WELCOME

October 2 2019

Dear MBK Community Leaders, Partners, and Friends:

Welcome to the 2019 My Brother’s Keeper Ohio Statewide Convening! We are honored to have you join us today.

This convening would not be possible without the support of The Ohio State University, the Office of Senator Sherrod Brown, MBK Ohio chapter leadership, our event sponsors, and countless community partners from across the state.

We launched MBK Ohio last October to create a support system for Ohio’s existing MBK communities that accepted President Obama’s call to action to implement cradle-to-career strategies to improve life outcomes for boys and young men of color and ensure all youth reach their full potential. Over the past year, we’ve traveled all around the state to work with MBK community leaders and assess the local landscape as they plan programs, design interventions, and track progress to improve outcomes from pre-K through college.

There is much work still to be done, but I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. Today’s gathering will provide a space for community members, leaders, local residents, organizers, and young people from across the state to reflect, learn from one another, share best practices, and help MBK communities develop a plan of action for racial equity in their communities. We are grateful to have you join us in the effort to advance the mission of My Brother’s Keeper.

Enjoy the convening!

Kyle Strickland, MBK Ohio Director and Senior Legal Analyst, Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity

ABOUT

MBK OHIO OVERVIEW

In 2014, President Obama launched My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) and called on communities across the country to take action to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color and ensure all youth reach their full potential. Nearly 250 cities accepted the call to action by launching local-based initiatives. In Ohio, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has helped community leaders launch MBK chapters in more than 10 regions throughout the state since 2015.

While several of Ohio’s MBK communities have made tremendous progress since the launch of the MBK initiative, many communities have experienced leadership transitions and are in need of more guidance and support. Understanding this need, My Brother’s Keeper Ohio was launched in October 2018 to create a learning community and support system for Ohio’s MBK communities. The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity at The Ohio State University leads the coordination of the statewide network and works in partnership with the university’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Senator Sherrod Brown to help MBK communities build capacity, implement evidence-based strategies, and measure progress in closing opportunity gaps..

The National My Brother’s Keeper challenge identified six key milestones along the life path that most impact future success for young people:

1. Entering School Ready to Learn2. Reading at Grade Level by Third Grade3. Graduating High School Ready for College and Career4. Completing Post-Secondary Education or Training5. Successfully Entering the Workforce6. Reducing Violence and Providing a Second Chance

MBK OHIO STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS

Beyond our alignment with national best practice, MBK Ohio understands the necessity of generating innovative solutions that work across all Ohio communities. The role of MBK Ohio is to support community leaders in the following three strategic focus areas:

1. Equitable Access to High Quality Educational Experiences and Programs Pre-K Through College

2. Economic Empowerment & Reducing Wealth Gaps3. Mentorship and Social Emotional Supports

SHERROD BROWN United States Senator

A lifelong Ohioan, Senator Sherrod Brown has spent his career fighting for the Dignity of Work, and for social and economic justice. Sherrod has a reputation for listening – conducting more than 1,500 public events in all of Ohio’s 88 counties, Ohio’s senior senator listens to workers, farmers, small businesses, civil and human rights advocates, and veterans, and brings their ideas to Washington. And it’s those ideas and community input that are helping him deliver results for the people of Ohio.

Senator Brown serves as Ranking Member on the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Finance Committee, the Agriculture Committee, and is the longest serving Ohioan on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Sherrod drives a Jeep made by union workers in Toledo, Ohio, and his suits are made by union workers outside of Cleveland. He was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio, where he was an Eagle Scout and spent summers working on his family’s farm. He is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz. They live in Cleveland, Ohio with their rescue dogs, Franklin and Walter, and have three daughters, a son, a daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren.
