Leadership:Points for all Lodge Officers to practice

By CHARLES E. DEVINEActivities Committee Member

Stop for just a minute and think about your Lodge.

Can you remember some Exalted Rulers or Officers who

performed their office really well? What about the ones

who struggled and did not complete everything as they

should have. Do you remember why they were

ineffective? Chances are they did not embrace one or

points of leadership that many Elks wish their Lodge

Officers knew:

Recognize othersWe all enjoy being recognized. It does not have to be

expensive or elaborate. Print a Member’s name in the Lodge

Bulletin for all to see. Give him or her a certificate for

helping with a project. The appreciation shown to the ones

you’ve recognized will make them want to he the first to

volunteer on the next project and possibly to work even

harder.

Plan, plan, planThe more planning done before becoming an Officer

means more success during your term. The confidence

gained going through the various Lodge Offices, climbing the

ranks of leadership and learning from your predecessor, will

show as you lead the Lodge through your year. No one else

can claim the victory or the agony of defeat. The buck stops

with you. It is also a year of tremendous personal growth.

Enjoy the ride.

Never take sidesListen to all sides of a controversy. Remain openminded on

all subjects, even if you do not agree. One of your biggest

assets shouls be your ability to work with people.

Find passion pointsAn Officer who takes the time to find out an individual's

success. Every person has a hot spot that he or she desires to

express or work toward. If you can determine what that is

then you can channel that into your committees, and that

Member is more 1ikely to follow your lead and make sure

that his or her projects and goals are successful. Be

supportive and compassionate to the Members in their

personal endeavors, and they will support you and the Lodge.

Always remember that they are volunteers, too.

ATTENTION MEMBERSWe are planning to utilize Electronic Mail to

deliver the Elks Tail to our members that have an E-

Mail Address. This will save the Lodge approx-

imately $1.00 per member each month in printing

costs and postage, plus the labor of preparation for

mailing. If you have a new E-Mail address notify us

so we can make sure your record is correct. My

address is [email protected].

Please be part of the solution and not part

of the problem

Here it is, August, and the

calender year is more than half

over and summer vacation is just

about over.

We had our 4th of July BBQ

and boy was it good. We had a

full house and it was nice to see all

the members and their guests come

and enjoy a great meal and the

“Pig races” that followed. Thanks

to the Elks of the Year, PER's and

volunteers for a great job.

Our ER will have returned from Reno where the annual

Elks Convention was held and I'm sure it was a good and

productive trip.

It may seem early to some, but I'm going to bring up the

subject (again) of YOU becoming an Officer of this Lodge.

It's been difficult getting Officers the last few years, and

frankly, I don't really understand why. It's rewarding, you get

to meet members of other Lodges and make new friends while

promoting Elkdom.

It's important to get an officer corp. as early as possible.

This helps to transition the member to what his/her duties

entail. We've had some problems the last couple of years in

that a member comes in late, then is not prepared for what is

required. By coming in early, no one is caught unaware, plus

it gives us a head start for Ritual Contest, which is really a

terrific experience and is rich in Elk tradition, and makes for

a smoother operation all around. So please give it serious

consideration. Without Officers there can't be a Lodge.

Fraternally,

Fred J. Duffey, Leading Knight

Greetings fellow members,

I am really happy about the

topic for this month. Unfortu-

nately is isn’t Mother’s Day,

Father’s Day, Thanksgiving,

Christmas, Easter or any of those

inspiring events. I thought I was

onto something though so in

looking for an inspiring August

topic - I “googled it”. Apparently

the first Sunday of August

celebrates “Sisters Day”. That

being said, it is also “National Catfish Month” and “National

Eye Exam” Month. I really didn’t want my sisters to have to

compete with Catfish Month anyhow.

I wanted to talk about celebrating your membership this

month. I was surprised when I went on the National Elks web

site and found that we are actually one of the larger Lodges in

California. We have over 900 members, I was pretty

impressed. I was under the impression that we were pretty

small. I went to a meeting last month where the officers and

trustees outnumbered the members. 1 think there were 10

attending that evening. I was aware that attendance at

meetings was down but since I am still learning things that a

lot of you are already well aware of. I tend to have to process

them and get used to it.

My message this month is just come and be part of

something with the Elks. Let this spark a reminder this month

to bring your family in to a dinner one night, stop by for

lunch, volunteer to participate in something - and even better

... Come to our Elks meetings!

Have a great month and give your sister a call!

I helped with the Flower

Festival float this year. Many

people came together to finish

the float and some stayed until

the wee hours of the morning. I

love working on projects like

that because it gives me an

opportunity to get to know other

members of the Lodge better

and hopefully them me. The

task of glueing to the float

thousands of flower blooms is mind numbing and

tedious. It seemed like a good idea to strike up a

conversation with the person next to me to help pass the

time. After all, Brotherly Love is the foundation of the

Elks saying, " Elks share, Elks care", and how better to

show we care then to take an interest in a fellow

member? I began to see them in a different light as we

shared our life experiences as we worked toward a

common goal of finishing the float. I feel like I benefitted

a great deal from the experience. I feel the warm glow of

Brotherly Love when I think back to that evening and the

time I shared. I encourage every Elk to get involved and

make memories of your own. Come to a meeting and

step up, there is a function just over the horizon.

Elsewhere in this issue of the

Elks Tale is an article on ENF

Grants. The Lodge is in need of a

Grant Coordinator to handle

these grants. All applications are

done on- line. If you are inter-

ested in helping in coordinating

or preparing these grants please

let the Exalted Ruler or the

Lodge Secretary know. These

grants can be very rewarding to our Lodge and community.

A big Thank you to all our members who are recruiting

new members. With your help we will again be a plus

number on memberships for the year. We need new or

reinstated members to keep this Lodge open.

Reminder August - starts a two (2) months program

whereby members who have been dropped can be

reinstated for one (1) dollar, plus prorated dues for the year.

This is a special program, approved in our By-Laws, to help

recruit members who have dropped their membership in

the past. If you know someone who dropped their mem-

bership ask them if they would like to rejoin our Lodge.

Any questions, contact the Secretary’s office, 736-8866.

The Flower Festival is over and our Lodge float won

the Sweepstakes Award for best float in the parade. I don’t

have a list of names of those who helped, but you know who

you are.

Also a round of applause to the Trustees and River

Bottom Boys for their efforts in paving the Lodge parking

lot. It is a large project that is being done as funds are

available. If you would like to donate to this project contact

the Lodge office.

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July Festivities and

meal. A big Thank you to all who helped put this on, Elks

of the Year, Lodge Officers, PER’s and kitchen crew.

Without all of this help we would not be able to have these

kinds of Elks activity. The food was great and if you missed

it you missed a great time and some great pig races.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES

BIRTHDAY DINNERS will be served on the 4th Tuesday of the Month

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer

so far.

I only have a couple updates, so here it is. There

will be NO soccer shoot this year. I have been having

problems getting a committee to help. There is always

a lot of volunteers to help on the day of the event, but

it’s the planning and preparation that I need help with.

Last year, because I was unable to hand out flyers at the

games and at the AYSO opening ceremonies, we only

had six (6) participants. There were several ads that

ran, as well as all the posters put up in businesses

around town, but it wasn’t enough. It was great for the

kids because they all won, and went home with the Elks

Soccer Balls as gifts from the Lodge. I know the kids and

their families really enjoy the event, but the work is the

same for 6 or 60 participants. I hope “we” can turn this

around for next year to be a successful event.

A big Thanks to Jerry Hogan and the Elks of the Year.

Jerry has been selling opportunity drawing tickets

during Monday night burgers and because of this we

will have enough money to order dictionaries again this

year for all the 3rd graders in Lompoc! Thank you to all

of you who come to burger night and support the ticket

sales.

Food sales at Monday night Bingo have been going

okay. The food sold by Youth Activities goes to support

the “Student of the Month/Year” program. I am

thankful for the faithful supporters of the Hot Dog sales.

(even those that come from the member’s side, just to

buy a hot dog). I hope to be adding more variety to the

menu in the upcoming month.

Well, that’s it. See you in the Lodge.

Tarry Hetzel, Youth Activities Chairman.

Only three couples were able to make this month’s

campout to the Santa Barbara Elks. But we still had fun!!!

There was shopping at Trader Joe’s, World Market, and the

Apple Store. A day at Hendry’s Beach was warm and fun for

the dogs, too; but we could have passed on the beach tar! We

dined at the Golf Course and Outback, and had a really

scrumptious feast of Lamb Shanks and Orange Roughy at the

Friday Night Cookout at the Elks which was very reasonably

priced, too!

Tripoley was played outside in front of our rigs. A

policeman patroled through and asked if we were gambling.

We all held up our hands in surrender as we laughed and

affirmed his sentiment! On Saturday we visited the Santa

Barbara County Courthouse. It is breathtaking in style and

the 360° view from the clock tower was awesome! Tours are

free and give a history of Santa Barbara roots and the

courthouse. This and the Santa Barbara Mission are highly

recommended destinations!!!

Friday found us dancing the night away and one couple

even closed down the Elks! Many Santa Barbara Elk

members came by our table and made us feel welcomed at

their Lodge. What an awesome group of members they have!!

Santa Barbara Elks are a very active Lodge! They have

groups that bowl, golf, and camp. There’s a Grounds Crew

and a Highway Litter Crew, and even a Walking Group that

meets three times a week to walk to music in the Lodge. They

offered a Father’s Day Brunch for $10, and there’s the

Upcoming Car Show and 4th of July Celebration; also a Bar

Flys trip is in the making, and Bingo is offered every week!

The Fitness Facility offers a Spa with Whirlpool, professional

weights and aerobic equipment for only $72 per year! If you

ever get a chance to visit, you will not be disappointed in the

camaraderie offered there!

All Elk members and their guests are invited and

welcome to join us for any campout.

All campouts are organized by Trail Bosses

and those scheduled are:

August 3, BBQ (NO campout) at St. Mary’s, Lompoc -

September 13-14, Avila/Pismo Beach KOA

Leo & Marian Aragon 736-6773/757-8896

Attention all Committee Chairpersons and Lodge Mem-

bers, here is a list of Elks National Foundation grants that

are available to the Lodge. All it takes to get a grant is to

apply online and meet the criteria for that grant.

The Elks National Foundation Community Investments

Program Grant Components.

1. Beacon Grant–For ongoing, Elks-led charitable

activities, $2000 grants available to every Lodge.

2. Gratitude Grants–For addressing local needs, $2000

grants available to Lodges that meet the GER’s per

capita goal (we have not met that goal yet, goal,

$4.65 per member.

3. Promise Grants–For Youth activities, $2000 grants

available to the first 500 Lodges that apply with

qualifying projects.

4. Impact Grants–For large scale, Elks-run service

projects, Competitive grants of up to $10,000 for

projects with significant Elk involvement and com-

munity presence

5. Lodge Assistance Grants–For harnessing local

support. Enable local businesses to donate to a

specific Lodge charitable project through a restricted

monetary gift to ENF.

As the Lodge plans the best ways to serve our

community, it’s important to keep the following six broad

categories in mind. ENF grants must be charitable in nature

and our projects must fall under one of these categories.

Relieve the poor, distressed or underprivileged.

Advance education or science, but not through

scholarships.

 Lessen the burden of government.

 Lessen neighborhood tensions.

 Eliminate prejudice and discrimination.

 Combat juvenile delinquency.

The Exalted Ruler is in need of an ENF Grants

Coordinator to manage these grants. If you are interested,

please contact the Exalted Ruler or Lodge Secretary

ER Terry Gurley, Phil Hager, James Martin,

Michael Runkle, Jr. and James Walker

Thank you to all members who donated

with their dues to the Major Project.

Remember to bring in your Purple Pig to the Lodge

office and receive your tax deduction receipt and

help our children with disabilities.

Remember“A coin a day so they’ll walk talk, see and play”

NOTICE

Well, we are over halfway through 2013. I guess the

older we get the faster time seems to go.

Summer is here and I know a lot of you go on

vacation, but don’t forget our monthly Veteran’s Push

from the Convalescent Care Center every third Friday of

the month for their Fish & Chips Luncheon. There is

more Veterans in the Center now so I do need extra help

to continue this great program.

Aluminum cans are coming in great. Last month I

was without a truck and Jerry Hogan helped me get the

cans to recycle. So thank you Jerry. As I have said many

times this program would not be where it is today

without the wonderful help I get from all of you.

Vet Push this month will be on the 16th of August, so

take a couple of hours out of your day and help me. It

might just make your day.

Fraternally
