United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA January 2016 Oil Value of U.S. Soybeans Trending Higher Since reaching a low in September, the share of oil’s value in soybeans has climbed to near 33 percent in December. While this is still below the 20-year average of 35 percent, it marks the highest value-share for soybean oil since May 2013. The increase in the value-share of oil is in response to the steady decline in the value of soybean meal and the rising price of oil. Soybean meal prices have fallen over the past 6 months. With large stocks of soybeans available to crush, soybean meal is readily available which has pressured prices lower. Large forecasts for South American soybean production also contribute to price declines for soybeans and meal. Prices for soybean oil, which reached a 10-year low in late 2015, have begun to rise in conjunction with other vegetable oils. Reduced global supplies of rape and sun oil, along with slower growth year-to-year in palm oil production, hold the potential for a tighter market and continued price strengthening for all oils. Demand for soybean oil is particularly keen, in part due to its relative abundance as well as the narrowing of its price premium to palm oil. Oil Value of U.S. Soybeans Trending Higher

Since reaching a low in September, the share of oil’s value in soybeans has climbed to near 33 percent in December. OVERVIEW Global soybean production is reduced this month as lower estimates for the United States and South Africa more than offset larger production in China. Exports are raised on higher shipments from Argentina and Canada more than offsetting reduction for the United States. Global stocks are lowered this month, reflecting higher crush. The U.S. season-average farm price is reduced. SOYBEAN PRICES U.S. export bids in December, FOB Gulf, averaged $351/ton, up $2 from last month. As of the week ending December 31, U.S. 2015/16 soybean export commitments (outstanding sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 23.4 million tons compared with 27.0 million a year ago. Total commitments to the world are 38.2 million tons, compared with 43.1 million for the same period last year. 2015/16 TRADE CHANGES • United States

o Soybean exports are reduced 681,000 tons to 46.0 million. o Soybean meal exports are lowered 136,000 tons to 10.6 million. o Rapeseed imports are cut 180,000 tons to 501,000. o Rapeseed meal imports are raised 250,000 tons to 3.6 million.

• Argentina o Soybean exports are raised 550,000 tons to 11.8 million as the recent peso devaluation

supports additional sales. o Soybean meal exports are boosted 450,000 tons to 31.3 million on growing exportable

supplies due to larger domestic crush. o Soybean oil exports are up 180,000 tons to 5.7 million reflecting larger supplies and

strong demand in global markets. • Bangladesh soybean imports are raised 100,000 tons to 950,000 reflecting growing demand for

protein feeds. • Canada

o Soybean exports are up 300,000 tons to 4.2 million the strong pace of early-season sales, particularly to China.

o Rapeseed exports are raised 200,000 tons to 8.7 million reflecting increased supplies and growing demand in China.

o Soybean meal imports are lowered 100,000 tons to 950,000 in response to adequate domestic supplies and the impact of a weaker Canadian dollar.

o Rapeseed meal exports are boosted 350,000 tons to 4.1 million on strong demand from the United States.

• China rapeseed imports are raised 150,000 tons to 4.3 million reflecting the strong pace of trade at the beginning of the marketing year as well as offsetting a lower cottonseed production forecast.

• India o Rapeseed meal exports are lowered 100,000 tons to 300,000 on the slow pace of trade in

the first quarter of the marketing year. o Soybean oil imports are raised 200,000 tons to 3.6 million to offset reduced cottonseed oil

production. o Palm oil imports are reduced 200,000 tons to 9.5 million reflecting higher soybean and

rapeseed oil imports. • Turkey soybean imports are raised 100,000 tons to 2.4 million reflecting growing demand for

protein feeds. • Vietnam soybean imports are raised 200,000 tons to 1.8 million on strong demand for protein

meal.
