Providing effective sealing solutions for the oil and gas industry is extremely challenging. Whether for use during exploration,offshore or onshore production, upstream, midstream ordownstream, seals must withstand highly destructive andaggressive chemicals and gases, abrasive media, intensedownhole temperatures and severe pressures. Further difficultiesarise from supplying sealing systems to oilfields located in remoteareas of operation, especially as most production now takes placein the harsh Subsea environments in which, to fully exploitdiminishing reserves, wells are excavated to previouslyunbelievable depths.

High perfomance elastomer sealing technology

Advanced elastomersIdeal for applications where temperaturesdo not exceed +180°C (+356°F), the TSSrange of elastomers are engineered formaximum temperature performance andchemical resistance.

FEP encapsulated O-RingsFEP encapsulated O-Rings consist of aFluoroelastomer or Silicone elastomerO-Ring housed within a seamless FEPjacket, providing improved chemicalcompatibility with equivalent elasticityand low friction.

Breadth of rangeDue to the breadth of range offered by Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, designers can specify seals that meet thechallenge of balancing cost effectiveness with performance. Forstatic applications, any size of O-Ring (standard or custom) isavailable alongside custom moulded designs and bondedproducts; in materials ranging from basic elastomer grades toleading edge, high specification compounds, particularlydeveloped for the oil and gas industry. These innovativecompounds help meet our aims of minimising maintenance timeand improving production efficiency by extending seal life.

Advanced elastomer sealsAs one of the leading developers of elastomer compounds forsealing applications, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions offers a range ofHNBR and FKM materials engineered to maximise theireffectiveness at high temperatures and when in contact withaggressive chemicals. Specification of these is supported by localexperts who can recommend the optimum grade for everyapplication.

Inventive designsA development of the standard O-Ring, FEP encapsulatedO-Rings, consist of a Fluoroelastomer or Silicone elastomer O-Ringhoused within a seamless FEP jacket and are ideal when a costeffective solution is required that offers improved chemicalcompatibility, equivalent elasticity and low friction. Quad rings,manufactured from the same materials and to the same groovedimensions as standard O-Rings, can directly replace these whenmovements are found to cause twisting, reducing sealingintegrity.

Isolast® PerfluoroelastomerTrelleborg Sealing Solutions Isolast® presents the ultimate inelastomer sealing. These high performance Perfluoroelastomers(FFKM) are virtually inert and demonstrate almost universalchemical compatibility, making them ideal for hydrocarbonprocessing applications. Specialist grades can operate atcontinuous temperatures up to +325°C (+617°F) and speciallyformulated explosive decompression and steam resistantcompounds are available. In addition, the resistance of Isolast® toamines extends the life of seals in contact with corrosioninhibitors, a known problem in environmentally friendly waterbased drilling equipment.

Variseal®

An extremely important product to the oil and gas industry,Variseal® spring energised Turcon® PTFE seals are field-proven inextreme gas and liquid handling situations, having been used inthe most demanding of production and refining applications.Designed to fit in existing O-Ring grooves, with the correctselection of PTFE, filled PTFE compounds and appropriate springmaterial and profile, Variseal® can provide the highest level ofsystem integrity, even in the most aggressive and corrosive ofchemical media; providing the ultimate explosive decompressionresistance.

Wills Rings®

Wills Rings® are the original metal seals, providing the optimumsolution in static sealing on connectors, flanges and plates forgases and liquids. They operate effectively under extremes oftemperature, ranging from cryogenic to 850°C (1560°F) andsevere pressures, often being utilised when fire safe sealing isrequired. Wills Rings® are available in a variety of metals, O or Ccross section with either pressure filled or system pressureactivation.

Turcon® PTFE A range of Turcon® PTFE solutions offers advanced sealing forrotary applications. In Turcon® Glyd Ring, Turcon® Roto Glyd Ringand Turcon® AQ Seal an elastomer O-Ring or Quad Ring energisesa PTFE sealing ring. Engineered to reduce friction with high wearand abrasion resistance, they are ideal for high-pressuresituations. The Double Delta fits in an existing O-Ring groove andexpands the parameters of the O-Ring used with it, improvingwear and friction characteristics.

Bearing solutionsBearings manufactured from Turcite®, an engineered PTFE basedthermoplastic, prevent metal to metal contact between pistonand rods, bores and glands, absorbing transverse load and withlow friction, minimise stick-slip. Bearings from Orkot®, anon-asbestos synthetic, composite material incorporating solidlubricants, provide exceptional wear resistance and virtually noswell in water. Ideal for Subsea environments they offer effectiveand maintenance free solutions in seawater.

High performance Turcon®

Turcon® PTFE solutions offer advancedsealing for rotary applications, providingreduced friction, high wear and abrasionresistance in high pressure situations.

Exceptional offshore performanceOn FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) unitturrets a combination of Turcon® Roto Glyd Ring®, NBR O-Ring,Turcon® Variseal® and V-Seals, give exceptional sealingperformance. They withstand rigorous ocean movements,allowing low friction turning when connected to subsea buoys.The fairleads to these resist extreme chain breaking forces withthe help of high load bearings from Orkot® that exhibit excellentcorrosion and wear properties.

Resisting harsh conditionsValves and pumps within processing systems must operate inharsh environments, facing extreme temperatures ranging from-60°C to +300°C (-75°F to +575°F) in conjunction with high andlow pressures. Seals within them may also have to withstandcontact with aggressive chemical media and counter thepossibility of explosive decompression. Helping to extend servicelife, Turcon® Variseal® and Isolast® O-Rings are performingexcellently in such applications.

Safety critical sealingThe nozzle on gas flare lines, recovering hydrocarbon gas androuting this back to the main process, require a sealing systemcapable of withstanding intense temperatures reaching +400°C(+750°F) and severe pressures up to 200MPa (30,000psi). The bestoption for this application is Wills Rings® and these metal O-Ringshave proved more than capable of withstanding these extremeswhilst providing effective fire-safe sealing.

Ensuring downhole integrityWith the increasing depth of wells, the challenge of ensuringlogging equipment retains sealing integrity during exploration isparamount. Sealing systems must withstand temperatures inexcess of +180°C (+360°F) and pressures over 155MPa (22,500psi).In constant contact with destructive well fluids, innovativedesigns utilising Turcon® Variseal®, Isolast® O-Rings and AQ seals,must fit into compact housings, significantly restricted by tooldiameter.

Extremes withstood in flaresThe best option for withstandingintense temperatures and severepressures is Wills Rings® which haveproved themselves in extremes whilstproviding effective fire-safe sealing.
