    Meet MontaHere We Go!

    DALLAS MAVERICKSFULL COURT PRESS

Monta Ellis first picked up a basketball when his older brother, who wasin middle school at the time, started playing. As one of three boys, Montagrew up with his grandparents in Mississippi through middle school andthen moved in with his mother, a single parent, his first year of high school. The neighborhood he lived in through those high school years was roughand had a negative impact on his family. That same brother who encouragedMonta to pick up a basketball became caught up in the pressures of the areain which he lived. During an especially bad incident, Monta saw that he hadto do everything to keep from going down this path. When he saw how theincident affected his mother, he vowed to do everything in his power to keep

her from feeling this way again.

From that point on, Basketball was my everydaylife, said Ellis. Going into the summer league before

his freshman year of high school, he told his bestfriend that he was going to go into the NBA rightafter his senior year. No matter what obstacles he

would have to overcome, Monta was determinedto reach this goal. He would watch NBA gameson TV then go outside and mimic all the moveshe saw players, like Michael Jordan and KobeBryant, making. He put in the time, work, andeffort to be the best he could be at this sport.

However, going into high school, he had neveractually played on an organized team. He hadto learn the meaning of teamwork through hiscoach at Lanier High School, Thomas Billups.

Also, Monta was one of the smallest playerson his team. Luckily this was nothing new for

Ellis, who was accustomed to playing with hisolder brother and older brothers friends. Hedidnt let his size stop him. I knew I had theknack for scoring the basketball, no matter

who the opponent is or how big or whateverthe case may be, said Monta. This proved to

be true once he hit the LHS court. He led theBulldogs to the state championships all fouryears and eventually achieved his goal; hewas drafted 40th overall by the Golden StateWarriors after graduation in 2005.

Monta played for the Warriors throughthe 2012 season. He was traded to theMilwaukee Bucks and played for them

during the 2012-13 season. He signed with theMavericks on July 23rd, 2013 after a Devin Harrisinjury. Ellis is ready to play for this team and eagerfor the season to start. Being here now is great,

because I know this is a winning organization. Itsalways great to have an organization that puts theteam first and everything else second. Being here, hopefully we can get to the winning part of things

and bring the title back here. I want to comein here with a great mindset, being opento and willing to do whats asked of me onthis team, said Monta.

We are about to tip off our 34th season

and we couldnt be more excited! It

seems as though we have been off

forever, but the truth is that the summer

has been extremely busy as youll see in the pages below.

Because we have been doing so much and because you

have been so loyal, we decided to share all of our activitywith you by launching Full Court Press, our monthly

newsletter. We hope youll enjoy reading through it,

taking advantage of some of the offers, and participating

    Summer Days MFFL

Dunking in DressesThe women of Dallas gathered at the American Airlines Center last month to learn more about their favorite sport! NBA 101 for Women took placefrom 6-10 p.m. on September 23rd. The participants were led around by Mavericks employees to nine different stations - working on their basketballgame with first Kaleb Canales and then Darrell Armstrong, learning about the managerial process with Donnie Nelson and Gersson Rosas in theirrespective offices, attaining a player development perspective with Tony Brown, hearing from Chuck Cooperstein, Mark Followill, and Earl Sneed

about broadcasting, getting coaching advice from Rick Carlisle, and having a Q&A with players Devin Harris and Wayne Ellington in the locker room.

Approximately 200 women registered for the 13th annual NBA 101 event. There were a variety of ages and basketball experience represented, but everybody came together for one common purpose - to celebrate their favorite team! Or maybe a few were there to celebrate their husbandsfavorite team. First time participant Elizabeth Brewner explained, I love that were learning more about basketball, but my husband is definitelyliving vicariously through [my daughter, Laura] and me right now. Most of the ladies were there solely for their own personal gain, though. This wasLora Lapinskis second year attending NBA 101. I came back because it was so cool meeting the players and seeing everybody win prizes. It wasjust fun, and I knew I would have to come back this year. The highlight of Loras night was solving Donnie Nelsons trivia question correctly - Whattwo players jerseys are hanging in the rafters of the American Airlines Center? Lora answered with one of the players names (Rolanda Blackman)and was given some new basketball sneakers (shown in a picture below), which she can use to show off some of her new skills. The night wrappedup with raffle prizes on the practice court. The women left with a new respect for the game, new friendships, and new memories with the Mavericks. For information on how you can get involved with next years NBA 101, click HERE.

Fantasy BasketballThe newest Mavericks players gathered in the locker room, suited up, and talked about what it means to play like a team on September 5th and 6th.Unfortunately, these certain players contracts lasted only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 2013 Mavs Fantasy Camp allowed participants to walk a day inDirks sneakers as they went through a morning of signing contracts, meeting coaches and staff, stretching, doing drills, and an afternoon of teamscrimmages and awards.

Each camp was limited to 32 players in order to secure maximum attention during drills and stations. These stations included exclusive time withHead Coach Rick Carlisle and new General Manager Gersson Rosas in their respective offices; they also spent time with Head Athletic TrainerCasey Smith and Equipment Manager Al Whitley in the training room and current Mavs Center Bernard James in the locker room. In his office,Coach Carlisle listed the teams goals on the whiteboard. It was a mission statement with simple messages, and he pointed out that everything onthe list is affirmative in order to eliminate negativity. After the stations were completed, Coach Carlisle explained that his favorite part of FantasyCamp is connecting with our fans and season ticket holders and building new relationships.

Connecting with the coaches was Andrea Ramirez favorite part of the program also. She was one of three females overall to participate and theonly female to participate on Day 2. When asked if it was intimidating to be the only woman, she said, Its not intimidating. Its just a game, justbasketball. Im out here enjoying being with other people who have the same love for the game. Terry Cox is one of those campers who loves thegame. About Fantasy Camp, he said, Its great to see the realness of these coaches and the humility. Its also a good way to support the Mavs.Terry, a Mavericks fan since the very beginning in 1980, went on to describe this day as, one of those days a grown up guy is able to be a kid. This

is one of those days that you check off your bucket l ist. For information on how you can get involved with next years Fantasy Camp, click HERE.

    Summer Days Dancers

    Making the Team

This past July, close to two hundred hopefuls gathered from around the country to see if they

had what it takes to become one of the best dancers on the planet, a Dallas Mavs Dancer. The first round of the auditions for the 2013-14 team began at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, the13th of July. The second and third rounds also took place on Saturday until around 2:30 p.m.Those who were selected to participate in the final round continued the audition process onSunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Of course, an impressive team like the Mavs Dancers must be selected by an equallyimpressive group of judges. Those who served as judges were Steve Letson, Lauren AnneJohnson, Melissa Weishaupt, Lesley Berry, Gina Calvert, Jay Betsill, Sharif Abboud, andDirector, Mallory Mills. After each round, the judges gathered in a conference room to decideon who would be cut and who would move on to the next round. For some, the decisionwas a unanimous yes or no, but for many others, there were long discussions based onperformance level, look, and dance ability.

One of the frontrunners was contestant and now Mavs Dancer Kristina Madsen. This was herfirst year auditioning for the DMD. After graduating from the University of Montana, whereshe was a member of the dance team, she decided to take the step to achieve her long-timegoal of dancing professionally in the NBA. On her favorite part of the audition process, shesaid, Ive gone to almost every prep class and met all these talented dancers. Its been niceto go through the process with others who want it just as badly.

While there was much excitement for the opportunity to fill one of the coveted positions, nerves were also part of the process. Twins Caroline and Claire Murphy were concernedabout not being chosen to join the team together. We want to be a package deal but realizethat we have to be judged individually, they said. Even Bonnie Ohlig, a four-year DMDveteran, admitted to having butterflies. Its always nerve-racking because youve come tolove being a member of the team, and if you dont get chosen, you know what you could lose.

The thirty-five that lasted through Sundays round attended Training Camp, and from there, the final twenty-two members were chosen and announced Thursday, July 18th.

    How the West Was One

Getting SchooledThe students at Thornton Elementary in Arlington Independent School District welcomed MavsMan, Champ, and emcee Joe Scrivner into theirschool on the morning of Friday, September 13th. Thornton is one of 104 schools in AISD that is opening its doors to the Mavericks mascots. With980 students and 106 faculty and staff watching, MavsMan, Champ, and Joe entertained while educating the students on how to make better

    choices.

The Making Better Choices program is the first tour the Mavericks mascots have ever done, but with performance veterans like Byron Arnold andTed Ovletrea, that was far from evident. All of the details from dancing with teachers to prize giveaways to tricks with the basketball were perfectlypolished. There was not a dull or unused moment during the entire hour. This is a little surprising since, no show is exactly the same, said Byron. The structure we have in place pretty much stays in form, but not every show is alike. Our best shows allow for spontaneity.

Every show may not be identical, but the message is always the same. A student can follow the MAVS acronym to help him or her make gooddecisions (shown below in the drawing by student Sara Bierner). Students left the assembly Motivated to reach their goals of getting a goodeducation, ready to use Activation through studying and paying attention in their classes, with the Vision to make a good education a realityby talking to those who have their college degrees or successful careers, and with a Solution to overcome challenges.

After the mascots and Joe quizzed students by handing out t-shirts and other prizes to the students who could name each piece of the acronym,

they had everybody from Thornton raise their right hands (some of the first graders raised their left) and recite this pledge:

I pledge to be respectful and a positive person. I will celebrate the differences between friends, family, teachers, and peers. I promise to be a rolemodel in the community, just like the Mavs.

    Summer Days Future Mavs

    FUNdumentals of Basketball

The Mavericks may not have played any games over the summer, butthe fans sure did! Approximately 2,500 kids attended eighteen MavsHoop Camp sessions over a period of ten weeks. This is an impressivenumber, because the camp originally started with just five camps and465 kids. Jim Guy, Community Basketball Manager, and Val Rhodes,Hoop Camp Head Coach, began this together and are still working as a

    team twenty years later.

Before starting this program, Jim traveled around to observe differentcamps in order to decide how the Mavericks should organize theirs. Onething he noticed about these other programs was that the children hada lot of down time. Because of this, he decided that the Mavs campswould aim to keep kids moving. As long as theyre doing things, theyrehaving more fun. They dont have to wait for their chance to play, saysGuy.

There are plenty of wonderful coaches provided in order to make thisgoal a reality. The ratio of campers to coaches is always less than 10 to 1.Of the staff of twenty-one, fourteen of them participated in this program

in grade school. By growing our own staff (Guy), it helps to ensurethat our future fan base is instilled with values that the Mavericks striveto uphold as an organization. That is, the program is not only to createplayers but also for participants to make new friends and learn aboutcamaraderie, leadership, and team building. What were teaching kidsis how to make friends...with a ball. Most come in as complete strangers.

Its interesting to see that theyre not comfortable at first with other kids.At the end of the week, though, they interact with each other a whole lotmore because this sport is built on teamwork, Jim says. Val says thathis favorite thing about coaching this camp is to see the kids have fun. They come in the first day nervous. By the end of the week, though, theynot only have improvement in their game but also realize they can havefun. He enjoys seeing the smiles on their faces and hearing thankyou at the end of the week from the campers and their parents.

As they approach the mark for an accumulative 50,000 participants,Jim and Vals passion for this program is evident and is the foundationfor Hoop Camps success. For information on how your child can getinvolved with next years Hoop Camps, click HERE.

After the closing ceremonies of the Prestonwood Hoop Camp, which included a group drill, therecognition of camp veterans, and the presentation of awards, I had the opportunity to ask some of the

kids what their favorite parts of camp were!My favorite part of camp was...

...the contests at the end.-Andrew English, 14

    ...meeting Devin Harris.-Madison Harris, 9

    ...the 5 on 5 games.-Maia Brown, 9, and Ava Botonis, 9

...getting out and playing with friends and teammates and gettingbetter as the week progressed.

For Your EntertainmentOn Saturday, July 27th, kids ages ten to seventeen wereinvited to the American Airlines Center for the very firstMavs Entertainment Camp. It was a fun-filled day whereparticipants had the choice of learning how to either DJ orperform in a drum line. Anthony Johnson, also known as DJWhiz, led the DJ portion of the camp. The biggest surprisewas how quickly students grasped the concepts to the pointwhere one parent was willing to purchase equipment to gettheir child started, he said. Some of the Mavs Drum Linemembers led the other side of the camp. Champ and the FoxSports Southwest Girls were even in attendance! Because ofits success, this is going to be an annual event. Color by Number

The worst thing anyone can do is challenge thisoffice. We are number one for a reason, and weplan on staying there. The response of everyonein the office to this Sell-A-Thon has beennothing short of spectacular! I couldnt be moreproud of our staff. Crack on!

    -Terdema Ussery, President & CEO

The 2013 Full Court Press Mavs Sell-A-Thon took place all through the workdayWednesday, October 2nd. While toting orange pants and bright yellow shirtsaccording to which team each person belonged to, the Mavs employees went to

work, pulling for their color-coordinated teams to break a one day sales record.Mark Cuban set the office-wide goal of 20,000 tickets to be sold. However, we blewthat number out of the water, selling a total of 55,128 tickets! Through this process,we discovered we had salespeople throughout this organization, only many of themreside in Accounting, Operations, and a variety of other departments. Whetherwearing purple or green throughout the week, we were all really pulling for oneteam - the Dallas Mavericks - and for one cause - to keep the 533 game selloutstreak alive!

MFFLRandall ClarkRandall has been a fan of the Mavericks since 2006 when a friend of his wanted to go to the playoffs versus the Spurs. Itwas his very first game, and the Mavs played incredibly to win in overtime! This game and the whole NBA Championshipexperience have been his favorite moments since becoming an MFFL. As far as players go, he cant really pick onefavorite. He likes #41 of course, but he really appreciates the whole Championship team due to the way they all played

together as a TEAM with a lot of heart. Randall loves knowing he has a reserved seat at his favorite arena, the AAC, andthat he will be surrounded by his fellow MFFLs. Overall, Randall just enjoys feeling the energy - my mom describes it likea circus when there is a timeout - and, like most of our fans, seeing the lovely Dallas Mavs Dancers perform.

American AirlinesMy career has been anything but conventional, but Ilearned a long time ago that keeping a positive attitudeand being in the right place at the right time (and ofcourse knowing the right people) is what matters. Iwas born and raised in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, thenwent on to earn my undergraduate degree in AthleticTraining at The University of Akron and my Mastersin Sport Administration at Kent State University. My

first job out of college was with the ProfessionalBowlers Association. During my time at the PBA I

traveled around the country and served as the liaisonwith the media. It was during that time I also realizedI was interested in living in a climate where thewinters werent so harsh. In August 1999 I made themove to Dallas for a job with the Mavs. I started offas Corporate Communications Manager, and when Ileft seven years later I did so as Director of CorporateCommunications & Community Relations. After theNBA Finals in 2006 I moved over to American Airlines,

where I am responsible for Sports & Entertainment Marketing.

In 2004 I married my husband, Kevin, and in 2010 we welcomed our daughter, Siri. In August of this year Siris brother, Finn, wasborn, so our house is quite busy! Siri loves her brother and at this point thinks he is a glorified baby doll that she wants to hug andkiss at ever opportunity. She also enjoys dance and learning how to dribble and handle a basketball in her TOT program at school. We all love the community where we live. I may have a long commute, but in my opinion we live in the best kept secret in DFW -The Tribute. Being on a peninsula of Lake Lewisville means we have ample wildlife and the best starry nights and full moons onecould ask for in one of the largest metro areas in the USA.On working with the Mavericks:Timing is everything, as well as who you know. I was fortunate the stars aligned and I was able to expand my horizons with my

position at American. My situation is unique in that the sponsorship was already in place when I moved into my current position. We are very proud to have our name on the building in our hometown that serves as the home of the Mavs and Stars, and to be astrong partner for both teams. Given my background with the team I have both personal and professional interest in the Mavs, sofor me it is the best of both worlds. I get to enjoy being close to the franchise and management that helped kick my career intohigh gear, and at the same time see the impact that such a sponsorship does for our brand in our hometown.
