SUPPORTING EQUIPMENT AND ENSURING RELIABILITY

Improper installation, poor maintenance or flawedstart-up and shutdown procedures are responsible forsome 70% of plant equipment failures – resulting inincreased and unplanned production and repair costs.

When equipment problems struck a drilling platformin the North Sea, John Crane reacted rapidly to getthe rig back up and running as quickly as possible.

Machinery misalignment had caused cracks to appearon the membranes of a high performance coupling.Scheduled drilling operations meant that maximumturbine power would be needed and this couplingdrove one of the rigs' electricity generating turbines.

The standard repair time for this type of couplingwas not an option as the losses involved incancelling the drilling operation were great.

John Crane mobilized a repair response with thecoupling being taken to an accessible repair centerby ferry and road where the team were alreadyarmed with the knowledge of the emergencysituation and background to the problem.

The team was able to complete the repair in one working day meaning the delay to the drillingoperation and the associated costs were kept to an absolute minimum.

John Crane has supplied products from across our wide portfolio into a project which is developingone of the largest oil fields in Iraq, Zubair. Mechanical seals and seal support systems, high-performance couplings and hydrodynamicbearings are used in multiple centrifugal pumps which are deployed throughout the oil field. The Zubair Project has a development target of850,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) through 2035.

Our products have an established track record forreliability which was a key factor in their selectiongiven the long duration of the project.

When legislation in the United Arab Emiratesrequired hydrocarbon emissions to be reduced,studies identified compressors fitted with traditional wet seals as a chief source of emissions.

This prompted a major energy operator toinvestigate replacing many of its compressor wetseals with gas sealing technology from John Crane.

In addition to the well documented reliability andeconomic advantages of our gas sealing solutions,our extensive knowledge of turbomachineryequipment led to John Crane being selected toreplace the control panels and bearings. As specialists in this field, John Crane were alsocalled on to provide advice on compressormodifications, pipework, electrical work, PLC/DCSintegration, civil works and in some cases,decommissioning.
