SOFTWARE AND SERVICES
Red Hat® OpenShift
Container Platform
Red Hat Consulting
LeShop.ch, one of Europe’s largest online retailers, focuses on its customer experience and
relies on a culture of relentless improvement — including testing new ideas — to achieve success.
When its legacy IT environment became too complex and inflexible to support this mission,
the company sought a more agile, scalable solution to support innovation. Using a DevOps-
based process, LeShop.ch developed and deployed a microservices-based architecture based
on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. The company can now use its new environment
and innovative DevOps processes to bring new services to market faster and easily scale its
application requirements to meet customer demand.
HEADQUARTERS
“We can deploy new applications quickly, but the real beauty is the flexibility: some
existing applications grow, others shrink. We can make those changes automatically with
one click, in a minute instead of a day.”

BUSINESS GOALS OUTGROW LEGACY I.T. ENVIRONMENT
LeShop.ch, part of the Migros retail group, is Switzerland’s leading online supermarket. Founded
in 1997, the company is a pioneer in online retail and currently serves more than 220,000 regular
customers, holding a 60% market share. The company attributes its success to its focus on
customer experience and a culture of relentless innovation. For example, LeShop.ch is testing
drive-through collection points, as well as a network of stations where customers can pick up
online orders.
“Online business accounts for slightly less than 2% of Switzerland’s total supermarket sales. We have
plenty of room for growth,” said Ivan Torreblanca, CIO of LeShop.ch. “Wherever the customer is, we
want to be. We’re not afraid of testing new ideas.”
LeShop.ch’s IT team seeks innovative ways to improve the customer experience by evolving the
company’s IT environment — such as adding new online shops and providing near real-time stock
information. The team aims to quickly develop continuous improvements from testing to production.
But LeShop.ch’s legacy IT environment became too complex and prone to risk, delaying innovation.
Applications were isolated into two environments — one client-facing and the other logistics-focused —
preventing the IT team from working on applications individually.
“The technology we had in place was aging and becoming unmanageable,” said Torreblanca. “We
wanted a more modular, agile architecture that would be less dependent on specific technology.
Our goal is to be able to deliver new, productive software every day, ultimately several times a day.”
CLOUD-BASED APPLICATION PLATFORM OFFERS GREATER FLEXIBILITY, SCALABILITY
To gain the agility and flexibility needed to meet business demands, LeShop.ch’s IT team decided
to develop a microservices-based application architecture. They researched several alternative
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions, including Cloud Foundry and Red Hat OpenShift Container
Platform, as well as the option of building an application platform in house using Docker. After this
analysis, LeShop.ch selected Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.
“We had the choice: do we build or do we buy? Buying Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform was
more affordable in terms of implementation and maintenance,” said Torreblanca.
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform provides a cloud-based application platform in a scal-
able, flexible deployment and runtime environment. Its deployment and integration capabilities let
LeShop.ch build applications and run them in a hybrid cloud architecture that spans the company’s
datacenter and public cloud.
To ensure a successful deployment, LeShop.ch engaged Red Hat Consulting to assist with deploy-
ment and ensure the company’s in-house IT team gained the skills needed to operate the solution
independently and meet the company’s high availability goals.
“We tested the setup by blacking out one of our datacenters to see if the applications kept running.
The Red Hat team sat with us and made recommendations,” said Raphael Anthamatten, head of
Infrastructure and Operations at LeShop.ch. “We were very happy with the level of support. It meant
we completed the project on time and on budget.”
LeShop.ch now has 36 applications running per domain, with four domains running across two
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform clusters.
“Our culture of innovation implies
taking risks. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform was pretty new when we chose it. Some might have seen this is as risky,
but we don’t fear that kind of risk. The bigger
fear would be things becoming static.”

NEW PLATFORM IMPROVES APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT
FASTER DEPLOYMENT
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform automates application platform provisioning and manage-
ment, helping LeShop.ch’s IT operations team more easily meet growing demand for new applica-
tion services. The fully configured application deployment and runtime environment lets developers
focus on building these new services instead of completing routine maintenance tasks. In addition,
using the new Red Hat solution with a DevOps approach accelerates application development and
delivery processes.
“To deploy a new application under the previous setup, with server building and load balancing, took
four days,” said Anthamatten. “With Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, everything is done
within one hour.”
As a result, delivery times have shortened from six weeks to four. “Progress will come when we
improve our software build processes,” said Torreblanca. “Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform
puts daily deliveries within reach.”
GREATER FLEXIBILITY AND SCALABILITY
Using Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform lets LeShop.ch scale its application environment
on demand to meet business needs.
“Clearly, we can deploy new applications quickly,” said Torreblanca. “But the real beauty is the
flexibility: some existing applications grow, others shrink. We can make those changes automatically
with one click, in a minute instead of a day.”
ACCESS TO COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION
LeShop.ch was an early adopter of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, but as the number of
users has increased, the OpenShift community has become a resource for the company to share
ideas and gain insight.
“The user community was small when we started, but Red Hat did a great job of introducing us to
other users,” said Anthamatten. “We’re the type of the business that likes to listen to new ways of
thinking. Red Hat and the community have been great at challenging us, which we appreciate.”
In addition, using Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform has helped the company further its cultural
evolution toward a DevOps philosophy where infrastructure and software work together, sharing
accountability rather than working in isolation in the new environment.
“Our dev engineers had to develop an OpenShift cartridge for the Play! Java™ framework. The
cartridge could have been considered as a piece of software serving the interest of the infrastruc-
ture side, which could have caused our devs to say ‘this is an infra problem.’ It just didn’t happen,”
said Torreblanca.
EXPERT GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT
Choosing to deploy Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform not only helped LeShop.ch unite with the
growing OpenShift community, but also take advantage of industry-leading expert support directly
from Red Hat Consulting.

Red Hat consultants completed initial installation of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform into
LeShop.ch’s integration environment. During this process, Red Hat’s experts shared necessary
knowledge with the company’s IT infrastructure and operations staff to help them maintain and
evolve the solution as independently as possible.
“As well as the knowledge, Red Hat provided our IT infrastructure and operations staff with all of
the scripts and configurations used during the installation. Access to those resources offered a
fast track to independence for us,” said Torreblanca.
CONTINUED EVOLUTION SUPPORTS CULTURE OF INNOVATION
Using Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform will help LeShop.ch continue to support its culture
of innovation, not only by helping the company work to create and improve services but also by
helping its employees interact with an expanded network of users, partners, and customers.
“Our culture of innovation implies taking risks. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform was pretty
new when we chose it. Some might have seen this is as risky, but we don’t fear that kind of risk.
The bigger fear would be things becoming static,” said Torreblanca.
