv4 and go to properties, see Figure 12.

Click “Use the following IP address and set the IP address of the laptop to match the IP address

of the analyzer. The last three digits must be different from the analyzer. See Figure 13

To test the connection, run Command Prompt and ping the analyzer’s IP address from the

laptop or PC. See Figure 14Error! Reference source not found.

Ensure that all packets are sent and received. See Figure 15.

Connecting to the Analyzer

Remote Desktop Connection will present the user with a dialog box which allows you to enter

the serial number or IP address of the OIW Monitor that you wish to use. Clicking “Show

Options” will allow a User name to be entered, the user name “OIW” should be used, see

Figure 16.

After clicking “Connect” Remote Desktop Connection will prompt for a password; this should

be left blank, see Figure 17

Remote Desktop Connection will display the OIW Monitor on the screen of your PC, see

Figure 18.

After a connection is established the log in screen will be shown on the analyzer.

To close the connection click ONLY the “Remote Desktop DISCONNECT” button on the

taskbar. Do not close the connection by closing the “Remote Desktop Connection” window.

After disconnecting using the “Remote Desktop DISCONNECT” button the analyzer should be

logged back in.




4 Accessing OIW Files Remotely The log files can be found in a directory called OIWlogs, located in the shared documents area

on the systems hard drive. The shared documents folder can be found via “My Network

Places”, see Figure 20.
