Adding Weight to Create Space: The Yoga Sandbag
Gravity assisted movements in yoga is a series of postures
created on a flat surface with sand weights placed on precise places on the body. The benefits:
• Stabilizes the body
• Strengthens the central nervous system
• Grounds the student/teacher especially “vata” personalities
• Allows more blood and prana to move into the spine
• Boosts the immune system
• Power prop when used in restorative yoga (part of the sequence)
For example, in a pose called “Dandasana” or staff pose, we root the thighs with weights.
You may purchase sandbags before the workshop for 2 for $25. These are well made to last for decades. Place your Pre-order by July 18 with Theresa at [email protected] or call the school at 913-492-9594.
$45 in advance by 7/11, $60 at the door.

Health in Movement and In Stillness Modern Yoga is a practice of health in movement: in its therapeutic applications, asana and pranayama become the tools by which we address patterns of movement, breath and being that are at the root of chronic pain, limitation and even
disease. An extensively illustrated workbook, designed specifically for the training, will be provided as part of the training, as well as access to the slides used during the presentations.
An extensively illustrated workbook, designed specifically for the training, will be provided as part of the training, as well as access to the slides used during the presentations.
This reduces the burden of note-taking, and allows greater participation in this very experiential approach to Yoga as Therapy. (Please bring cameras and devices as you wish for pictures and recordings.)
Movement ‘Styles’ and Syndromes, the Challenges of Forward Bends & Twists
Fri., August 21, 9:00am – Noon
This very accessible session will bring awareness to our own style of movement, and how to adapt in our practice for greater freedom in movement as well as for overcoming pain syndromes. $85 single session (must be paid in advance).
The Four Corners and the ‘Core’ Fri., August 21, 2:30pm – 5:00pm
This practice — oriented in the direction of backbending — leaves you feeling strong and open, with much greater awareness of the connections between your hips and shoulders in daily life as well as in practice. $75 single session (must be paid in advance).
Pranayama, Meditation and Philosophy: The Deeper Yoga of Spaciousness: Nidra, Yoga in
Breath, Meditation and Relaxation Fri., August 21, 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Along with a discussion of the meaning and inspiration of this kind of practice as well as its place in our understanding of yoga, we will explore pranayama, yoga nidra and meditation from this perspective, for a relaxing and refreshing afternoon. $70 single session (must be paid in advance).
The Key to the Shoulders: The Collar Bones and the Subtleties of the Neck and Shoulders
in Asana and Breath Sat., August 22, 9:00am – 11:30am
This practice will be an exploration of a wide range of shoulder ‘openings’ that will be accessible to the ‘stiff-shouldered’ as well as stabilizing and integrating for the flexible. This will be put in the context of ‘movement syndromes’ linked to stiffness and pain in the neck and shoulders, and will explore the connections between neck actions and the shoulders, with a special eye to the role of the collar bone, known in many languages as the ‘key’ bone — as well as the role of rotations in the hands/wrists and forearms.
This will include preparations for inversions as well as modified inversions, and insights into neck tension and the breath/pranayama. $75 single session (must be paid in advance).
No Required Reading for this course: Doug will be providing a printed manual specifically designed for this course, included with your tuition.
These books by Doug Keller will be available for purchase onsite during the training only:
• Yoga as Therapy, Vol. 1 & 2 by Doug Keller • Refining the Breath by Doug Keller
Tuition: Full two days: weekend $250 before August 3 or $300 thereafter. Single Sessions priced a Marked $70 to $85 as listed. Must Reserve and pay in advance.
