Stokes’ Law states that, given time and alarge enough surface area, oil and waterwill eventually separate, giving you twodistinctive layers. A good system of sep-aration will give you those two layers.

To facilitate this process of separa-tion, many use built-in oil/water intercep-tors, or separators. By using acombination of flow patterns, baffles, plates or aeration to increase contact withthe oily water, the process is expedited bymaximizing the number of small dropletsthat will agglomerate and rise to the sur-face, resulting in a concentrated oil layerand a layer of oil-free water beneath.

While separators themselves canperform effectively, there is still the prob-lem of removing the separated oil. Whenoil is not continuously removed from thesurface of the oil/water separator, severalproblems can occur:• Heavy rain or water flow can exceedthe design of the separator and wash outthe oil build-up• Failure to remove the oil can cause ex-cessive oil build-up, increasing thechance for the oil to escape and reducethe area of the separation chamber• The oil layer prevents oxygen from

reaching the water, allowing anaerobicbacteria to grow, plugging separatorplates and emitting foul odors• During maintenance, or as componentsare lifted out, the tank walls and interiorcomponents become completely oil-coated• The oil layer can make visual inspec-tions of the coalescer and componentsvery difficult

Companies have tried a number of meth-ods to remove oil from the separators and

Curragh Mine is located in the coal-richBowen Basin of Central Queensland andit covers an area of approximately 12,600hectares. It is situated 14 kilometersnorth-west of Blackwater and approxi-mately 200 kilometers west of Rock-hampton.

The mine predominantly producesthree products. These include low ashhard coking coal, pulverised coal injec-tion coal and high ash steaming coal. Itsupplies both the domestic market andmarkets worldwide. Paramount to themine’s efficient operation is the healthand safety of all employees.

The mine constantly reviews its pro-cedures and equipment to ensure the

safety of staff, and as part of this processthe mine’s maintenance team trialled thenew Kemppi Minarc Evo 140 VRD (volt-age reduction device).

“You can no longer use a weldingmachine on a mine site without VRD anda lot of our existing welding equipmentwas getting on, so we were keen to havea look at some of the new welding equip-ment,” explained Ron Kemp of themine’s maintenance team for area mobileequipment.

The maintenance team for area mo-bile equipment is responsible for ensur-ing that all mobile mining equipmentremains in operational condition to meetmining requirements. It maintains the

mine’s rear dump trucks, loading units, dozers, graders and all ancillary equip-ment. The team consists of 15 men pershift who are mainly boilermakers withextensive welding experience. Over theyears they have used various weldingpackages.

“We were already familiar with theKemppi brand having used their weldersin the past and we were keen to trail thenew VRD model. We were after a weld-ing model which not only met all thesafety criteria but was light to carry andvery portable.

“The machine would be primarilyused to weld low hydrogen electrodes.Apart from general field welding we al-ways need to fix handrails to our heavymobile equipment and we wanted a ded-icated machine for this task,” explainedKemp. With oil and gas extraction moving intoharsher and deeper environments the de-mand for high pressure and highly cor-rosion-resistant tubing is rising. FineTubes’ expertise in manufacturing spe-cialist corrosion resistant alloys withthose properties needed for control andinstrumentation tubing provides cost ef-fective and long term solutions.

Topside Instrumentation Fine Tubes has been supplying a widerange of high-performance tubes to lead-ing oil and gas companies for the protec-

tion of their hydraulic control and instru-mentation systems. During the oil andgas extraction process, mainly seamlessprecision tubing as straight lengths areused for instrumentation equipment thatcontrols measuring devices and supplieshydraulic pumps and tools. The tubing isalso used in onshore control panels, top-side processing facilities, offshore subseamanifolds and templates up to 2,000 me-ters under the sea.

Fine Tubes’ control and instrumen-tation tubing is available from 1.6 mil-limeters (0.063 inches) outside diameter

for precision instrumentation and moni-toring applications on drilling tools up to63 millimeters (2.475 inches) OD. Highstrength stainless-steel, duplex and superduplex stainless-steel, titanium and nickelalloys are used in manufacture. Operatingconditions can require their products tobe rated up to 60,000Psi operating pres-sure and with tensile strengths greaterthan 220ksi (1,515MPa).

The tube mill’s extensive range ofsuper austenitic and nickel alloy gradetubes such as alloy 625, 825 and alloy400 tubes offer longer term solutionsover stainless-steels for in harsh offshoreenvironments. Moreover, Fine Tubes’ ex-pertise in special grade stainless steelssuch as 904L and 6 Moly make the tubemanufacturers the ideal partner for thesupply of instrumentation packages usedin the topside construction of OffshoreFPSO, FPSSs, Spars and TLPs.

Specialist Alloy Tubing TackleCorrosion in Topsideand Subsea Applications

In 904L the corrosion resistant prop-erties are superior to the conventionalchrome nickel stainless steels, in particu-lar to sulphuric, phosphoric and aceticacids. It also has a high resistance to pit-ting in chloride solutions, a high resist-ance to both crevice and stress corrosioncracking. Therefore, alloy 904L has ex-cellent formability and weldability as wellas excellent toughness, even down tocryogenic temperatures.

This grade is particularly useful incontrol and instrumentation tubing appli-cations where 316 and 317L are not suit-able. 6 Moly benefits from high resistanceto pitting and crevice corrosion as well ashigh strength compared with conventionalaustenitic stainless steels such as 316L.The alloy can also provide excellent re-sistance to stress corrosion cracking al-lowing tube cold forming.

Compliant with safety regulations, the Minarc Evo 140 delivers safer weld-ing in category A, B and C environments.Suitable for MMA and TIG processes, the unit is energy efficient and boastslarge voltage reserves and automatic arcforce control.

After trialing the Minarc Evo 140VRD for three weeks Kemp bought two140 VRD units for his team. “I thinkit’s fair to say we were all suitably im-pressed. Apart from having all thesafety features, the machine onlyweighs about 5 kg so it is very light tocarry around. lowCAM – ES, every particle has its ownimage stored along with more than 30 dif-ferent measurements. The measurementsenable the system software to automati-cally characterize different types of parti-cles based upon shape without operatorintervention.

The system automatically pulls

drilling fluid from the flow loop, dilutesit (if necessary), measures it and returnsit to the flow loop (or to waste, if de-sired). The software records particle sizeand shape distributions, concentrations, and performs trend analysis in real-time.The system is completely self-contained,and can be controlled remotely via a net-work connection if desired.

In addition to the FlowCAM – ESSystem, Fluid Imaging will also be dis-

system based on steam injection intothe oil storage tanks. Lately, alternativesolutions based on tank heating withlow temperature compact heating coilshave come on the market. To verify ifthis hot water based solution can work,Parat has installed one compact heat-ing coil and one steam injection nozzleinto a test-tank filled with heavy oil.

The results from the tests clearlyshowed the participants that use of aheating coil for increasing the viscosityof the oil is not a viable solution andthat the theoretical conclusions matchthe empirical results.

After testing with the hot watercoil was concluded, Parat started upthe steam injection system and the par-

ticipants were then able to witnessthrough live temperature logging thatthe oil was evenly heated in a matter ofminutes. To Parat’s own knowledgeand based on information from NOFOthe hot water coil system has up untilnow only been tested in water. The em-pirical data from the tests performed inheavy oil clearly show that the outputfrom the hot water coil is only around10 percent of the output measuredusing the same coil in water.

“Parat Halvorsen hope that by per-forming this test we have contributedto increasing the competence in themarket and that for future projects forvessels that shall have oil recovery ca-pabilities, solutions that actually workin a live situation with oil spill onwater will be selected,” Yngve M.Halvorsen, CEO Parat Halvorsen AS.

The oil then gravity drainsinto a collection tank. Both units are de-signed to operate on a continuous basiswhile unattended.

The looped tube is long enough tocover a large skimming area and requires

low maintenance. In addition to their use on new

oil/water separators, a number of mount-ing systems are available, which enableoil skimmers to be retrofitted onto exist-ing oil/water separators.

Customers are pleased with the re-sults of the addition of the Model 6V andthe Model 5H to their oil/water separa-tors. By using Oil Skimmers skimmingunits on their separators, they save timeand money by not having to use the tra-ditional oil removal methods. Also, theaddition of these systems has eased theenvironmental concern of oil dischargeand eliminated the problems of manyseparators.

thermal expansion and contraction orvibration loosening. This is espe-cially true for fossil fuel producersand chemical processors alike, whoutilize their Belleville spring washersevery day to help insure cleaner, saferand more efficient operations. Their“flange bolting” bellevilles are avail-able in a variety of materials designedto handle a wide range of operatingtemperatures and caustic, corrosiveenvironments. This “live-loading”function is helping many maintenancedepartments reduce overall costswhile providing safer operating envi-ronments.

Their manufactured disc springsare critical in the effective operation ofdrilling tools used in locating and ex-tracting oil and gas resources thou-sands of feet from the earth’s surface.Super tankers use our products in theturret assemblies that support the feedlines while filling the carriers from be-neath the ocean’s floor. In addition todisc springs, severe service valve man-ufacturers use many of the flow controlcomponents they produce. These in-clude: body gaskets and seals, seats, seat holders and locking rings, flangeglands, bearing inserts and retainersand even some custom Bellevilles de-signed with special travel limiters.

Subsea Control LinesImprovements in the technology for theenhanced exploitation of oil and gasfields has increasingly required the use oflong continuous lengths of stainless-steeland nickel alloy tubing for:• Hydraulic control• Instrumentation• Chemical injection

The benefits of this tubular technologyhave resulted in reduced operating costs,

improved recovery methods and reducedcapital expenditure by connecting down-hole valves and chemical injection withremote and satellite wells to a fixed orfloating central operating platform.

Fine Tubes offers coiled control linein stainless steel and nickel alloys. Theirproducts are used in the following appli-cations:• Downhole hydraulic control lines• Downhole chemical injection lines• Subsea control lines for hydraulicpower and chemical injection• Smoothbore control lines used in fibre-optic applications
