UPSTATE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Part of SUNY Upstate Medical University, Upstate University Hospital is the only academic medical center in Central New York. As a medical enterprise, Upstate serves 1.8 million people, covering one-third of the state. Upstate University Hospital is the hub of SUNY Upstate's clinical activities. It has a Level-I trauma center, offers the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, the region's only children’s hospital, and the Upstate Cancer Center, which provides services for cancer patients and includes the region’s only pediatric cancer care program. A short drive from the downtown campus, the Upstate University Hospital Community Campus offers a comprehensive range of services, including medical and surgical care, emergency services, intensive care, acute rehabilitation and inpatient psychiatric care. The Behavior Analysis StudiesMaster of Science Program atUpstate Medical UniversityCollege of Health Professions isdesigned to prepare students toapply data collection andanalysis to implement evidence-based treatments for individualswith autism.

The six-semester (24-month)program includes didacticinstruction and practicumexperience.

BENEFITS OF THEPROGRAMAfter graduation, behavioranalysts might be employed inmedical settings, schools,community-based programs, orprivate practice. The BehaviorAnalysis Studies Programprepares students with therequisite knowledge and clinicalskills to sit for certification as aBoard-Certified Behavior Analyst(BCBA) and a New York StateLicensed Behavior Analyst.

In New York State, BehaviorAnalysts are licensed health-careprofessionals who providetherapeutic services forindividuals with autism andrelated disorders. That workmight include conductingassessments of problem

behaviors or language deficits,developing treatments to reducebehavior and increase pro-socialbehavior, and caregiver training.An underlying feature of thisservice is a foundation in ascientist-practitioner model oftherapy development andservice delivery.

RESOURCES ANDSPECIALTIESThe program capitalizes onresources at SUNY UpstateMedical University and itsassociated hospitals, includingUpstate Golisano Children’sHospital.

The program also makes use ofUpstate Medical University’sexisting areas of specialization inDevelopmental Pediatrics, ChildPsychiatry and Social Work;disciplines that also factor intothe continuum of care forindividuals with autism andrelated disorders.

The majority of the off-campusexternal instruction will involvesupervised practicumexperiences and thesis research.

CAREER SNAPSHOTBehavior Analysts are licensedhealth-care professionals whoprovide therapeutic services for

individuals with autism andrelated disorders.

Behavior Analysts create plans tohelp children who, due to theirunderlying autism, refuse to eatas well as children who displaybehavior problems such asaggression, self-injury, andnoncompliance.

People who thrive in this fieldhave a strong drive to help othersand an interest in psychologyand autism.

PROGRAM STRENGTHS• Leadership experienced in

creating evidence-based plansfor the care, treatment andmeasurable improvement ofthose with autism and autism-related disorders.

• Small cohorts, withapproximately seven students tobe accepted.

• Academic medical centersetting allows Behavior AnalysisStudies students to learnalongside other graduate-leveldisciplines, including Medicine,Physical Therapy and Nursing.

• Students have a variety ofbackgrounds and experiencewith the special needscommunity.

CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIESAs the region’s largest facility forthe assessment and treatment ofchildren with autism, UpstateMedical University offers ampleopportunities for students tolearn and practice in real-worldsetting, guided by empatheticpractitioners.

LICENSES ANDACCREDITATIONThe program is reviewed andaccredited by the New York StateDepartment of Education.

OUTCOMESUpon completion of the entirecurriculum BAS Students will:

• Demonstrate effectivecommunication skills with avariety of stakeholders.

• Communicate effectively withconsumers, peers, faculty,other health care providers,patients, and family members.

• Prepare and deliver oralpresentations in front of anaudience of faculty and peers.

• Demonstrate professional,ethical, fiscally responsible andculturally competent practice.

• Demonstrate knowledge ofrelevant ethical guidelines and

demonstrate professionalbehaviors acrossenvironments.

• Demonstrate competency ofissues associated with andbest practices for maintainingconfidentiality and securerecord keeping.

• Examine, evaluate, diagnose,establish prognosis, provideintervention(s) and managetherapy services for individualswith autism and relateddisorders.

• Demonstrate competency indata collection and analysis,preference assessment,functional behavior assessment,and treatment development forautism and related disorders.

• Demonstrate competency inbasic principles and advancedconcepts that underlie clinicalpractice.

• Demonstrate ability to applygeneral treatment services toother settings (for example,home).

• Critically evaluate and applyevidence as a basis for practice,determine the effectiveness ofintervention(s), and demonstrate

a commitment to life-longlearning.

• Demonstrate competency inapplied, experiential learningenvironments.

• Demonstrate competency insingle-case experimentaldesigns and use of these toaffect positive behavior change.

• Fully complete an independentresearch project that isappropriate for scientificdissemination.
