THE OIL & GAS DIVISION

The Oil & Gas Division is one of twenty two Divisions, Societies and Groups within the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) that represent the technical interests of the Institute.

The core role of the Division is to encourage and support the maximum economic recovery of oil and gas without injury or damage to persons and the environment, and thereby the Division directly contributes to sustainable development.

Its interests cover all technical, educational, research and professional considerations relating to upstream oil and gas activities. These interests include associated equipment design and manufacture and cover the complete life cycle from exploration through to reservoir engineering, drilling/well completion, production and abandonment.

The specific role of the Division is to further the following three key objectives for the benefit of its members and the public:

• The representation of upstream oil and gas activities;

• Professional development; and

• Membership growth.

Externally the Division promotes and represents the sciences, technologies and practices involved in upstream oil and gas on behalf of the Institute. The Division encourages individuals with an interest in upstream oil and gas to join the Institute. The Division establishes links with relevant national and international bodies in Industry, government and academia to promote professional activities for public benefit.

THE OIL & GAS DIVISION IS A SPECIALIST COMMUNITY WITHIN THE INSTITUTE OF MATERIALS, MINERALS AND MINING (IOM3), A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTION THAT ENCOMPASSES THE COMPLETE MATERIALS LIFECYCLE, INCLUDING EXPLORATION, MINING AND EXTRACTION, MATERIALS CHARACTERISATION, PROCESSING, FORMING, FINISHING THROUGH TO PRODUCT APPLICATIONS, RECYCLING, REMANUFACTURE AND RE-USE.

MEMBER BENEFITS

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITIONThe Oil & Gas Division is one of the largest special interest groups within IOM3. Membership growth is driven by the world’s ever-increasing need for energy as well as regulatory requirements governing the energy industries, dictating that those responsible have a sufficient level of professional experience and competence. This is recognised by the FIMMM (Fellow), MIMMM (Professional Member) and associated Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Scientist (CSci), and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualifications awarded by the Institute. CEnv recognises and supports the drive towards full life cycle planning to be incorporated into natural resource extractive industry planning and execution.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTMembers of the Oil & Gas Division are encouraged to keep up to date through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) including accessing learned articles in the IOM3 journals and publications relevant to oil and gas activities, attending short courses, conferences, regional meetings and engaging in work-based developments which explore new products and processes. The Division runs CPD courses specifically aimed at the industry. Up to date information is available on the Division website (www.iom3.org/oilandgas) including resources of direct use to both students and practising engineers such as Engineering Guidelines and complementary websites. Division members can participate in working groups to address issues of relevance.

EDUCATION AND TRAININGThe Institute seeks to meet the oil and gas industry’s education and training needs through a range of activities promoting understanding and awareness. These include the transfer of information at international, national and local conferences and seminars, the IOM3 members’ magazine Materials World, the IOM3 website, the Minerals and Metallurgy library and through close working relationships with IMMa. The Oil & Gas Division co-operates closely with the Mining Institute of Scotland regarding technical meetings and events, recognising that Aberdeen is the main oil and gas centre in Western Europe. We aim to develop equally effective working relations with other IOM3 divisions and technical societies with common interests. The Oil & Gas Division also builds and maintains relationships with kindred external learned societies through joint activities facilitated by members who actively participate in both. Key external bodies are the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Energy Institute, the Institute of Corrosion and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

The Oil & Gas Division provides educational material for members on the division website in the form of presentation packs covering topics such as oil and gas well servicing.
