University of Westminster

The University of Westminster is a public university in London, United Kingdom. Its antecedent institution, the Royal Polytechnic Institution, was founded in 1838 and was the first polytechnic institution in the UK. Westminster was awarded university status in 1992 meaning it could award its own degrees.

Since then, our education institution has secured a reputation as a place for firsts. These include:

the first polytechnic in the UK (1838) the opening of the first public photographic portrait studio in Europe

the venue for the first public moving picture show in the UK, organised by the Lumiere brothers (1896)

organising the first marathon race (at the London Olympics) over the now traditional distance of 26 miles, 385 yards (1908)

offering the first degree courses in Photographic Science, Photography, and Media Studies (1960s and 1970s)

the first modern university to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – International Trade

the UK’s first Partner University for UN Habitat, the agency which deals with human settlement and development.

Its headquarters and original campus are in Regent Street in the City of Westminster area of central London, with additional campuses in Fitzrovia, Marylebone and Harrow. It operates the Westminster International University in Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

Westminster's academic activities are organised into seven faculties and schools, within which there are around 45 departments. The University has numerous centres of research excellence across all the faculties, including the Communication and Media Research Institute, whose research is ranked in the Global Top 40 by the QS World University Rankings. Westminster had an income of £170.4 million in 2012/13, of which £4.5 million was from research grants and contracts.

Westminster is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of MBAs, EFMD, the European University Association and Universities UK.

China Media Centre

The China Media Centre was launched in 2005 by Sun Yusheng, Vice-President of China Central Television (CCTV) and Jeremy Paxman, Presenter of BBC’s Newsnight. It was the first international unit under the wider umbrella of the UK’s leading media research institute, Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), which has since attracted Indian, Arab and other media centres.

The China Media Centre (CMC) exists to study the world’s largest media system. Its establishment shows the university’s recognition that the study of any aspect of China requires specialisation.

The University of Westminster’s involvement with China goes back to the 1950s. The first institution to specialise in modern spoken Chinese, we taught generations of diplomats about China while welcoming students and visiting researchers from Xinhua News Agency, China Central China Media Centre University of Westminster London HA1 3TP +44 (0)8357 7354 [email protected] www.chinamediacentre.org

Television, the People’s Daily and other leading Chinese organisations.

Funded initially by a grant from the Quintin Hogg Foundation, the China Media Centre has provided for itself since 2007 by winning consultancy contracts from the British, Danish, Chinese and Swedish governments plus sponsorship from British companies for specific activities.

Through such activities we have made connections with Chinese institutions and individuals, which make research possible and allow us to learn from Chinese officials and media professionals. These have included the Chairman of Banking Reform Commission, the Vice Minister of Commerce, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Vice President of National People’s Congress (NPC) and such leading media professionals as the Deputy President of China Central Television, the President of Hunan Television, founder of Caixin magazine, leading scholars from China Communications, Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan and Renmin universities, as well as senior leaders from provincial and city governments.

China Media Centre activities have also funded scholarships, fee-waivers, conferences, seminars and research visits, as well as day-to-day administration so that today it is able to connect the Chinese and European media in three ways:

• Scholarship: research including team projects and individual publications, as well as regular series of seminars, workshops, annual conferences, debates and innovative curricular development, both independently and in collaboration with practitioners and scholars in China.• Dialogue: a forum in the UK, promoting discussion on the different media systems and networks into the information channels of China. We provide consultancy to leading Chinese media organisations and are contracted by European governments projecting their media in China.• Professional development: China Media Centre, through its China Professional Leadership Programme, is the focus for large numbers of Chinese visiting scholars, practitioners and students who are working, or will work in their country’s media and for whom their first experience of abroad is London and the China Media Centre.

China Media Centre, Director, Prof. Hugo de Burgh

Hugo de Burgh BA(Hons) MA PhD FRSA  is Professor of the Study of Journalism and Director of the China Media Centre. He is one of a small number of academics, which has pioneered the study of the Chinese media outside the Chinese world. Hugo de Burgh’s research examines the roles of journalists, particularly investigative journalists, in both Britain and China. He has published books and academic articles on both.

Hugo de Burgh’s current research deals with the ways in which the Chinese media are investigating and reporting environment issues and the impact of this upon Chinese media and government. The adaptation of the Chinese Party and government information systems to these developments and to the effects of growing internet use is a closely related topic and he has recently conducted a case study research project on this in Zhejiang, which he is currently writing up.  As an adviser to Chinese media organisations on producers’ and journalists’ professional development he has also written on this dynamic area.Hugo de Burgh established the China Media Centre as a focal point for researchers, Visiting Scholars and postgraduates from the Chinese media industries. Started with a grant from the Quintin Hogg Trust and tasked to become self-funding, its knowledge transfer and consultancy activities – along with grants for specific projects from RCUK and Leverhulme – now fund the Centre, including staff salaries, scholarships, fee waivers, academic conferences and seminars.

Hugo de Burgh holds a Professorship at Tsinghua University under the Chinese Ministry of Education’s 985 programme for bringing ‘key knowledge and talents’ to China, is International Dean in the School of International Journalism at Xinan University of Policy & Legislation and Honorary Professor of Shandong University. In addition to these leading Chinese academic institutions, he has close working relationships with Fudan University, with whom he set up the first International Media Academic Exchange in 1997, and China Communications University, where a Research Summer School is held each year. In 2010 he was appointed to Chair the Board of the International Accreditation Committee for Media and Communications of Tsinghua University.
