October update:
FOTH visit to EthiopiaFOTH visit to Ethiopia
Madge and Conrad’s plans to travel to the Hudad last week to install the solar pump have
unfortunately been postponed. The Ethiopian Government has declared a State of Emergency,
and the Australian government has issued a travel warning for Ethiopia in light of the political
unrest. Due to this the Board of FOTH has made the decision to put the trip on hold and closely
monitor the situation in Ethiopia.
In the meantime our project director will continue supervising the construction of the 2nd
reservoir and a temporary school, and continue with farmer training. We are very sad for the
Ethiopian people and hope this conflict will settle down soon.

We are proud to introduce to you our newly appointed administration officer, Tsehay! She is a
wonderful addition to our Team and is helping Sisay run our Lalibela office smoothly. This
allows Sisay to focus more on work at the hudad and other commitments. Over the last few
months he has worked tirelessly to coordinate the construction of the 3 km water pipeline, 3
spring capping structures and a 25,000 litre storage reservoir. He has also held several
workshops on vegetable growing and has helped the community plant over 6000 trees.

In the last academic year, the government supplied a teacher and the students had their lessons
in the open air. 55 students were registered for grade 1, and all passed to grade two. This year
all 55 students registered for grade 2 and 20 new students have registered for grade one.

“The vegetables, especially carrot, are growing well, while cabbage and tomato are not in good
condition because of the heavy winter rain and frost. The seedlings; Apple, ‘Gesho’, Tree
Lucerne and Schinus Molle are in good condition, both on the private land and communal land.
Farmers appreciate and care for the vegetables and seedlings.”

Year 7 students are raising money and awareness for our project. Students will be conducting a
school based fundraiser that will build momentum towards the final event, a 3 hour walk. This
walk aims to replicate the Hudad children’s journey each day to school. You can support the

The volunteer meeting scheduled for October 23 has been postponed until the situation in
Ethiopia improves.
