MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Now in its 34th year, the Lakefront Art Festival attracts thousands of shoppers and art enthusiasts to Michigan City’s

lakefront Washington Park, and artists are currently being sought to participate in this year’s event set for Aug. 15 and 16.

This high-quality, juried event draws repeat visitors from Chicago, South Bend and Northwest Indiana, as well as Michigan’s nearby Harbor Country communities. Patrons to the festival include second home-owners in the nearby beach communities.

In 2014, more than 4,000 people, as well as visitors from all over Michiana, attended the festival. A major fundraiser for LCA, the festival is overseen by arts pro-fessionals with friendly and helpful staff and volunteers who are committed to making it a success. More than $30,000 is budgeted to market the event through partner-ships that span radio, TV, print and outdoor media. Proceeds benefit LCA exhibits, outreach, and education.

The deadline to apply is March 31, and the application fee is $45.

Artists must apply online through Zapplication. Categories accepted include: two-dimensional art, fine

craft, jewelry, photography, sculptural objects, and wear-able art.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance by April 24. The Lakefront Art Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CDT) Aug. 15 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT) Aug. 16 on the lakefront in Washington Park in Michigan City.

Just over 100 exhibitors will be accepted into the fes-tival and there will be $3,000 in cash prizes awarded to participating artists.

About Lubeznik Center for the ArtsLubeznik Center for the Arts is located at 101 W.

Second St., at the lakefront in Michigan City, Indiana. Gallery weekday hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT). Weekend hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CDT). For more information please visit www.lubeznikcenter.org or call 219-874-4900.

Bluegrass band returns to The LiveryTrout Steak Revival debuting new album

Call to artists for Lakefront Art FestivalApplication deadline is March 21

By AMBROSIA [email protected]

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Music lov-ers of all ages are in

for a treat as one of Colorado’s most popular bluegrass bands returns to The Livery April 10.

Trout Steak Revival is an award-winning band popular for heartfelt musi-cianship, intricately woven harmonies and lyrics that transcend generations.

With Travis McNamera on banjo, Casey Houlihan on bass, Will Koster on guitar and dobro, Steven Foltz on mandolin and gui-tar and Bevin Foley on fiddle, the indie-folk-grass band is fully equipped for a full, powerful sound.

In the five years the group has been together, Trout Steak Revival has received no shortage of accolades, including taking first place in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition and writing the soundtrack for an Emmy award-winning short web-based documen-tary titled “Great Ingredients.”

Foley, who plays fiddle

and sings for the band, said the members of Trout Steak Revival are excited to play at the Benton Harbor venue again.

“The Livery has great people and a really great staff, and an amazing sound system,” Foley said. “We had a really great show with a really awesome

audience last time we were there. It was cool because it was multi-generational. There were people dancing in their 20s and 30s, and an older sit-down crowd. It was cool because everyone was having a great time.”

Patrons attending the concert will be among the first to be able to purchase

the band’s newest album, Brighter Every Day. Though the band has released two albums in the

past, this is the first full-length studio album the band has produced.

Trout Steak Revival, a Colorado-based indie-folk-grass band, will play at The Livery April 10.

contains 11 original songs contributed by the band members, who all act as songwriters, vocalists and instrumentalists.

“This is our first time working with a profession-al studio, working with a producer and working with someone who did all the mixing and mastering for us,” Foley said. “It’s been really nice to work with some really quality people to put out the best possible product.”

Foley and her band mates invite everyone to join them for a fun night at The Livery beginning at 8 p.m.

“I think the folk music genre is really good at bringing people together,” she said. “We try to write songs that are positive, about traveling or that talk about life getting better. It’s a feel-good experience.”

Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased by visiting The Livery’s web-site, liverybrew.com.

Cass Area Artists issue call for makers

CASSOPOLIS — A Cassopolis organization is seeking artists from surround-ing areas for an art fair to be offered this summer.

High quality art for the discerning buyer is the goal of Diamond in the Rough, a July 4th art show sponsored by the Cass Area Artists, a Michiana group dedicated to the arts.

The show will be at the Lowe Center in Cassopolis near Diamond Lake, and will appeal to the summer residents of the many lakes and towns in the Cass County area who will be anxious for an outing before evening fireworks start.

Artists may apply to the juried show by viewing the website at www.cassareaartist.com. Questions can be addressed to the show chairman at [email protected]

or by calling 269-476-1384.

Ginger-licious smoothieWhen you’re pub-

licly into health foods, there’s

certain things it’s assumed that you like. Ginger, beets, kombucha, greens, the list goes on.

To me, all of these foods have an acquired taste. Even those of us who grew up in fairly healthy homes were not raised on what’s now considered a diet rich in super foods.

The palate and mind have to adjust to new fla-vors much like they have to adjust to heat, texture or anything unfamiliar.

Ginger is the perfect example of this for me. While I can eat the hottest hot pepper and barely bat an eye, the smallest amount of fresh ginger could ruin any dish or juice. I’ve always liked it, but to me, the distinct flavor over-powers everything else it was supposed to accent.

Even as recently as a year and a half ago, I was asking for fresh juices, “easy on the ginger.” Now, this seems completely ridic-ulous; bring on the ginger!

I’ve certainly used fresh ginger in home cooking, but it really wasn’t until last summer that I started using it regularly.

My friend Isabel was in town visiting from California and we were spending a lot time cooking together. She went to the store while I was at work and bought so much fresh ginger that we used it in dish and smoothie after dish and smoothie until it was gone.

My tolerance and desire for fresh ginger has grown exponentially since then.

With my sensitive diges-tive system, I’m really grateful my palate has grown to love and accept this powerful root. Now I

cut off giant chunks, chop them up and toss them into smoothies or stir-fries.

I guess my point is that food is a lot like anything else in life: what you’re used to isn’t always the best for you, the first time you try something you probably won’t love it, and an open mind can lead to a happiness you never thought possible.

All of that being said, I really just want to share this green smoothie recipe with you. I came up with a great little twist on my basic staple breakfast drink by tossing in tons of ginger

and extra fruit. This will add a pep to your step, aid in digestion during spring cleansings, and help keep colds at bay in Spring’s yo-yo weather.

When I started writing a wine column seven

years ago there was no intention of getting into the wine tour business. But there is a desire among many to travel to wine country with all of the arrangements taken care of by an insider.

While I won’t quite claim insider status just yet, my first trip of 2014 treated my eight guests to fabulous food, accommo-dations, and wine tasting with owners and wine-makers.

The 2015 trip runs June 15-20, or five nights and four full days. Drink & Eat Oregon is designed for anyone with a wine inter-est. We’ll be drinking some of the best Pinot Noir along with Oregon’s signature Pinot Gris and emerging light-bodied Chardonnays.

Here is how the trip works. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to get to Portland, Oregon. A room will be reserved for each couple at a major down-town hotel. We begin with a reception Monday night June 15 and then take off for the Willamette Valley the next morning. Once you arrive in Portland all expenses are covered by the trip fee until the trip ends Saturday morning, June 20.

Again, all expenses, lodging, transportation, meals, wine tasting are covered by the registration fee. The only thing not covered is the wine partic-ipants might purchase. That’s made easy, too! You can have wine shipped home by the winery or join a wine club. Additionally, I cover the shipping costs, and all the handling, of one case of wine for each

couple on the trip. You can buy a bottle or two here and there and your regis-tration will cover the cost of having it delivered to your door.

Last year we visited Lange Estate, Winderlea, Domaine Drouhin, Vidon, Alexana, Saffron Fields, and Hawk’s View Cellars. We dined at McMinnville’s iconic Nick’s Italian Café and Recipe in Newberg.

Additionally, we take a break from all the wine tasting on Thursday and drive the stunning

Columbia River Gorge. If you’ve never seen it, you are missing one of the most beautiful spots in the United States.

The cost per person is $2,600, double occupancy. Just look for other similar trips and you’ll see it’s very reasonably priced for a boutique wine tour. As a matter of fact, when I checked search engines the closest thing I could find was a 3-day trip for $2,700. A trip similar this one was $3,800.

Besides the great tast-

Wine enthusiast shares passion with tours

ing experiences led by winemakers and owners, I’ll be along to answer questions and give some insight on Oregon wine

and the spots we visit. You can find more

information about the trip on my wine blog – www.howardhewit.net – at the
