Phase II will include expanding the tee deck on hole #15, improvements to our practice fairway, (including adding mats to allow us to use the practice fairway earlier and later in the year, as well as during inclement weather, without damaging the turf) and continuing work on the bunkers that still have to be repaired. We also have $320,000.00 set aside in the Phase II budget which is subject to pending construction estimates on holes #3, #4 and #17 and available for contingencies. There are drainage problems on both holes #3 and #17 and especially in the case of hole #3 the bunkers are a large part of that problem. The Board is obtaining cost estimates to repair hole #4, including improving the quality of the fairways and the option of putting the new green on hole #4 into play. The Board will be presenting its proposal for hole #4 for consideration by the membership at the Annual Meeting in April of 2013. That day I talked to Dean Manz, whose crew had dealt with the challenges of a significant frost delay in the morning and a tournament in the afternoon. I spoke with Mike Kupchanko, Course Superintendent, who along with his crew was still working on the course at 6:30pm trying to get everything done before freeze-up notwithstanding that we have lost five crew members in the last couple of weeks. I walked into the Clubhouse and Executive Chef, Rob Schubert, was putting the finishing touches on meal preparations for the ladies dinner in the Spike Lounge while dealing with a wedding that was booked in the main dining room. The vision adopted for the Club, to be achieved by 2019, is that: “We enjoy provincial and national status as a premier country club offering pristine playing surfaces, the finest service, programs and amenities to our Members and their guests”. Thank you to everyone who attended the information meeting held on September 24, 2012. Greg

outlined the work that has been done on the Phase I strategic plan, which has now been completed, and the work

that is proposed to be done on Phase II in 2013 and 2014. Phase I was completed under budget. Phase II can be

completed without having to authorize any additional borrowings or additional assessments on the Members.

Phase II will include expanding the tee deck on hole #15, improvements to our practice fairway,

(including adding mats to allow us to use the practice fairway earlier and later in the year, as well as during

inclement weather, without damaging the turf) and continuing work on the bunkers that still have to be repaired.

We also have $320,000.00 set aside in the Phase II budget which is subject to pending construction estimates on

holes #3, #4 and #17 and available for contingencies. There are drainage problems on both holes #3 and #17

and especially in the case of hole #3 the bunkers are a large part of that problem. The Board is obtaining cost

estimates to repair hole #4, including improving the quality of the fairways and the option of putting the new

green on hole #4 into play. The Board will be presenting its proposal for hole #4 for consideration by the

membership at the Annual Meeting in April of 2013.

Congratulations to the winners and all of the participants in the Wascana Cup. One of the great

benefits of the Wascana Cup is that it allows Members to meet other Members, similar to the very successful

Couples League. Congratulations as well to the Frasier Cup team captained by Paul Wagner which was

successful in defending its title against the Royal Regina.

Finally, I want to extend thanks to some of the key people who keep our Club operating. Every year

there are challenges and this year has been no exception. At the same time, I am amazed at the effort and time

that is put in by many of our managers and employees as they work towards trying to attain our goals. Greg’s

presentation at the Annual Meeting illustrated how his hard work and commitment has resulted in the Club

moving in a positive direction, both financially and otherwise. I was golfing on Saturday, September 22nd.

Earlier in the day I was communicating with Greg as he was trying to put together the large information pack-

age that was shared at the Annual Meeting. That day I talked to Dean Manz, whose crew had dealt with the

challenges of a significant frost delay in the morning and a tournament in the afternoon. I spoke with Mike

Wascana Mixed League

September 13, 2012 Results

On Thursday Sep 13th, Wascana Mixed League members played the final game of our 2012 season.

This month’s theme was centred around the Food Bank, and players brought cans of food that were

incorporated into the evening’s game.

First, all the teams starting on a particular hole collaborated in creating

an obstacle course with the donated cans/boxes on the green. The

game followed as usual, but with the added challenge of having to putt

around the can obstacles. In the end, total putts on each green were tal-

lied, and top marks were given to the “most generous” set up, having

the lowest putt tally. From the 3 teams participating in this set up, the

team with the highest number of putts was the winner…..

Craig and Linda Nelson! They will enjoy gift certificates for Golf’s and Safeway. The Nelson’s are

surely the luckiest couple in Mixed League, since a random draw also selected them as winners of

the Door Prize. The other big winner was the Food Bank, which received the donated food, as well

as approximately $800 in cash donations from generous Mixed League participants.

Many thanks to Tafaline Wall of BMO for donating the night’s sponsored prizes.

Winners were: Jim and Deana Pageot, Brian and Carol Galon, Gord and Ann

Hamilton and Craig and Linda Nelson.

Wascana Mixed League plays for-fun 9 hole games (shotgun start) on selected Thursdays through-

out the summer. We are finished for this year, but if you’d like to be contacted about playing next

year, just email us at [email protected]. Registrations are welcome from teams and

singles. Thanks to everyone for a great season. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Chick-a-Dee Tournament

The Ladies of the Wascana Country Club held their 10th annual Chick-a-Dee Invitational Golf

Tournament on Thursday, August 2nd. We believe that this was the highlight of the season. It is

the most successful ladies’ tournament, as every year we have a full complement of 144 women

golfers from our club and around Saskatchewan that have their entry forms submitted well in

advance of the due date, plus many on the waiting list.

Once again we had a putting contest and raffle which raised $1689.00 for the Women’s Prairie

Cardiac Foundation.

This tournament would not be possible without the support of the Club, donations from Wascana

members, supporters in the community and the major sponsors. The committee would like to

A Message from the Team Tuesday Ladies As I write this article on a beautiful September morning, it is hard to believe that our golf season is draw-

ing to a close. The course looks great in its fall colours and perhaps there are still warm days ahead to

play those last few rounds.

The Team Tuesday group has had a very good year, averaging over 20 players each week. Weekly team

and closest to the pin winners have varied throughout the summer so the prize money has been spread

among the players. The annual Team Tuesday Challenge, sponsored by Ann Hamilton, was held on Sep-

tember 4th and turned into a real challenge with winds in the 70 km/hr range. Standing up on the greens

and some of the tee boxes was certainly difficult but the team that ”weathered the storm” best was Ann

Hamilton, Margaret Biffin, Jill Hilsden and Lee Anne Hicke (wild card). Trophy and awards presenta-

tions for all events will take place at our closing dinner on October 2nd.

It is my pleasure to announce that Carie Brandvold and Michelle Inglis will lead the Team Tuesday group

in 2013, sharing the duties as co-captains. On behalf of the Team Tuesday members, congratulations and

best wishes.

Message from the Wascana Ladies Club President Shirley Paterson

The Wascana Women’s Executive has been busy preparing for the 2013 golf season. Seems hard to believe considering this sea-

son is just winding-down and many are preparing to fly south for the winter. This Fall your Executive will be conducting a re-

view of the season; making some recommendations for the Women’s Club Championship in collaboration with the Club Profes-

sional and looking at some ideas to enhance the golf experience at the Wascana for women golfers. We would like to hear from

you and welcome any feedback. You can send your ideas to me directly or contact any one of the Section Captains.

Nominations:

As you are aware, this year we requested nominations for the role of Vice-President to include all women members rather than

limiting it to the Sections. At the close of nominations, one person had accepted. It is with great pleasure to announce that

Michelle Hunter will be the 2013 Vice- President along with your in-coming 2013 President Danica Love.

Congratulations to:

Club President Aaron Fox and General Manager, Greg Dukart on providing the members with the opportunity to review the

2012 golf season and plans for the new golf season. We are indeed fortunate to have such forward thinking leaders at the helm of

our club. I believe the Presentation will be available on-line and is a must read for all members.

Wascana Cup Team Judy Davis on their win. Team Danica Love is to be congratulated on keeping the momentum alive to the

Good Stuff!

9 Hole Women’s Captain Sharon Nattrass and her Executive on a very successful year. The closing Dinner was held on Sep-

tember 25th. Congratulations to the all the winners of the Birk’s Match Play event. Birks has been a sponsor of this event for 25

years. The 2012 9 Hole Champion is Pat Koyl. Thank you for the special invitation and for making me feel so special at this

event as well.

Capsule Comments!

An excerpt from a note I received from Past Club Champion Shirley Klein. After the Club Champions Luncheon:

It was a "Grand Affair" - enjoyed it very much. Hard to believe Jack and I have been gone for 23 years - we certainly enjoyed

our years at the Wascana and have many happy, fun memories.

One of the highlights of our era was being able to host the 11th Canadian Sr. Ladies Tournament at the Wascana - Millie

Lockwood suggested I become Chairman to which I replied "you are Vice-chairman - we had a wonderful committee - every-

one had their job description & no questions asked - except to Ruth Fraser our Treasurer - if she said "No" they had to find

some other way to get what they wanted. We were told by the Can. Executive it was the finest tournament they had ever

played in--quite an accolade to the members of the Club! The entire membership was more than helpful. Yes, those years

were wonderful - mind you, we were all much younger!!!

Shirley kindly donated photo albums prepared by Eleanor Gilewich prior to the Klein’s leaving Regina. 23 years ago.

Enjoy this great weather and from myself and the Wascana Women’s Executive, Happy Thanksgiving.

Cheers,

Shirley Paterson, Wascana Women’s Club President
