Design PhilosophySubsea actuators series “OFO” weredeveloped by BIFFI in the ‘70s, to beoriginally employed in ship constructionto operate valves for oil loading and shipbalancing. OFO actuators are designedfor maximum operation reliability insubmerged crude oil or sea waterenvironments, and are especially suitablefor quarter-turn valves.

Subsea actuators requirements- Maximum operating reliability - Easy installation and disassembling

without need for any specialframe/device

- Sturdiness and compactness - Long operating life

A rack and pinion mechanism wasselected because of these requirements.The spool piece allows quick and safeunderwater installation and removal ofthe actuator. Perfect alignment of thevalve shaft is not vital and there is noneed for a special frame to facilitateinstallation. Considerable thought and care weregiven to the selection of materials,manufacturing, assembly and tests. OFOactuators satisfy the strictestrequirements for strength and long life.

Construction materialsThe choice of materials for the housing ofOFO and OFOS actuators was madeafter long and severe tests. Several studiesand considerations brought to the finalselection of cast iron A536 60-40-18 withan additional content of 3% Ni for thefollowing external actuators parts: - Actuator frame and cover - Pressure equaliser

- Mechanical position indicator

The body of the hydraulic cylinder is inASTM A439 D2C, that is, austenitic ironwith high nickel content (up to 20%) andthe following properties: - Good resistance to general corrosion

and particularly to pitting in calm seawater

- No graphitic corrosion - Low friction factor to ensure adequate

actuator operation.

The actuator internal parts are instainless steel AISI 420 and SAF 2205.Main bolting is in Teflon-covered alloysteel ASTM A193 B7.


To avoid all sticking effect, the the O-rings of the dynamic seals have therelevant back-up ring type step sealmade in Teflon).

In addition, the nickel chromium alloyactive metal and ASTM A439 D2C castiron have the same galvanic corrosionpotential: this avoids all galvanic effectbetween the two main materials of theactuator.

Design Particular attention was given actuatorcompactness. There are no pipings orfittings on the actuator, according to amanifold concept. The cylinders are directly fed by thehydraulic manifold and through holesmachined in the housing. For the sakeof compactness, integral pressureequalisers are made of the samematerial as the actuator.

The external surface of the actuator ispainted to Customer’s specification.

CleanlinessAfter assembly, the actuator is flushedwith the same fluid used for fieldoperations. Cleaning grade is usuallyreferred to international standards suchas NAS 1638 class 6.

Actuator description OFO and OFOS hydraulic double- andsingle-acting subsea actuators areequipped with a rack and pinionmechanism and plunger-type pistons. They are available in the followingconfigurations: - Double acting, with two cylinder- Double acting, with four hydraulic

cylinders- Single acting, with a cylinder and a

spring cartridge- Single acting, with two cylinders and

two spring cartridges

The actuator may be fitted with severaldifferent control systems, according tocustomer requirements.

OFO and OFOS actuators can beinstalled at any depth under sea leveland are complete with a diaphragmpressure equaliser. In this way theinternal pressure is equal to the staticpressure at installation depth.

OFO and OFOS actuators can beequipped with additional gear and ROVinterface for emergency valve stroking.

Spool pieceThe actuator is connected to the valveby means of a special spool piece. Theactuator is fastened to the spool pieceby means of two locking handles, easilyaccessible and located on top of theactuator. During actuator mounting, thelast 100 mm between the actuator andthe spool piece are guided by means ofa dowel taper pin. Mounting of the actuator on the spoolpiece is possible regardless of the valveposition.

The spring cartridge of single-actingactuators is also filled with oil orbiodegradable water-based fluid, and isconnected to the actuator housing. On request, the actuator equalisationdevice can be of the open type, utilisingNemis oil as actuator filling fluid.

OFO/OFOS actuators are also equippedwith: 1 - Tactile/visual local position indicator 2 - Stainless steel relief valve (for internal

overpressure) 3 - Adjustable mechanical stop on the

cylinders 4 - When the spod piece is used, the

following features are also available:

Note:The valve actuator coupling systemallows to perform the actuator/valvediagnosis by disconnecting the actuatorcoupling from the valve stem adaptorwithout removing the actuator. Thereforethe actuator can be stroked withoutmoving the valve, thus allowingfunctional check of the actuator itself.

The lower flange of the spool piece isspecifically designed to comply with therequirements of the different valvemanufacturers. The coupling andfastening quickness, allows to use asingle actuator for several valves,providing they are equipped with thesame spool piece. The spool piece is complete with: - adjustable mechanical stops. These

are set during actuator/valve assembly(before immersion) and allow to removeand replace the submerged actuatorwith no need for further resetting

- electric limit switches (optional)- relief valve to prevent internal

overpressure (in case of leakagethrough the valve stem)

- drain valve for internal flushing - protection cover, installed on the spool

piece after actuator removal. The coveris equipped with a tactile/visualposition indicator.

The spool piece can also be supplied ina pressure retaining version.

The actuator and the spool piecearrangement can accommodate valveshafts with acceptable misalignment of10 degrees from vertical and 3 degreesfrom horizontal.

INSPECTION ANDTESTING

All activities are carried out inaccordance with Quality Assurancewritten procedures. The Quality Manualcomplies with the requirements of ISO9001:2000 and API SPEC. Q-1standard. The standard inspection and testingactivities for OFO and OFOS subseaactuator are: - material inspection: a) Casting: material inspection according

to EN 10204 3.1/3.2, according toBIFFI procedure in compliance withASME V

b) Bars: material inspection according toEN 10204 3.1/3.2 standard

c) Machined parts: dye penetrant and/orX-ray, ultrasonic test etc... areperformed according to BIFFIprocedures in compliance withInternational Standards as applicable

d) Non-metallic and non-critical lowstressed mechanical componentsincluding standard nuts and bolts:according to EN 10204 2.2 standard

- final inspection: Each actuator undergoes a finalfunctional test where the following main checkes are performed.

- Leakage test - Torque output - Operating speed - Angular stroke - Control group functional test (when

applicable) Special testing activities and witnesstests are performed on customerrequest. This also includes tests insimulated subsea conditions using anhyperbaric chamber.
