PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
In St. Mark’s gospel for last Sunday, we read of the disciples’ profession of faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah. Jesus then went on immediately to give them His first prophecy concerning His sufferings and death: “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men and they will kill Him; and when He is killed, after three days He will rise.” This is the second prediction of His passion, death and resurrection. Although there could scarcely be any doubt in their minds as to what Jesus meant, yet we know that they did not grasp his meaning. His arrest and death on the cross came as a shattering blow to them. There were two reasons: firstly, their belief in a Messiah, glorious on this earth, who would subdue all enemies; and secondly, they thought Jesus would use the marvelous powers He had from God, proved by His miracles, to defend Himself against all enemies. The apostles were still very worldly-minded, they were full of hope that Christ would establish an earthly messianic kingdom, that He would not only free their holy land from the hated pagan rulers but that He would set up a worldwide empire for the people of God. Many of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament spoke of a worldwide kingdom; all nations would submit to the descendant of David, how worldly but how human they were! We must not forget though, that they were not yet really Christians, they needed the death and resurrection of Christ to make them what they became His true followers and loyal disciples. Today’s thought for each one of us is this: Christ became man, suf-fered and died as man, for our sake. By his resurrection He conquered death and opened heaven for us. Heaven is our true destiny. Loving God and our neighbor and carrying our cross is the only way to reach heaven.
Vatican City, 16 September 2015 (VIS) – After today's catechesis the Holy Father mentioned that this Saturday he will commence, with high expectations, his apostolic trip to Cuba and the United States of America. The main reason for the trip is the Eighth World Meeting of Families, which will take place in Philadelphia, but Francis will also visit the central headquarters of the United Nations to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the founding of this institu-tion. “Until then, I greet with affection the Cuban and American faithful who, guided by their pastors, are preparing themselves spiritually. I ask all to accompany me with prayer, invoking the light and the strength of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary Most Holy, patroness of Cuba as Our Lady of Charity del Cobre, and patroness of the United States as the Immaculate Conception”.
Reboot Live!: On Wednesday September 30th a high-energy 2 1/2 hour renewal event will take place in our parish. Chris Stefanick will bring a renewal in the mind and heart of many Catholics whose faith have been chill out. I invite you to bring along with you somebody whom you know their faith will be on fire once again. Chris Stefanick according to Archbishop Chaput of the Philadelphia Archdiocese says he is “one of the most engaging young defenders of the Christian faith on the scene today”. I hope to see you all at this event. More information is in “The Goods News” and flyers around the church. Blessings. Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

In recent years there has been a great increase in the number of adults who are joining the Catholic Church. RCIA is a program de-signed to help non-Catholics and non-practicing Catholics learn more about Catholicism through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times,
and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God as they consider becoming Catholic; although there is no obligation to join the Catholic Church. Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church RCIA program is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you are not yet sure whether you want to become Catholic, that’s ok! Join us and participate in the sessions as you prayerfully seek Our Lord in faith. Contact Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE at 388-2995 or by e-mail at [email protected]. The RCIA sessions begin Wed, Sept. 23rd at 6:00pm in Xavier Hall Room 203.
