The offerings were:

• presentations or gifts to God …

• … made under a variety of circumstances …

• … and they all cost the offerer something of value in the process.

Offerer had to be ceremonially clean (e.g. Lev chs. 11 to 15)

before offering.

Animal was brought to the Sanctuary, and into the court/courtyard (1:1-3).

Animal was inspected for blemishes (1:3).

Offerer placed his hand on the animal’s head (1:4).

Offerer killed the animal by slitting its neck (1:5a).

Priest would capture the animal’s blood in a receptacle, and sprinkle it on various parts of the altar.

Animal was usually skinned, and cut into portions (1:6,8). The whole animal or portions were washed (1:9).

The portions were placed on the altar and burnt up (1:8,9).

Note: Each particular kind of offering had variations on some steps of this procedure. This is a guide to the sort of things which took place most frequently.
