Two Kinds of Free Kicks

Direct Free KickA goal may be scored against the

opponents on first touch of the ball

Indirect Free Kick

A goal can NOT be scored until ball is touched by any other player

• Ball is “in play” when: – Kicked and moves– Leaves penalty area (if appropriate)

• Goal can be scored when:– Ball is “in play”– Ball is touched by 2nd player on IFK– Ball is kicked into opponents goal

“Quick” Free Kick

• Do not interfere unless:– Kicking team insists on 10 yards– Encroachment is severe– “Quick” restart is not taken

• Kicker restarting prior to the opponents retiring is at risk of losing possession

• Hand signal if IFK

Penalty Kick

A penalty kick is awarded if the defending team commits any of the DFK fouls within their own penalty area

Penalty Kick Requirements

• Requirements that must be met:– Ball stationary, on penalty mark– Kicker and goalkeeper are identified and

properly positioned– All others are at least ten yards from the ball,

on the field, outside penalty area and behind penalty mark

– Signal must be given by referee

Penalty Kick Requirements

• Requirements (cont.)– Ball must be kicked and moved forward– Kicker cannot play ball a second time

until someone else has touched it– Goalkeeper may not leave goal line

– Stutter step or faking by kicker is not allowed

– Kicker may not run from outside the penalty area

• No “reduce to equate” players if other team is playing short
