Aric T. Gorton, SuperintendentMark W. Albert, Senior Recreation Leader

A Message from the SupervisorDear Orangetown Residents:

Did you know that Orangetown has an amazing variety of recreation-al programs? It’s one of the reasons that I love living here. From golfcourses, soccer fields, playgrounds, and tennis courts to mountainforests and paved bike trails, Orangetown’s park system has it all.

Summer is one of the most exciting times of year in Orangetown’sparks. Under the leadership of Superintendent Aric Gorton, our Parks& Recreation Department has put together an outstanding set of programs for kids, teens, and adults!

Our two golf courses, the 27-hole Blue Hill and the 9-hole Broadacres, both now oper-ated successfully by Applied Golf, continue to draw faithful golf enthusiasts, while milesof trails and acres of open space call those seeking options for passive and active recre-ation.

Explore the Nike Site – formerly a Nike Hercules radar tracking station for the U.S. gov-ernment – offering hiking, open space, and scenic views from atop Clausland Mountain.Take a stroll along a stream in Pascack Brook Park, play tennis at Independence Park, orshoot some hoops at Veterans Memorial Park. Swing, slide and climb with your childrenin one of the many playgrounds throughout town.

One of the most visible and exciting additions to our parks system is the NYSDepartment of Transportation’s long-awaited work on Phase II of the Joseph B. ClarkeRail Trail. When completed, 1.25 miles will be added to the existing 2.5 mile trail, allow-ing residents to get from Blauvelt to Orangeburg, Sparkill, Palisades, Piermont,Grandview, South Nyack and Nyack on foot or on bike.

And don’t forget to enjoy the free summer concerts at Veteran’s Memorial Park – onceagain we have a great lineup of entertainment!

If you’re new to town, or haven’t yet explored all that our Parks & RecreationDepartment has to offer, we hope you’ll get outdoors, get moving, and visitOrangetown’s 26 town parks and open space areas this spring. Visiting a new park is agood way to explore a different part of Orangetown.

Have an idea for a new program you’d like the Town to offer – or a suggestion toimprove an existing program? Share your ideas by calling the Parks and RecreationDepartment at 359-6503 or emailing – [email protected].

Sincerely, Andy Stewart, Town Supervisor

Starting New at GolfSkyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes by teachingproper technique to refine essential skills of the game. Golf is a challenging andlifelong sport, so young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals of form, swinging, putting, and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks hasadopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system to its curriculum. SNAG utilizes aset of equipment designed for beginning golfers, including oversized plastic clubheads and “mini tennis balls” to help build confidence and to have fun. Developedby PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player;SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy and effectivetransition onto the golf course. No need to bring your own clubs--all equipment isprovided. We keep the instructor-to-camper ratio low, resulting in limited avail-ability. These programs fill up quickly.

SECRET AGENT LABCalling all agents! This camp is part forensics and part “spy science”. Step intothe shoes of a detective—uncover the science involved in evidence gatheringand analysis. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discoverwhat skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. They examine clues andget hot on the trail of a culprit, and then connect the dots using science to helpsolve a crime in a hands-on investigation. From edible messages and decodingclues, students will have the opportunity to check out some of the skills thatspies must master as they journey into the world of espionage. Take home proj-ects include an ultraviolet Fingerprint Finder kit, Spyglasses that let you secretlywatch people who are behind you, Spy-noculars, a Secret Code Breaker, and anInspecti-kit for evidence collection.

Appropriate for students entering grades 2 - 6

MAD MACHINES & CRAZY CONTRAPTIONS This inventor’s camp is designed by you—the Inventor! Each dayyou’ll be given a series of challenges which must be overcomeusing basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famousinventors and the most important thing of all – your mind. If youwere stranded on a desert island how would you survive? You will needto build shelter, find food and purify water, protect yourself and yourteammates from the elements and find a way off the island – or die trying (notreally). Journey to the future and examine the ultramodern inventions of the23rd century. Then design the future - today. "Create" mini-light sabers, “greenenergy”, and hovercraft. With a little bit of ingenuity you’ll construct catapultsand forts and then lay siege, fabricate a winning Egg Drop design, construct adancing robot. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90%perspiration…this camp is 100% fun!
