I hope that the cold and flu season passed you by and that you are enjoying a healthy start to the year. The Staff furiously sorted, stuffed and delivered a bevy of corre-spondences to your door in January and we appreciate the quick response as always from the Residents. The first day of the decal process was busy as we had approx-imately 200 vehicles registered. Likewise, the ballots for the CC&R’s are quickly being returned too!
A new request for single rider carts owners to provide doctors certification was added to the decal process this year. We will check the files to see if your original certifi-cation is still on file. Over time, we often discover the doc-ument is no longer in the file. However, in the meantime, your decal will be issued and we can follow up with you after the fact if we need the documentation. Thanks for your patience and for the feedback.
We want to again say thanks to all the volunteers who accomplished so much this year for the Community and welcome all the new applicants who will begin their next year of service. I am so grateful that we never lack for helping hands when it comes time to roll up your sleeves and get the work done. The new Committees will have their orientation this month and begin setting a list of priorities to submit to the Board by April.
I have just sent out a separate update on the Abrava-nel Hall work and the Pool Project. Great progress is be-ing made on both projects. The process on the Hall is go-ing smoothly so far and may even be available in time for the ballot count of the CC&R’s vote. We will keep you posted. I want to thank the Staff and the Residents for their cooperative attitude during all the work and cre-ative ways of keeping the fun rolling along. I was watch-ing a recent exercise class in the galleria last week and I thought it gave such a great vibe to the energy of this Community to see so many graceful swaying participants enjoying themselves in unison! It is going to be exciting to open up the newly renovated areas to let all your ener-gy loose again soon!

Hi, Everybody! February, the month for lovers! Prac-tice this month, see how much enjoyment you will receive back---be kind, be nice, be a friend!!!
Our two big projects continue, as expected. The Pool project has had some delays with the rain in January, but we are making progress. One very interesting dis-covery, as the workers were excavating the trench for the drain around the Clubhouse---at the corner by the Music Room, down about 4 or 5 feet, a running stream, heading straight for the Clubhouse! The engineer is making sure our new drain will pick up all this flow, and send it away, where it belongs!!!
And in Abravanel Hall, things are going well. All that nasty “wall carpet” is gone, the walls are getting fixed and primed, and soon will start looking good!
So, let’s review the actions taken at our January Board meeting, on January 12 and 16:
We approved the minutes of the December 15/18 Reg-ular Session Board meeting.
Then we heard the final report from the CC&R Ad Hoc Committee. Don Lopez, VP, explained the final few steps being taken prior to the mail-out of the Ballots, and en-couraged all Members to please review your Ballot infor-mation carefully, and please VOTE!
Next there was discussion on the proposed rule change for use of single rider motorized carts on our Golf Course. After review of comments from two homeowners, as well as feedback from legal counsel, the rules changes were tabled, pending further review.
On Friday, after Staff and Annual Summary Commit-tee reports, the Board approved a recommendation from the Landscape Committee to address re-landscaping of an area on Leisure Village Way by Delos Way. Due to the specific drainage issues in this area, nothing will grow there, so the Landscape Committee recommended in-stalling an area of river rock and boulders. Irrigation in this area will be capped off.
Next the Board approved appointments to Standing Committees for 2015.Thank you to all who volunteer to help the Board with your service on these Committees. The complete list of Committee Members is published in this Newsletter.
Finally, the Board approved a resolution regarding use of Master Association assessments to purchase and sup-ply irrigation water for use in maintaining landscape ar-eas that are the responsibility of the Village Sub-Associ-ations. In a nutshell, the Master Association and each of the eight Villages have agreed that, beginning with the next budget cycle, the Villages will no longer budget for water as part of their expenses, and all water will be bud-geted by the Master Association. This will simplify a cur-rent complex administrative process, and will have mini-mal financial impact on individual homeowners.
On Thursday, January 15, the Board met in Execu-tive Session. Items discussed were: Personnel, Third Par-ty Contracts, Delinquency Review, Member Disciplinary Action, Executive Committee Reports, and approval of prior Executive Session Minutes. Contracts approved at that meeting were:
Two change orders in connection with the Pool Deck and Palm Court repair: One in an amount of $2157 to add a small amount of concrete at the Golf Casa, and one in an amount of $2918 to demolish two of the free-stand-ing walls in front of the Clubhouse, in order to allow the French drain trench to be excavated.
Two contracts with Morningstar Productions: One in an amount not to exceed $7308, to clean up all the ca-bling in the A/V Booth and one in an amount not to ex-ceed $2374, to upgrade the control system for our wire-less microphones, in order to eliminate signal dropout and lack of range.
The Board also approved payment to the City of Oceanside in an amount of $1500, as a refundable guar-antee related to our landscape plan check, and another payment in the amount of $2844 to cover processing fees

to complete the Landscape Plan Check approval process.I’d also like to bring you up to date on a couple of oth-
er items that haven’t yet been addressed. In the Execu-tive Session on December 15, the Board reviewed legal advice related to allowing access through the Shadow-ridge entry for non-residents. Based on that advice, the Board decided to take no action on this subject. Non-res-idents will have to use the Cannon Road visitor entry, as they do now.
Also, on December 18, the Board met in an Emergen-cy Executive Session, to discuss third party contracts. No contracts were approved at that meeting.
And on December 29, the Board met in Executive Ses-sion to review legal opinions. As a result of this meet-ing, the Board approved the final version of the restated CC&Rs and Bylaws.
And about the CC&R Ballot. I have been informed that some Members have received incorrect packages for the election, some are missing ballots, some have re-ceived duplicate Ballots. I apologize for this. Please con-
tact the HOA with any questions related to your ballots, and they will resolve the situation.
And more about the CC&R Ballot. I’m just asking that you look carefully at the paperwork, ask questions if you have them, and come to your own decision. Please VOTE. Don’t leave the decision-making process to others, take part in it. It’s important.
Thank you, and have a LOVELY February!!!!

Landscape CommitteeBy Linda Wass and Debbie McCain, IPM Subcommittee
2014 Summary Report During 2014, the Landscape Committee made sever-
al recommendations to the Master Board. They were: a request for Van Dyke Landscape Architects to pro-vide drawings for the complete re-design of the HOA Of-fice and back gate landscape. That has been completed and the work is on hold pending budget considerations. The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) report is com-plete and will be presented at the February meeting. The Charter was revised and approved. Due to the continued drought conditions, the Committee has started evaluat-ing possible areas for turf reduction. Additionally, the Committee, on a monthly basis, examines all tree mainte-nance requests submitted by Homeowners. In 2014 a to-tal of 76 trees were inspected, 28 required pruning, 4 had to be removed, and 44 needed no action.
Emergency MonitoringSystems (EMS) Telephone Compatibility
Changes to your telephone service may affect your EMS’s ability to communicate with the Front Gate. AT&T’s U-Verse Voice is the predominate provider uti-lizing Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Other tele-phone services providers that may offer VOIP are: Cox VOIP, Magic Jack, Vonage, Verizon VOIP. They will all ne-gate your EMS’s ability to communicate with the Front Gate.
AT&T’s U-Verse offers telephone service via the Inter-net, and does not require a land line. While providers uti-lizing VOIP may provide the fastest Internet service, they do not provide the necessary clarity on the line for your EMS to operate.
Bi-monthly walkthroughs were implemented in 2014 and helped the Committee, the Landscape Director, O’Connell, and staff to work more closely on specific ar-eas of concern. Several sections were identified as need-ing corrective action. Water runoff, especially along Lei-sure Village Way, was considered excessive and steps have been taken to replace all the existing sprinkler heads on Leisure Village way with ones that prevent runoff and back flow. An area at the Delos and LVW intersection was staying wet most of the time. Several different plant types were tried and found to be unacceptable. It was de-cided to replace the plantings with river rock and boul-ders. This was approved by the Master Board in January.
As we begin the New Year, the Committee will contin-ue to monitor our common areas. The “Trimming Guide-lines” will be reviewed and turf removal continues to be a high priority.
Returning Committee Members for 2015 are: Betty Theel, Linda Wass, Sylvia Carson and Margaret Forman. New Members include: Else Offerson, Elaine Kowalik and Roger Brown.
Thank you to those members who served last year but chose not to return, Chairman, Alma Sysco-Smith, Debbie McCain and Norm Shute. Your input was invaluable and you will be missed.

Safety CornerBy Leonard Weinstein,Director of Community Patrol Service (CPS)
Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
Having been asked to once again address individual safety when walking in our community at dusk or later, I wondered what the greater concern was. Is it driver safe-ty or pedestrian safety? While each of us shares responsi-bility and both can be injured, that two-eyed, three thou-sand pound monster (the vehicle) is definitely the one to watch. As pedestrians, we should ensure our safety as much as possible. Wear light-colored clothing; reflective material is even better. A hand-held or headband flash-light is great. If you’re walking the “family member”, re-flective items are equally great, i.e., a leash, collar, K-9 jacket. Please walk where the monster’s driver expects you to be – in the pedestrian lane. As drivers, we must be extremely vigilant. Regardless of where a pedestrian may be, our two-eyed monster can cause great injury or worse. Please, let’s all work together to ensure our mu-tual safety.
The OHCC annual information and decaling project is almost complete; it ends on Friday, February 6th at 5:00 P.M. Did you remember to drive your vehicle(s) to the in-
tersection of Cannon Road and Leisure Village Drive to complete this process? There’s still time; your Communi-ty Patrol Service officers are available to assist you with this process.
It’s been some time since I mentioned our mutually working together for the safety and wellbeing of all. If you see anything that is of concern, please contact your Community Patrol Service at the front gate, 760-758-7111. Is a neighbor’s mail and/or newspapers piling up, have you not seen a neighbor in a while that you normally see regularly, do you see an open door(s) at a home with no one in evidence, are there strangers in the area that “just don’t seem right”, is someone driving in an unsafe manner, etc. Better to report it than ignore it. The one missed call verses the greater number of “we just want-ed to be sure” calls that results in injury or property loss is the one we should have received. Please be proactive.
Home Preparedness Tip: Store your home’s disaster supply kit in an accessible location. Take it with you if you evacuate.
SHOULD YOU NEED ASSISTANCE, THE FRONT GATE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS (760) 758-7111. PLEASE INPUT YOUR GUESTS IN THE DWELL-INGLIVE SYSTEM SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO WAIT AT THE GATE WHILE WE CALL YOU.
Be SAFE, Be SMART, and most of all, BE HAPPY. Once again, thanks for your time and thanks for reading The Safety Corner.

This month appears to somewhat quiet, the renova-tions have cut back on the regular activities and figur-ing out what to post on the Front Page has been a bit of a challenge. Abravanel Hall’s renovation continues and the progress is apparent if one stops by and sees how the projects are moving forward. Again, we are having some-what of a letdown after all the activity in 2014. All in all, the areas we have been given to work are being utilized and people are accommodating the limitations.
The 2015 directories have arrived and they can be picked up at the Front Desk of the Clubhouse, one copy per household. The annual golf bag tags are available, the color is neon pink and there is no cost. Be prepared to sign the back of the tag acknowledging the rules and regulations for the course. Any resident golfer that uses the course must have a current bag tag on their golf bag.
Guests must be accompanied by a resident. Please join the Recreation Department on Friday, Feb-
ruary 20 at 3 pm for a Mimosa, Music and More Social. It will be quite informal but a chance for people to come down and see their neighbors, watch the renovations and just be a part of the progress.
Louise Ries, our Event Coordinator has included in her article most of February’s happenings. Clubs and individuals continue to make adjustments to their con-firmed reservations. The Mall Trips continue to be popu-lar, the bus schedule is online at www.oceanhillscountry-club.com. The classes continue to be successful because so many residents volunteer their time to head a group that they have experience with. The most recent class to join on is stained glass. If anyone has the desire to host a class, we will start an interest group list which will help get the class started. We provide the publicity, the fly-ers and the sign-ups, just let us know and we will put the wheels in motion.
There is one staff opening in facilities and we are re-viewing applicants at this time. Angel Munoz accepted a full-time job during the day and we wish him well in his new pursuits, he is keeping a seasonal status to help out if needed.
Happy Valentine’s Day, it is always a great day to reach out to someone, a neighbor, a friend, and yes, a wife...don’t forget!

BALLROOM DANCE CLUBHere it is, February, and we should still be in the midst of construction in Abravanel
Hall and we are all getting very anxious for the day we can resume our normal dance lives. If you’re not joining us at our Monday and Wednesday session, we hope that all of you are getting your dancing in at other venues.
Do Dues Day was great - we had 43 brand new members join the Club. As of this writing, we have 208 club members - ahead of the pace for last year.
The February Dance is cancelled: Due to the renovations in Abravanel Hall, our February Friday dance is cancelled. Also, because the Hall renovations extend into early March, the March dance is re-scheduled to Friday, March 20.
Wednesday Beginner/Intermediate Dance Lessons (free): At our first Wednesday session in
January, we had close to 50 people attend but we managed to make do in the Mykonos Room. George and Miriam Mozes got us started in the Rumba which continued through January when lessons in the ChaCha will begin. Single persons are welcome as we encourage our experienced dancers to attend and interact with participants. Lessons are open to all residents and, for February, lessons will be in the Mykonos Room as follows: February 4, 11, 18, and 25: Beginners at 2:30 pm and Intermediate dancers at 3:15 pm. Members are notified by e-mail of any changes to the schedule.
Monday Dance Lessons and Workshops: These lessons and workshops are every Monday and open to all OHCC residents. Sessions give participants a chance to learn new dances and/or advanced levels in core dances. We’ll generally alternate between professional instruction (attendees pay a small fee per lesson) for a number of weeks and then in-house directed review workshops (no cost). In early December, we concluded our (paid) professional instruction in the Night Club Two-Step. At this time, no professional instruction is planned so we will continue with (no cost) review sessions. Classes will

BILLIARDS CLUBThe Billiards Club had 50 new members join on Do Dues Day. It is exciting that
so many will begin experiencing and learning many pool games. They will be receiving lessons throughout the year to help them learn and improve their game. Of course, those familiar with playing pool will also benefit from these lessons.
We had a great turnout of at least 30 new members for our Open House on January 8. They learned all about the Billiard Room, the Billiard Club, the many things available throughout the year, and were given demonstrations of the most popular pool games. The Basic Lessons began on January 14 with three more being given before the first tournament of the year (Beginners 8-Ball) on February 26.
On January 28, there was a presentation by John
“Sidewinder” Webber on trick shots. People were amazed at the many peculiar ways a pool shot can be made.
Many more lessons and tournaments are scheduled throughout the year, along with a seminar from professional pool player Calvin Coker. If you are not a member, come into the pool room to see how much players enjoy the game. Hopefully, you will be enticed to play billiards and join our Club.
BIRDWATCHERS CLUBNo meeting this month, but mark your calendars for March 27 at 1 pm in the
Ladies Club Room. We will have a wonderful video presentation exploring bird flight. Not sure if the Birdwatchers Club is for you? Come to a meeting or on one of our walks to try us out. Join at any time by leaving a check in the Birdwatchers envelope at the Front Desk. Dues are $8. Please call Joan Comito at 760-940-8513 if you have any questions.
The bird walk this month will be to Lake Wohlford in Escondido on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10. Meet

at the overflow lot by 7:45 am to receive directions and form carpools. DEPARTURE IS 8 am. Always wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick if you use one. Also bring water, hat, binoculars, and a few bucks to help out the driver. We will have a pair of binoculars for loan. The trail is flat, but unshaded and a portable toilet is available. The trail runs alongside the lake at a higher level so we can see into the trees more easily. We hope to see a variety of winter ducks, Mergansers, various raptors (possible Bald eagle), Osprey, and smaller wintering birds in the forest areas. After the walk, we will have lunch at Smokey’s Lake Wohlford Café, home of the famous all-you-can-eat catfish dinner.
Lake Wohlford was Escondido’s first reservoir, with the dam, completed in 1895. While the 190-acre lake was originally called the Bear Valley Reservoir, the name was changed in 1924 to honor Alvin Wohlford who died that year. Wohlford was an engineer who created the water supply system that resulted in the canal and lake. Rental boats are available for fishing, but private boats are currently banned due to the influx of invasive Quagga mussels. The Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, largemouth bass and catfish, while black crappie and bluegill are also caught here. Dogs are not permitted.

fun-filled evening of bridge and snacks. While Abravanel Hall is being renovated, we will be in the Mykonos Room. Bring a partner and ante up $1 each towards the prize pool. What we don’t give away in prize money pays for our cookies and coffee. We’re a friendly bunch and welcome all intermediate players. Bridge begins promptly at 6:30 pm.
December winners were Lois Chant and Jackie Cohen, Ron and Jackie Torgerson and Dorothy Skibel and June Barmasse. If you missed us at Do Dues Day, join us any Thursday, and bring $6 for annual dues.
can-Do clUB Our big mission for spring is OH! Follies ‘15, where we raise the funds to make
improvements to our community. In the past two years we have made sizeable contributions to CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) for supplies and to OHSPA (The Ocean Hills Society for the Performing Arts) to help underwrite their concerts. Last year we contributed to the automation of the doors leading to the Palm Court and Pool area, increasing accessibility for our neighbors and selves.
This year’s project? We hope to get approval for automating the entrances to the restrooms, which completes our focus on accessibility. (FYI: We are the Club that raised the funds to automate the huge front doors of our Clubhouse a few years ago. Prior to then, we had to physically pull them open, a challenge for many.)
But we can’t do it without your help. Ticket Sales
In addition to buying regular tickets to OH! Follies (our annual talent show), this year we once again offer Advanced Sale Golden Tickets. Those making a minimum donation of $200 per ticket will get first selection of seats, beginning on February 1. Ticket buyers donating a minimum of $50 per ticket will select their seats next, beginning on February 15.
Regular ticket sales begin on Monday, March 9, at 10 am. Regular tickets are $15.
If you wish to make a donation to underwrite any aspects of the production, please call Kate Butler at 760-295-9865, or send an email to [email protected]. She has incentives for all donors.
What Is Follies?Quite simply: Follies is the only opportunity for
everyone on campus to get onstage and strut their stuff each year. No Club membership is required, and we hold only three rehearsals and perform one show. Talent works on their act in their own time, with help from the Director as requested. The only requirement is a desire to entertain. There are no auditions and the OH! Follies has always been entertaining and well-received. It is an original, world-premiere musical show written this year by Don Sanelli.
Saturday, March 28 is the date of this year’s Follies.

See the week’s movie program published every Thursday or call the Movie Hotline 760-758-1216, Ext 5 for more details. choral societYWe are so excited…it is time to start singing again! We had a wonderful showing
on “Do Dues Day.” Thank you to all our returning members and new friends who have decided to join us. We especially thank our generous patrons. Our Holiday Concert would have been a sell-out (if we charged LOL) and there were so many gracious comments that were appreciated by all of us. Thank you for your generosity with our annual holiday raffle. This allows us to have “uniforms,” “rhythm instruments” and really helps with the music. We will be practicing for our May Concert on May 17 but we are not really sure yet of the songs or the theme because director Donna is keeping mum…that makes it even more enticing!

GarDen clUBHappy Birthday to the Garden Club, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year!
Members and guests kicked off the holiday season with the first Tour of Homes in December, excellently chaired by Sylvia Carson. This event showcased six lavishly decorated homes and gardens. Guests were greeted by club volunteers and the following Homeowners: Valerie and Jay Farrar; Dwight Goldblatt; Sandy and Bill Jones; Norma Orseth; Marian Reed; Kay and Willy Sernesi. Gracious homeowners shared the history of their holiday decorations and served guests refreshments, including hot apple cider, champagne, cookies and candy. We look forward to making this an annual holiday event.
Following the garden tour, guests enjoyed a delicious Asian luncheon, catered by Thai One On, planned and organized by Lisa Cerqua and Alma-Sisco Smith. Husbands, Bob and Patrick, helped to serve the food - enhancing the day with their smiles and good cheer.
There will be no general meetings in February. Meetings will resume in March in our remodeled Clubhouse. Thanks to Board members for their service this past year. Welcome and congratulations to the 2015 new Board.
Upcoming Garden Club Events• The first tour of the New Year will take place in
February, a tour of the San Diego Botanical Garden in Encinitas. Their president, Julian Duval, was the guest speaker at our October meeting.
• Wednesday, March 18: “Attracting Hummingbirds and Butterflies to Your Garden” will be presented by Marcia Van Loy, San Diego Master
Gardener Association. Discover the joy of growing a bird, hummingbird and butterfly friendly garden.
• In April, we are making plans to attend the Art Alive event at the San Diego Museum of Art, which we last visited in 2012.
The Garden Club invites you to come join us at our general meetings, tours, and special events.
GarDeninG news by melvina terryWhat do all the numbers on fertilizers mean? A
simplistic answer is for you to think of a way a plant grows. It starts with a seed, sends up a sprout and leaves so the first number is for nitrogen and is good for the “green” and thus good for the root system, stem and leaves. The plant then produces flowers so the second number is for phosphorus and is good for producing flowers. The last number is for potash and is good for the overall wellbeing of the plant.
Our soil is alkaline and therefore would benefit from acid type fertilizers. Miracle Gro is highly alkaline so, although highly advertised, may not be the best. Our soil could do better with Mur-acid.
Rules for fertilizing are: Never feed a dry plant; Limit the amount of nitrogen applied at any one time since it can burn roots and leaves; feed at less than the recommended rate until you learn your plant’s responses and if plants have not responded in two weeks with fresh new growth, feed again.
My favorite in between fertilizers are fish emulsion or chicken fertilizer.

The Guys and Dolls season begins on Sunday, February 8. The second tournament of the year is on Saturday, March 28.
Touring Amateurs resumes on Monday, March 23 at the Oaks North Course. I’m excited. Aren’t you?
THE NEWSThis just in from Joe Newmyer:“The 14th Annual Herb Stark Men’s Match Play
Tournament for 2015 will begin the week of March 16. The cost to enter the tournament will be $5 per person. Signups will begin on February 23 and end at noon on March 10. Place your $5 in an envelope with your name and phone number and deposit it in the Casa door.
This year the tournament committee will evaluate the handicaps of each player and will adjust any handicap that it is believed does not reflect the ability of the player. As they did last year, the players will schedule their own matches with each player playing at least one match per week.
Depending on the number of participants, the tournament will last four or five weeks. Joe Newmyer will be in charge of the tournament with expert help from Tom Vetlesen.”

liBrarYThank you so much to all residents who
renewed or joined the Library for the first time. We appreciate it so much.
We’re sure most of you know that the Library is self sustaining. Not one red cent of your homeowners’ fees goes toward purchasing books. It’s our members who keep us going and, therefore, determine how many new books we are able to purchase each month. So, if you haven’t already joined, please do so now. You can leave your check with a librarian when the Library is open or at the Front Desk.
On Do Dues Day we overheard one resident make the comment that if you join the Library you will be expected to work in it. To the contrary, the Library already has a long list of people who want to work and, often it can take more than a year to get to the top of the list.
Again, a happy, HEALTHY and prosperous New Year.

nuBeesHappy New Year to new and returning NuBees! May we all enjoy a year of health
and joy, filled with light, love and friendship! One of the best ways to fill in the friendship piece
is to come to our NuBee’s gatherings on the third (3rd) Monday evening of each month. We meet from 5:30 pm to about 7:30 pm.
Our calendar and meeting location for the 2015 is:
We ask that you bring a hearty appetizer or other dish you like to prepare or eat (hot or cold) for 10-12 people and your own beverage to share with your neighbors and friends. Water, ice, flatware, plates, napkins and cups will be provided. We will also have sign-up sheets there to give everyone an opportunity
to help out by guest-hosting one month. Our guest-hosts will be asked to bring a dessert that will accommodate 10-12 people. We have a core group of regular volunteers, Holly Radziwon and Bill Vogel. We also ask for a small monthly donation to cover the expense of our paper goods. Bring a friend or a new neighbor. Make sure that we have your correct email. If you have a new email, or you are interested in receiving our email notices, come to our next NuBee’s gathering or call me (Jean Hefler 760-724-8108) and we will make sure that you are on our list.
Throughout the year there are other NuBee sponsored activities that are great to participate in and we will be looking for some help in getting those organized.
Please come and join us whether you are a “new NuBee” or a “not so new” NuBee. We are looking forward to seeing you and meeting you in the new year.

ohsPaTHANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The time is getting close for the
first OHSPA concert of the year and it is sure to be a sellout! The Texas Tenors will be performing in Abravanel Hall on March 7 at 7:30 pm. This will be the first show in the newly renovated Abravanel Hall and we are all anxious to see the final changes. If the first day of ticket sales is any indication and all the telephone calls we are receiving, we are sure to have a sellout performance. Please check with the Front Desk to see what tickets and seats are available. If there are no tickets left, put your name on the waiting list. We usually have last minute tickets available due to unforeseen circumstances of our residents. Tickets are $30 each and heavily subsidized by OHSPA. This dynamic trio, complete with live backup music, will give you an evening you will remember for a long time. Remember, they were finalists for “America’s Got Talent” and they have been traveling all over the United States as well as in many countries. They are now booked in Branson for 4 months out of the year and are the No. 1 show on the “must see” list. They are so personable and ladies, they are “nice to look at as well.” They will entertain you with their unique blend of Country, Gospel, Classical and Broadway as well as breathtaking vocals, humor and cowboy charm. We promise that you will be smiling throughout the entire concert! It was not easy to get them here and we at OHSPA are still thinking how lucky we are to have them coming to our Abravanel Hall in Ocean Hills Country Club!
We thank all of our Star Donors and Patrons for their generous donations and to all of you who purchased tickets. You are KEEPING OHSPA ALIVE!
Our second show of the season is May 9 and tickets will go on sale on March 31 at 8 am in the Galleria. The Kingston Trio will bring you to your feet with their famous songs of the times. This promises to be a top notch entertainment show, with the music that only they can bring to life! This is another top-flight show from OHSPA subsidized for only $30 a ticket. Unless you are a Star Donor (and it is not too late to become a Star Donor), get in line early on the March 31 to get your Kingston Trio tickets!
PET LOVERS CLUB We had a very successful enrollment on Do Dues Day. As of January 6 we had 166
members which include 28 new members. If you missed Do Dues Day, you can always drop a check off at the Front Desk. It is $6 for an individual and $10 for a family.
The August Brunch will be Saturday, August 1. We are working on a joint meeting with the Village Vets in the spring. We had a very successful joint meeting with the Village Vets last year presenting the Freedom Dogs.
There have been sightings of Coyotes and a sighting of a Bobcat around the Village of
Zante. We advise Pet owners to not let their pets roam around outside without supervision.
Please be considerate of your fellow residents and pick-up after your dog(s) when you are walking the Village or in the Dog Park.
Remember our Wounded Warriors by making a donation to FREEDOM DOGS. Call Sunny Frowein at 760.630.6304 for information. Also, Gina Dillon volunteers for the S.D. Humane Society. Call Gina at 760-505-8637 for information on items that are needed.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUBFOUNDERS DAY — We will be honoring
our first Photography Club president, Fred O’Hara. Viewing his photos from 30 years ago should be a pleasure and a great reminisce.
Our general meeting will be a teaching and learning experience. Ernie Pick, who has taught photography the world over, will be asking our fellow photographers to bring in questions on actual photos they have taken to see what our knowledgeable members could recommend as improvements. Please bring the photos for all to see.
We also would like an exchange of ideas by asking general questions about the techniques of good photography. We are looking forward to tapping into the expertise that abounds in our membership.
Also, if you have a new camera, please bring it to share with others.
We hope you come armed with photos and questions. See you February 19 at 1 pm in the Ladies Club Room.
Following the meeting Bud will be available in the Computer Lab from 3 to 5 pm to help with camera/computer questions or the use of the scanner and printer. If you have questions on Photoshop Elements or Picasa, he will attempt to address them also.

RACQUET CLUB Do Dues Day is always a fun event – saying hello to all of our current members
and meeting new residents and members as well! We had a great group of members manning our table, accepting checks, refreshing memories of our meetings, scheduled drop-in days and times, and telling new members of all of our sports and activities. Renewing members numbered 220 and brand new members numbered 30! We were careful to find out what each renewing member and new member played, or planned to play this coming year! Among the 30 new members, 26 were interested in playing pickleball! We distributed our new calendar of events for 2015 including events in tennis, paddle tennis, pickleball, table tennis, and water volleyball–even though some dates may be changed later. With the Clubhouse renovation in progress, rooms and court usage are ever changing. Most noticeable is that we have lost usage of pickleball/paddle tennis court #3 behind the Clubhouse, and that courts 1 and 2 are tedious to get to and quite noisy, as they are now in the middle of the construction zone. During this construction period, we have opted to use tennis court #3 for four pickleball courts from 10 am on, on all days except Thursdays where pickleball starts there at noon. Also, table tennis play in the Mykonos Room has been affected as Abravanel Hall undergoes a renovation. As Bette Davis said, “fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night”…or several months in our case. We will all need a little patience, but we know that everything will be worth it–and we’ll have a beautiful OHCC when it’s complete!
Members can look forward to our first tennis event on April 11, paddle tennis on July 21, pickleball tournament on March 19, pickleball and table tennis lessons, badminton starting again in late spring, and water volleyball when the pool is ready. All this and more will be announced in emails to our members!
If you didn’t renew your membership in the Racquet Club at Do Dues Day, just drop your check for $10 per membership into the RC check envelope at the Front Desk. Be sure to include any pertinent information if anything has changed since you last joined up. That way you can continue to get our emails advising of “everything Racquet Club” including any sudden changes to our meetings and drop-in schedule. We ask that new members complete an application with their check, available in the Racquet Club folder or RC wall pocket near the Front Desk. Remember, you can’t participate in our tournaments if you’re not a member…so why not

SAILING CLUBAt its January meeting, new officers were installed for 2015. Allan Paloutzian,
our Commodore, Bob Kopolow, Vice-Commodore, Forrest Newburg, Fleet Captain and Evy Sanfilippo, Treasurer, are continuing in their former positions. Sally Booth is the new Secretary, replacing the retiring Bill Smith. During the meeting, Commodore Paloutzian reviewed the Sailing Club’s membership and activities for 2014. The club finished the year with 248 members, a new record, 84 of whom were new. The club went on 21 day sails during the year. The Captain who took out the most boats was Vice Commodore Bob Kopolow, who sailed 7 boats. First Mate Kez Dovydaitis and Fleet Captain Forrest

Newburg each were on 6 sails, while Club member Debbie Vail was crew on 6 sails. In addition to the day sails, 87 sailors participated in the whale watching trip in March, 51 sailed on the tall ship Spirit of Dana Point in July, and 33 participated in the trip to Catalina in October. We also filled the Lanai with 158 revelers in July for our summer party. With so much going on, it’s no surprise membership is increasing! There is a full menu of activities being planned for 2015, including the Club Regatta, a Whale Watch excursion, a sailing for the San Salvador launch, a sail viewing of a concert at the Embarcadero, a visit to the USS Midway Museum and a ride on a hovercraft. Come to our meetings to get the latest information on, and sign up for, all these activities.
While the pace of activities is slower in the winter, there are still opportunities for day sails. The best way to get on the list to sail is to sign up at the monthly meetings. If you miss the meeting, check either the Club website or the Sailing Club folder at the Clubhouse Front Desk to see which captain is taking out a boat, and on which date. The Sailing Club website contains a link that informs
users about future sails and allows you to sign up or add your name to the waiting list. If the boat is not full, add your name to the list and put a check for $45 in the check envelope at the Clubhouse Front Desk to be added to the sail. Priority goes to those who place their checks in the Sailing Club envelope earliest.
See us at our next meeting on February 3 to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks, and to sign up for upcoming sails. Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the business meeting begins at 7:30 pm. And don’t forget your checkbooks and nametags.
SENIOR FITNESS CLUBThe Senior Fitness Club meets Tuesdays at 1 pm and Thursdays at 11 am in Abravanel
Hall. The annual dues are $5 and the class fee is $3 per class.
The classes consist of low-impact exercise, including balance and coordination, flexibility and range of motion, stretching and strengthening. Come on down and join us!

first meeting of the month is always our Members meeting but this year the first Thursday was New Year’s Day so when I wrote the newsletter, which was done the end of November, I just moved the meeting forward a week. Unfortunately the second
Thursday of the month is never an official meeting because of a scheduling conflict so our first meeting of 2015 was held on January 15. My apologies to anyone who came January 8 and found the room empty. Hopefully you did not give up and returned for coffee and cookies at the REAL meeting January 15.
For February our Members Meeting on the 5th will have interesting items for Show and Tell. The January projects included a thread catcher like those we are currently using in the sewing room and an apron make from a men’s shirt. We should see some of them displayed at the February meeting. New projects for February include a duffle bag and the first of the Santa stockings workshops. Marcia has been telling us about the stockings workshop for months; finally we will be able to see exactly what we are going to be making. The stockings are a donation project like the baby quilts and we will have a couple of workshops throughout the year.
If you did not get to the January meeting you can go on line at www.ohccsewingclub.com to see what we have been doing.

holiday party at Belle Fleur on December 4 with great food and wonderful raffle items. We also installed the new officers: Joanne Greene for President; Hanna Distel, Vice-President; Treasurer, Brooks Westwater; Secretary, Estelle Altork.
The construction team is hard at work on the Palm Court and all the concrete surrounding the pool and spa. No new dates for opening yet.
Meetings for 2015 will be held in April, June, August and October. There will be two parties in 2015, one on July 18 on the Lanai and the other will be December 6. Take a look at the new website for our Swim Club. Joanne Green did a great job designing it. We hope you signed up on Do Dues Day for your Swim Club membership.
Have a very healthy and happy New Year.
THEATRE ARTSTheatre Arts welcomes back our returning members, plus all of our new members.
If you have not yet paid your dues, please drop off your $10 check at the Front Desk. We plan to make 2015 a banner year!
We encourage you to attend our PlayReaders group. We meet the first Wednesday of the month in the Art Room at 1 pm and usually stay about 2 1/2 to 3 hours, reading plays of many different genres. It is a very enjoyable activity! Thanks to Steve McConnell for organizing and leading us.
With Abravanel Hall under construction and limiting our ability to bring in entertainment, we are planning a Theatre Party for Sunday, February 22. We will meet at 11:30 am at the overflow parking lot and carpool to the AVO Theater in Vista to see SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM at 2 pm. We will have lunch first at the Vista Village Pub; they will offer us both a breakfast and lunch menu. The website describes the play as such:
“Experience the story, the inspiration and the genius of Stephen Sondheim in Sondheim on Sondheim. This revelatory revue, produced for the first time in San Diego, offers an intimate portrait of the famed composer in his own words...and music. Through the use of interspersed interview footage, you will get an inside look at Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process that has remained largely undiscussed by the man himself, until now. Sondheim on Sondheim features two dozen carefully selected songs that form a massive theatrical potency, from the beloved to the
Clubs and Activities
obscure. Sondheim’s story, inspiration and genius is celebrated in the San Diego premiere of this newly created revue by James Lapine with new arrangements by David Loud.”
The tickets are $30 each; if we sell 20 or more, we will each get $3 returned. If you would like to go, please contact Cathy King at 760-941-1421 no later than February 8! Theatre Arts members…you received a form in your email to drop off at Cathy’s house with your check. Tell your friends!!
We are anxiously awaiting the completion of the Hall. If it is finished by the beginning of March we will once again welcome the Irish dancers of Clan Rince. The show that the Clan Rince Irish dancers put on is a selection of traditional steps taken to a higher level, combining the Celtic music with African drums.
On April 24 and 25, we will present our next play, “Daddy’s Dyin’; Who’s Got the Will,” written by Del Shores. This is a comedy/drama that deals with the interactions among the delightfully quirky members of a dysfunctional Texas family who have gathered together while the patriarch of the family is critically ill. It is focused on a rebirth of the spirit of the family unit, and is warm and humorous…not morbid! Auditions have been completed, and rehearsals have begun. We are very proud of our director, Al Valletta, and the talented cast and crew who have donated their time and energies to this production!
TRAVEL CLUBThere will be no meetings in January and February due to Abravanel Hall’s
renovation. However, our monthly daytrips will continue as scheduled. TC members can check their e-mail and there are flyers in the Trip Racks at the Clubhouse for current information.

and events. Line dancing is great exercise and the music and dance moves are amazing. If you haven’t yet paid the $7 dues to Village Line Dancers, please consider turning in your check at the Front Desk so you too can enjoy the fun.
As we enter the second month of dancing in the Galleria, we are all looking forward to the Abravanel Hall remodel being finished sometime in March. I commend our great instructors, Christine and Betty for being so flexible and offering all the regular dance classes during this time of construction. It has been a growing experience for us all. The following is our schedule of classes meeting in the Galleria for February:

will generally have the information you are looking for. If you still have questions, please contact me, Club President Valerie Davis, at 760 732-3828.

WOODCHUCKSWelcome to all new and old members. With the world changing so fast, you will have a great place like the woodshop to
slow down and do your own “thing.”There are a few basic items that we wish
you would keep in mind when using the shop.Treat the equipment like it is your own. No man-
handling and misuse allowed. A clean shop is a safer shop. It also means that you clean the floor where you were working. Think before you do something. If it doesn’t feel right, do not do it and just stop. There are phone numbers on the wall to help you.
Do not spread yourself all over the shop when working. Pick a spot so the next member also can have some room.
Bob Allan is the Master at Arms and guides what happens in the shop. The Club does not supply you with everything. The wood in the back room is for Christmas toys and small projects that you make in the shop.
Next month we are going to ask for help making Christmas toys for Pendleton. This is a do it when you can situation with no set times but just help as much as you can. Our other project is the aluminum cans and clear plastic bottles. This helps with buying whatever is needed to supplement items needed for the toys. Deposit your bottles and cans in the blue igloos just inside and to the right of the Homeowners Office driveway.
Supporting your Club is very important. There are only eight meeting per a year and are very entertaining plus a few other projects that come up during the year.
Thanks for reading my 192nd article.

Of course you’ve heard the sayings, “It takes a
village” and “Many hands make light work.” We are starting an email delivery service to be sure that our 40+ members who do not have email will receive important info. Rather than have a few people deliver to many, we are asking many to deliver emails to one or two nearby neighbors (exceptions are several of our members who are long-distance walkers…they’ll have three or four neighbor deliveries.) If you have not signed up to deliver an email or two, and are able to help, please contact Lainy.

7 pm, will feature Rabbi Baruch Greenberg of the nearby Chabad telling “The Story of Family…Mine and Ours.” He’s a warm, welcoming young guy and very much a mensch. Come hear what values were instilled in him and his 16 siblings that prompted all of them to be in the rabbinate. Amazing! We will meet in the Mykonos Room with limited seating, but might, at the last minute, be informed that Abravanel Hall will be available. In either case, we must have RSVP’s for chair setup and refreshments. An email will be sent out later this month requesting RSVP’s. This will require our email delivery people to test their walking shoes and take a copy of the email to their assigned neighbor/s.
So, mark your calendar and plan to attend. Upon receipt of the YC email later this month, please respond to Lainy or Don Kent. Your Board is excited to begin the Yiddish Club’s New Year and we look forward to welcoming you on March 9. Zie gezunt!
P.S. I have been asked to make a correction to info in last month’s Newsletter regarding the Minyan Circle. The sole purpose of the Minyan Circle is to meet at the home of the bereaved following the death of a loved one for a brief service to recite
the Kadish, the mourner’s prayer, which is a prayer of praise and doesn’t even mention death. Custom requires that the prayer group be comprised of at least ten people; Reform practice welcomes men and women to say the prayer. If you would be willing to attend, if needed, to help represent a supportive community, your kindness would be appreciated. Please contact either Stuart Wohl or Jerry Samoiloff.
