UltraOil® 16-600kW
Hoval reserve the right to make changes without prior notice2 August 2017 - Rev 00
The Hoval UltraOil®, with output rates of 16 to 600 kW, has been specially developed for operation with the latest generation of low-sulphur heating oil. The latest condensing technology and the patented aluFer® heat exchanger together allow the Hoval UltraOil® to extract every last bit of heat from each drop of oil.
Hoval aluFer® technology
The internationally patented aluFer® tube is a Hoval innovation in advanced heat transfer technology. It is constructed from an inner aluminium finned surface, heat shrunk within an outer stainless steel tube. The exceptional efficiency of the heat transfer is attributed to the following factors:
• High heat conductivity of aluminium being ten times greater than that of steel
• A ten times larger heat exchange surface due to the internal finned surface of the aluminium tube
• Optimised turbulence and heat exchange efficiency created by the multiple flow channels on the inner surface of the tube
Ultra environmentally friendly:The advanced Hoval UltraOil® should only be used with Ultra Low Sulphur oil (<0.005% by weight or <50ppm sulphur content) complying to BS2869 Class A2. The sulphur content of this heating oil is equivalent to that of natural gas. Thus, the sulphur emissions drop to almost zero, meaning there are fewer deposits in the combustion chamber and a lower environmental impact. Your heating system can therefore offer a consistently high efficiency rate and less maintenance is required.Standard kerosine gas oil to BS2869 Class C2 is not suitable.
Ultra economical and compact:Due to the latest condensing technology, the Hoval UltraOil®
produces a significantly higher energy yield. With the patented aluFer® heat exchanger, maximum heat is extracted from the combustion flue gases and transmitted to the heating water, resulting in a standard efficiency in excess of 104% net. The Hoval UltraOil® combines a very high output and ingenious technology with a compact design.
Ultra flexible:The Hoval UltraOil® does not require a minimum water flow rate1, a minimum water return temperature or a minimum boiler temperature. It can therefore be integrated simply and cost-effectively into your heating system. As the flue gases are cool, an inexpensive plastic flue pipe is suitable.
1 See note 2 in Technical Data section
Sophisticated management for your heating system, the TopTronic® E control is the brain of every Hoval system. Innovative touchscreen technology ensures smooth and continuously monitored operation.
Easy maintenance guaranteed:Numerous, well thought out details ensure low operating costs and high convenience of maintenance in the UltraOil®. All the components are easily accessible, simple to clean and can be rapidly replaced in the event of a fault.
Assembly and delivery:The UltraOil® (16 - 50) boilers are supplied fully assembled, cased and shrink wrapped on a pallet for ease of handling on site. The burner is however supplied seperately for fitting by the installer. The UltraOil® 80-600D are delivered with the casings, burner and control panel packed seperately for fitting by the installer.
Twin return connections:The Hoval UltraOil® is supplied with two separate return connections and active water temperature stratification within the boiler shell is encouraged. The Hoval UltraOil® can be used with an intelligent heating system, where lower temperature circuits with cooler system returns can be connected directly to the boiler to promote condensation and therefore improve operating efficiency. Higher temperature or warmer circuits associated with more conventional system returns are directed to a separate boiler connection. By ensuring that the coldest return circuits are introduced into the boiler without mixing with hotter water – even if in relatively small quantities – the flue gases within the boiler can be brought below their dew point to release as much condensation as possible.
ErP labelling classification for boilers to 70kW.

– The burner electrical supply must be connected to the boiler’s standard plug-type connection.
– The burner electrical supply cable must be shortened to ensure that the plug has to be disconnected in order to swing out the burner.
Noise AttenuationThe following steps can be taken to reduce noise:
– Make the walls, ceiling and floor of the boiler plant room as solid as possible, fit sound absorbers in the air supply ducting, provide conduit supports and brackets with sound dampening fittings.
– If there are living quarters either above or below the boiler plant room, fit rubber vibration dampers underneath the base channels of the boiler and connect conduits flexibly with flexible connections.
– Connect circulating pumps to the network with flexible connections.
– In order to dampen flame noise in the flue, sound absorbers can be fitted in the flue system (consider leaving space for subsequent installation).
Flue system – Flue systems must comply with current
British Standard & Legislation.– The flue must be gastight, impervious to
moisture, non-corrosive, acid-proof and must be suitable for flue gas temperatures up to 120°C.
– The flue system must be suitable for operation with excess pressure.
– The flue must have an ascending fall in order to ensure that the condensate which forms in the flue system flows back into the boiler where it can be neutralised before being discharged into the drainage system.
– When using plastic flue pipes, a flue gas safety temperature limiter should be provided. With the UltraOil® (50), this is already fitted.
– A flue gas sampling point with a circular internal diameter of 10-21mm must be fitted in the flue pipe.
This sh ould extend through the thermal insulation if fitted. (required for the UltraOil® 16-35, 80-600D.
For the UltraOil® 50 the concentric vertical adaptor with sample points should be fitted close to the boiler).
Flue dimensionsSee Flue system section
Use– Optimum flue gas condensation and energy
saving can be achieved with the lowest possible heating operating temperatures.
– With the lowest outside air temperature, the heating return temperature should be 45°C or less to guarantee best efficiency gain.
Regulations and guidelinesThe following regulations and guidelines must be observed:
– Hoval technical information and installation instructions.
– Relevant British Standards and Guidelines.– Hydraulic and technical control regulations.
Water qualityHeating water:– European standard BSEN 14868: 2005
and VDI guideline 2035 must be observed. Particular note must be taken of the following regulations:
– Hoval boilers and water heaters are suitable for heating systems without significant oxygenation (system type 1 in accordance below with BSEN 14868: 2005).
– Systems with – Continuous oxygenation (e.g. floor
heating without diffusion-proof plastic pipes) or
– Intermittent oxygenation (e.g. frequent topping up required) must be fitted with a system separator
– Treated heating water must be checked at least once per year or more frequently as specified by the inhibitor manufacturer.
– If, in the case of existing systems (e.g. boiler replacement), the water quality of the existing heating water complies with VDI 2035, it is not recommended that the system be refilled. VDI 2035 also applies to top-up water.
– Before filling new systems, or, if applicable, existing systems, the heating system must be professionally cleaned and flushed. The heating system must be flushed before the boiler is filled.
– Components of the boiler / heat exchanger that come into contact with water are made of ferrous materials and stainless steel.
– Due to the risk of stress corrosion cracking in the stainless steel component of the boiler, the combined chloride, nitrate and sulphate content of the heating water must not exceed a total of 50mg/l.
– Once the heating has been in operation for 6 – 12 weeks, the pH value of the heating water should be between 8.3 and 9.5.
Water for filling and topping up the system:– Untreated drinking water is generally most
suitable for filling and topping up a system with a Hoval boiler. However, the water quality of the untreated drinking water must always comply with VDI 2035 or must be demineralised and/or treated with inhibitors. The specifications of BSEN 14868: 2005 must be observed.
– In order to maintain the boiler’s high efficiency level and to avoid overheating of the heating surfaces, the values in the table below must not be exceeded. These values are calculated in relation to the boiler output (the smallest individual boiler in the case of multiple boiler systems) and the water content of the system.
– The total quantity of water used to fill and top up the system during the boiler’s life must not exceed a value equivalent to three times the water content of the system.
Combustion air– A suitable supply of combustion air must be
guaranteed. It must not be possible to close the air supply aperture.
– Minimum free area for the air supply aperture at low level is 6 cm2 per 1kW boiler input.
– Minimum free area for the air supply aperture at high level is 3cm2 per 1kW boiler input.
Oil burner installation– The burner is supplied seperate for
mounting by the installer.– The gap between the burner draught tube
and the boiler refractory must be filled with the insulation material supplied.
Boiler electrical connection– Mains supply 1 x 230V, 50Hz, 10A.– Note twin (UltraOil® D) boilers require two
supplies.

– In order to ensure reliable burner operation, a GOK combined oil de-aerator, 70 micron oil filter & shut-off valve unit must be fitted between the burner and the oil supply pipe serving each burner. The GOK unit must be mounted at burner height. It is supplied as standard with all UltraOil boilers (two supplied with each UltraOil 'D' boiler). For more information please see the Accessories section - part number 6049368 refers.
– The size and design of the oil distribution pipework should comply with current regulations.
– For UltraOil (16-80) boilers the recommended oil pipework size is 4mm inside diameter and the maximum pipework length in metres is as follows:
Suct ion height H in m
UltraOil®
(16) (20) (25) (35) (50) (65) (80)
0 30 30 30 30 20 14 12
1 30 30 30 23 15 11 9
2 30 29 23 16 10 8 6
3 20 16 13 9 6 - -
– For UltraOil (110-300) boilers the recommended oil pipework size is 6mm inside diameter and the maximum pipework length in metres is as follows:
– The above table is also applicable for UltraOil twin (320-600D) boilers. Both boilers will each require their own oil supply.
– All figures are indicative only and are based on a total resistance (including components, elbows etc) of 40 mbar. If pipework is oversized this can lead to operational issues with the burner.
Expansion vessel / expansion– It is recommended that the system
expansion vessel is connected to the heating system with a suitable connection consisting of a lock shield valve and drain cock as per BS 7074. This means that the entire system will not need to be emptied in order to carry out work on the vessel.
– In the case of open vented, the system height must be such that the required minimum operating pressure is maintained.
Safety valve & automatic air vent– A safety valve and automatic air vent must
be fitted to all boilers.– On the UltraOil® 16-50 and the UltraOil®
(110-600D) these should be fitted on the flow pipework from the boiler, but before any isolation valve.
– On the UltraOil® 80 the seperate safety valve connection can be utilised for both items (utilising a tee piece).
Condensate drain - off- Permission to run the flue gas condensate
into the drainage system must be obtained from the relevant authority.
- The condensate from the flue system can be run off via the boiler. A condensate trap in the flue pipe system is then no longer required.
- A siphon must be fitted at the condensate outlet of the oil-fired condensing boiler (supplied with the boiler). No isolating valve should be fitted in this drainage pipework.
Information concerning heating system replacementIf an existing oil-fired heating system is being replaced by a Hoval UltraOil®, the following points relating to the oil tank and its refilling should be observed:- The Hoval UltraOil® must only be operated
with ultra low sulphur heating oil with a sulphur content < 50ppm (< 0.005%). Complying to BS2869 Class A2
- It is beneficial if the oil tank is cleaned first.- An existing residual quantity of heating oil
in the oil tank may be mixed with ultra low sulphur heating oil provided that the residual oil does not exceed the following proportions of the total content. Residual quantity heating oil
(sulphur content 2000ppm or 0.2%) max 3% of the tank volume. Residual quantity heating oil (sulphur content 1000ppm or 0.1%) max 5% of the tank volume. Residual quantity heating oil
(sulphur content 500ppm or 0.05%) max 10% of the tank volume.
- The tank must be filled completely (100%) in order to achieve the permitted mixing ratio with ultra low-sulphur heating oil, taking into account the remaining residual quantity of heating oil in the tank.
Oil distribution pipework installation
– The UltraOil® (16-80) boilers can only be used with a single pipe system. Max. suction height without intermediate pump 3.5m, Maximum length of pipework is 30m. Please confirm any oil feed designs with Hoval Technical before installation.
– The UltraOil® (110-600D) boilers can only be used with a single pipe system. Max. suction height without intermediate pump 3.5m, Maximum length of pipework is 30m. Please confirm any oil feed designs with Hoval Technical before installation.
– The pipework / flexible connections must be positioned in such a way that the burner lid / burner can be swung out by 90°.
– A shut-off device must be installed at the end of the rigid oil pipe ie: before the flexible connections.
– The highest point of the oil distribution pipework should be 3.5m above the lowest point of the oil tank suction pipe.
– Pipework must be installed to avoid self priming.
– If the highest point of the oil level in the oil tank is higher than the lowest point of the distribution pipework, a solenoid valve must be fitted at the highest point of the oil pipework, as close as possible to the oil tank.
Concentric Flue design UltraOil® 50• An adapter with sample points must
be used (fitted to the boiler flue outlet connection).
• The flue gas is very cool and saturated with moisture so there will be very little or no buoyancy to pull the gases up the chimney.
• The burner fan assists with the evacuation of the flue gases so there may be slight pressurisation of the flue.
• It is permissible for the condensate from the flue system to drain back through the boiler.
• Horizontal flue sections must be inclined back to the boiler (3° minimum) to prevent condensate remaining in the flue.
• Flues must be designed to meet all current regulations / standards.
• See Technical data section for flue gas mass flow rates, temperatures and usable fan overpressure.
• Please refer to the ventilation requirements below.
Flue design UltraOil® 80-600D• A minimum temperature class T120
flue can be used if fitted with an over temperature device.
• The first two metres of flue must be the same diameter as the boiler flue gas connection.
• Single wall flues may be used as it is not necessary to keep the flue gas temperature high.
• The flue gas is very cool and saturated with moisture so there will be very little or no buoyancy to pull the gases up the chimney.
• The burner fan assists with the evacuation of the flue gases so there may be slight pressurisation of the flue.
• Flues must be leak proof against condensate and suitable for pressurised flue gases.
• It is permissible for the condensate from the flue system to drain back through the boiler.
• Horizontal flue sections must be inclined back to the boiler (3° minimum) to prevent condensate remaining in the flue.
• If combustion air ducting is used this should be the same size as the flue.
• Flues must be designed to meet all current regulations / standards.
• On installations with multiple boilers into a single flue the flue system must be designed to prevent any back circulation of flue gases into the plant room.
• See Technical data section for flue gas mass flow rates, temperatures and usable fan overpressure.
• Please refer to ventilation requirements below.
VentilationVentilation air requirements should comply to BS5410-2: current edition.
