10STATE ROAD LAWS

NONRESIDENT PRIVILEGES Massachusetts grants the sameprivileges to nonresidents as to Massachusetts residents.SPEED LAW Observe posted speed limits.HAZARDOUS CARGO All hazardous cargo (HC) and cargo tankersare prohibited from the Boston Tunnels.DRUNK DRIVING LAWS Massachusetts enforces these laws rigorously.MOBILE ELECTRONIC DEVICE LAWS Operators cannot use anymobile electronic device to write, send, or read an electronicmessage (including text messages, emails, instant messages, oraccessing the internet) while operating a vehicle. Operators underthe age of 18 cannot use any mobile electronic device for anyreason while operating a motor vehicle. The only exception is forreporting an emergency.GUN LAW A Massachusetts firearms license is mandatory. Theunlicensed or unauthorized carrying of firearms calls for a minimumcompulsory jail sentence of one year.RUBBISH DISPOSAL The disposal of rubbish is prohibited on publichighways. Violation may result in a fine of not less than $200 ormore than $3,000 and suspension of driver’s license and registration.Please help us keep our highways clean. Please Do Not Litter.TRUCK IDLING Truck engine idling time at all the Massachusettsservice areas is restricted to five minutes.DISABILITY PARKING Special parking spaces for persons withdisabilities are provided throughout the state. Massachusettsrecognizes official forms of identification used by other states, suchas placards, stickers, or plates. Please be advised that vehiclesillegally parked will be ticketed or towed.EQUAL ACCOMMODATIONS Massachusetts law guaranteesadvantages, facilities, and privileges of any place to all personsregardless of race, religion, color, gender, gender identity orexpression, creed, ancestry, veteran’s status, background, nationalorigin, disability, or sexual orientation.HITCHHIKING IS PROHIBITED ON ALL MASSACHUSETTS STATEHIGHWAYS Massachusetts enforces this law rigorously.DISABLED VEHICLES If disabled, go to the breakdown lane to the rightof the solid line. Turn on hazard lights and remain with the vehicle, butstand on the other side of the guardrail when possible. Use flares toindicate your position on the road. Do not obstruct rear lights. Carry aflashlight at night. Exercise extreme caution.DISABLED VEHICLES IN TUNNELS Pull to side of road if you can.Activate hazard flashing lights. Call 911 and follow instructions. Stay inyour vehicle if it safe to do so. Wait for emergency responders forassistance. MOVE OVER LAW Move over and slow down for emergency vehicles.SAFETY BELTS Massachusetts law requires all vehicle occupants tobe properly restrained by a safety belt or child safety restraint.PARKING IN SERVICE PLAZA FIRE LANES IS STRICTLY PROHIBITEDFire lanes are for emergency vehicles only.
