We Are All A Little Mad HereBy Eddie Guth, Art Coordinator

This July, we took a bow with Theater Works of Northern Nevada on the Artown stage for our work on the magnificent Mad Hatter Tea Party production props.

Under the tutelage of yours truly, our members worked diligently for three weeks to bring Alice’s Wonderland to life. They crafted colorful, oversized tea cups, saucers, and mushrooms with paper mache and paint. Large flower pots were decorated with care to represent the Mad Hatter’s signature top hat.

Our artists had a blast creating these props for this mad production and had the opportunity to see their hard work bring joy to a live audience at opening night in Wingfield Park on July 18th.

The true value in this collaboration with Artown and Theater Works of Northern Nevada, is our members’ contribution and interaction with the community. Their art touched all who saw it in a special way. They enjoyed Artown as artists, community members, and entertained spectators.

We Love This PlaceBy Heather Sam, Bresson Teen Coordinator

Community Pride. Our Club teens have it and wanted a chance to demonstrate their love for their home, but also their desire to be selfless citizens. This July, teens from our Bresson, Donald W. Raynolds and Pennington sites particiapted in a Community Clean Up. They collected four giant bags of litter and removed graffiti from Pickett Park and Fisherman’s Park. In addition to the clean up, they flexed their culinary muscles by creating lunches and distributing them to anyone in the comunity they crossed who was in need.

The Path That Pays By Ta Tiana Anderson-Hall, Leaders in Training Coordinator

Investing in the future and success of our members is important to us. This summer we selected 20 teens to participate in a paid Club internship. These teens worked up to 20 hours a week as Jr. Staff and have been saving 10% or more of their income through My Path. Saving money is a difficult task at any age and these teens saved big.

Each Jr. Staff had their income directly deposited into their savings and checking accounts. They participated in financial literacy workshops where they set savings goals and learned healthy money habits, like budgeting, from a peer leader. Each teen who reached their savings goal at the end of the summer received an additional savings incentive.

Beyond The Dusty Trail By Dan Pike, Technology Coordinator

This year’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Summer Camps were wildly successful, boasting record numbers of members in each of our Tech Specialty Camps including: Rocket Build, Robotics, and STREAM & Trails camps. Three cheers for nature and numbers! Each year, our camps become more and more refined as we incorporate outside resources, making these camps valuable, educational, unique and fun.

Members in our Rocket Build camps got to count “3…2…1 Blastoff,” but before they sent ships into the sky, they learned principle concepts of aerodynamics, lift, thrust, and drag through disc golf! Who would have thought?

In our robotics camps, members built their very-own metal movers, but not before being educated on unplugged computer science concepts, through a variety of physical activities. These kids made huge strides on the development of their engineering, programming, and teamwork skills.

This was the inaugural year in Fernley for our STREAM and Trails Camp, opening new doors for community partnerships in the Fernley and Fallon areas. Members were able to gain a new appreciation for nature and practice a variety of STREAM skills including: fishing, masonry, and hiking. One member reeled in 49 fish! A camp record! Catch and release, of course.

A Big Kig Sleepover By Ta Tiana Anderson-Hall, Leaders in Training Coordinator

On July 7th and 8th Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada participated in an overnight Leaders in Training retreat at our Donald W. Reynolds Facility. After eating pasta and getting to know one another, the teens kicked off a series of workshops. In the public speaking workshop the teens picked a topic and wrote a speech. Each teen had to then share their speech in front of the group. In another workshop they learned about Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS). Through this training, the Jr. Staff and Leaders in Training were able to learn and practice positive methods for dealing with tough situations involving members, as well as ways to reward good behavior. In the robotics workshop the teens had to work in groups to put together robotic tool kits. The final workshop allowed our teens to repurpose t-shirts as pet toys, which we later donated to the Humane Society.

After the workshops, it was time for an extravaganza! Teens played glow in the dark capture the flag, watched Zootopia, bounced on the bounce slide and indulged in a popcorn and s’mores buffet. The next morning we spent the day in Tahoe playing volleyball and catching rays.

Ready for Our Close-upLong summer days really put our facilities to the test. We play hard and

always will. So in order to keep our facilites lasting the test of time, we must take the time to reset. We use the first week of the school year to put the Clubs back together again. No child care is offered and we get to work.

Carpets are shampooed, gym floors are sealed, we deep-clean furniture and purge storage. We wash windows and repair holes, breaks or cracks. Paint walls, the parking lot curbs and signage. The sounds of laughing kids and pounding feet are replaced with machinery and maitnenace crews whistling while they work.

We thank our parents and gaurdians for understanding the importance of the big “End of Summer Clean,” we miss our members every day of that week. We also want to thank of of the crews who helped make our Clubs look brand new: Nevada Drywall, Stucco, & Stone, Custom Glass, Omboli Interiors Jenson Electric and more. We’re ready for our close up, Mr. DeMille!

Going for the Gold By Kelli Beaulieu, Athletic Director

Olympic Day is easily one of the most fulfilling days of the year for staff and members alike. Much like when athletes compete in the real Olympics, when our members participate in Olympic Day, there is an overwhelming sense of pride for your site. Members wear their colors proudly, wave their banners wildly and they give the day their all. The staff does their part to support them throughout the day- encouraging them to try any and every activity.

This was the Club’s second year partnering with the Reno Tahoe Winter Game’s Coalition, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and City of Sparks Summer program. More than 1,100 kids and teens competed in a large variety of games and activities such as: high jump, long jump, pole vault, curling, turbo javelin, lacrosse, track, golf, judo, basketball, kickball, dodgeball, downhill skiing and an obstacle course we called, “The Tough Clubber.”

The participants walked in an Opening Ceremonies ‘Athletes Parade’ to kick-off the event – complete with a fire torch. Guest appearances were made by champion Olympians and Paralympians. The kids were urged to work hard and follow their dreams if they wanted to one day stand on an Olympic podium. The day concluded with a closing ceremony in the Pennington Facility gym, where each participant received a gold medal.

Stoked on Skateboard CampBy Gary Durant, SMART Moves Coordinator

During our dog days of summer, 26 members from the William N. Pennington Boys & Girls Club paired up with D.A.F.F.Y. Skateboard Company for an amazing Skate Camp. The fun and friendly staff at D.A.F.F.Y. Skate Co. hooked up members with brand new skateboards to ride throughout the week and to cruise home on after camp. Learning any new skill, craft or sport takes practice and dedication and that is why the D.A.F.F.Y crew knew the kids would need their own boards.

Members learned basic skateboarding skills and skate park etiquette. The D.A.F.F.Y volunteers took their lessons to the next level, and taught our kids how drop in on a ramp and how to execute a few tricks to dazzle their families and friends. We spent the week riding at several local skate parks including: Mira Loma, Lazy 5, North Valley, Burgess and Idlewild Skate Park. By the end of skate camp, you wouldn’t have believed our kids had never ridden a board before.

Tales from a Volunteer By Nichelle Hull, Volunteer Coordinator

Gathered attentively in the bright and airy lobby of the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum, there is a mix of folks in different ages and life stages. These generous souls have at least one thing in common, a bright yellow lanyard attached to a blue and white Volunteer laminated badge. Moments later, a steady stream of children in bright red and white field trip t-shirts stroll off the school buses and into a large conference room. Close by, some 14 watchful community members, all Club volunteers, stand up a bit taller. They size up their potential troop of kiddos that they will be tasked with chaperoning through the museum exhibits. One veteran volunteer, Cat Todd, who began volunteering about a year ago with her husband Rog, describes her experience at a recent Discovery Museum field trip,

“One little guy, in an activity room…came up to me and asked if I was with the Club. I bent down to talk to him and said yes, I was a volunteer. I thought he was lost or had gotten separated from his group. He just handed me a piece of paper and went on his way. On the piece of paper he had drawn a heart and written “love” in the middle of the heart. Didn’t say anything else, just handed me the piece of paper and walked away. It doesn’t get any more special or rewarding than that!”

When I asked Cat what keeps her coming back to the Club to help at various events for youth and teens, she responded,

“It’s fun, invigorating, interesting and at times challenging, which is good because that keeps us on our toes! And it’s rewarding seeing the enjoyment and expressions of gratitude and affection from the kids!”

Thank you to the 50 plus summer volunteers who have manned the field trips as well as visited the summer sites this year. What you do makes an IMPACT! Anyone interested in becoming a special event and/or field trip volunteer may contact Nichelle Hull in Volunteer Services at 360-2449.
