NEW BUSINESSIn order to accommodate scheduling, President Take-

moto announced some action items will be taken out of sequence.

A. Toro Computer & Service 3-Year AgreementThe Toro NSN Service Agreement, for the Toro Irriga-

tion Controller system used to manage the irrigation, ex-pires October 31, 2013. Landscape Director Hogan pre-sented the TORO NSN “Optimum” plan proposal for computer replacement and service agreement continua-tion. The Optimum plan provides a new computer capable of handling the extensive program management required by the OHCC system, 24 hour support phone service, an emergency paging service to Toro NSN, extended war-ranty, free software updates, and free 24 hours hardware replacement. The Service Agreement is for a term of 36 months and costs $8,999.

Motion made and seconded (B. Farrell/D.Lopez) to re-new the Toro Service Agreement “Optimum” plan, for a 36 month period for a cost not to exceed a one-time fee of $9,000. Motion passed unanimously. Designated Fund-ing: Reserves Acct#2425. There were no homeowner com-ments.

B. Relocation of the O’Connell NurseryThe O’Connell Nursery is currently located in the

parking lot area outside of the Maintenance building on Ocean Hills Drive, and the area has become more crowd-ed with the addition of the irrigation parts container. Landscape Director Hogan made a recommendation to relocate the nursery, including plant material and assort-ed bags to free up considerable parking lot space and provide safety for both pedestrians and vehicles and eas-ier access for deliveries.

Motion made and seconded (B. Farrell/I. Landis) to re-locate the O’Connell nursery to the northern side of the

RV lot next to the cleanout station. Motion passed unan-imously. Designated Funding: O’Connell Tree Remov-al Cost $700: 5290-1008. There was one homeowner com-ment.

Motion made and seconded (I. Landis/D.Lopez) to put on HOLD installing 199 LF of six foot high 11 gauge gal-vanized chain link fence to enclose the area at a cost not to exceed $4,280. Motion passed unanimously. There were no homeowner comments.

C. ARC Appeal Hearing – Penick & WaltonThe owners Walton/Penick at 4723 Majorca Way re-

quested an appeal hearing for a denial issued by the Ar-chitectural Committee for the installation of a walkway. The homeowners requested permission to add a walkway from their front walkway to the street for easier access. There is currently no approved similar modification else-where in the community. The homeowner was offered al-ternatives for the walkway expansion and modification options.

Motion made to approve the ARC appeal (I. Landis) and failed for lack of a second. ARC denial stands. There were three homeowner comments.

The proposals for 250 and 500 chairs were received from Mr. York and presented to the Board for consideration.

Motion made and seconded (S. Sampsell/I. Landis) to table this item until the FMC Storage Recommendation Report is presented. Motion passed unanimously. There were four homeowner comments.

Howdy Ya’ll! Sorry, after a quick trip to North Caroli-na, the accent just lingered! I made the trip home to wel-come my son back from Afghanistan. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Veterans in our com-munity who have served our nation. I know first-hand the selfless sacrifice that is made by the service member and their family for our freedom, as I have two sons serving active duty, one a Marine and one a Navy Corpsman. In order to accommodate the Veteran’s Day event, the No-vember Master Board meeting start time was pushed back to 2:00pm. Again, thank you for your service and for your support of the military service members and their families.

Hard to believe we will be carving turkey and hanging holiday lights shortly. The Woodchucks are busy prepar-

ing their gifts for the military families, and the display of their handiwork will really kick off the holiday cheer along with the tree decoration. The Master Board is busy making their list and checking it twice, trying to set pri-orities for the many projects planned for the Community. They are ever mindful of the cost and the benefit for each homeowner and weigh all options carefully.

The work has begun with the initial CC&R Ad Hoc Committee to review the first draft to our 30-year-old documents. In addition, this group will be advising the Board on how to best proceed to ultimately bring a suc-cessful conclusion to this effort. Some other projects un-derway include the fuel modification area to thin out non-native species and fire abatement. This work will be addressed along with the tree maintenance during the cooler months.

The website continues to grow and expand. We urge each person to sign up and log on to www.oceanhillscoun-tryclub.com. It only takes a few minutes to get plugged in to all of the wonderful events going on in your commu-nity. You can buy and sell items, find out your neighbors names and addresses for sending out holiday greetings, or get the time for that next great party with your favor-ite group of friends. It never slows down here, just chang-es gears for the next great event. ENJOY!

Hello again, and welcome to the busy Holiday season. I think most of you are aware, but this year we have a very rare occurrence — Thanksgiving Day is the day that Hanukah begins, so we have overlapping Holidays!

The Board is looking at the many projects we face in the coming year, and is working to place some relative priorities on the projects, and so we scheduled a Special meeting on October 3 to talk about them.

On October 3, the Board first met in Executive Ses-sion. Items discussed were legal opinions, potential liti-gation and personnel issues. Immediately following that session, the Board met in a Special Session. Actions taken at that meeting were:

•  Authorized PCM to enroll utility bill payment into

the auto payment program. This will allow for faster pro-cessing of invoices from utility companies without com-promising the review and approval process. The utilities involved are: City of Oceanside Water, City of Oceanside Refuse Disposal, AT&T, Cox, Verizon and SDG&E.

•  Approved the recordation of 2 liens.•  Appointed  Patricia  Haugen  to  the  Facilities  Man-

agement Committee. In addition, the Board heard a presentation from our

Insurance Broker, Curt LeBarre, outlining the current HOA insurance coverage, and heard a brief update from Don Lopez, Chair of the CC&R restatement Ad Hoc Com-mittee.

Following the formal section of the meeting, the Board began an informal review of many of the projects that will need our attention in the coming year. We discussed each item in general, to ensure that all Board members had a common understanding of the scope and intent of the project. The intent is to place relative priorities on each project, so that we can be sure to expend the Associ-ations resources wisely. The Board is still working on the list, and we will be discussing it in a future Board meet-ing.

At the regular October Board meeting, the following actions were taken:

•  After  reviewing  comments  received  from  a  home-

scape Committee regarding tree removal and trimming, a revision to the Tree Policy, turf dethatching and reseed-ing of the front entry and clubhouse area, and the annual Fire Hazard Abatement work.

•  Approved a recommendation from the AV Commit-tee to have Staff request a scope of work and proposal from our AV Consultant, Jake Henricksen to review the stage lighting and also to consider adding ceiling micro-phones in the Mykonos room.

Immediately following the Monday Session, the Board met in Executive session. Items discussed were third par-

ty contracts, member disciplinary hearings, potential lit-igation, personnel, delinquency review, Executive com-mittee reports, and approval of minutes.

Please note that due to the planned absence of three Board Members, we have changed the date of the Novem-ber Regular Board meeting. The first session will be held on November 11 at 2pm, and the second session on No-vember 14 at 10am. We welcome all homeowners to at-tend and participate in the monthly meetings.

landscape committeeBy Alma Sisco-Smith, Chairperson

The Landscape Committee met on Oct 4 and had a productive meeting that led to three recommendations to the Master Board as well as finalizing actions on land-scape issues. The three recommendations were: Fuel Modification for Area 1, required clearance and associ-ated costs; De-thatching and re-seeding of the clubhouse areas; Tree Maintenance Policy Revision. I hope to pro-vide sufficient information to update all interested res-idents.

Fuel Modification of Area#1: There are three areas surrounding OHCC that share easements and/or require-ments with SDGE, Tri-City Fire Depts., and the CA Fish and Game to clear these areas on a yearly rotation basis. This year between November and January, the area be-hind the RV lot and the HOA from Shadowridge Drive down to Cannon Road will be cleared of debris and non-native plants. Tom Hogan, Landscape Operations Direc-tor, has oversight responsibility for this work.

De-thatching and Re-seeding of the clubhouse area was given a good deal of attention, and this decision/rec-ommendation simply came down to the fact the club-house is one of our highly populated and visible areas, that requires the work to be done. The current grass will brown in late fall and winter, whereas the re-seeding with perennial rye will provide green turf during the winter.

Tree Maintenance Policy revision was an important and timely step. The Committee had become concerned with the unprecedented requests for tree removals in common areas due to “excessive mess”. Yet visits to re-

view the sites clearly revealed a wide range for determin-ing and tolerating excessive mess. Trees by their nature will drop fading blossoms, leaves and if deciduous, pods and bark. As a result, the Committee recommended revi-sion of the condition for tree removal to excessive debris causing potential damage to property or vegetation, de-leting the condition of excessive mess. In addition, when a request for tree removal is received, a majority of the committee will visit the site and a majority vote is re-quired to recommend removal.

And – at last – the OHCC Master Plant List has been completed thanks to Betty Theel and Linda Wass for their tenacity, compiling all the trees, shrubs, and vines. The Village Trees are not included here. And the “gold-en nugget” is an updated color atlas of the plants! The Master List should be up on the web soon and copies also available at the HOA*. Each Village Landscape Chairper-son will receive a copy of the Color ‘Atlas’ and residents may request a copy from HOA. (*Copies available for a $10 fee, payable by check.)

The next meeting will be held in the HOA conference room at 10:00a.m. on November 1.

Ron Lewis

If you have one of the 10 “standardized” Medicare Supplement plans, the coverage for these plans is identical, except the rates change every year and vary significantly from one company to the next!

For example, the current rates for a Plan F Medicare Supplement for a 70 year old living in the 92056 zip code range from $157.63 per month ($1,891.56 per year) to $217.62 per month ($2,611.44 per year)! That’s a difference of $719.88 per year! Like car insurance, it’s important to shop around every year because you’re probably paying too much!

As an independent agent, I represent YOU, not any particular insurance company. For a free, no obligation quote, please visit my website or call me today!

I will do the shopping for you, and more than likely, I can save you money on your insurance premiums!

If you have health conditions that you think will prevent you from qualifying, I can still get you coverage (for no additional cost). Call for more details.

PS Also specializing in “non-traditional” long-term care (LTC) insurance plans that are fully refundable and are guaranteed not to have future rate increases.

Thank you,

safety cornerBy Leonard Weinstein,Director of Community Patrol Service (CPS)

Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.Turkey day is fast approaching. Can any of you begin

thinking of the aroma of roasting turkey and stuffing? As family and friends begin descending upon OHCC for the holiday, our gate will become very busy. Please plan ahead and enter your family and guests into the dwell-ingLive system before Turkey day, November 28.

A reminder again this month. As we approach the end of 2013, your Community Patrol is endeavoring to ensure that all residents have had their Emergency Monitoring System (EMS) tested for the year. Having this system properly functioning is for your own safety and welfare. Should you receive a request to schedule an appoint-ment, please work with the officer to ensure your system is properly functioning.

Key holders, M.A.R.T.s, automobile panic buttons, lock boxes. These have been addressed multiple times throughout the year, however CPS officers continue to find residents with medical emergencies who either do not have any of these devices or don’t use them. In Au-gust, Officers responding to a welfare check found a resi-dent lying on the floor. He estimated he’d been there for

some eight hours and thought he’d had a mild stroke. For-tunately there was an unlocked door and he was alive and transported to the hospital. He had neither a M.A.R.T., a key holder on record nor a lock box. In September, anoth-er resident was found on her garage floor on a Monday and she stated she’d been there since Friday night. She did have a vehicle key/panic button device, in her hand, but hadn’t used it. Again, fortunately she was found alive and transported to the hospital. Please consider the in-formation above as well as your own circumstances and ensure you are addressing your potential needs. Should anyone wish additional information, in this regard, please contact me at the front gate.

Personal Preparedness Tip: Know where to get infor-mation and assistance during a disaster.

SHOULD YOU NEED ASSISTANCE, THE FRONT GATE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 760-758-7111.

Be SAFE, Be SMART, and most of all, BE HAPPY. Once again, thanks for your time and thanks for reading The Safety Corner.

Recreation News

Where has the time gone? The Recreation Depart-ment is about to “crank up” for the holidays, take no-tice “crack up” was not used to convey my point. It just dawned on us that New Year’s Eve tickets are going on sale, the Woodchuck Toy Drive begins November 25 and the Veterans Day Recognition on the 11th at 11 am is al-most here. Please look in the Newsletter for details about all three of these programs. The holidays may be right on top of us but the Choral Society has been singing for months now, getting ready for their big event in Decem-ber, the holidays do bring out the best in all of us.

The Fitness Center has added one new piece of equip-ment, a recumbent elliptical. Some of the equipment has been moved around to place each piece in the best loca-tion- with safety in mind. The Fitness Sub-Committee of the CSC frequently reviews suggestions that come their way so please feel free to let the Community Service members know.

The Transportation Services schedule has been changed a bit. The schedule has been extended on Thursdays to 2 pm. This will allow those that would like to go out and have a bite to eat time to fulfill this desire. The Las Posas Shopping Center has been included for a lunch destination. This will only be a trial run for three months, in order, for the Community Services Committee time to evaluate the usage. Remember the Mall Trip to Fashion Valley is November 25.

The flu shots sponsored by Walgreen’s, in October, pro-vided immunizations to over 100 people. The local drug store welcomed the opportunity to be of service and they look forward to coming next year.

The pool will continue to keep its 84 degree temper-

ature throughout the year. The Jacuzzi continues to be cleaned on Tuesdays so please keep that in mind. So there is no excuse not to come by and get some exercise. One of the benefits of swimming is to help reduce the pain in arthritic joints. Two water exercise classes are taught by independent instructors that are qualified to teach these benefits. Flyers are available in the Clubhouse racks that will tell the times and days of instruction.

Louise Ries, our Event Coordinator is handling all res-ervations for 2014. Notices of the process are available throughout the Clubhouse. The next group to receive the paperwork will be classes, games, cards and interest groups on November 1. The paperwork will be located outside Louise’s office. Inputting all the reservations into the computer is a time consuming task, so be aware that Louise will pull herself off the airwaves to do just that. In other words she may be very busy in November and De-cember, please direct any questions to her office at ex-tension 203. Do not assume she has taken care of your reservation, she requires a piece of paper from everyone to begin the process. With averaging over 600 programs a month, it is not possible for staff to remember every de-tail. We appreciate your help and patience during this time.

The Clubhouse will close at 5 pm on Thanksgiv-ing Day. The entire staff would like

to wish OHCC residents and their families a wonderful Thanks-

giving, may the memories you share together give your hearts years of joy. Happy Thanksgiving!

“Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.”

employee spotlightOscar Marin is one of our newer

CPS officers who, in the short time he has been at Ocean Hills Coun-try Club, has shown himself to be a valuable addition to the staff. He brings a number of years of both patrol and customer relations back-ground to his position, having served in the U.S. Army as well as in the National Guard in both Illi-nois and California and having been a customer ser-vice manager in a large corporation.

Oscar is the type of officer that one would always want on staff. He is one of the first to step up when the need arises. He has worked all three shifts in our community and has become intimately familiar with all phases of those shifts.

Some of Oscar’s passions consist of his family, his wife, 5-year-old daughter and 1-year- old son as well as experimenting with computer software. He is soft spoken and very friendly. The next time you see Oscar, please say hello.

still searching for the Club president for 2014. We also shared stories about our day and a half fishing adventure on

October 1. The seas were up and the wind blew, and we had a tough day of fishing. Our sixteen an-glers hung in there and fished from dawn to dark, catching 26 Yellowtail, 17 Bluefin Tuna, three Yel-lowfin Tuna, two Dorado, and two Skipjack Tuna. The jackpot was won by guest Kalim Owens with a nice 28 pound Bluefin Tuna.

Please join us at the final dinner meeting of the year on the evening of November 12 for fun and fel-lowship about angling in our local waters, plans for the 2014 year, and the latest “fish stories.”

with the October 7 Theatre Arts presentation of Jeff Johnson; the BOD meetings October 14 and 17; and the Theatre Arts production of Potpourri on Octo-ber 25 and 26.

The November BOD meetings have been resched-uled one week earlier to Monday, November 11 at 2 pm and Thursday, November 14 at 10 am. This will accommodate the Veterans Day Celebration on No-vember 11 at 11 am

A motion was made and passed during the Sep-tember 24 Audio Visual Committee meeting to hire consultant Jake Hendricksen of Morningstar Pro-ductions to review and recommend solutions for im-proved stage lighting in Abravanel Hall and remote audio microphones for the Mykonos Room and the HOA Conference Room. This recommendation will be reviewed the BOD for approval.

Uniform shirts were purchased and issued to ac-tive volunteers. The shirts are black polos, with an embroidered patch “Ocean Hills - Audio Visual” over the left breast. These shirts will identify our volunteers during shows and special events.

Members of the AV Committee continue to work

with Cox, PCM, and private contractors to imple-ment the Channel 12 programming and reception. The current recommendation is to remove the Chan-nel 12 analog and replace it with a digital chan-nel interface to provide Standard and High Defini-tion formats. This will allow us to re-implement the Bulletin Board and live productions such as Board Meetings and also recorded events. More informa-tion is forthcoming on this issue.

The AVC has implemented a regular AV train-ing day each month to train new AV Volunteers. This training day is the third Wednesday of each month from 4 pm to 6 pm in Abravanel Hall and has been well attended. If you are not presently a volunteer and are interested in learning about Audio Visual, please stop by and join us for one of these training days.

BilliarDs clUBThe Billiards Club was busy in Septem-

ber. On September 10 we spent an evening with Cal-

vin Coker, a pool professional who has run 257 balls in straight pool. Yes, without missing even one. That makes him 8 times as good as anyone here. He start-ed out by giving a private lesson to two players, but so many kibitzers and assorted hangers-on showed up to watch that it was a very public private les-son. He then showed us many attractive pool cues, and four of our members made a purchase. Did the new cues help their games? Well, probably not much, but it’s a good feeling to use a proper instru-ment - even if it’s better than you are.

Calvin then gave a 90 minute seminar on how to play pool, covering all the basics of stance, grip, bridge, and stroke. I do hope you got to see his

warmup. He spread all 15 balls on the table at ran-dom, and proceeded to play 8-ball like you’ve never seen it. He decided to take the stripes, and proceed-ed to sink every striped ball…without missing. In-stead of then sinking the 8-ball to win, he then sank every solid ball…without missing. Then he sank the 8. Fifteen shots, 15 balls made. By the way, Cal-vin is “one of us.” That is, he’s old enough to live here. Gives us all hope.

Many of you know Marshall (and Joyce) Coil, our President Emeritus. Very emeritus – the man has been President of the Billiards Club 15 times! On the 12th Marshall performed his last official duty, teaching classes on two very different pool games, 7-Ball and Kansas. The Club then held a going-away party for Marshall and Joyce. They have now moved to a Continuing Care Retirement Community in nearby Pacific Beach. They are living independent-ly there, but like the idea that extra care is avail-able should the need arise. Our Club owes Marshall a great debt of gratitude for his many (many) years

of exemplary service, and wishes him every happi-ness in his new home.

On the 25th, we held a 7-Ball tournament. For the “A” players, Larry Vinikow defeated Danny-Joe Burton for first place, with Charlie Payne and Ken Rose tied for third. In the “B” bracket, Jeanne Marks beat Jerry Brunkala for first place, with Ha-zel Bobach and Cal Roe tied for third. Larry and Jeanne get high-fives, their names on the winner’s plaque and one of the new Billiards Club hats that cannot be purchased – they can only be won. When you see them, congratulate them with a friendly pat on some politically correct part of their body.

The Club has at least 7 lessons and one tourna-ment every month except December – when we rest. Later this month, at 1 pm on November 21, we will stage the Ocean Hills Billiards Club 8-Ball Championship. The entire community is cordially invited to come watch and cheer for your favorites in our biggest tournament of the year. We hope to see you there!

BirDwatchers clUBOur last meeting for the year was last

month when we had a party with great food, music, prizes, and fun for all. At that time, officers were elected for 2014: Andy Truban, President; Joan Co-mito, Vice President; Sylvia Carson, Treasurer; and Dora Truban, Secretary.

Bird walks will continue the second Tuesday of the remaining months this year. This month’s bird walk will be NOVEMBER 12 to a relatively new area at the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar. We will have an excellent birder, Jack Friery, as our docent. Meet at the overflow lot by 8:45 am to form carpools and receive directions. We DEPART AT 8 am. The area is level, but gravely so wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick if you use one. Also have water, hat, and optional money for gas and lunch at Mil-ton’s Deli at the Flower Hill Mall.

The San Dieguito River Lagoon began as part of a $90 million dollar mitigation project to compen-sate for environmental damage caused by Southern California Edison’s San Onofre Nuclear Generating

Station. The birding/walking trail starts at San An-dres Drive off of

Via de la Valle and now extends to El Camino Real after the Horse Park Trail section was added. There is also a boardwalk trail that extends from San Andres under HWY 5 and behind the fairgrounds to Dog Beach in Del Mar.

The west side of the lagoon can be reached from Via de la Valle by turning off Jimmy Durante Blvd. onto San Dieguito Drive. There you will find the re-stored Grand Avenue Bridge which was built in 1942 providing access to a U.S. Navy blimp airfield. At that time the Del Mar Fairground buildings served as barracks, galleys, and mess halls for the Navy. Af-ter the war, the blimp field was converted to a small airport by the county which purchased the land from the Navy for $1. The airport was shut down in 1959 in anticipation of the construction of Interstate 5.

getting closer and closer and our Chorale is work-ing hard in preparation for our December Concert? We only have 5 rehearsals left! We have new mem-bers and more men. The men are coming through loud and clear and giving the ladies a “run for their money!” We are looking forward to not only sound-

ing great but looking great! Our (always free) Holiday Concert will be held

on Sunday, December 15 at 2 pm this year and what would our Holiday Concert be without our annual raffle? This will be the 4th year for our annual fund-raising raffle and you all know what wonderful gifts we have for you. The greatest thing is you may put your tickets into the gift of your choice so when you win, you win what you want!

We have some new arrangements that we are all enjoying and yes, we will be doing Handel’s Hallelu-jah Chorus! It gives us goose bumps when we sing it and hope you all will enjoy it as well! Our two beau-tiful Hawaiian Dancers will again be joining us, as well as our soloists; Ladies Quartet and we have a couple of new surprises for you. The only act that re-ceived an “encore” from the audience in May, “The Men’s Quartet” will again be singing and “sort of dancing” for this concert. You are going to like what you see!

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, December 15 at 2 pm. It is a great way to get into the Holiday Spirit!

WEEKEND FILMS: Films are shown in the Club-house Ladies Club Room every Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless exempted by a priority event or hol-iday. Show times are at 2:30 pm, 5 pm and 7:30 pm each day unless the film is over 2 hours and 20 min-utes in length. When this occurs, the 5 pm show will be omitted. The week’s program is published every Thursday and is also available on the Movie Hot-line 760-758-1216, Ext 5. It is advisable to check the MPAA ratings for possibly offensive subject matter before attending.

Coming to Ocean Hills from approximately mid-November to mid-December are: “Frances Ha” (78), “Broken” (72), “Computer Chess” (71), “Red 2” (63), “Renoir (French)” (76), “Barbara (German)” (79), “The Attack” (Heb/Arab)” (72), and “Hannah Arendt” (Germ/French/Heb)” (71). Unfortunately, the dearth of quality Hollywood films coming in DVD continues unabated while the availability of high quality foreign language films persists.

Recently released films of exceptional critical ac-claim (75 or over) to go and see or await DVD release next year are as follows: “Short Term 12” (84),“The World’s End” (81), “Il Futoro” (80), “Blue Caprice” (76), “Mother of George” (Eng/Yoruba) (75), “Wad-jda” (Arabic) (79), “Enough Said” (78), “A Touch of Sin” (75), “Gravity” (96) and “Captain Phillips” (83).

The numbers appearing after the above film ti-tles represent the combined average critical and popular rating on a scale of 0 to 100 as published by Rotten Tomatoes.com and IMDB.com. For recent releases, Metacritic.com is the source. A rating be-tween 60 and 100 signifies the highest rated films.

MIDWEEK FILMS: A critically acclaimed con-temporary Foreign Film from any country is shown every Wednesday at 7 pm only. Seating is on a first come, first served basis and guests of residents are always welcome. This is in addition to the three scheduled shows on alternating Fridays. See Week-end Films above for coming titles. Other potential selections are to be found on the Coming Attrac-tions Bulletin Board.

FOREIGN FILM CLASSICS: Scheduled on Mon-day, November 18 at 1 pm by the Foreign Film Clas-sic Group is the 1963 French classic “Contempt” (86), directed by Jean-Luc Godard and starring Bri-gitte Bardot, Jack Palance and Michel Piccoli (We Have a Pope). You are encouraged to take advantage of a rare opportunity to revisit these classics again or to see them for the first time.

If you possess a collection of any DVD or VHS for-eign language films whether only one or more and would be willing to lend them to the community for viewing in the future, please provide a list of titles and language and leave them for the attention of

GarDen clUB Have you started decorating for the

holidays? Do you need some new ideas? If so, then don’t miss the Garden Club meeting to be held Wednesday, November 13 in Abravanel Hall for a demonstration of floral design with a twist. At 10 am, Floral Designer George Speer will amaze us with a variety of holiday designs that should inspire us to create our own masterpieces. Not only will we get to see an artist at work, several lucky raffle win-ners will take home some of his designs! Coffee and treats will be served from 9:30 until 10 am and the general meeting will follow Mr. Speer’s presenta-tion.

The title for George Speer’s presentation is “Think Outside the Box for the Holidays.” Speer will encourage us to take a fresh look at using local plant material, found objects, and common items in a different way in order to decorate for many fall and winter holiday celebrations. Speer likes to cre-ate large contemporary designs in unusual contain-ers. When designing, he uses as few as two products or a collection of many.

Speer will explain that floral designs are often categorized in two groups – the Professional Florist and the Garden Club Designer. A florist uses lots of flowers in arrangements to be sold. The Garden Club Designer uses fewer flowers and plants to cre-ate a more sculptural arrangement. Speer has stud-ied and taken many classes in both groups and will share his knowledge while creating designs from both sides during his demonstration. His presenta-tion will help us understand the differences in de-signing floral arrangements for the home and flo-ral design for official competition. In addition, he will offer many ideas to help us feel comfortable ar-ranging flowers while sharing secrets of the trade that we can use. Speer will teach us to create an ar-rangement that adheres to art form principles, such as space, proportion, and texture.

Speer is an Accredited National Garden Clubs, Inc. Judge. He has received Design Blue Ribbons at many Flower Shows and at the San Diego County Fair. For a number of years, Speer coordinated the San Diego County Fair Floral Design competition and encouraged professional and amateur design-ers to compete together. He is currently serving on the California Garden Clubs, Inc. Nominating Com-mittee and was also the Palomar District Director from 2011 to 2013. He enjoys teaching basic and cre-ative floral design to children and leads creative de-sign workshops for adults.

Other Garden Club news includes a big thanks to Dwight Goldblatt for teaching Flower arranging classes on the Lanai. The classes were so popular that more will be held. The Garden Club also wants to extend thanks to Kathleen Payne and Irma Ojeda for the marvelous job they did as Chairs of the Plant Sales at the OHCC Flea Market. Ellen Nelson, Out-side Tour Chair, is organizing a trip to the Temecula Olive Oil Farm. Finally, don’t forget to sign up to at-tend the Holiday Paella Luncheon that will be held Wednesday, December 11.

GarDeninG news by melvina terryNovember is prune and cleanup month. If you

didn’t get your pruning done in October, be sure you get it done this month. Keep all leaves raked up as this is where the creepy-crawlies will reproduce over the winter months.

It is bulb planting time, plant more ranunculus to extend your bloom period; plant cyclamen in shade areas and plant snow drops, crocus, anemones and muscari in plastic vegetable baskets (the kind you get cherry tomatoes in) to keep them from sinking and rotting out. If you label your bulbs, it will alert you from accidently digging up bulbs out of sea-son. It is also time to plant tulips, daffodils, narcis-si, fritillaria, lily, allium and Dutch iris. These bulbs should be planted 5 to 7 inches deep, depending on their size. Rule of thumb: the bigger the bulb, the deeper you plant. Do not grow tulip bulbs year after year in the same place. Sooner or later, they may be attacked with a fungus disease called fire blight. Ei-ther change the soil or location. In other words, fol-low the principle of crop rotation.

No other types of plants will give the gardener more beauty, or a wider range of variety, color and flowering time than bulbs. They will produce flow-ers of incredible colors from one end of the grow-

ing season to the next. Nothing else will reward you with so much pleasure for so little effort. Col-or and time of bloom are the two most important el-ements to consider when planting. Good soil prep-aration is the first step to success. Make sure that the soil is loose and porous. In our soil, this means lots of perlite or vermiculite. Well-drained soil is a must or bulbs will rot. Work a bulb nutrient such as Bulb Booster into the soil. The spacing of bulbs de-pends largely on the effect that you are trying to achieve. In my opinion, the most effective planting technique is to plant most bulbs in clumps rather than lined up in rows. Space bulbs according to col-or, with the softer colors in the front and the more vibrant in the background. Group bulbs according to height and in a sequential bloom pattern for a long-lasting show of color.

GolF clUBBelieve it or not, that time of the year is

around the corner…our annual Ladies Holiday Lun-cheon. It will be on December 18 and the cost will be $25, and this year we have a fun change...it will be at Shadowridge Country Club with wonderful food and wonderful entertainment. Reservations can be made starting No-vember 1 and this will also be different. You should drop your check off at the Front Desk. Please put your choice of meal on the memo line. The choic-es will be classic Cobb salad, salmon and spinach salad, and vegetarian pasta primavera. There will be complimentary champagne and a no host bar at 11:15 am and lunch will be at 11:45 am. racQUet clUB There were over 70 people at the pool

on September 18 for the Residents/Staff Water Volleyball Match. Both the spectators and the players had a great time on this sunny afternoon. The first 5 games were between “mixed teams” with some residents and some staff on each side. Then came the much-anticipated highlight: the “Scanti-ly Clad Staff” vs. the “Antediluvian Residents.” The staff won the first game (somehow), and they got

very excited – more excited than you’ve ever seen them when they had their clothes on. Then the resi-dents won the second game, and it was time for the tie breaker. Both sides played well in a close game, but the residents finally won the decisive game 21-18. Both sides then adjourned to the patio for piz-za and cold drinks, kindly provided by PCM. And “that’s the contest that was.”

On a glorious Thursday, October 10, the last pick-leball tournament of the year was held by Herb Livsey and Dannica Wood, with 42 players partic-ipating and an additional 23 supporters for lunch. Four groups competed against one another accord-ing to a play matrix, with the goal being to play each game with different players, and also against differ-ent players. First, second, and third-place winners of the “Big Sky Novice” group were Deborah Goldwas-ser, Lynn Montjoy, and Sharon Olsen, respectively. Winners of the “Big West Intermediate” group were Suchiko Okada, Judy Gagnon, and Karen Kinney. “Mountain West Intermediate” group prizes went to David Levine, Karin Walton, and John Vinkenbrink.

A fun game, great competitors, and a beautiful venue! It doesn’t get any better than this!

A paddle tennis social is planned for November 19, with Harrison Frank and Marcia Haenle heading up the event. Also, tickets went on sale for the an-nual Sailing and Racquet Clubs’ 2013 Holiday Par-ty to be held on December 14. “The Decades” will entertain and the dinner will be catered by The Vil-lage Kitchen and Pie Shop. This is usually a sold-out event, so if you don’t have your tickets, check with the Front Desk on availability.

Finally, come on down to see the Water Volley-ball Tournament at 2 pm on Friday, November 1. Four teams will contest the two semi-final match-es, with those winners fighting it out in the Grand Finale. The bleacher seats are FREE…well, OK, all the seats are free. It’s a lot of fun—we hope to see you there.

Don’t forget–you can find all Racquet Club infor-mation and photos at our website: http://www.ohc-cracquetclub.com/.

sailinG clUBAt the October meeting, the Sailing

Club elected as its officers for 2014: Commodore, Al-lan Poulutzian; Vice Commodore, Bob Kopolow; Sec-retary, Bill Smith; Treasurer, Evy Sanfilippo; Fleet Captain, Forrest Newburg. The new officers will take over their responsibilities at the January meeting.

Vice-Commodore Allan Poulutzian discussed the annual Sailing Club – Racquet Club Holiday Par-ty, for which the Sailing Club is the host this year. The date will be Saturday, December 14 in Abrava-nel Hall. As usual, it will be an opportunity to dress up (black tie optional), and cost will be $40 per per-son for club members and $45 per person for non-

members. Ticket sales began in mid-October. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, purchase them soon, because this event always sells out.

Allan also announced that a Catalina trip was planned for October 22-24, 2014, and asked for a vol-unteer to organize it. If you were not at the meeting and would be interested, please contact Allan.

Commodore Kopolow presented an exciting vid-eo with highlights of the 34th America’s Cup race which took place in September. The New Zealand sailboat was ahead 8 races to 1 and it only took 9 races to win the cup when the American boat won 8 races in a row to take the Cup once more. It was the biggest comeback in sport’s history! What an excit-ing series of races!

While the pace of activities will slow down in the fall, there will still be opportunities for day sails. The best way to sign up is to attend the monthly meetings and sign up at the meeting. If you miss the meeting, check either the Club website or the Sailing Club folder at the Front Desk to see which captain is taking out a boat, and on which date. The Sailing Club website contains a link that informs us-ers about future sails and allows you to sign up or add your name to the waiting list. If the boat is not full, add your name to the list and put a check for $45 in the check envelope to be added to the sail. Priority goes to those who place their checks in the Sailing Club envelope earliest.

Join us at our next meeting on November 5 to en-joy delicious snacks and drinks, and to sign up for upcoming sails. Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the business meeting begins at 7:30 pm.

ing with Barbara Roe is held in the Mykonos Room from 11 am to1 pm every Friday. The 1st and 3rd are classes and the 2nd and 4th are for working on your own projects; perhaps practicing what you learned in the classes. The Saturday “Sew-In” had a good group working on their own projects. Seven ma-chines and an ironing station were set up and the big table had all kinds of projects laid out. There are pictures on the website under the September Min-utes heading. I could see the day was used to finish Club projects that were taking more than one day.

October’s Show and Tell had a fashion show fea-turing the sweatshirt jackets. It is always interesting to see what a difference color and pattern choices make. We also had samples of the poinsettia ta-ble runner and what can be done with the cradle quilts. The quilts and cradles were almost intimidat-ing; they were so beautiful. Lucky little girls will be getting them this December.

The November projects are not quite firmed up at this time so you will need to come to the Novem-ber 7 meeting to find out what we are making in No-

vember. Possible projects are the decorated plates we made last year and a tree napkin. The plates were a huge success; many of us have given them away as gifts and so need to make more.

Check out the Sewing Room. The window cover-ings are up and a “design wall” is being worked on.

Remember the website www.ohccsewingclub.com? It has pictures of our projects, show and tell and the sewing sessions. Can’t remember someone’s name? There are member portraits to help. See you in November.

And the cost is just $24 for members and $27 for non-members.

Reservations are a must for this event, and the deadline for signing up is Wednesday, November 13.

We would like to give a special thanks to the au-dio-visual volunteers. They worked hard to assure we had a smooth running show.

Our Club has written a check for $1,700 and pre-sented it to Donna Russell for the Ocean Hills Soci-ety of Performing Arts (OHSPA). We were proud to be able to help continue this wonderful program in our community.

We are now working on our show for June, 2014. It will be another wonderful performance, I’m sure!

Remember, if you love to dance, come and watch a class of tap, jazz, theater dance, belly, or Hawai-ian. We welcome new dancers! If you have any ques-tion about the classes, please call Rona Cole at 760-295-4299.

vites you to join family, friends and neighbors as we celebrate Veterans’ Day on Monday, November 11 at 11 am in Abravanel Hall. Doors will open at 10:30 am.

This day was set aside to honor our military and the job they have done to keep our nation “home of the free and home of the brave.” It is a time set aside to show our appreciation and to give thanks from a grateful nation to these brave men and wom-en for their service and often great sacrifice.

This year we will be thanking all of our veterans and we are so proud to have all of you in our Vil-lage. We will be highlighting our Vietnam Veterans. We have lots of men and women in our Village who served during Vietnam. One does not have to have been in Vietnam to qualify…only in service during the time. Our guest speaker will tell us about his ex-periences as a leader in charge of a Special Forc-es (Green Berets) unit on the ground in Vietnam as well as Cambodia and Laos. We will also have the Marine Corps Color Guard, the Rancho Buena Vista High School Wind Ensemble, our own Honor Guard and other surprises! Refreshments will be served by the Recreation Department on the Palm Court after the program.

Bring your family, friends and neighbors as we honor all of our Village Veterans. If you need trans-portation, please call Donna Russell at 760-945-5558 for arrangements.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO FLY OUR AMERICAN FLAG ON THIS SPECIAL DAY! If you need a re-placement or a kit, please call Tom Brennan at 760-842-1470.

will hopefully have walkers and hikers thankful that they are members. If you aren’t a member and would like to give us a try, perspective members are always welcome.

The first hike this month will be on Thursday, No-vember 7. We will be going to Black Mountain Park to hike the Lusardi Creek Loop Trail. This hike will be in a creek bottom so there won’t be a lot of ele-vation gain. It is about 6 miles long which is why it is rated as moderate. Those that don’t want to hike that far can treat it as an out and back going out as far as they are comfortable then returning to the trailhead the same way that they came. Lunch after the hike will be at the Elephant Bar in Poway.

The second hike will be on Friday, November 22 out on Daley Ranch in the southern part of the pre-serve. Daley Ranch is a very large nature preserve with hills, meadows, streams and ponds. We will be hiking a loop hitting the Creek Crossing Trail, the East Ridge Trail, Coyote Run, Diamond Back Trail, Sage Trail the Jack Creek Meadow Loop Trail, a lit-tle more of the East Ridge Trail, the Middle Pond Trail, and finishing off on the Ranch House Trail. The full loop trail length is 4 miles long with some hills. We will be going to Charlie’s Restaurant in Es-condido after the hike.

If you decide to join us for a hike, for personal comfort, don’t forget to bring water, good sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat on any of our hikes.

All of our hikes start at the Overflow Parking Lot where we meet at 8:30 am and carpool to the trail-head. Remember to help out the driver with some gas money if you are in a carpool.

If you would like more details on any of our hikes or on the Club, please call Jack Shabel at 760-842-8858.

See you on the trails.

wooDchUcKsChristmas is just around the corner and

it is time to remind all your friends to donate toys to Camp Pendleton Marine families. The Woodchuck toys will go on display starting Monday, November 25. This is a very important time of the year to make kids happy and show their parents that we are very concerned seniors.

The flea market ran very smoothly and a lot of old goodies went flying out the front door. The hot

dogs were really great thanks to Kathy Moskovitz and her team of gourmet chefs, Bill and Jones, Bob Nelke, Rick Thatcher, Jo Wichary, Patty and Murph Haugen, and Lois Webster.

The Ukulele Music Group with our own Bill Smith provided great music on the patio while everybody ate hot dogs.

Woodchuck president Larry Bowers wishes to thank the following for their help.

George Bush, Gary Webb, Bob Allen, Ron Stod-gill, Aaron Sugar, Dennis Lady, Ron Del Princi-pe, Frank Proscal and Bob Mellman.

A most important thank you to Chris and Louise for all their help.

There will be a meeting in December to elect of-ficers and talk about future plans for next year. All nominations should be directed to Larry Bowers. You can call or leave a message on his machine. It is even OK to nominate yourself.

It has been a busy year and maybe things will calm down a bit in the future. The remodeling took quite a bit of time but it is over so go and enjoy the shop.

Help me Ronda...Won’t you let Ronda help you! There are excellent opportunities for retired

and pre-retired homeowners to help stabilize their living expenses and lifestyles while protecting their home equity and wealth by selecting the right mortgage program. There are  better alternatives available for retirees that are investigating a reverse mortgage that will not consume their equity and give them flexibility and options in the event that they need to draw on their equity in the future. Call me for information on options, including alternatives to reverse mortgages.
