BRUSHES

PAINTSBegin building your paint collection with smaller tubes to see which colors you like painting most. If you need some help, just start with a few shades of basic colors: white, black, red, blue and yellow. Until you are comfortable mixing colors, pick up green and brown as well.

TYPE :

SHAPE:

Synthetic brushes make soft strokes, which is great for fine detail, blending and glazing.

Bristle brushes create strong marks and are best used for larger-scale painting.

Bright allows you to have more control of your brushstroke.

Filbert is perfect for creating smaller blends than you’d get with a flat.

Fan is commonly used for blending and adding texture or highlights.

Flat applies color evenly and is often used for covering larger areas.

Round is great for smaller detail and line work.

TIP:You can use a dropper to easily transfer thinner to your palette for mixing.

Liquin™ family of products offers mediums in several different forms:

LIQUIN™:

Liquin™ Original is a tried-and-true favorite among oil paint artists. It’s a semi-gloss medium whose main purpose is to speed up drying time. But it also helps reduce brush stroke retention and resist yellowing.

Liquin™ Light Gel’s consistency breaks down on brushing and flows out smoothly, making it ideal for artists who are looking for a non-drip effect. It’s also a quick-drying medium that helps resist yellowing.

Liquin™ Fine Detail is the most fluid of the Liquin™ line of products. As the name suggests, this quick-drying gloss medium is great for fine details as well as producing a smooth surface picture that’s free of brush marks.

One of the most important things to note is that straight-from-the-tube oils are thick and slow to dry. So you may want to use a medium that will thin the paints and produce the effects you’re looking for. Here are some of the basics:

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:Artist Palette: board to hold and mix paint

Palette Cups: to keep thinner and cleaner handy while working

Palette Knives: to mix, apply and smooth paint working

Colorless Thinner: solution to mix with paint for proper consistency

Brush Cleaner: for washing paintbrushes to preserve quality

The blending and glazing medium is a fairly new medium that’s actually a mixture of varnish, linseed oil and mineral spirits. This combination slows drying time, allowing the paints to be workable for longer periods of time. In addition to blending and glazing, it also works well for antiquing, staining and detailed stroke work and helps improve transparency and depth.

Refined linseed oil is one of the most popular oils. Pale in color, this low-viscosity oil is often added to other oils to slow the drying time.

Linseed oil is another medium that comes in a variety of forms:

Drying linseed oil has the fastest drying rate of all and is darker than refined linseed oil. It improves flow while also increasing gloss and transparency.

Cold-pressed linseed oil is slightly yellow in color and dries a bit faster than refined linseed oil. Among its many benefits are improved flow, increased gloss and transparency and reduced brushstrokes.
