Dear Members, 

As the Founder and Chief Organiser of the Club I keep ge ng good wishes and congratulatory messages from one and all for the growth of GHAC. I am thankful to all the Co‐organisers, Assistant, Event and Trainee organisers with whose support GHAC is growing by leaps and bounds.  These dedicated and passionate men and women, who give their  me and efforts in ge ng 

trained, facilita ng and conduc ng the adventure events, are significantly contribu ng to the con nuous growth of GHAC.  

We are a 5600‐member strong team today, and completed over 800 adventure events. We are aiming high and our ambi ons include the dream to be the best adventure club in the whole of India.  That is easier said than done. To make that possible, we need to con nuously evaluate the way we do things and strive to improve upon them. We take sugges ons from everyone, and make changes in the way we do things. We appreciate our 

members for their con nued feedback, trust and support. 

At GHAC, we always try to raise the adventure quo ent by adding new adventure ac vi es and raising the bar in exis ng ac vi es. Our team led by Organiser Naveen has raised the bar by doing the Khalandikal Himalayan trek, which is close to 6000 metres, the highest and toughest  ll date in the history of GHAC.  Another team is going again for the 6th  me to the Everest base camp and this  me in the autumn season when the temperatures              touch minus 25 degrees Celsius.  

Events like Rock Climbing, including Bouldering, Trad Climbing, Rappelling and Jumaring, are seeing good par cipa on from the members. Bouldering has reached new heights with our climbers doing V4 ‐ V6 levels of difficulty. We have explored many places and some mes, we wonder if we ever will be able to complete all the rocks around us. Co‐organisers Sujay & Ranga and Organiser Priyank, have been working passionately on spreading the climbing fever in the city and their efforts are bearing fruit. Sujay had to relocate to USA.  The climbing team is sad about the reloca on of their prime mentor who has worked hard in ge ng the team to a good level of climbing. We will be represen ng Hyderabad at the Bouldering Cup, to be held in Bangalore, early next year. Few of our organizers are also taking up mountaineering courses with Nehru

The Adventurers

It is yet another feather in the cap for GHAC.  Till date, GHAC had conducted five high profile treks to the 5324 meter Everest Base Camp.  A five‐member GHAC team, led by Naveen Ka‐nakadandi, including Siva‐kumar Natarajan, Sa sh Pavan, Karthik Prasanna and Deepak, decided to beat that record, with a trek to Kalindikhal Peak in Garhwal Himalayas.  Three members of the team reached the Kalindikhal Base at 5900 meters. Due to problems with crevasse and ava‐lanches, the team was not able to get to the Kalindikhal Pass, which is at 5970 me‐ters or to the peak at 6200 meters.

Dear GHACians, 

Thank you for your overwhelming response to our August issue of the Newsletter.  We also thank you for your valuable suggestions, which we will be including in the forthcoming issues of the 

Newsletter.  Please do not be disheartened if we are unable to include all your suggestions for obvious reasons.  Let that not discourage you from sending in your views.  

Mid‐August, we had reached a milestone of 5000 members in GHAC.  

We are happy to announce that the figure has increased by 10 percent and crossed the 5500 mark in September.   

The highlight  of September was the Kalindikhal Trek.  The adventurers from GHAC members ascended 5900 m of the 5970 m Kalindikhal, Garhwal, in the Himalayas.  It was unfortunate that they had to return without touching the peak due to the inclement weather.  This is the highest ascent by any GHAC team.   

The month saw some innovative meetups, raising the bar of the adventure quotient.  One such 

meetup was the Trek‐de‐Hyderabad: Jumbo Pack of Treks.   

A series of Outdoor Fitness Workouts were launched during the month.  Conducted across the city, Tuesday through Friday, these workouts are aimed at improving the physical & mental fitness of the members.  Fourteen such workouts were organized by the end of the month.   

Another first was the organizing of five Technical Bouldering meetups, in a single month.  

A record 78 meetups were organized in September. This is the first time, since the inception of GHAC, that so many treks have been organized in a single  month.  And we are smiling all the way.  It would not have been possible without you dear adventurers.   

With every passing month, the meetups are becoming more frequent and all the more challenging and innovative.  I am sure many more surprises are in store for us in the months to come.

Recognising the growing stature and importance of GHAC in promo ng adventure travel and ac vi es in Hyderabad, the AP Tourism website now lists GHAC on www.aptourism.in 

We will be conduc ng the Outdoor Leadership Course for Organisers on the 29th and 30th Oct 2011 and those of you who want to volunteer as organisers and get trained in skills required by a competent outdoor leader can join this workshop.

The Outdoor workshop sessions will be conducted by experienced and senior organisers,  especially by Col Rajeev Sharma who has been instrumental in impar ng training and raising the quality levels of all the outdoor leaders in GHAC.  

We have lot of upcoming adventure events like Trad climbing, White water ra ing, Paragliding, Scuba diving, Ocean Surfing, Sailing and Sky Diving.  

Now is  me to raise the bar higher and higher, both for adventure and safety at the same  me.

What would you like the world of your children to be? This is a ques on every parent should ask themselves. We have o en heard people say that we should provide a cleaner, less polluted world for the future genera on. 

Many of us from GHAC regularly go for trekking and other outdoor activities to various locations within the twin cities and other parts of the state. What we often notice and do not act on is the amount of litter that dot these spots which spoils the look and feel of these locations.  

A few months ago, we at GHAC decided to act and one of our first demonstrative works was at Durgam Cheruvu, on the occasion of World Environment Day.  The GHAC team did a good job by cleaning up a part of the lake and that was in a way our contribution to preserving and conserving mother‐nature. It was then we decided to go for our next clean up location – Ananthagiri.   

A second home to many of us, Ananthagiri hills and its environs has been a favourite meet up place for many of us. So after a few missed dates, we finally gathered up for a meetup on 20th August to do our due for Ananthagiri.  

A late meet up announcement meant a tepid response, but we did not want to give up our mission. The basic equipment for a clean‐up including gloves, garbage bags and other essentials were ready. And we were ready for the D day. We 

hired a bus and 16 of us were on our way to Ananthagiri. Stopping for breakfast, we imbibed the lovely weather as we made to our destination.  

We decided to complete the work in about three hours as clouds were gathering in the horizon. Clear areas were demarcated to GHAC volunteers and the students. A surprise package was two lovely kids Kavi and Nisha along with their mother Jen Mankoff, a Professor from Carnegie Mellon. Instead of 

covering a large area and diluting the effort, we decided to stick to a smaller area and do a better job of the clean‐up. Face masks and gloves were provided to the volunteers and they began the painstaking efforts of cleaning up their areas. Soon, the first of the litter began to emerge and they were stacked in small mounds along the walking track.  

The strategy was to collate litter into garbage bags and then carry them to a collection point near the Ananthagiri temple bus stop, from where the garbage collection vehicle of Vikarabad Municipality would cart it to dumping grounds. An overcast sky was suggesting a 

hint of rain and we had to work fast in ensuring that we wrapped up the effort in time. In a couple of hours, we had over 15 bags of litter filled up. The litter included plastic bottles, plates, glasses and snack packs among others. We avoided picking up glass bottles as the chances of getting injured were pretty high. The threat of rain forced us to speed up the work and by the time we called it a day, we had spent close to three hours at work. We met Mrs Aruna Bahaguna, DG of Police inside the forest and she appreciated the work being done.  

About 52 students from Mannan Engineering College helped us in this effort and their dedication deserves to be appreciated. We had an oath‐taking ceremony, in which participants promised to protect the environment and conserve nature. They later helped us in hauling up the litter bags to the main road for the municipal truck to pick it up. Later 

all the participants moved to an area near the view point where again they found garbage and litter which was collected and transported to the nearby dump.  

That done, we trooped into the

environs of what is called ‘poor 

man’s Ooty’. Till we have another

Team GHAC was called to assist in conduc ng Outdoor and Team Building events to the proba oners of 86th Founda on Course at Dr MCR HRD Ins tute of Human Re‐source Development, Hyderabad of the Civil Services. 

The 86th Founda on Course of Lal Bahadur Shastry Na onal Academy of Administra on (LBSNAA), Mus‐soorie is being run in parallel at Dr. MCR Human Resource Develop‐ment Ins tute of Andhra Pradesh.   

This Course is a ended by 179 pro‐ba oners from Indian Forest Ser‐vice and central civil services like Indian Revenue Service (IT),  Indian 

Revenue Ser‐vice (C&CE), Indian Defence Accounts Ser‐vices (IDAS), Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), Indian Sta s cal Ser‐vices (ISS), Indi‐an Economic Services (IES), etc.    

As a part of this ini a ve, Suresh Kocha l, Assistant Organizer, GHAC was invited to address the proba oners on the topic ‘Leadership Through Adventure’ 

on Tuesday 6th Septem‐ber 2011. The 40‐minute talk was well re‐ceived and the proba oners were mo vat‐ed to a level where they decided to form an Ad‐venture Club in the campus.  

The following Sunday, 30 of the pro‐ba oners did a rappelling event in the campus itself. Deepam Morparia and his team did a great job in ge ng the par cipants to get a feel of going down the rocks. At the end of it all the response was ‐ yeh dil maange more. 

A couple of Sundays later, on 18th September, the GHAC team led by Diyanat Ali and Deepam Morparia were back again at the ins tute this me with a host of ac vi es.  A 

Snake Awareness Session and Team Bonding / Building games were con‐ducted for the proba oners.   

The en re batch led by Dr MCR Ins ‐tute Director, Chandrasekhar Reddy, IFS turned up for all the ac vi es.

Kairalee Associa on, Alwal honoured Mr Ranjan Sood who has his roots in Alwal, Secunderabad  for his conquest of the Everest Base Camp in May 2011.

It was the month of May and I was ge ng terribly bored of wai ng for my joining date at an IT com‐pany. Having come from Pune a month ago, I was missing all my ac vi es there that kept me on my toes all day long. Li le did I know that Hyderabad, the city of opportuni es, had a lot to offer on weekends as well.  

It was while browsing through various clubs in the city, I came across GHAC, a not‐for‐profit organi‐za on that kept me engaged from the very first click on their site.  

The concept of Meetups seemed very interes ng and different. In fact, some of the places men oned there sounded exci ng as I was hearing about them for the first  me.  

A er scrolling through all the Meetups, I decided to join in for a trek at Am‐muguda on 5th June 2011.  My name went up in the wai ng list for this meetup as I was a li le late in my confirma on.  

I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it to the confirmed list or not. It was the morning of June 3rd and the first mail in my inbox read ‘Your status has been moved to confirmed.’ WOW….The day had indeed begun well and I was certainly not complaining.  

On the morning of the trek, I woke up very early and made my way to the venue right on  me. Am‐muguda being close to my house seemed conven‐ient for a first  me trek in Hyderabad. Minutes a er my reaching the trek spot, the other trekkers 

started coming in. A er a brief round of introduc‐ons, I began my much awaited trek.   

From rock climbing to chimney climbing to sliding down the rocks, I had started loving the rocks. Never ever had I experienced so many techniques of ad‐venture with the rocks. It was certainly a worthwhile experience. The enthusias c shu erbugs ensured that they did not miss out on any moment and kept their cameras ready throughout.  

A er 2 hours of trekking, it was  me to go back but with a promise to stay in touch and a end more 

meetups.  I had met all these people for the first me, yet it didn’t take any me to build a rapport 

with them. Together we all had spent our Sunday morning in something that each one of us was pas‐sionate about. The one word that had bonded all of us was ‘Adventure’. ‘Meetup’, was started in USA on 9th September 2001.   

Today on the same date, I feel very proud to be asso‐ciated with all such organi‐

za ons, which are definitely making their presence in the city. I wait for the weekends not because I’ll get to sleep more but for a new adventure wai ng for me. The 

re is excitement in some experiences and GHAC en‐sures you carry back home a lot of it whenever you go in for their Meetup. In short, Live the life you love. Love the life you live.

Melville Irwin, popularly known as Mel, is looked up by many members of GHAC as a walking encyclopaedia.  With GHAC since Aug 2010, he has organized several treks. 

Prefers organising treks around a water body, with climbing of some sort included and loves sharing his knowledge with co‐trekkers.  His most memorable trip with GHAC   ll date has been the corporate trek GHAC organized for his company.  As part of the trek, they were to cross a one‐foot stream.  What made it so memorable was that the one‐foot stream turned into a raging torrent due to a flash flood.   

"If not with GHAC, I would be a naturalist ge ng lost in some forest or the other and loving every minute of it", says Mel.   

Loves nature, art and animals with a profound interest in snakes, birds & marine life. A Project Manager at an MNC, Mel is also an Ta oo Ar st, and has created some wonderful ta oos.  His hobbies include wildlife, trekking, climbing, rappelling, photography and music (plays the guitar).  

Know your outdoor leader 

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, presented the Tenzing Norgay Na onal Ad‐venture Award for the year 2010 to recognize the achievements of persons in the fields of Adventure.  The following persons were selected for the Adventure Awards for the year 2010. 

Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu ‐ Land Adventure Cate‐gory 

Reena became the first Indian woman to ski 900 kms from the coast of Antarc ca to the South Pole. She did some high al tude trekking in the Pindari Valley, Milam Valley and Ralam Valley, while working as an instructor. She has been climbing extensively since1996. 

Mamta Sodha ‐ Land Adventure Category 

Mamta scaled Mount Everest in 2010, besides scaling Island Peak (20,589 feet), Shri Kanth Peak (20,422 feet), Mun Peak (16,000 feet) and Phawara Rang Peak (21,441 feet). She has also climbed Mount Everest Eco Expedi on  (29,038 feet) in Nepal. 

Dilip Donde ‐ Water Adventure Category 

Commander Dilip Donde has sailed Solo on INSV 

Mhadei, undertaking Solo circumnaviga on of the earth round the ‘Three Great Capes’ in 273 days, which is a significant and rare achievement. He is the first Indian to circumnavigate the earth solo, under sails and 175th person in the world to achieve this feat. 

Late Col. Balwant Singh Sandhu ‐ Life Time Achieve‐ment (Posthumously)  

Late Col Balwant Singh Sandhu’s was a life me devot‐ed to mountaineering, a highly ethical conduct and great leadership quali es. He had ac vely encouraged young people to the outdoor adventure. He was instru‐mental in introduc on of IMF Annual Alpine Style climbing camps and con nued to oversee them  ll the end. He had climbed and trekked for over 50 years in most ranges of the Himalayas, made the most number of first ascents of difficult peaks, including first ascent of Changabang (6870m) in Garhwal, Himalayas in 1974, and first ascent to Phawara Rang (6570) in Spi , HP in 1977. The Award was received by his wife Helga Sand‐hu. 

The Awards were presented by Her Excellency, the President of India, Smt Prathibha Devisingh Pa l, dur‐ing the awards ceremony held on August 29, 2011. 

Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award - 2010

Being an Organizer with Great Hyderabad Adventure Club is an honour, and with it comes a sense of au‐thority, along with an enormous amount of responsi‐bility. Over the last three years, GHAC has built up an envious record in training over 60 of its members and developing them into Outdoor trek leaders. The en re process of training, in technical and theory aspects, has been developed and honed by the senior GHAC team. 

The process starts with invi ng members to the GHAC leadership workshops. On enlis ng for the Course, the prospec ve Organizers are subjected to a round of interviews, to make sure that they are leadership ma‐terial, and commi ed to the cause of GHAC in sparing their  me & effort to organize adventure ac vi es. The selected ones are then invited to a two‐day long Outdoor Workshop, wherein they are imparted skills in various aspects of Outdoor skills, that will help them evolve into be er leaders.  

Moving from being a member to an Organizer in GHAC takes a tremendous amount of hard work. The two‐day workshop encompasses a range of training mod‐ules that are intertwined to provide comprehensive learning. Apart from inculca on into GHAC’s mission, vision and values, the inductees are also appraised about the necessary quali es of a trek leader. The two‐day workshop also inculcates in the leader to be, the necessary knowledge of map reading, night naviga‐on, first aid skills and survival techniques among oth‐

ers. All in all, it is the first step in chiselling a rough stone into a diamond. 

A B. Tech student at IIIT, Hyderabad, Mohit Kharb is a passionate and fun‐loving adventurer.  

With GHAC since 2010, he has organized 13 treks, the most memorable one being the one to Mahendragiri Summit. What made it memorable and chal‐lenging, was leading his group through a heavy downpour, in the night, with‐out any route or guide to provide direc on. 

"If not with GHAC, I would be ignorant about all the awesome places around Hyderabad, and would just be was ng my  me in the city life", says Mohit. A foodie, he loves cha ng, shopping, football, trekking, traveling, photography, cycling, cooking, outdoor sports, exploring places, extreme adventure sports and making new friends.  

He treasures friends.  Respects nature and dislikes "si ng in a room when the mausam is awesome".
