of interest and it may actually become a reality. TheBoard will begin to look at the implications of this possi-bility and like the Cannon Road project, with someadvance planning, OHCC can be in the right place at theright time if all works out. The recent decision by theBoard to hire Van Dyke Landscape Architects was anoth-er well timed alliance with a partner that will be invalu-able in the process of doing a cost analysis for theCommunity. Van Dyke will help provide reports thatshow how much we are saving with all the changes thathave been implemented recently.

The Community will have an opportunity to meet theteam of Van Dyke on Thursday, November 15 as they havebeen hired to solicit input for the future look of theCommunity landscape. The Board is seeking your opin-ions, so sign up now for this major survey event and letyour voice be heard. Allow for an hour to visit the sta-tions and help identify what you see as the vision of ourCommunity! Once the information is collected, it will betallied and used to guide the planning process. Asalways, Staff will have light refreshments provided dur-ing the event, so come down and enjoy a treat while youcheck it out! You can sign up for the 2-4pm or 4-6pm timeframe by calling or stopping by either the Clubhouse orthe HOA office. We need to know how many folks aregoing to participate so there will be enough handoutsand staff! Grab a neighbor and don’t miss this opportu-nity to have your say!

The FMC is working on the lanai area and pool deckprojects. The Board will be discussing the details of howto gain membership support for the project. Light polesare scheduled to be painted, the rapid flashing beaconfor the crosswalk by the Clubhouse will soon be installedand street sweeping is now being done more frequently. If you can’t attend a Board meeting, but have a concern, please let me know by email or note. We encourage youto attend the meetings to provide input. Homeownerforum is now held at the very beginning of the Boardmeeting on the third Thursday of each month. If youcan’t attend, tune in to Channel 12/867 to get informationon current actions of the Board.

A new committee was formed recently, for Villagelandscape issues. Called the Council of VillageLandscape Committee or CVLC, it is comprised of a land-scape representative from each Village that will meet todiscuss the common problems and solutions that affecteveryone. Jim Vienneau, President of O’ConnellLandscape, plans to meet with the group to presentideas, get feedback and more importantly, develop solu-tions.

Work has begun on the new directory, so if you need toupdate your phone and email contact, now is a good timeto get it done. Also shortly after the beginning of theyear, we will be doing the decal process. We will be get-ting back onto our normal annual schedule that wasdelayed due to a revamp of the rules and regulations andhaving a staff transition.

In my free time, I took the opportunity to enjoy somefun with the Doo Wop Club at their Rocktoberfest! I hopeto make it to some of the other events so I can get to knowyou better! I know I say this every month, but what anexciting place to work! You folks make coming to workan exciting challenge!

Summer ended on a high note with an opportunity toshare some fun in the pool with a large contingent of thecommunity in a “friendly” water volleyball game. Thanksfor showing us how to have fun and finish strong! TheStaff members who donned their suits for the event andbrought their best game were supported by those on thepool deck! The second annual Wellness Expo was held at theClubhouse on October 6. It was a resounding success!

Early on the morning of October 8, three MasterBoard members, the General Manager and LandscapeOperations Manager, along with the CEO of O’ConnellLandscape Maintenance, a partner in Van DykeLandscape Architects, and the Van Dyke IrrigationSpecialist met with the City of Oceanside Water UtilitiesDirector, a Water Utilities Division Manager, and theSenior Water Analyst, at their request, to discuss the pos-sibility of bringing reclaimed water to Oceanside and, inparticular, OHCC. If this project were to become a reali-ty, the estimated completion date, per the City, would beno sooner than 2017!

The Master Board directors along with Staff attendeda Fair Housing Training Session in Abravanel Hall onOctober 10 for almost two hours. It was a power pointpresentation given by one of Fair Housing’s regionalmanagers. It was good to hear that we are operatingappropriately and according to the law. Many questionswere asked, and we are all the wiser. The session wasvideoed in order to show it to Staff members who wereunable to be present. A Fair Housing Training Sessionwill be held annually.

On October 12, our Collection Attorney informed methat he needed an immediate authorization from theMaster Board in order to handle negotiations in a delin-quency case. An e-mail Emergency Executive Sessionwas initiated and all Master Board Directors were fortu-nately available to respond.

The monthly Executive Session and Special Meetingtook place on October 4. The agenda for the ExecutiveSession included litigation discussions and legal opinionin the presence of our attorney. A third party contract wasdiscussed and there was personnel discussion regardingsome committees. Prior Executive Session minutes(August 17 and September 10, 2012) were approved.

The Special Board Meeting immediately followed theExecutive Session and action was taken on the followingagenda items: an Executive Committee for Preparation ofthe Budget for Fiscal Year 2013-2014 (April 1, 2013 –March 31, 2014) was formed, consisting of the MasterBoard Treasurer, David Hefler; Vice-President, AngelaTakemoto; and President, Ellen Baur. Van DykeLandscape Architects bid to do an initial consult in orderto establish a clear scope of work for additional watermanagement and auditing for our Association. Their feeof $390.00 was approved; the Marketing &Communication Committee’s Recommendation to imple-ment the proposed insignia and tagline was approved;Staff was tasked with the responsibility to coordinate a“Grand Opening” for the Cannon Road Project, all OHCC

The Workshops are designed to encourage input fromall homeowners regarding our future landscaping.

All homeowners are invited to attend this importantmeeting. The information that is gathered will be used toguide the Landscape Architects and the LandscapeCommittee during the planning process.

During the month of September, representatives ofthe Landscape Committee evaluated 27 homeownerrequests for tree trimming and/or removal. Of those

twenty and thirty requests sub-mitted to the HOA for tree trim-ming and/or removal. The com-mittee makes every effort to eval-uate the requests in a timelymanner. When a request is madeto remove a tree(s), the neighborswho would be impacted by theabsence of the tree(s) areinformed in writing by theCustomer Service Specialist(Maureen Huitt). We all hate to see treesremoved, but, there are timeswhen a tree needs to be removedper the Master Board TreeMaintenance & Removal Policy. Many of our trees especially theAleppo pines and the BrisbaneBox Eucalyptus are 20 to 25 yearsold and are EXTREMELYLARGE and VERY MESSY andstill growing. They hang overpatios, lean on patio covers andstuff gutters with debris. In onecase, a homeowner was away onan extended trip during the win-ter and the Brisbane box treenext to his patio had shed somany leaves and bark that thedrains were covered and waterfrom the rain flooded the patio towithin a 1/2-inch of the frontentrance. So, please rememberthe Landscape Committee evalu-ates situations and makes a rec-ommendation to the MasterBoard. The Master Board thenvotes on the issue. Approval bythe Master Board is consideredfinal and the work can then bescheduled.

The Safety CornerBy Leonard WeinsteinDirector of Community Patrol Service (CPS)

Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.Having recently spoken to a group of new residents,

and amongst other things, discussed reporting of personsor observations that don’t appear appropriate, it occurredto me that this is a subject not discussed with you in somemonths. Please remember to contact the Front Gate toreport any persons or activity that does not appear prop-er. As I’ve said before, we’d rather have multiple “falsealarms” than not receive the report that should have beengiven to us. Your cooperation is appreciated.

On the subject of contacting the Front Gate, I’ve beentold a number of residents have inquired which numberto use in a power outage. I addressed the power issue andits effect on our telephone service with both Cox Commu-nications and the Oceanside Fire Department. Our 760-758-7111 number is the proper one to use at all times; itdoes have the capability to roll over to multiple otherphone lines. From time-to-time, residents have inquired about thepassword assigned to their home and how secure it is,given that it has been in place for previous owners and/ortenants. In conjunction with your Master Board and the

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Just when wethought activities had calmed down; we are now gearingup for the holidays.A couple of the social clubs are offer-ing turkey dinners with all the trimmings at their func-tions this month; remember that the Clubhouse closes at5 pm on Thanksgiving.

The Staff enjoyed the Water Volleyball Challenge withthe Residents in September. Thank you for an afternoonof laughter and camaraderie. It really showed us thatworking together provides better results. We are living inanticipation for the next date scheduled to make a fight-ing comeback; just for us to get in the pool was worth itall!

The Wellness Expo in October was well-attended.There was a good representation of vendors, the cateringtruck ran out of food (good for the caterer), and a numberof door prizes were given to surprised residents. TheRecreation Department is looking at providing a regularcatering truck experience for residents to participate in.So many cities are creating venues to dine in this way andwe would like to try doing it here. Stay tuned for anupdate regarding this venture.

At the end of this month the annual toy drive begins. The Woodchucks have been working all year round doingwhat they do best- toy making. Please support theirefforts and contribute whatever you can, let us make itthe biggest year yet for donations of new and unwrappedtoys.Teenagers are the most difficult to shop for and giftsare always needed for this age group.

It’s that time to make a reservation for the upcoming2013 calendar year. Louise Ries, our Event Coordinatorwill assist anyone who has questions regarding theprocess. She will be inputting all of the requests into theEvent Pro software system, purging all the 2012 reserva-tions and sending out confirmations regarding the reser-vations made. She can be reached at the Clubhouse,

extension 203.The Lost and Found is kept at the Clubhouse Front

Desk. This means that if an item is found anywhere in theCommunity it is most likely returned to the Clubhouse. The items are kept for a period of time and if they are notclaimed they are donated to charity. There are a numberof key rings with automatic car openers, single earrings, sunglasses, clothing, etc. All wet items are stored in thelocker rooms, so be sure to go there first.

November has a number of special programs beingoffered. Look on the Front Cover for the upcoming datesand in “Listen to Louise.” The so-called “claim to fame”here is the active adult lifestyle. With 47 clubs, 700-800programs on average a month, and a parking lot that isover-flowing, the Community lives up to this descriptionevery day of the year. See you somewhere in theClubhouse!

BILLIARDS CLUBThe Billiards Club has dozens of lessons and

events every year. Recently Pool ProfessionalCalvin Coker was here to give personal one-on-one lessons toover a dozen volunteers, with many Club members lookingon. Everyone learned a lot about the basics of stance andstroke, so if our players seem to be playing better…they are!

One of the damaged pool tables has been restored withgreat materials: Simonis 860 HR “Tournament Blue” cloth(Simonis of Belgium has been making pool table cloth forover 300 years!), German Artemis K66 profile rubber, andAramith (also Belgian) Tournament Pool Balls with their lat-est 4th generation Duramith Technology. These are thematerials the pros play with, so it’s no surprise that thenewly restored table has been a big hit with our players.Come in and try it – it’s on the far right, with the bright bluefelt.

The last lesson and subsequent tournament were on thepool game of “Spider.” Unlike Little Miss Muffet, Club mem-bers were not frightened away. Congratulations to formerPresident Loraine Tichenor, champion of the B group, and torunner-up Henry Siesel. Also to President Charlie Payne, the A group champion, and runner-up John Prieskorn.

The October lesson and tournament were on “Cut-Throat,” the only pool game specifically for 3 players.Winners will be announced next month. There was also an

Ballot Measures and Candidate Forum. In October a largecrew of volunteers, headed up by Ed Farley and DougWright, worked on the reprise of the Tappers show,“Footloose and Fancy Free.” Following that, AV volunteerssupported the Security and Safety presentation by UPS onOctober 18 and the Theatre Arts Showcase on October 27and 28.

During November, we are looking forward to the OHSPApresentation of the New York Tenors on November 10; theVeterans Day Program on November 11; and the Tri-CityHospital CEO presentation on November 16.

The new LED lighting for Abravanel Hall has beeninstalled and is proving to be a tremendous improvement tostage lighting and video recording. Several volunteers havebeen trained on the new lighting equipment and find it to besimple and easy to use.The new Panasonic AG-HMC80 seriesdigital HD video cameras should be installed soon. Thesecameras are state-of-the-art digital HD cameras with autofocus, telephoto, and a wide-angle capability and complywith the latest motion image compression standards. Inanticipation of the new cameras, the AV booth has beenpainted and cleaned up. Training on these new cameras willbegin as soon as they are installed.

If you desire to join the AV team and benefit from theupcoming training on the new video cameras, please call EdFarley, Steve Malone or Doug Wright.

GGAARRDDEENNIINNGG NNEEWWSS bbyy MMeellvviinnaa TTeerrrryy Continue to plant bulbs to extend your blooming period. It is bulb-planting time. Plant more ranunculus to extend

your bloom period. Plant cyclamen in shade areas. Plant

Snow drops, crocus, anemones and muscari in plastic veg-etable baskets (the kind you get cherry tomatoes in) to keepthem from sinking and rotting out. If you label your bulbs, itwill alert you from accidentally digging up bulbs out of sea-son. It is also time to plant tulips, daffodils, narcissi, fritillar-ia, lily, allium and Dutch iris. These bulbs should be plantedfive to seven inches deep, depending on their size. Rule ofthumb: the bigger the bulb, the deeper you plant. Do notgrow tulip bulbs year after year in the same place.Eventually, they may be attacked with a fungus diseasecalled fire blight. Change either the soil or location. In otherwords, follow the principle of crop rotation. However, I findthat tulips rarely repeat because they need a cold period.

No other types of plants will give the gardener morebeauty, or a wider range of variety, color and flowering timethan bulbs. They will produce flowers of incredible colorsfrom one end of the growing season to the next. Nothing elsewill reward you with so much pleasure for so little effort.Color and time of bloom are the two most important ele-ments to consider when planting. Good soil preparation isthe first step to success. Make sure that the soil is loose andporous. In our soil, this means lots of perlite or vermiculite.Well-drained soil is a must or bulbs will rot. Work a bulbnutrient such as Bulb Booster into the soil. The spacing ofbulbs depends largely on the effect that you are trying toachieve. In my opinion, the most effective planting tech-nique is to plant most bulbs in clumps rather than lined upin rows. Space bulbs according to color, with the softer colorsin the front and the more vibrant in the background. Groupbulbs according to height and in a sequential bloom patternfor a long-lasting show of color.

It is time to prune or transplant camellias, rhododendronand azalea. Strangely enough, these plants are dormant dur-ing their blooming season. Remove all but the center buds ofthe camellias for bigger/better flowers. Feed your citrus forthe last time this year. Give them a double “whammy.” Thiswill result in sweeter fruit. Also, lightly feed cacti and succu-lents. Plant violas and pansies in full sun. I prefer violas, asthey don’t look as unsightly when it is time to deadheadthem.

GOLF CLUBThis fall and early winter season, is a little

quiet tournament wise, but we do have a veryexciting special event coming up.

The annual Ladies Holiday Luncheon will be held onDecember 10 at El Camino Country Club. Due to the fact, that I, Selma Leighton, your faithful scribe, am chairpersonalong with my Co-chair Pat McGarvey, I can tell you every-thing there is to know about the day.

We will have a wonderful meal (I know, I chose it) alongwith amazing door prizes, and a very different sort of enter-tainment, that will also include cash prizes. You could gohome with more than it cost you to attend. The cost is $24.When you buy your ticket, you can arrange your own table.

A special thanks to Rita Harper, who again this year isunderwriting the day. Her donation makes for some veryspecial extras.

So join us ladies, Monday, December 10, 11:30 am at ElCamino Country Club. It’s an opportunity to dress up, drinkchampagne, win prizes and have a delicious lunch.

LIBRARY As anyone who has recently stopped by the

Library can see, we’ve really moved along withthe refurbishment. Our new couch—comfortable seating forthree plus—is now in place as are a few of our new tables andthe computer desk. The club chairs and side chairs lookclean and inviting in their fresh upholstery and the floorshines as it did when new. Still to come will be the paintingof the walls, the refinishing of countertops and the replace-ment of the soundproofing fabric on the sidewall. The gasfire logs are almost ready to go into our beautiful fireplace

and, hopefully, some new pictures and decorations will beadded.

We who work as librarians have watched the parts cometogether and we hope you’re watching too.

Another change for the coming year will be the discontin-uance of our library of CD books. Their cost is so high andcirculation so low that it has been decided to put those fundstoward the purchase of a greater number of books instead. For those who need to listen to books may we suggest aKindle, Nook or computer. The Public Library loans books onCDs to members and many of them have text to speech capa-bility and you don’t even have to pick them up. They comeright into your device.

We will continue loaning our CDs until the end of theyear and then we will put our collection of newest CDs up forsale at a later date.

By the way, the sale of books and CDs at the recent FleaMarket netted almost $500 for our Library.

New books continue to be donated to our Library by ourmembers and friends. Recent books received are:

The Real Romance (Bio) by Michael Kranish and ScottHelman

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L.James Fifty Shades Darker by E.L.James Fifty Shades of Freed by E.L.James These donated books can be found on the RESERVE

SHELF for Members only.

SEWING, ETCNovember 1, Thursday, the regular business

meeting. November 15, Thursday, a class titled“Gift Bag Creations.” Then for the second half of Novemberand all of December, Sewing, Etc., is DARK. The sewingroom is open and anyone is welcome to work on their proj-ects but there will not be formal meetings.

Don’t be fooled by the first Thursday being titled a“Business Meeting”— doesn’t that sound boring? It’s trueminutes and a Treasurer’s report are read but this is reallyShow and Tell, just like in school, and never boring!Completed projects from the last month’s classes are dis-played, examples of what we are making in this month’sclasses are shown and everyone brings projects they havebeen working on. October was fun, there were a couple ofgorgeous quilts, fabric covered plates from the Septemberclass, knitted boa-like scarves in all different colors and twopeople carried prior projects to new heights. In July wemade cupcake potholders and Marcia made at least 20 moreof them for her daughter; in August we made fleece capesand Lee brought in two and told us about a couple more —enough for a very cold winter. Ingrid had a pretty T-shirt.

Members are advised of changes in our events and sched-ules through emails. Another way to find out all things“Racquet Club,” is by checking our website athttp://www.ohccracquetclub.com/.

ROTATING DINNERThe Rotating Dinner scoreboard is #1 this

year with some wonderful dinner parties andhappy members. Thanks to all of you who participated ashosts…couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks also forbeing such appreciative guests.

We are once again recruiting members to take over as afull board. All positions will be open on January 1, 2013 soplease think about volunteering. We appreciate your offer tohelp at parties but without a board, there will be no parties. We’ve all been onboard, no pun intended, for five years andit is time for people with new ideas and energy to take over. The most common reason people do not come forth is “I amway too busy.” Guess what kids, so are we.

We meet once a month with our Treasurer zipping up themoneybag and Secretary recording our each and every word. The President arranges for hosts prior to this meeting. Afterguests and hosts are assigned to each other the VicePresident either e-mails or calls hosts to give them thenames of the people they will be entertaining. That is whenthe fun begins. If the hosts are able to arrange dates withtheir guests, everything is copasetic. If not, we begin givingout names of substitutes, hoping that everyone will be ableto attend a dinner that month. During the month, we may getcancellations and do our best to fill the slots at the lastminute.

When we plan parties at the club, which we try to do atleast twice a year, an invitation is sent to all members. Thisall sounds like a lot of work and I suppose it is, but still fun. This Club is affiliated with Ocean Hills and has a charter sothere are some rules but they are certainly not hard to fol-low. There are all kinds of suggestions from people that youmay or may not want to take but the board makes these deci-sions. Most suggestions have already been tried but a newboard may want to give it another go.

Looking forward to your call volunteering to serve on theboard of a bunch of hungry Rotating diners.

Hoping you all have a wonderful autumn full of leavesthat you do not have to rake! Bon Appetite!

She originally purchased one, then figured out how to makeit and brought both of them to show us. The technique isvery interesting (and I think easy) but impossible to explainso you will need to see it on the website (www.ohccsewing-club.com). I’m sure this is not all but I get so busy looking atthe projects that I forget to write them down.

The Fabric Covered Plate project, Session 1, was a realsuccess; there were birthday plates,Thanksgiving plates andplates that matched dinnerware. The procedure underwentrefinements and now can be completed in just one class sothere will be more plates to see at the November meetingfrom Session 2.

VILLAGE TAPPERS ANDHAWAIIAN DANCE CLUB

Our June show, “Footloose and Fancy Free in OceanHills” was a huge success. We received so many wonderfulcomments and compliments on the show, the dances, and, ofcourse, the costumes. One person even came up to me andsaid, “This is the best show ever.”

Since we love to dance, we decided to do two more shows.First, we went down the street to St.Thomas More, where wereceived rave reviews again.

Then one of our members, Connie Perkins, thought itwould be a good idea for us to give back to the communityby doing a benefit. Our board decided to give half of our pro-ceeds to CERT and the other half to OHSPA. So we dustedoff our costumes again and performed on Sunday, October 7to almost 175 people. Some of our audience were first timersbecause they missed the show in June. Others wanted to seeit a second time. We even invited some people from Aegisand Pacifica. We raised over $1,000!

We had the support of so many people - our teacher, cho-reographer, and director, Ellie Oakley, who has choreo-graphed all the shows for the past 18 years; the AV staff whodid an outstanding job: Ed Farley, Ron Stogdill, Cathy King,Janice Hart, and Doug Wright; and Bill and Joanne Harmsfor music and video. Our support backstage shouldn’t beignored either. Thank you Charline Kenney, Mary EllenBacon, and Lynn Pentel.

We want to thank you for your continued support, and weare looking forward to our next big show.

VILLAGE VETSDo you know the history of Veteran’s Day?

Here is a brief summation.Veterans Day, former-ly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legalholiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially tookplace on November 11, 1918. In 1938, legislation was passedand November 11 was “dedicated” to the cause of worldpeace, was hereafter called Armistice Day, and honoredWorld War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through World War II and theKorean War, Congress—at the urging of the veterans serviceorganizations—amended the 1938 act by striking out theword “Armistice” and inserting “Veterans.” The legislatorsapproved this on June 1, 1954 and November 11 became aday to honor American veterans of all wars.

That is exactly what we are doing in Ocean Hills onSunday, November 11, 2012 in Abravanel Hall at 2 pm…hon-oring all of our American veterans. Doors will open at 1:30pm and the program will be around 60+ minutes withrefreshments served by our Recreation Department afterthe completion of the program.

We have a full program complete with the Rancho BuenaVista High School Orchestra and a very special guest speak-er who survived the Bataan Death March in WW II as well asbeing a POW in Japan. We have many Veterans in ourVillage. Let us show our appreciation for their willingness tosacrifice their lives to give us freedom and peace. Need aride or help getting to the Hall on Veteran’s Day? Call DonnaRussell 760-945-5558 and arrangements will be made.

WALKERS/HIKERS CLUB Our Walker/Hikers worked up their appetites

by hiking one mile around Lake Poway before sit-ting down to their Annual October Picnic Lunch. Manythanks to our BBQ Chefs who were in charge of flipping thehamburgers and veggie burgers. Many delicious potluckdishes accompanied these great burgers.

A business meeting was called to order after lunch.Nominations for next year’s officers were held. All previousboard members will be returning and will serve under thevery capable leadership of our new president, Jack Shabel.

Fifteen Hikers enjoyed a 3-day trip to Julian on October16, 17, and 18. Hikes to a gold mining site and also a real goldmine were featured. And, of course, everyone had to experi-ence the famous Julian Apple Pies. Kudos to Dee McGuirewho helped with organizing this memorable trip.
