Cape Wind – 1st US project
130 Wind turbines, 3.6 MW Siemens turbines
468 MW installed capacity, 174 MW average
Turbines are 258’ tall, highest blade tip of 440’ tall, in grid array, turbines are spaced 6 to 9 football fields apart
Horseshoe Shoal still open to boating

Why Nantucket Sound?
Nantucket Sound is ideally suited for offshore wind energy development
– strong wind – relatively protected,
shallow water – close to electrical
interconnect – near regional load
demand

Wind Data Results
Cape Wind would tend to produce power when it is MOST NEEDED
Strong wind speeds in 11 of past 12 record electric demand summer events, due to strong sea breeze effect.
Average production during 10 peak electric demand events at 76% capacity, twice the normal average.
Strong winter production when natural gas availability is lowest

Long Term PPA with National Grid
NG contract to buy half CW output approved by MA Dept. Public Utilities
CW year-1 price of 18.7 cents much lower than solar, but higher than land based wind
Unique benefits led to contract approval – scale, delivery, performance on peak
As economies of scale reached price of offshore wind will come down. Actual ‘bill impact’ is modest.
Price suppression of wholesale electric market
