As such, their value goes beyond the market price for five head of calves.” Paschal said if a bull is used for three years and the producer does not introduce any outside female replacements into the herd, that bull will then be responsible for up to 87 percent of the cowherd’s genetics. “A lot of products and equipment are touted as being the best investment a cattle producer can make, but a good bull is the only thing that can really match that description,” Paschal says. “If you maintain a closed herd, the genes entering the cow herd will come completely from the bulls you select, and that’s a huge contribution—for better or worse—to the herd’s overall genetic makeup. “When you look at it from that perspective, you see just how valuable a good bull is to a commercial cow herd.” Bull Value to Commercial Herd Exceeds ‘Relative’ Value Time-Dated Material Volume 26 • Issue 1 Heartland Limousin Association • 23244 Gopher Drive• East Bethel, MN 55005 NEWS Back In Time................... 20 & 30 Covering Ground ........................ 4 Fullblood Limousin Alliance ..... 28 Heartland Calendar ..................... 3 Heartland Highlights ................ 10 Junior Beat ................................ 29 On The Road Again ............ 6 & 8 Recipe of the Month ................... 8 Sales .................................... 32-38 STATE NEWS Iowa News....................... 12 & 13 Kansas News ............................. 14 Minnesota News.................. 16-18 Missouri News .......................... 20 Nebraska News.......................... 22 South Dakota News .................. 24 Wisconsin News ........................ 26 ADVERTISERS Badger Hill Farm......................... 4 Bar JZ Ranches ........................... 5 Black Hills Stock Show.............. 18 Bullis Creek Ranch .................... 35 Deb V ....................................... 27 DeRungs Limousin ..................... 8 Franseen Limousin ...................... 7 Fullblood Limousin Alliance ..... 17 GV Limousin ............................ 23 Iowa Beef Expo ......................... 31 J Yorga Farms .............................. 9 Leishman Performance Limousin .. 38 LIMI-Gene ............................... 33 Lonely Valley Seedstock............. 26 Lura Limousin........................... 30 LV Bar....................................... 30 Mill Road Limousin .................... 4 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic..... 19 Nolz Limousin .......................... 12 Peterson Limousin ..................... 13 Pinegar Limousin ................... • The value of bulls in commercial herds goes beyond the ‘relative’ value typically ascribed to them in market pricing, says a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert.

“In publications referencing cattle values for commercial producers as well as reports from beef breed associations, the value of a bull is often given as equivalent to the average value of five weaned calves,” Joe Paschal, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist based in Corpus Christi, says in an Extension news release.

“This has been a long-held comparison for determining the value of a bull, but it really doesn’t take into account all aspects of what bulls provide to the herd.”

Paschal says the value of one bull to five weaned calves fluctuated over the past several years.

“At least up until around 2010, producers paid less than 50 percent of the value of those five calves on a bull,” Paschal explains.

“Then from 2011 until 2015, producers began to pay more, including up to 100 percent of the value of five calves in 2013. Then in 2015, producers paid up to 150 percent of the value of five calves for one bull.

“And weaned calf prices dropped in 2016, the ratio dropped back to about 115 percent—between $5,000 and $5,250—closer to the average value of the five calves.”

But this ratio doesn’t fully reflect the additional value bulls supply to the herd, Paschal says.

“Bulls supply the genetics for the next generation of replacement females in most commercial herds, except those strictly using terminal crossing,” he says.

“It should be remembered that bulls are more than just ‘cow fresheners’ as my former colleague, Rick Machen, retired AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in Uvalde, was fond of saying. As such, their value goes beyond the market price for five head of calves.”

Paschal said if a bull is used for three years and the producer does not introduce any outside female replacements into the herd, that bull will then be responsible for up to 87 percent of the cowherd’s genetics.

“When you look at it from that perspective, you see just how valuable a good bull is to a commercial cow herd.”

Beverly and I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2018. January has always been a symbol for setting goals and having a fresh look at life. Resolutions in our house go by the wayside by February, but our goal setting seems to be on a

bit more of a solid foundation. It seems as though this year has

many puzzles as to what we can expect. Far be it for me to predict what will be in store for the cattle industry. Events and activities beyond our ability to control will have a great

impact on our profitability; some positive and others negative.

The feeder prices have held steady while the futures on fat cattle are more volatile. With the surplus in corn, I would assume that more farmers with facilities will try to add value to their corn by feeding livestock. I think the export/import markets will impact prices as well. I was told that the export market contributes about $30 per hundred weight in the fed beef market. That would be a vital area to hold on to. The agricultural industry overall is certainly impacted by the global markets.

One area we can control is the production of quality beef which is desired both domestically as well as in the foreign market. Limousin certainly has a role of ensuring quality beef, especially in the natural market. We have made great strides in our quality without adding chemically fed-on pounds. Our genetics have produced a product which is desired in the meat market. Increased quality plus our ability to yield creates a demand for Limousin sired feeders. As the commercial producers get ready to buy bulls for the upcoming breeding season, we need to make sure our bull offering is the best it can be. Good luck to our breeders who will be offering their

genetics for sale and their customers who will be purchasing the offering.

An area that is uncontrollable in the beef industry is the environmental impact of drought. Last year, 2017, brought severe drought to all areas of the Heartland, and it was especially significant in the North and South Dakota areas west of the Missouri River. According to the severe drought maps, dry conditions remain a problem for the northwest part of the Heartland and ironically the southeast sections of Missouri. Hopefully, adequate moisture will be the norm for all the areas of the U.S.

As for Beverly and me, we are looking forward to the winter and spring sales of Limousin genetics and the opportunity to see everyone at those events. The Limousin activities in the Heartland not only bring producers together to make business decisions on which bulls and females to buy, but also brings people and friends together for the social contact as well.

We invite all Heartland Limousin breeders and other Limousin enthusiasts to attend the HLA general meeting, banquet, and benefit auction in Des Moines, Iowa, February 13 at the FFA Building on the state fairgrounds.

Thank you for your continued support of the Heartland Limousin Association!

Dean and I continue to stay busy traveling throughout the Midwest for the Heartland. In addition to the Heartland states, we also attend sales and other events across the United States. This keeps us “on the road,” for many days during the year.

It’s always interesting to see what will welcome us when we turn into our driveway. We’ve encountered snow and ice at the end of October and the first week of November this year. Then the weather turned really nice; sunny and warm. The snow melted and it actually felt like spring—even though the calendar said it was the middle—end of November.

We arrived home from a trip at the end of November to find deep ruts in the ditch by our house. Upon further inspection, we discovered that a chunk had been taken out of a tree. It looked like a car either missed the curve or swerved to avoid something. It went into the ditch and the car was stopped by the tree. Following the direction of the ruts and the chunk out of the tree, it looks as though the front, right side of the car suffered the damage.

Last year we came home to find that we had no water in the house. We

have a well and the pipe from the well to the house froze. Fortunately, we were able to put a heater in the well pump and thawed out the system. That is the danger of living in the country and being gone during the cold winter months.

I’ve talked about my biggest fear in a previous Heart Beat column—finding little creatures in the house. That happened in the summer of 2016 when we discovered three mice in our home. We were able to trap two and one died in the living room floor. Thank goodness we haven’t seen any more of those little critters around.

With the upcoming sale season fast approaching, I would like to leave the members with this message: GROW.

G – Get involved in your state, regional and national associations.

R – Read cattle publications and become knowledgeable about the industry.

O – Organize your life, put first things first.W – Welcome new breeders into your association

and help them get acquainted with other Limousin members.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the sales, annual meetings, banquets, and benefit auctions. These events are a great opportunity to reconnect with seedstock and commercial breeders, friends, and other Limousin enthusiasts. • Kansas News…Mark Your Calendar

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 10, 2018. This is the date that the members of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) have set for their upcoming state sale. It will be held at the El Dorado Livestock Auction in El Dorado, Kansas, located in south-central Kansas. This is the same location as the 2017 KLBA sponsored sale.

Consignments are due in early January and should be sent to Jerry and Pat Meek, sale managers. Entry forms can be obtained from them or on the KLBA website. We hope to have a large number of Limousin breeders, commercial cattlemen and other Limousin enthusiasts join us to part in this state sponsored activity.

Members of the Kansas junior and senior Limousin Associations will hold their annual meetings. In addition, there will also be a silent auction fundraiser to help support the associations throughout the upcoming year. The money raised from the auction goes to support our junior and senior associations throughout the upcoming year. We appreciate everyone who has donated and/or bid on items in the past. If you are unable to attend, contact any member of the board of directors with your bid.

Watch for more information on the KLBA website and in the March/April Heart Beat.

Wayne and Kent Grimm and their families, Summit Farms of Morrill, Kansas, were named by the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association as the recipients of the 2017 “Commercial Producer of the Year.”

Wayne and his brother, Kent, own and operate a rock quarrying operation in the northeastern part of Kansas along with grain farming and raising livestock. Wayne is in charge of the livestock and Kent runs the grain operation. Wayne oversees the calving of the 550 Limousin cowherd as well as an additional 75 Angus cows.

They feed out their production at their farm and market them as natural, hormone free cattle. Their neighbor also utilizes their feedlot, placing an additional 50 head managed by Summit Farms. The Grimm brothers emphasize structure and fertility in their fed cattle operation.

For several years, the Grimm family has produced fed cattle for Laura’s Lean Beef. They now focus on the natural market, with an increase in growth and marbling. They use their own bulls to breed the spring

bred cows. The fall herd cows are heat cycled, synchronized, and then embryos are placed in recipient cows followed by exposure to their bulls for 45 days. Wayne appreciates the ease of calving, growth, and increased docility of Limousin.

Congratulations to Summit Farms for this prestigious honor!

The 17th annual Minnesota Beef Expo was held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul October 19-22, 2018. It was a perfect fall weekend for the Expo, which brings cattle producers and youth livestock exhibitors together to celebrate and promote the beef industry.

Every year the Expo selects a “Featured Breed” and this year the

two breeds were Limousin and South Devon. Members from the two associations were busy throughout the week helping with various events, including lining up cattle, assisting with the judging competition, working as ring help, and serving meals. The Minnesota Limousin Association would like to thank Kevin Bachmeier for being our breed representative to the Minnesota Beef Expo.

The Expo had a record breaking 1,000+ head entered in the junior show. This year more than 750 youth came together from all over the Upper Midwest to compete in the weekend’s junior events.

The four-day event began Thursday, October 19 with a Youth Knowledge Bowl followed by the Sullivan Supply Stock Show University Fitting Seminar. That evening around 500 people gathered for the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP) “Beef Industry Ideas & Insights Symposium.”

After the panel discussion, the juniors took part in a variety of breakout sessions. The evening concluded with the keynote address

by Kevin Ochsner, “It’s Your Bid,” a speech designed to motivate people to use their time, talents and treasures to succeed in the beef industry.

There were a total of 289 participants in the judging competition that was held Friday. Twenty-one teams took part in the fitting contest later that day, hosted by Sullivan Supply. The youth activities ended with 450 contestants in the Junior Showmanship Contest.

Saturday was filled with sales during the day followed by the Supreme

Row selection and a roast beef meal served to more than 1,000 people sponsored by the Limousin and South Devon Associations along with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association. The evening concluded with the presentation of the Minnesota Youth Beef Expo Program (MYBEP) heifers to eleven junior recipients.

The Expo came to a close on Sunday with the junior show, featuring 1,000+ head of cattle. The show began at 8:00 a.m. and continued throughout the day.

Cattlemen to Cattlemen host Kevin Ochsner of Kersey, CO; South Devon Association President Dar Giess of Pierz, MN; Jerry Delaney of Herefords Inc., Lake Benton, MN; and Executive Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association Dean Summerbell were the panelists who kicked off the Minnesota Beef Expo October 19, 2017. Dean Summerbell also served as the moderator of the panel.

  • Minnesota News…

One of the highlights of the Minnesota Beef Expo, held every year in October at the state fairgrounds, is the presentation of donated heifers to qualified juniors as part of the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP). This year 11 heifers, donated from breed associations and the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association, were given at the Expo. There were over 80 applicants for these MYBEP heifers.

Since this program began in 2004, more than 100 heifers have been donated. The requirements for the program state that juniors must be between the ages of 12-16, be a 4-H, FFA or junior breed association member, and live in Minnesota, Iowa, North or South Dakota or Wisconsin.

Juniors who receive the heifers are responsible for raising, breeding and maintaining complete records on the care of the animal while providing monthly progress reports to the original owner and the Minnesota Beef Expo. The breeders who donated

heifers also serve as mentors to the MYBEP youth.

The recipients not only receive a heifer but also two straws of semen from Minnesota Select Sires, an Andis cattle clipper, a show stick, and 100 pounds of Purina Show Chow.

    Wulf CattleThe Minnesota Limousin

Association would like to THANK Wulf Cattle of Morris for donating a Limousin heifer. Wulf Cattle has been a seedstock supplier for more than half a century selling Limousin cattle across the United States and Canada. Lim-Flex and Angus cattle were added later to the herd.

Wulf Cattle registers 1,500 cows with A.I. and embryo transfer programs being extensively used for each calf crop. Their goal is to produce quality beef, to increase heterosis, and target specific markets. They market 650 bulls and 100 females in addition to selling more than 50,000 value-added fed cattle annually.

Their feed yards are located in Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska. Wulf Cattle is fully invested in proving genetics through extensive feeding operations and carcass data collection. Their goal is the same today as it was decades ago, to create opportunities for the customers to succeed using Wulf Cattle genetics.

Four generations of the McLellan family have called their ranch south of Lantry home since 1910. Dale and Terri, their son, Kerry, along with Dale’s brother, Ryan, and their families work the ranch today. They farm corn, wheat,

sunflowers, and hay. Their ranching operation has received numerous awards, and in 2014 the South Dakota Limousin Association selected Dale as the “Commercial Producer of the Year.”

Dale and Terri have served many leadership roles in the Dupree area. Dale has been on the Dupree Rodeo

Zona Vig Chosen 2017 South Dakota Ag “Woman of the Year”Reprinted with permission from the Cattle Business Weekly

Zona Vig of rural Opal, South Dakota, was honored at the 2017 South Dakota Women in Agriculture conference in Deadwood, South Dakota, October 20 as the “Ag Woman of the Year.”

She and her husband, Dwayne, a retired United Airlines pilot, have lived on the prairie in northern Meade County since 1970. He commuted to Chicago to fly for the company until 2001. Dwayne was selected as the 2005 South Dakota Limousin “Commercial Producer of the Year” and he received the national award from the North American Limousin Foundation in 2006.

Zona keeps busy educating the public about the industry of agriculture, she is a Farm Bureau member, and an activist for the Dakota Rural Action committee as well as an adamant supporter of the sport of rodeo. She served as the National

    D i r e c t o r for the Miss Rodeo South D a k o t a organization.

She was also involved in welcoming foreign visitors to their ranch through the Community for Agriculture program, where they hosted people from Denmark, England, South Africa, and Australia.

Carv Thompson, who had a long-running radio program, nominated her for the honor. He stated, “Zona is a working ranch wife, doing everything from housekeeping and gardening to working the cattle. She is a “with-it” lady who exemplifies agricultural women. She works tirelessly for the improvement of farm and ranch life, and the education of the public on the importance of agriculture to our country and to the world.”

Rhonda Wulf Selected as a Top 10 Industry LeaderReprinted with permission from the Cattle Business Weekly

Each year, the Cattle Business Weekly newspaper announces a new class of Top 10 Industry Leaders under the age of 40. This honor is reserved for people that are serving and leading their ag industries, communities, and businesses in big ways. The Cattle Business Weekly has a nine-state coverage area and these individuals reflect people who reside, do business, or have an impact in those states.

Rhonda Wulf of Aberdeen, South Dakota, was one of the individuals selected for this prestigious award. She works at the Branded Programs of DemKota Beef in Aberdeen. She started working at the procurement department in September 2015, shortly after the plant opened. Rhonda plays a vital role building relationships and exploring new opportunities as the branded beef manager.

She was raised on her family’s cattle business in Morris, Minnesota, where she developed a progressive mind for the beef industry. She worked at Wulf Cattle after college and was

later accepted into the master’s program at the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management. The experience catapulted her into a career with DemKota Beef, a start-up packing plant.

With a strong background in 4-H, FFA, and the beef genetics/cattle feeding side of agriculture, Rhonda felt well-grounded in her understanding of the beef industry. She said that the real perspective on the whole industry didn’t come full circle until she attended the King Ranch Institute, which is why she believes so strongly in a positive internship program. This is the first year for the DemKota Beef Internship Program. Under her leadership, eight college interns work at the beef plant in various areas. At least one hour per week is spent with a manager in each of the beef plant’s various departments. “It’s been so rewarding to see our interns grow and watch them come into their own realizations regarding what they need to do in school and life to make a difference,” she says.www.facebook.com/HeartlandLimousinAssociation

  • Wisconsin…

Peterson Limousin Farms of Osceola, Wisconsin, expanded their already successful meat supply business to include a retail store in the Market House Mall located in Lowertown St. Paul, Minnesota. The Petersons opened the retail establishment in October and have experienced continued growth of their customer base supplying a variety of Limousin and Lim-Flex cuts of beef plus various pork products at the trendy, upscale business location. They are open seven days a week.

Andy Peterson heads up the market division of Peterson Craftsmen Meats which includes some 35 restaurants in and around the metropolitan Minneapolis/St. Paul area as well as communities in Wisconsin. Three of the restaurants that occupy space

in the Market House get their meat supply from Petersons.

The retail store has a distinct advantage because their location is directly across from the Farmers Market in St. Paul. Customer traffic is particularly high during the open hours of the market.

The Petersons operate on the vertical business model from “Gate to Plate.” They raise and feed out their Limousin and Lim-Flex beef plus the pork production. They also select and purchase Limousin and Lim-Flex feeder calves that meet their parameters. The lamb portion of the meat supply is purchased from the processing plant.

Andy said that the customers they serve enjoy the taste of Limousin. That’s good to hear!

    A C H Holdings HostVet Students

Stephen, Emily and Carter Haynes, A C H Holdings, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, hosted approximately 50 students and faculty from the Student Chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine December 15, 2017. The trip

was planned by students, Tia Simon and Kathryn Hamilton. Dr. Derek Foster and Dr. Harrison Dudley, two large animal professors, also accompanied the students. The students visited farms in North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Tia said, “Visiting these different states not only offered a unique perspective on large animal medicine and the food animal industry, but also provided our students the opportunity to network with various veterinarians and farm managers which will be crucial to our students as they graduate and begin applying for jobs.”

At the Haynes Family Farms, the tour was introduced to the

advantages and history of the Limousin breed and was provided with a Fullblood Limousin beef meal. Kathryn said, “The information gained from each stop will help to broaden our students understanding of production agriculture and medicine, while also helping us to understand food safety and food security on a global scale.” She also states the hospitality and meal provided to the students and faculty by the Haynes family was one of the highlights of the three-state tour.
