Prayer to St. Raphael Most glorious Prince, Archangel Raphael, be mindful of us and pray for us, here and in every place, to the son of God. O God, who gave your servant Tobias the holy archangel Raphael for a companion on his journey, grant that during our earthly pilgrimage we may always be protected by his watchful care and strengthened by his help. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Michael Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. See: http://www.ewtn.com/Devotionals/prayers/index.asp

“Magnificat Anima Mea Dominium” An Invitation to Join the Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholic men and women founded in Ireland in 1921. “The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent and

advancing the reign of Christ” (Legio Mariae: page 11). In Montgomery County there are twelve parishes with the presence of the Legion of Mary. Indeed, the Legion is an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor in each parish. Under the guidance of a spiritual director, the Legion performs spiritual works for the conversion, conservation and consolation of souls. Membership requires participation in a meeting once a

week for prayer, planning and discussion. Members do

two hours of work each week in pairs going out like the

apostles. Works include door-to-door evangelization,

parishioner visitation – sick and shut-ins, newly baptized

and many other works to meet the spiritual needs of the

parish community.

If you are you interested or if you need more information

please do not hesitate to contact the Montgomery

County Curia officers:

Attention CPAs and Tax Lawyers! This upcoming tax return season, Catholic Charities is managing an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law. CPAs and tax lawyers are needed to provide pro bono tax preparation for the working poor. If a return is filed, many of these workers will enjoy a sizeable IRS refund check due in large part to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC can help lift thousands of Washington area families out of poverty and keeps them out of poverty. Sadly, almost 20,000 low income residents of DC are not claiming the EITC, and thus are losing a potential financial resource for them. We will be providing training in January for all interested volunteers. Tax return preparation will take place on Saturdays from February 3 to April 14. To learn more about volunteering for Catholic Charities VITA Program, please contact Deacon Jim Shanahan by email: [email protected] or phone: 202-772-4310. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A Family Prayer for Advent O God our Father, in Jesus you call all Christian families and homes to be signs of living faith. By the light of the Holy Spirit, lead us to be thankful for the gift of faith, and by that gift may we grow in our relationship with Jesus, your Son, and be confident witnesses to Christian hope and joy to all we meet. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Christmas Gift Ideas If you are looking for religious articles as Christmas gifts, find items at www.zieglers.com. Also, check out The Catholic Family Connections Bible published by St. Mary’s Press.

Religious Education Calendar Religious Education classes continue through Tuesday, December 19. Find the full SRRE calendar at www.straphaels.org/religious-education (scroll down). This week children and teens are singing Christmas carols, sharing nativity re-enactments, and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After a two-week break, SRRE classes resume on Sunday, January 7.

Preparation for Sacraments The SRRE office oversees and coordinates sacrament preparation for all children ages 7-18. This includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Eucharist. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for information. If your child attends a Catholic school (other than SRS) and is in grade 2, 7 or 8, please complete the Catholic School Sacrament Registration form (Eucharist or Confirmation) and return it to the St. Raphael Religious Education office this week. Download the form from the Religious Education page of St. Raphael website or contact us to request a copy. Thanks!

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist This week, families with children preparing for First Communion in May 2018 are completing chapter 6 of God's Gift Reconciliation (for grades 2, 3, and 4) or chapter 7 of Reconciliation: Pardon and Peace (for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8). High schoolers are completing chapter 9 of Called to Be Catholic. All children are memorizing the Act of Contrition, one line per week.

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen

Those who missed the Listening Rite are invited to download the rite from the Religious Education webpage, complete the rite at home, then come to the RE office to receive a special gift.

First Penance will be celebrated on Saturday morning, January 20, or Tuesday evening, January 23. Families can choose either time. Children in grades 3 and up are invited to Confession Practice on Sunday, January 7, for 20-30 minutes, between 11:00 AM-1:00 PM in Room 7.

Confirmation Student Reminders

Confirmation I students (those in grade 7 or high school preparing for Confirmation in 2019) are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. The focus of these projects is the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. All Confirmation II students (those preparing for Confirmation in 2018) are participating in a retreat. Confirmation sponsor forms (sent from the pastor of the sponsor's current home parish) and saint projects are overdue to the SRRE office. Also due are any Confirmation service reflection papers and record sheets not turned in earlier this fall. Please submit these items this week.

Special Needs Faith Formation – Help Needed Special needs religious education is a blessing for the both the children and the catechists. We are actively seeking people with a background in special needs education to become part of our ministry. For more information about this joyful and enriching program, please contact Maria

Harrington at mariaharrington@ msn.com.

From Mass to Mission – The Liturgy of the Word SRRE students in grades 2-7 participate in monthly lessons on the Mass. By sharing these lessons, we hope that the entire St. Raphael Parish community might grow in understanding and love for the Eucharist. Responsorial Psalm: The First Reading is followed by a

short silence so we can think about what we just heard. Next, we sing the Responsorial Psalm. Its words come from the Book of Psalms in the Bible. The psalms are musical poems and are a prayer to God that involve our feelings – forgiveness, anger, sadness, joy, thankfulness, and praise.

First, the cantor sings the antiphon of the psalm. This is a short musical “sentence.” Repeat it after the cantor. The cantor then sings the verses and the people sing the antiphon after each verse. Afterward, there is a short moment of silence, as we get ready hear the Second Reading. 1Reprinted from From Mass to Mission: Understanding the

Mass and Its Significance for Our Christian Life by Joyce Donahue © 2016 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications 1800 933-1800. www.LTP.org. All rights reserved. Used with permission.

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for December The Elderly: That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations.

AFF Quote of the Week:

John the Baptist has been calling us to repentance, to metanoia, (in Greek). “It simply means going beyond the mind that you have. How our minds have been conditioned by the fallen world! How our expectations are shaped, stunted by what has gone before. It’s time, John is saying, for a new mind, a new set of eyes, a new kind of expectation.”
