Counseling the women of Southeastern is Helen Patterson Owens. Southeastern women appreciate the sincerity and earnestness with which Mrs. Owens helps them with their problems. Mrs. Owens helps to keep the standards high for the women of Southeastern State College. She is also resident Counselor of Hallie McKinney Hall. Her A.B. degree was completed at Oklahoma A&M and her M.A. was completed at Columbia University.

The Southeostern ART CLUB is active throughout the yeor, end few important events toke place on the campus without its participation.

During the 1951-52 year James Barnett was club President, end Madeline Stevens, Art professor, was sponsor. Many of the social meetings, as well as initiation ceremonies, were held in the Stevens home.

The Beaux Arts Ball is the principle event of the year which the club sponsors. Members also assist in the presentation of individual and group exhibits, and plan and design decorations for the annual Christmas candlelighting service.

TRIBES COUNCIL

TRI BES' COUNCIL is a relatively young organization, being formed January, 1946, but it is one of the most octive groups on the campus. Membership in Tribes' Council is limited to students, former students. alumni, ond faculty members who are of Indian descent. The ideals of Tribes' Council are high and its purposes may be summed up: To promote fellowship and to preserve those pertinent facts con­cerning the well-being of the Indian in the past, present and future.

This orgonization does not limit all of its affairs to those of a business nature. They enter a ·float in the Homecoming Parade and participate in the Friendship Fire.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The STUDENT COUNCIL at Southeastern is the organization .>¥hich super­vises ond directs student affairs. Each ·spring the President, Vice President, ond Secretory are chosen in an all campus election which alwoys orouses interest on the part of the student body. When classes are organized ot the stort of the semester, representatives are chosen for the Student Council.

The INTERFRATERNITY COU NCIL. which is sponsored by the Counselor of Women, Helen O wens. and the Counselor of Men, John Krattiger, is composed of two representatives from each of the social sororities and fraternities on the campu:;. These organizotions are Phi Sigm" Epsilon and Sigma Tau Gamma, social fra ternities, and Alpha Sigma Tau a nd Pi Kappa Sigma, social sororit ies.

The purpose of the Interfraternity Council is to make rules a nd regulations regarding the activities of the social fraternities on the Southea~tern camp us. The council meets the first Tuesday of every month.

The social dance group known as the DISC JOCKEY CLUB with the motto ''All for fun ond fun for all," has lived up to expectations after its fifth year as a club.

Dave Stevens, head football coach, is a graduate and former athlete of South­eostern. He came to Southeastern in 1941 and has a very impressive record behind him.

Coach Stevens' Savages have won three conference plilys since I 946 and have finished second three times.

In the past six years he has won 38 games, lost 19, and tied 4. Cooch Stevens olso serves as trod coach.

Although the Savages have not won a trilck crown in the past six years, they finished second in 1947, 1948, and 1949.

They were nosed out by OBU in 1947 by two points Md again in 1948 by I!J point.

Tho 1951 Sovoges finished the seoson with six losses ond only 1hreo victories but tho5e who wotchod them p loy ~now that the team was much better thon their record indicated.

He is the only coach ever to w;n ~e Oklahoma Co egiate conference in basketball for five consecutive years. Coa c'-t Sullivans ball-control ond defensive type bas~etball has spread throughout the state and neighooring stole~.

Coach Sullivan is also line coach for the football team and coaches tho baseboll team.

As f'he Year Book went to press. Southeastern's highly efficient Savages were in first place in the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference, with seven victories and no defeats.

The 195 1-52 cagers of Coach Sullivan had defeoted every member of the OCC and seemed headed fo r onother conference t itle. Their season's record showed fifteen wins and only five defeats. They won the consolation championship in the Sunshine Tournament at Portales, New Mexico. Immediately afterward, they won nine con­secutive games.

This Savage team is ranked a s one of the school's best. Its roste r lists eight gradu­ating seniors and a host of underclassmen who more thon live up to the high stMdards demMded by Sullivan-coached teams.

It would be 11lmost impossible to nome the team's most valuable player, as they all shared in the glory at one time or onothe.r. The most enjoyable victory of the sea­son was the Savages' 56-40 conquest of arch-rival East C entro! of Ada. It was the most lopsided gome between these two t eams in the past eight yel.lrs.

Southeastern was far ahead of the conference in defense with a 45.4 average.

Clarence Dyer, Savage tennis coach, has enjoyed great 'uccess w1th his teams here ot Southeastern. His netmen won the O~lahomo Collegiate conference in 1947, finished second in 1948, and won the crown again 'n 1949, 1950, and 1951.

Coach Dyer, who is a lso Associate Professor of Industrial Arts hos brought much honor and d istincfon to Southeastern State Col1ege.

Perhaps the least recognized, yet most successful, sport on Southeastern's compus is tennis.

At the present time, the Savage netmen hove gone through thirty-three consecu­tive duel m"tches without a single defeot. In 195 1, they tied Texas A&M and SM U and defeated Houston University, Missouri Valley champ, TCU ond Oklahoma Uni­versity's big seven champions.

Since 194?, they have won the Oklohom" Collegi.,te conference four times and finished second once. In last ye"r's conference tournament the Savag~s were com­pletely dominant. Harlowe Binning, Sovage number one man, defeated onother Savage. Rick Green, to win the OCC singles championship. Green and Binning teamed together and defeated teammates Bruce Bloke and Kenneth Lewis for the doubles championship.

In the spring of 1949 Pi Kappa Sigma social sorority put on the first production of the Follies on the Southeastern campus. Each year since the Follies have been an eager­ly-awaited event. With the assistance of Phi Sigma Epsilon social fraternity, the Pi Kaps have managed to present a near-professional production of songs, dances, and skits each spring.

INTERCOLLEGIATE RODEO CLUB

The INTERCOLLEGIATE RODEO CLUB was organized on the Southeastern Campus February 14, 1950. The purpose of the club is to promote participation in the intercollegiate rodeo, and build interest in rodeo functions for students interested in such activities.

The club will participate in Collegiate Rodeos against other rodeo teams throughout the Southwest. Last year's rodeo, sponsored by the club, was very successful. Plans for a bigger and better one are underway this year.

HELL HOUNDS

The 1951-52 school year at Southeastern saw the reorganization of the HELL HOUNDS, pep club. Revival of the group gave a decided lift to school spirit at the college. The Hell Hounds, who promptly got colorful new jackets and chose a queen, set as their goals promotion of college spirit, support of all athletic events, and all­round service to Southeastern.

Charter members of the newly-organized group are Morris Lewis, President; Bill Embree, Vice President; Lloyd Gibbs Secretary-Treasurer; Bill Glaze, Pledge Master; Philip McCarley, Charles Skinner, A. J. McCarty, AI Melson, Bob Johnson, and Ken­neth Dickinson.

POOR BOYS

Soon after the start of the 1951-52 school year, a group of freshmen decided that they would start a . fraternity of their own-and one that would fit their pocketbooks. They wanted the congenial companionship of fraternity life and an opportunity to band together for service to the college; but they turned thumbs down on expensive entertainment and excessive dues. The POOR BOYS ordered sweaters and other emblems, chose a queen to take part in Homecom­ing, and had a busy year in general. Although they were contacted by a num­ber of national groups, asking them to affiliate, when the yearbook went to press the Poor Boys were still rugged individualists.
