CHAIRMAN’S REPORTThe children are back at school, the circus and fair have come and gone, and now we are in to dark nights. It has been good to see the children making full use of the playingfieldandplayareaovertheholidays, andwearegratefulthatplaykeptawayfrom the canal bank. Yes, I know Frampton is surrounded with water, but that does not mean that we ignore the possibilities of danger.Life at the Cadbury Hall appears to go on to temporary hold through the summer; with the exception of course of another very good summer league skittles and our Thursday morning health and exercise class; but now groups are coming back to start the autumn/winter term. Cafe Ping Pong has already started on Monday mornings at 10.00am, followed by the afternoon patchwork. But what does the Parish Council DO?Chapter 3Well,wehadtohaveanextrameetinginAugustwithnineplanningapplicationstolookat. Fortunately, none were really controversial, although we did register our dislike of plastic windows in historic properties. Some of us wonder why we seem to get more applications when lots of people are on holiday. We also talked about the Youth Football building which has got planning permission and the lack of any progress on Greycroft in The Street. ALTERNATIVES There are many alternatives to using sky lanterns

at events. These include:-

• Kites - ask guests to bring a kite, or even bet-

ter, make their own small, simple ones out of

recycled paper and sticks. Guests can write a

special message on them. Imagine a sky filled

with a hundred dancing kites, which can be

taken home as a keepsake.

• Balloons on strings - attached to long strings

and fixed to a marquee and given to children

when they leave.

• Indoor balloons - release a net of balloons in-

doors; balloon sculptures, relays or popping

can be popular.

• Lanterns hung on trees - light up pathways

with solar or battery-powered lanterns.

• Communal planting of a tree or shrub -

provides a long-term contribution to an area.

• Laser shows - only suitable at more remote

venues.

• Bubbles - especially effective when illuminated

with coloured lights.

• Glow sticks - always very popular with

children! HAZARDS continuedWHAT ARE THE HAZARDS?

1. Animal Welfare - Injury & Suffering:

This can arise, for example, by livestock eating

lantern parts accidentally chopped into animal

feed during harvest. Sharp parts can tear and

puncture an animalʼs throat and/or stomach

causing internal bleeding and potentially death.

Animals may also get caught up in fallen wire

frames and suffer serious injury and distress in

struggling to get free.

2. Fire:

Risk to buildings, dry standing crops, forestry,

hay/straw stacks, habitats, etc.

For example, a Sky Lantern was the cause of a

massive fire at a plastics recycling facility in

Smethwick. More than 200 fire fighters and

nearly 40 fire engines were needed to tackle the

fire, which sent a plume of smoke rising 2,000

metres (6,000ft) into the air.

3. Litter:

Wherever the depleted lanterns may fall, they

will inevitably litter the area in question.

4. Air Safety:

There is an air safety risk associated with

possible “ingestion” of parts into aircraft

engines.

What is a Sky Lantern?

Sky Lanterns (aka Chinese Lanterns) are

essentially small hot air balloons consisting of a

paper-covered wire, rope or bamboo frame and a

suspended open flame heat source. The heat

source lifts the lantern into the air where it can

then float for miles from the point of release.

Once the flame weakens, the lantern can begin to

fall back to earth.

WHAT ARE SKY LANTERNS?

Sky Lanterns have grown in popularity in recent

years and are released into the sky at night at

events such as weddings, festivals or

commemorative events. As it is impossible to

control where the released lanterns will eventually

land, they pose a number of potential hazards.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• Donʼt release sky lanterns yourself.

• Discourage other individuals and organisations

from using sky lanterns and raise awareness

of the issues.

• Consider alternatives to sky lanterns as set out

overleaf.

• Pick up any lantern debris that you come

across.

Our house & usAn ordinary story about a family and some of their homesThey(i.e.Londonfriends)calledus‘originals’.After10yearsorso,wewerestilltogetherand had managed to move to the country from our Islington 3 story terraced house. It wasagoodhomeinwhichtohaveourfirsttwochildren(AnnaandBenedict)andourfirstcat (Felix).Ourfriendsovertheroad(John&Jenny)movedtoGloucestershire in1975. We were inspired by them to follow suit. Having visited them, we decided to move out too. We viewed a number of houses, and then had a call from John. He had heard in the local pub that Elm Tree Cottage was on the market once more, having been under offerforthelastninemonths. We came to Glos once more, and found the house for us. It seemed at the start to have onlytwobedroomsbutthenwefoundthethird, anddecidedthiswasthehouse.OK–the roof needed re-thatching, there was stupendous mould emminating from a leaking water tank and the garden was a nettle and poppy meadow. But it had the basics, and we had youth and belief in ourselves, and each other, to make bold decisions. We bought thehouseandmovedin–September1976.Wehadspentthe longhotsummer inaCountyCouncilhousewhilstwaitingtomoveintoElmTree.Annastartedschoolthefollowing week. One of our lodgers bought our London house and another helped us hire a van to do the move. The piano had to stay in the front garden til we worked out how to get it in house.Thefirstthatcherwecontactedsaidhecouldn’ttakeontheworkforaboutayear.Irangback a year later, and he said it would be another year at least. Oh. The next thatcher did at least turn up, even if he did take a year, due to weekend alcohol consumption and havingtofitwindowsforweeksonendtokeephimselfinbeermoney.Usingfivetonsofwheat reed. he did a good job, and our house was dry and secure for another few yearsMeanwhile, we established ourselves as Frampton residents. How abouthavinganotherone?Wewereneargivingup–Bwasnearly40–butwereluckyenough to produce once more. Enter Thomas into our family. Then we suddenly discovered we had lived here for 40 years! Forty! It was only when we found out that we could no longer extend our mortgage, and would have to move out that we came to realise how much this home and the village had played in our lives. Our three children have grown up here, left, come back and are part of the fabric of our lives and of this house. We had been fortunate to manage re-thatching by hook and by crook. We could see that there might be a problem at this stage of our lives, but confidentlysailedonwithour“livefortheday”mantra. Had we foreseen the impact that the last year and a half has had on us both, we may have acted differently – butmaybe not.Forward planning has never been one of our strong suits. So here we are, in our seventies, about to move on to a new home. It will be a wrench, but I have nothing but gratitude for the part that Elm Tree and the village has played in our lives.Robin Wheeler

The Frampton SwansOne of the pleasures of living in Frampton, is being able to observe the wild life in and around the ponds on the Green. There are the usual moorhens, ducks and drakes, an occasional appearance of the very shy herons and of course the Swans. In all the years I have lived in Frampton, it has been a pleasure to watch the pair of swans, build a nest, lay a number of eggs, incubated them and hatch a number of young ones. In previous years, after a few weeks, the whole family appeared to decamp to the larger lake in the Park and were no longer to be seen around the Green, for the rest of that year.Howeverthisyearwasdifferent.Adultswansnormallypairforlife.Ourcobiseasytoidentify,duetohispronouncedlimp.Anunfortunatehangoverfromwhenhewasstruckbyacarseveralyearsago.Itismoredifficulttobesurethehenisthesameone,butitisprobablyso.Come the Spring, they invariably build a nest in roughly the same place, near the edge of the larger pond. On 12th May, they all hatched except one, which stubbornly refused to show signs of life and in fact disappeared after a few days. Of the six which hatched, one disappeared after several days and the remaining fivethrived. In previous years, after a few weeks, the whole family usually decamped to the lake in the Park andwerenotseenonTheGreenanymore.Thisyearwasdifferent.Oneaccountsuggestedthatthey trooped over to the lake but received a hostile reception and came back to The Green. Their decision was possibly reinforced by the fact that an excellent breakfast was to be had every day, courtesy of the previous owners of the Top Shop house and lattely from the new Top Shop itself.Gradually, the little family endeared itself to the local population and visitors alike. They quickly became possibly the most photographed family of swans in Gloucestershire. The hen proved to be an excellent mother and even when dad had trouble keeping up, led her little tribe all over the place, oftencharminglyinlineastern.Theywerecompletelyunfazedbypeople, withorwithoutdogs, cyclists, motor vehicles, the arrival of the Circus and even the Frampton Feast fairground activities.Grazingmainlyongrass,theyhavegrownsteadilytobecomealmostasbigastheirparents.TheirstubbylittlewingsarethelasttodevelopbutbytheendofAugust,hadputonaspurtwiththeirflightfeathersalmostfullygrown.Theirdullgreycolourisslowlybecomingwhiteasnewerfeatherscomethrough.Atthetimeofwriting,theycanfrequentlybeseenstretchingandexercisingtheirwingsand it isassumedthat this is inpreparationfor theirfirstflight.ThisapparentlyoccursduringSeptember,sobythetimeyoureadthis,theymaywellhaveflownaway.Eventhentheywillfacefurtherhazardsofcollisionswithpowerlinesandotherdangers.I am sure I am not alone in having taken great pleasure, from watching and photographing this year’sSwanfamily’sprogressthroughtheSummer.Iwishthemgoodluckfortheirfuture.Bryan Webster

Cycle Trip to the SommeInearlySeptember, fiveFramptonmatestookatriptotheSommeregionofNorthernFrance.Asmanyreaderswillknow, the infamousBattleofthe Somme took place 100 years ago during WW1, resulting in over a million casualties on all sides over 141 days. Our trip was planned around understanding a bit more about the history of the First World War in general, and the Battle of the Somme in particular. We spent a few days exploring the terrain on foot and bicycle. We were also able to make a local connection. Using the Frampton Remembers WW1 website (www.framptonremembersww1.org.uk), we learnt that a local man lost his life thereonhisveryfirstdayonthebattlefield.HisnamewasGeraldProutand he was originally from Parks Farm. “Look after the pennies”... Katy and her brother Freddie (no relations to anyone you might know!) just liked shopping! All their pocket money was spent on toys, comics and sweets. They never had any money left for holidays. Katy and Freddie needed to start saving! - So....one New Year on the 1st January....their Mum and Dad came up with a plan! - They gave the children a new money box and bright, new, shiny £1 coin to put in it! - They also promised that, if the £1 was still in the money box at the beginning of the February, they would ‘double it’ and give Katy and Freddie another £2.00. - And if the children managed to ‘save’ that as well.....then, every month (March, April, May etc.), Mum and Dad would double their ‘money box money’ each time !

Now Katy and Freddie weren’t silly....they saved all year! How much did it cost Mum and Dad?

[You may be surprised ....see if you can get someone to do this for you!]

“Changing words” A ‘word chain’... can you get from ‘mine’ (at the top) to ‘coal’ (at the bottom) by

changing just one letter each time.

m i n e Deep and damp

Spaced out words! Another of those lists with missing letters... only the vowels have been written in!

Can you complete the names of these metals?

i _ o _ _ o _ _ e _

a _ u _ i _ i u _ _ o _ _

Now.....how does that work? Another trick that you can play on Mum, Dad, Granny, Grandad, Uncle, Aunty - even your Teacher! Tell them you have ‘X-ray eyes’ and can see through things! {I like this - it uses numbers will make you look really clever!}

You need a box of matches / a pile of paper clips / coins or plastic counters /or something similar. Firstly draw 3 boxes on a piece of paper and label them “A”, “B” and “C”.

A

B

C

This is where you look the other way and get your ‘assistant’ involved!

Ask them (very nicely - we have to be polite!)....

1. To put 3 piles of matchsticks (or whatever) onto the squares but make sure each pile has the same number. [Piles of between 5 and 20 work well]

A * *

* * * * * * * * * *

B * * * * * * * * * * * *

C * * * * * * * * * * * *

2. Now move 3 items from pile A to Pile B and get rid of the rest of pile A. 3. Now take 3 items from pile C and add them to pile B 4. And now count what they have left in pile C and take that number away from pile B 5. Now ask your helper to split pile B into 2 separate piles any way they like. 6. Put your hand behind you, and ask the person to give you one of the piles and to keep the other one hidden in their hand

Turn back round because this is where you look really smart!

After pausing for a few seconds whilst staring at their hand, you say: “Ah! With my X-ray eyes, I can tell you how many pieces you still

have.....you have got.....”

[Well, you will need to have a sneaky look at the answer page to get this part of the trick!]

Croquet on a summer afternoonAugust 18th was indeed warm and pleasant, almost too hot at times and a small group (making up in quality what we lacked in quantity) met here at Wisma Mulia for an afternoon of croquet. We managed one game before tea and one after, and an extra game fitted in before ten. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves (much more fun that all that fuss down in Rio, and no one wrapped themselves in a Union Jack) and we did have a lovely tea with cucumber (home grown) sandwiches, scones (freshly made in the morning) jam and cream and some excellent homemade cake eaten in the shadow of the trees by the summer house.I hope we can meet again before the end of the season, but I have to talk to James, our site manager first because he has the vital job of preparing the lawn – he did a splendid job for us in August. So, if the idea of an afternoon of autumn croquet appeals to you please phone me on 740987 any level of experience – well perhaps not Olympic Gold – and I expect we’ll have a good tea if I talk nicely to our cook and her team.
