Haverhill Borough FC History & Pen Pics

Haverhill Borough were founded in the summer of 2011 under the name of Haverhill Sports Association. The club came into being when the New Croft facility was opened in Haverhill which allowed the opportunity for a club to groundshare with Haverhill Rovers FC. HSA took this opportunity with both hands and entered the Essex and Suffolk Border League (ESBL). After a few initial hiccups momentum was obtained and the club convincingly won the first division of the competition, gaining promotion to the Premier Division and senior status. On their way to the title HSA won an incredible 17 games on the trot and also amassed over 100 goals in the league cam-paign.

The following season the HSA entered the ESBL Premier Division, and were one of the early leaders of the league. While the league cup proved a disappointment, a 0-2 loss at White Notley in the first round, it was the FA Vase which served up a series of

giantkillings, starting in the Second Round Qualifying. The HSA travelled to Thurlow Nunn (Eastern Counties) Premier Division side Norwich United, a team playing two leagues above them, and despite all the odds pulled off a 1-0 victory. This was followed by wins in the First Round against Ipswich Wanderers (one league above) 3-2 AET, and then the result of the Second Round when they defeated Thurlow Nunn Premier Division later-to-be champions Dereham Town 2-1, with a Matt Clarke volley sealing the win in the 94th minute of normal time. The run sadly ended with a 3-4 defeat in the following round against Sussex-based Peacehaven & Telscombe; how-ever, the club’s success in the cup provided them with a springboard and, at the end of season 2012/13, they finished second in the Essex and Suffolk Border League Premier Division and were promoted to the Thurlow Nunn First Division.

The club’s first season at step 6 surpassed even the most optimistic supporter’s expectations; a few new signings preseason helped Borough towards an eventual 4th place finish, missing out on a third straight promotion by just two points. While sadly the FA Vase run was not repeated—a rematch against Norwich United, this time ending in a 1-4 defeat—success was had elsewhere, in particular with the newly-formed Reserves, who won the Cambridgeshire County 2A league.

Season 2014/15 saw the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, and defeat two sides from higher leagues—Barking, 1-0, and then Whitton United, 2-0—before eventually losing out to Ryman Premier side Leiston in the First Round Qualifying. The FA Vase again saw the Blues twice defeat higher-league opposition, while the side also reached the semi-finals of the First Division Knock-Out Cup. Martin Westcott also took over from Ben Cowl-ing as first team manager midway through the campaign, the latter moving to become club chairman. The Re-serves also had a season to remember, the highlight being a 1-0 victory at Lowestoft Town Reserves in the Suf-folk Senior Reserve Cup, while also reaching the semis of the Creake Charity Shield.

In 2015/16 the progress of the club continued, with the Reserves gaining promotion to the Kershaw Senior B league and the first team winning their first senior silverware, courtesy of a 5-0 victory over Stowmarket Town in the First Division Knock-Out Cup Final.

2016/2017 saw Borough promoted out of division 1 after a stunning run of form.. Winning 17 and drawing 1 of the last 20 fixtures including 10 consecutive victories ensured Westcott’s men achieved promotion on their final home game with a 13-1 drubbing of Leiston Reserves. Cup football also provided a distraction, as the team once again reached the semi final of the Suffolk Senior Cup, only to be defeated by Crane Sports.

2016/7 also saw the club move into their new 3G surroundings at the New Croft. The state of the art facility supports the whole community football agenda, with Borough pleased to play a part on a Saturday afternoon.

Following the resignation of Westcott, assistant Anthony Choat took the reins and the team battled to a respect-able 20th place in the league avoiding relegation, but being demoted at the end of the season due to the facilities at the Croft being unsuitable for step 5 football.

Choat stood down at the end of the season and the club appointed Scott Hiskey to become the first out of town manager in their history. Hiskey was previously manager at White Notley in the Border League.

ception in 2015. We are all very proud of all our individual and collective

achievements to date. The environment that our staff create for our young

players to develop is certainly unrivalled locally outside the professional

game. AFC Sudbury benefits from a state of the art facility however it also

benefits from a pool of staff that carefully plan and deliver high quality to its

ever growing player base.

The 16-19 Full-Time academy is the flagship operation in the player develop-

ment pathway that rests in-between our hugely successful Eastern Junior

Alliance section and our senior first team. The full-time programme is for the

two years that follow high school leaving age, we combine academic study

with professional football coaching and a high level games schedule. These

two years are highly intensive and are the power behind the success of our

player development.

We value highly our 13-16 Eastern Junior Alliance section that has seen play-

ers progress into the full-time academy and indeed onto the AFC Sudbury

first team as well as professional football clubs academies. The partnership

with Ipswich Town Football club mutually benefits this section.

We want to make the experience for all our players as enjoyable and re-

warding as possible and certainly one of the highlights is our overseas tours

ready in place for the 2019 USA Tour. The Eastern Junior Alliance have

toured Europe and again plans are already in place for two of the teams to

tour Europe 2019 These experiences are all part of the process of developing
