Dear Readers,

I read a quote by William James which says, "Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create that fact". Isn't that true? how many examples do we see in our lives? How many people do we come across who prove that the mind is stronger than the body? That positivity DOES impact every sphere of our lives.

ICS celebrates Survivor's Day on the 2nd Saturday of February every year. As we slip into that month, we salute them and share some inspirational nuggets from them in this issue. They are a source of inspiration not only for people suffering from cancer, but others too. They have battled a dreaded disease and are still living a wonderful, active life. They show us that THERE IS LIFE AFTER CANCER.

ICS is a voluntary organisation. Our members get no bouquets for the work that they do, nor do they need them, but in this issue, I'd like to share the work that we're doing and the goals that we are aspiring to and the route we're taking to realise them.

This is the time for NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS!! It is important to have challenging but realistic goals. In the euphoria of a new year starting we make wild and impossible resolutions which are broken on Day 3, if not earlier! It is impossible to live without having failed in something. Should the fear of failure stop us from doing anything? I think if we can maintain a balance in our lives, stay healthy, plan each day and take it as it comes, use our time effectively and remember that it is ok to fail - so long as we don't give up - we're on the right track.

So here's wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful balanced year ahead!

Good health and happiness always,

Beeta Mehta

My name is Eicke Regul, I am a lawyer by profession, but nowadays work as a real estate developer in my hometown Bielefeld in north west Germany.

I just celebrated my 73rd birthday!

In 2002, I was diagnosed with thyroid gland cancer, and my thyroid glands were removed. Since then I am on regular medication. To stay fit, I ride my training bike at home or go on long bicycle rides outdoor 3 to 5 times a week.I walk as much as I can and prefer to take the stairs rather than elevators and walk rather than use a car!

My daughter is married into a Sikh family in New Delhi and her father in law, Mr Gurpreet Singh told me about Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, situated 15,000 feet above sea level in the Himalayan Ranges in Uttrakhand. For the last 10 years, I have been hiking up there. The first time I did the trip out of curiosity - I wanted to see the Gurudwara, and to prove to myself that I could still manage such a strenuous hike at such a height.

Until now, I never really prepare for the hike, but generally like to lead a healthy lifestyle and keep my heart pumping. I watch my weight, nap in the afternoons. I still go to office every day and overall like to be active.

Since my first hike, I have been drawn back to Hemkunt Sahib every year, by the beautiful landscape, the many friendly fellow hikers and worshipers, but mainly to prove to myself that I can still do it!!.

We participated in Conferences / Consultations

ICS has done a tremendous job in preventive screening and treating cervical pre- cancers.

One such example is 66 year old Husyari Devi, who came to a preventive screening camp at Bindapur DDA Flats, Uttam Nagar. After her check up at the camp, where her reports were positive, she was very reluctant to get further tests, but after much persuasion by the Counsellor of that area, Mr Deshraj Singh Raghav, ICS members and her family she agreed to go ahead. She was admitted in RGCI and invasive carcinoma was confirmed.

ICS adopted the patient and provided financial support for her treatment. Husyari Devi is now home and ICS will continue her follow up over the next 2 years.

Under this ICS has so far supported 36 children, whereby, Protein Supplements are given to child patients undergoing chemotherapy in AIIMS Pediatric Ward & Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya. (CNBC)

This is in addition to Home Cooked food being supplied to around 20 children undergoing treatment at AIIMS/ IRCH every Tuesday. The children are engaged in art & craft & laughter therapy.

Our mobile van, Asha Kiran, with doctors and technicians on board is widely used for screening camps. In the last 6 months, 84 Camps have been held where 3389 people have been screened. Out of these 268 had pre cancerous symptoms.Recently a camp was held at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College. University of Delhi.

A study undertaken by IIT student Aakash to photograph potentially malignant tumours of the mouth. The study was conducted on 134 cases by Dr Dipika Bumb & Dr Preet Dhillon (PHFI). This paper will be presented at the Oral Oncology Conference in Bangalore. (April 2017)

Other studies under preparation: Comparative Study of 250 NE women's health with counterparts in their home states.Prostrate Cancer Study- Demographics - lifestyle - & Symptoms that matter.

Global Health Strategies organized an International Consultation on Cervical Cancer & related issues on 16-18Oct 2016. ICS participated in strength and was presented with a silver salver in recognition of sustained excellence in Cancer Control.

ICS was invited to speak at an CII Intervention on Non Communicable Disease on 6th Oct 2016.

Brig S C SharmaICS was proud to have been invited to attend COP 7 - Conference of Parties 7.It brought together the WHO FCTC's 180 Parties, which included almost every country in the world as well as reg iona l economic in teg ra t ion organizations like the European Union, SEARO, Canadian, African etc.It was the first time that a COP meeting was being held in India. This signals a strong and generous commitment of the Govt of India to increase international co-operation and awareness of the WHO FCTC globally and especially in the WHO South East Asia Region. A 4 member team participated. It was a p u r e l y t e c h n i c a l a d v i s o r y o n international legislation, and a great learning experience for ICS.

Mrs Rekha Gulabani & Dr Priya Parmar attended the NGO Management Courses at SP Jain Management Institute, Mumbai, sponsored by Novartis. We thank Mr Prabhat Kumar Sinha for a valuable input in improving NGO functioning and hope that ICS reaps the benefit of this training.

ICS volunteers give talks on FM Gold 106.4 on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month between 1.05 to 1.20 pm. Do listen in.

On the 4th Feb 2017, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, ICS conducted a workshop for blind children at the National Association for Blind, Sec 5 ,R KPuram. The volunteers had a very interactive session for the students/residents of hostel of NAB .The intelligence and agile minds surprised even the seasoned volunteers of many such school talks.

We hope that this beginning is a continued affair by getting awareness IEC material in Braille. This way we will be able to spread the important message to so many "able "citizens. Cancer does not discriminate class, caste, color or physical ability.

May Their Souls Rest in Peace2016-2017 has been a cruel year for ICS Delhi. We lost stalwarts like Mrs Sita Paintal, Dr Mehrotra and Mr O P Nayar last year.

This year, on 1st January, Comde VS Laroiya passed away. A pillar of ICS who led by personal example and whose ever smiling face and vibrant personality will be missed by all.

All of them were blessed to pass into Eternal Bliss peacefully and gently. Our finest tribute to them will be to carry on their selfless service and nobility of being in our own small way.

Volunteers who suffered loss of loved ones include Mrs Ashu Chawla & Dr Poonam Chandra who lost their Fathers. Mrs Sudesh Raheja & Mrs Kiran Jaitley who lost their life partners. We offer them our deepest condolences. May they find strength and Grace to bear their loss.
