ACE/DfE Annual Survey It is mid-September so that means it’s music survey time! Every year we are required to provide a host of data on music education in North Somerset to the DfE. ACE collect the data on their behalf. Once the data for the whole nation has been collected a report is produced on young people’s engagement with music making against which we can benchmark ourselves. In previous years we have produced a local report for you which compares the data for North Somerset with the national and regional averages, and many of you have found this really useful. Unfortunately the national report for 14-15 has still not been published, so we have been unable to produce our local comparator one for you. Last year the DfE announced that for the first time they were going to name individual Music Services and Hubs in the 14-15 report alongside their data, and we can only imagine that some of the more powerful but possibly less successful Hubs have objected, hence the extended delay. However, we still need to collect the data for 15-16 and submit it part way through October. You can download the form that each school needs to complete and return to the Music Service by the 7th October by clicking here. Most of the schools and settings are fabulous at providing us with the information we need, and we truly are grateful. You won’t be surprised to know it is the same few schools that have be chased every year. Thank you in advance! Hopefully we will get sight of the 14-15 report soon and be able to share it!

NSCYM Taster Day On Saturday the 17th September the NSCYM opened its doors, for any aspiring young musicians to come and have a go at playing in ensembles. 47 young people turned up to Backwell Secondary School at 9.15am, and had a fantastic time! The children played in a wind band, string orchestra, guitar group and finally all together in a massed orchestra. It was amazing what they achieved in a single morning, and everyone went away practically skipping… strangely that included the staff which was a bit odd! We really hope that having whetted their appetite for making music in ensembles those young musicians will now have the confidence to either return to an NSCYM ensemble on a regular basis, join a school group, Weston Youth Orchestra, or if a brass player one of the excellent Lions Brass for Youth Bands.

NSCYM Tour 2016 As soon as we all broke up for the summer at the end of July, a coach towing a matching trailer set off to Austria with 65 young musicians on board. Fortunately the coach was very nice because it was a rather long journey! Basing themselves just over an hour south of Saltzburg the three ensembles to which the young players belonged to set about impressing the locals, with not just how we do youth music making in North Somerset, but they were also fine ambassadors for the UK. A tremendous time was had by all. The concerts were wonderful and in some stunning venues, and the young people also got to visit Mozart’s birth place, descend into the bowels of a salt mine down long slides, cruise on a lake, ascend mountains by cable car and basically have a brilliant time. Families followed the musician’s exploits via social media and when the coach returned to Congresbury the players almost had to be dragged away by parents and carers, because they didn’t want the experience to end. It was an amazingly successful event. Well done to the young people that played and also huge thanks to the teachers that looked after everyone while away and particularly Roger Sansom who led the trip.

Open Schools Orchestras If you haven’t heard already you may be interested to know that two of our Special Schools now have their own orchestras and they will be performing in NSCYM concerts amongst other events later in the year. Anne Owen and Roger Sansom along with teachers from Ravenswood and Baytree schools have been undergoing training from Open Up Music. Using a mixture of traditional instruments, the Clarion music environment for iPad launched only last week and other tools that make music making accessible such as iGaze, young people who would never have thought they could access music making are now being enabled to do so. We will promote their performances during the year, and really would encourage you to come and support them. Solo Singer Opportunity: Perform ‘Walking in the Air’ from ‘The Snowman’ with the

2016-17 Singing, Music CPD & Enrichment Offer

The CPD opportunities on offer in 2016-17 have been carefully planned to support Primary Teachers in the areas they most often request. However, please note that we can deliver this to groups of teachers from clusters, federations or MAT’s if required rather than just to individual schools, keeping the cost to individual settings down.
