Sulzer Pumps

OHV Type OH3 Vertical Inline PumpProduct Evolution

In the 1970’s and 1980’s there were thousands of rigidly-coupled CVA pumps sold – especially for gas plants and small process plants.

In the 1990’s the CVA8 evolved to utilize the newer hydraulics of the CAP8 and added the bearing housing.

The OHV improves upon many of the CVA8 features by incorporating the same shaft, seal and bearings from the rugged OHH. All but a few larger size OHV pumps use the OHH impellers and wear parts as well.

Sulzer Pumps also offers a low flow version –the OHVL

OHV Design FeaturesHydraulics

Flows to 1,150 m3/h (5,000 USgpm); Heads to 250 m (820 ft)

Enclosed impellers provided for increased efficiency.

34 different hydraulics with 11,000 Nss or less.

Optional impellers in 13 larger sizes for lower NPSHr.

Impeller is dynamically balanced to ISO 1940 G2.5 as standard. G1.0 is optional.

Impellers and wear parts are interchangeable with OHH in all but a few larger sizes.

Per ISO 13709 (API 610) pressure boundary components are designed to accommodate stresses.

created by 52 Bar (740 psi) on smaller sizes, 41 Bar (600 psi) on larger sizes,

caused by 2 times API 610 nozzle loads

from spiral wound gasket compression

The total of all stresses cannot exceed 25% of ultimate tensile strength x 0.8 casting factor = 20% of UTS. Then another 3 mm (1/8") corrosion allowance is added.

OHV Design FeaturesVolute Casing

Double volutes for larger sizes.

Confined controlled compression gasket with metal to metal rabbet fit.

Standard flanges are back faced ANSI B16.5 300# R.F. with required serrations.

Sulzer PumpsInline Mounting

More and more projects are being “modularized” in convenient locations

Plant modules are then shipped to remote jobsite for faster installation with less skilled workforce.

That greatly reduces remote site costs and speeds project startup.

The OHV Pump:

reduces footprint

saves in platform, FPSO deck cost

reduces installed weight

does not require grouting

will easily handle 2 times nozzle loads in Table 4 of ISO-13709 (API-610)

OHV / OHVL Design FeaturesSeal Chamber

ISO-13709 (API 610) Table 6 seal chambers for improved seal life.

All mechanical seals are cartridge type for ease of installation.

ISO 21049 (API 682) single, dual, dual pressurized or gas secondary seals are available to meet all process requirements.

ISO 21049 (API 682) piping, coolers and seal pots are supported on separate stands to provide ease of inspection and maintenance access.

Mechanical seals are interchangeable with OHH / OHHL seals for reduced inventory

OHV / OHVL Design FeaturesBearing Frame

Bearing housing is finned carbon steel for maximum heat dissipation.

2 bearing housings and 3 shaft sizes cover the entire OHV product line for maximum interchangeability.

All bearing housings are drilled and tapped for grease or oil mist lubrication.

The OHV full machined shaft is extra heavy duty with large diameter for low shaft deflection and long life, and is interchangeable with the OHH pump. The OHVL utilizes the OHHL shafts.

4140, 420 SS, Nitronic 50 and Monel are materials commonly supplied to meet application requirements.

OHV / OHVL Design FeaturesBearings and Lubrication

Bearings are interchangeable among OHH, OHHL, OHV and OHVL pumps.

7300 series thrust bearings are back to back, heavy duty 40 deg. angular contact with machined brass cages.

6200 series ball radial bearing has required C3 clearance.

Vertical duty Protech bearing isolators are standard. Vertical duty Inpro isolators are optional.

Grease lubrication can be supplied for services to 177° C (350° F). Pure oil mist lubrication can be used at any temperature up to pump limit of 232° C (450° F).

OHV / OHVL Design FeaturesCouplings, Guards and Cooling

The same Metastream TSCS, Thomas 71, Kopflex KD-2 non-lubricated couplings used on the OHH / OHHL can be supplied on the OHV or OHVL.

The standard coupling guard meets ISO 13709 (API 610) and OSHA requirements. Other materials are available to meet ATEX and customer specifications.

For warm ambient, warm to hot operating temperatures, or 2 pole speeds with larger pump sizes - and grease lubrication, the OHH low noise fan is added on the driver end of the shaft.

With grease lubrication and pumpage > 121° C (250° F), the non-drive end fan is added.

Pure oil mist lubrication is acceptable at any temperature and is required > 177° C (350° F)

OHV / OHVL Design FeaturesPump & Driver support stand

The OHV / OHVL pump and driver support stand is a heavy fabrication with continuous welds and gusseted for extra strength.

FEA was used to analyze the stand to assure that pumps operate well away from any natural frequencies –per ISO 13709 (API 610).

They are predrilled for the optional Sulzer back pullout removal system should that option be desired at a later date.

They are fully machined to assure flat mounting surfaces and alignment rigidity.

Sulzer PumpsOHVL – low flow

The OHVL is the low flow version of the OHV.

It utilizes the OHV bearing frame with an OHHL shaft to secure the OHHL low flow impeller.

The casing cover and diffuser are also from the OHHL.

The ISO 21049 (API 682) cartridge type mechanical seals fit OHH, OHV, OHHL and OHVL.

The OHVL casing was CFD modeled and tested for reliable suction performance.

Like the OHHL, inducers are available on larger sizes for further improved suction performance.

Sulzer PumpsOHVL – low flow performance

The OHVL performance is identical to the OHHL.

It will produce more than 400 m (1,300 ft) in a single stage.

Flow ranges from 0.2 m3/h (1 USgpm) to about 50 m3/h (220 USgpm).

NPSHr is excellent.

Impeller standard clearance is a liberal 0.75 mm (0.030") for thermal tolerance.

Impellers are investment cast for smooth, repeatable performance.

Sulzer Pumps

OHV / OHVLInvestment in ManufacturingIn the past years, Sulzer Pumps has invested heavily in overhung pump manufacturing.

Some examples:

New multi axis SHW machiningcenter in place (two shift operation).

Relocation of other machiningcenters to this factory to furtherenhance efficiency.

Upgraded test facilities– CATS data capture software

– Additional Test Loop with lower NPSH tank

– Low Flow test loop
