Thunder in the Northwoods:It’s Here:

Tomahawk Fall Ride

By Abigail BostwickSpecial for the Tomahawk Leader

The open road leads to the 33rd annual Tomahawk Fall Ride Sept. 11-14, 2014. Some 40,000 visitors are expected in the Northwoods for the event that raises money for one special cause – the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Riding for MDA, communityThe Tomahawk Fall Ride is the largest motorcycle

gathering in the state and one of the largest fundraisers for MDA in northern Wisconsin. The venue has raised more than $1.5 million for families living with neuromuscular diseases in Lincoln County since 1983, when organizers began donating to MDA. Monies raised during the Tomahawk Fall Ride provide care and research for clients within the area chapter, which includes clinics in Green Bay, Marshfield and Marquette, Mich. Who we’re riding for …About MDA

By Abigail BostwickSpecial for the Tomahawk Leader

Friends, old and new, converge on Tomahawk during the Fall Ride for camaraderie, motorcycles and one common goal: to fight against and find cures for muscular dystrophy.

The Ride’s longtime beneficiary is the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which has been manning events at SARA Park for several years now.

Last year, more than $130,000 was raised to benefit MDA through SARA Park and Harley-Davidson Open House events. Over the Ride’s entire history, well over $1.5 million has been brought in.

MDA organizers emphasize that all events held at SARA Park directly benefit MDA. They begin the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 11 and go through Saturday, Sept. 13. Consult the “Activity List” in this Guide for a complete list of MDA SARA Park events, details and times.

What do your dollars do? •MDA supports cutting-edge neuromuscular research. •MDA is the nation’s largest non-governmental funder of

scientific research seeking treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.

•MDA-supported researchers have discovered the genes underlying nearly all of the diseases in MDA’s program, and are at the forefront of therapy development for these devastating disorders.

•In 2010, MDA funded some 330 medical and scientific research teams around the world.

•Using a revolutionary gene-mapping technology, in 1986 MDA-supported researchers pinpointed the gene responsible for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This discovery launched a new era in scientific research for all diseases.

•MDA-funded basic research helped lead to the creation in 2006 of a lifesaving enzyme-replacement therapy for Pompe disease. Before this treatment, infants born with Pompe disease died within their first few years of life.

•MDA and the ALS Therapy Development Institute have launched the single largest drug discovery project in history for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Once again leading the pack during this year’s Thunder Parade Friday evening, Sept. 12 will be a group of participants experiencing the ride of their lives.

Now in the 12th year, the Tomahawk Lions Club and members of the Northern Lights Harley Owners’ Group (HOG), Harley Organization 5598 of Arbor Vitae, are teaming up to offer those who are visually impaired the opportunity to experience the rumble of the road on the back of motorcycles. part in leading the way during the 18-mile parade that snakes east of Tomahawk on scenic county roads before coming to an end in the downtown to kick off the start of the Friday night Street Dance.

Event organizers note the experience can be just as rewarding for those offering their back seats as it is for those catching a ride. For many of those taking part, the visually impaired ride has provided the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the open road and be part of an event that draws tens of thousands of riders to Tomahawk each fall. It was noted it is not uncommon to see tears in the eyes of participants following the conclusion of the much-anticipated event.

The experience is why the event started over a decade ago and why it still goes strong to this day. Kevin Koth, Tomahawk Lions president, said the organization is once again excited to offer the opportunity and further the mission of the Lions Club organization to improve the lives and offer new opportunities to those who are visually impaired.

In what has become a longstanding tradition of the Tomahawk Fall Ride, spectators line the Thunder Parade route to cheer on passing motorcyclists. Each year thousands of motorcyclists take part in the Thunder Parade, which is the largest organized ride of its kind during the four-day motorcycle rally.

Free concerts offered downtown following the conclusion of the ride keep the festivities going up until almost midnight. Bands perform on both the east and west end of downtown (West Wisconsin Avenue) both Friday and Saturday night of the Fall Ride.

Koth said seats are limited to take part in the visually impaired ride so early registration is appreciated. Participants need to provide their own transporation to and from the school and should begin arriving around 5 p.m. for the Thunder Parade, which departs at 6 p.m.

Along with the visually impaired, the opportunity to take part and help lead the pack during the Thunder Parade is open to anyone handicapped or those on Medicaid age 65 and older. Riders under the age of 18 must provide their own helmets.

For more information or to reserve a seat, contact Koth at 715-612-8124.

Those looking for a good time as well as the opportunity to purchase some great merchandise and eat some good food during this year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA will want to make sure to visit the city’s main drag.

Even before thousands of bikes rumble into the downtown following the culmination of the Thunder Parade Friday evening, Tomahawk’s main street will be the place to be. Along with the many mom-and-pop shops making up the downtown, countless merchandise and food vendors will be on hand to cater to Fall Ride-goers. Several taverns will entertain live music each day that culminates Friday and Saturday night with the annual Tomahawk Fall Ride Street Dances.

New this year, Dairyland Cycle Insurance is helping sponsor the bands performing on both the west and east ends of West Wisconsin Avenue. Dairyland will be selling Fall Ride T-shirts in the downtown and throughout the community in an effort to raise money for MDA, which will receive 100 percent of proceeds from sales.

Owner of the Liquor Store in downtown Tomahawk, Wendy Wagner, Fall Ride Committee member, said the goal in partnering with Dairyland is to grow the motorcycle rally in the years to come while helping raise a bunch of money for a good cause. Dairyland is also sponsoring Biker Billy at this year’s Fall Ride where he will serve as an MC at different events held around town.

The Liquor Store sponsors the Street Dance bands on the west end of West Wisconsin Avenue while The Rodeo Saloon and Pik’s Pub cover bands on the east end of

Efforts to grow the Tomahawk Fall Ride and raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) are getting a big boost thanks to a new sponsorship with Dairyland Cycle Insurance starting this year.

Based out of its parent company’s headquarters, Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point, Dairyland Cycle Insurance is excited to be teaming up with a long-established and well-known motorcycle rally taking place essentially right in their own backyard, said Carrie Feinen, Dairyland motorcycle marketing manager. She called the partnership the perfect fit.

“We are very excited to be taking part in this year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride,” Feinen said. “Being a motorcycle business located in central Wisconsin, we wanted a presence in the area and the Fall Ride is the perfect fit. Plus, we are very excited to be able to help in an important cause to raise

Win a new custom-painted Harley-Davidson

Benefits MDABy Abigail BostwickSpecial for the Tomahawk Leader

You could drive home a brand-new, custom-painted 2014 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic or start planning a vacation trip.

Each year, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) holds a raffle with a motorcycle as first place prize. The custom bike is donated by Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Tomahawk Operations.

Second prize is a destination vacation for two. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20, with all proceeds benefitting

the MDA. The raffle drawing will take place sometime during

the Head East Concert, Sept. 13 at SARA Park. One must be 18 years or older to purchase a ticket or claim the prize.

money for MDA.”In a big time effort to bolster MDA’s profits from

the 2014 Fall Ride, Dairyland is donating 100 percent of proceeds from Fall Ride T-Shirts it will have available at booths at Bubba’s Big Party and in downtown Tomahawk. Those making a donation to MDA will receive a free T-Shirt for supporting the cause.

As part of the sponsorship, Dairyland made funds available to help cover a portion of live entertainment at Bubba’s Big Party and at the downtown for the Friday and Saturday Street Dances. Billboards were put up promoting the Fall Ride in large market areas around the state, online promoting of the event is scheduled to increase in the coming years and press releases featuring the Fall Ride were sent out about this year’s rally. Through the partnership and additional promotions, it is anticipated the Fall Ride will continue to grow in years to come, which in turn will serve to benefit everybody.

“The more money we are able to raise as part of efforts to benefit MDA, the better,” Feinen said. “Any way we are able to help out we will be more than willing.”

Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Somo Avenue plant tourTomahawk, a city of just some 3,500, is home to two

•The Somo Avenue facility, with 212 employees, paints and ships components to the Vehicle Operations facilities located in York, Penn., and Kansas City, Mo., as well as direct to dealers. These parts are assembled on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Once again, the Tomahawk Police Department is being assisted by a number of additional area departments during the Fall Ride. Some of those helping patrol the downtown and area roads include the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office as well as officers from Merrill, Everest and the Wausau Police Departments. The Wisconsin State Patrol also brings in additional units and students from the Nicolet College Criminal Justice Club assist in the downtown.

Tomahawk Police Chief Al Elvins reminds everyone to have a plan in place in case they do have one too many while attending events. He suggested having a sober driver in place or someone who can provide a safe ride instead of taking the chance of riding under the influence.

“Be responsible,” Elvins said and added they want everyone to have a safe and memorable Fall Ride. “If you plan on drinking, find a sober person to give you a ride.”

The party continues to grow at

Bubba’s Big PartyBy Jed BuelowTomahawk Leader City [email protected]

With headline bands, a full lineup of Tomahawk Fall Ride entertainment and a growing number of diehard campers, Bubba’s Big Party at Nokomis Community Park continues to grow each year. And a large crowd is once again expected for a four-day party that gets underway Wednesday with early-bird free beer, bonfires and live music at the park located off County Road L in the town of Nokomis.

Longtime Fall Ride planner and Bubba’s Big Party event organizer, Bubba Troutman said despite the economy in recent years the big bash his family and a small army of helper’s host continues to grow. He said advanced ticket sales were going very strong leading up to the kickoff of the big party and this

year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride.“A lot of people really like the camping and look forward

to getting the same spots where they can meet up with friends each year. Many times it is the only time they see each other all year long,” Troutman said in noting over 2,000 campers set up camp at Nokomis Community Park each Fall Ride. “We like to have fun with the camping and provide tickets and trophies for things like the best campground lighting, vintage camper and best overall.”

Last year’s winning campsite came with their own wooden dance floor, DJ, jukebox, stocked bar and hot tub to boot. Bubba’s Big Party also awards trophies to campers with the best barbeque beef and chicken.

While the campground provides the perfect setting, the live music and all there is to see and do at Bubba’s Big Party is what draws the big daily crowds. Along with many merchandise and food vendors of all ethnicities on hand, the big party hosts a hotrod and custom car show, lawnmower and barstool races, fundraising pancake breakfasts put on by the Nokomis Fire Department, tradeshow and swap meet, worship services and much more.

New this year, the big party will also host sumo wrestling for people to take part in or to compete against the girls from the USA Pankration Team to help them raise funds to take part in the International Martial Arts Championship to be held later this year in Moscow, Russia.

Bubba’s Big Party is open to the public Friday and Saturday at no cost. Tickets can be purchased on a daily basis or for the entire event to watch the many bands including headliners perform. New this year, Dairyland Cycle Insurance is proudly serving as a sponsor for this year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride, sponsoring live music and helping raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

“We are very excited to be working with Dairyland to help raise money for a good cause,” Troutman said. “We are hoping to donate a lotta, lotta money this year as a result.”

Funds from the Dairyland Cycle Insurance sponsorship

have allowed Bubba’s Big Party to add to an already packed lineup of live entertainment planned at Nokomis Community Park. The widely popular band Vic Ferrari has been added to the list and will entertain audiences both Friday and Saturday evening under the big top.

Bubba’s Big Party is once again featuring headliners Friday and Saturday as well as additional returning crowd favorites like Tuck Pence, the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band Lukyn Skywyrd, Black Frog featuring Tommy Greywolf from Brooks and Dunn, and Black Knight are just a few of the several bands that will take the stage.

Bubba’s Big Party will feature headline bands Friday and Saturday night performing under the big top. The multi-platinum-selling country group Blackhawk takes the stage Friday to perform songs from their new album Brothers of the Southland released in 2014, as well as many classics like “Goodbye Says It All,” “Every Once in a While,” “I Sure Can Smell the Rain” and “That’s Just About Right,” Saturday night’s headliner features the southern and country rock band the Outlaws and their hits like “Hurry Sundown,” “There Goes Another Love Song” and “Green Grass and High Tides.”
