President’s Newsletter – October 2017

September has been a busy but exciting month at Christchurch Boys’ High School. Many months of hard

work by the Headmaster Mr Nic Hill and his management team in conjunction with the Board of

Trustees, finally came to fruition with the completion of the School Hall.

On 4th September at 10.30am, Old Boy, Bishop Brian Carrell, officiated at the re-dedication of the WWII

Memorial Doors leading into the Assembly Hall. These doors, as Old Boys’ will remember, are situated at

the top of the main stair case, and in the newly reconfigured Hall, now lead onto a large, upper level

seating area.

Next day the Hall was blessed by the School Whanau and the Headmaster, Mr Nic Hill, wore the

ceremonial cloak he had been presented with to mark the special relationship between the School and

the local Whanau. After this, the boys had the first full-School assembly since the earthquakes and the

importance of this occasion cannot be underrated.

Mr Hill wore the cloak again at the next function on Friday 8 September, when Old Boy centurion and

WWll veteran, Bill Turner, along with the youngest year 9 student, Dementry Higgins, officially opened

the Hall by cutting a specially baked cake!

It was at this assembly that a 2017 Altiora Peto Award was presented to Dr David Hopkins. Dr Hopkins is

an internationally acclaimed civil engineer specialising in earthquake and seismic engineering design and

a worthy recipient of this prestigious award. There is to be a second award made at an assembly on 24

October at 1.05pm.

However, prior to this, on 10 October, there is the 60+ years on reunion luncheon at the Cashmere Club.

This gathering is for all Old Boys who have been gone from CBHS for sixty years or more. Those who

haven’t as yet registered for this and wish to do so, are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Check

for information on this event in this newsletter.

The newsletter and School web-site is where you will also find information on the Adams House

Centennial. This in an important milestone in the history of the School and is taking place over Labour

Weekend. The Executive hopes all who attend have a thoroughly enjoyable time. Our best wishes to all.

We also have the annual monitors’ lunch at Adams House on Friday October 27. This is an occasion when

the Association Executive can thank the monitors for the extra work they put into their school day and

make them aware their commitment is appreciated.

The School year then begins to wind down with senior examinations and the general hurley-burley of

end of year.

In the previous newsletter I urged all Old Boys to visit the School and see the tremendous amount of

work that has been carried out. I also encourage you all to check the School web-site and see the

wonderful achievements, across a wide field of endeavours, that the young men of the School are

succeeding in. It should be a source of great satisfaction. Please, also do not forget my other plea – stay

involved in your old school. Stay connected to your mates from your era and make sure you attend

School events and Old Boy social functions.

GOLF Performance in 2017 would rank as our best year ever. Our A team of Tom Parker (Captain), Dominic Brettkelly, Ben Baker and Jack Ryder have produced some excellent results, finishing 1st equal (losing on a countback) in the Canterbury qualifying for NZ Secondary schools. With Burnside being the defending champions we were also given a spot in the National Secondary Schools Championships. We have continued an unbeaten run of 5 years in inter-schools, beating Auckland Grammar, Westlake Boys’, Timaru Boys’ and Otago Boys’ in each of those years. Tom and Dominic both represented NZ in an age group tournament in Australia, with Tom also being selected 4 times for NZ. Tom and Dominic have both gained scholarships to the USA for next year, and Ben is working hard on gaining one as well. Tom heads off to the University of Oregon and Dominic to the University of West Kentucky. NZ Secondary Schools National Champions After 5 years of trying to qualify we finally got our chance. Despite being one of the top 3 schools teams in the country we have been unable to qualify due to a strong Burnside team. This year we were finally given a chance and our team of Tom Parker (Captain), Dominic Brettkelly, Ben Baker and Jack Ryder proved that our efforts to qualify had been worth it. CBHS opened the first round with a total of 5 under to be in 1st place, leading Burnside by 1 and Nelson College by 6. Dominic Brettkelly -3, Tom Parker -2 and Ben Baker even as the 3 counting scores first round. In the afternoon CBHS piled on the pressure, Tom Parker shot 7 under the second round to finish 9 under for the day. Dominic Brettkelly 1 over for 2 under overall and Ben Baker went 6 under finishing 6 under over the 2 rounds. CBHS beat Burnside by 8 strokes. Nelson College finished tied for 3rd.

Tom Parker was 1st individual, Ben 2nd and Dominic 4th.

CYCLING

Cycling - National School Road Championships Laurence Pithie 1st - U16 Points Champion Luke Smith (Yr 9) - 3rd U15 points race Bailey O'Donnell - 2nd U20 points race

As a result, for the first time ever, CBHS won the top boys School Trophy. For 18 riders to travel north and take on the powerhouse teams of Auckland Grammar, Palmerston North Boys’ and Takapuna Grammar (these schools bring 40+ riders to this national event) and to win was a massive achievement. As one person put it, it was like "David vs Goliath". An epic result for the team. As manager of the team, I was honoured to take away such a quality group of riders and fine young men. Note : The HA Joli cup was first presented in 1970 and then revised to its present structure in 2009. It is prized by

the large Auckland schools as a symbol of cycling supremacy.

"This win has to be one of the most stunning wins in the 50 year history of the event" says Kevin Seale, Chairman of

Cycling NZ Schools.

“It could not be more fitting for Christchurch Boys High School to have won this and be defending that title in 2018

when the National Championships come to the South Island for the first time in the 51st year of competition.”

ALTIORA PETO AWARD 2017

The Altiora Peto Medal is awarded to a living Old Boy who best reflects the school’s motto Altiora Peto – “I seek

higher things” – and who will serve as a role model to the current boys of the school. DAVID CONWAY HOPKINS Today’s recipient of the Altiora Peto Award began at Christchurch Boys’ High School in III.A.2 in 1956, the year that the School celebrated its 75th anniversary. The School at the time had a roll of 1030 and that year saw many events of celebration, including the unveiling of the Memorial Doors to complete the Hall. David Hopkins completed his years at CBHS in 1961, when he was appointed Senior Monitor and also awarded a Cricket Blue. David went on to study Engineering at University, completing a BE(Hons) and a PhD in this area, later specialising in Earthquake Engineering. He has been a chartered professional engineer all his life and runs his own consulting firm, David Hopkins Consulting Ltd. David’s links with Boys’ High were furthered when he played a role (along with the staff, the then Board of Governors and other Old Boys) for the retention and strengthening of the Main Block in the 1980s. The efforts of this group are evidenced by the iconic building that still stands today. Since 1997, Dr Hopkins has been involved with the Earthquake Engineering Technology Business Cluster. He has been a Senior Technical Advisor to the Department of Building & Housing in New Zealand and was a key advisor on seismic components of the revised NZ Building Act 2004. He has served as a Director of the World Seismic Safety Initiative from 2005, been Chair, Earthquake Engineering NZ and is a former Director of both IPENZ and the International Association for Earthquake Engineering. Dr Hopkins is also noted for his work in the community, having served on the Board of the Wellington City Mission for many years, including stints as Chairman. In addition to these roles, David has been at the forefront of learning from earthquakes. He was a member of NZSEE reconnaissance teams following the 1985 Mexico, 1990 Philippines and 2007 Peru earthquakes, the latter two as leader. He was also a member of Lifelines study tours following the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes, and led the second phase team following the 2009 Padang, Indonesia earthquake. He has published numerous presentations, papers, reports, newspaper and magazine articles to raise public awareness of seismic issues in New Zealand in particular. Dr Hopkins was the only technical member of the CERA Commission following the Greendale fault quake of 4 September 2010; a leader of the Critical Buildings Team (ChCh) and assisted in investigations into the collapses/failures of the CTV, PGC, The Grand Chancellor and Forsyth Barr buildings. In 2010 Dr Hopkins was made a Life member of NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering for his wide involvement with NZSEE activities. It was fitting that as we gathered in the Hall that signifies the first stage of the repair and rebuild of Christchurch Boys’ High School since the 2010/2011 earthquakes, that the Altiora Peto Award for 2017 is awarded to an Old Boy recognised on the world stage for his work in earthquake safety engineering.

Sam Cuming Member, Brian Bartrum, (1947-53) found this among his keepsakes. Sam Cuming was a real gentleman who possessed a great memory, a sense of humour which was infectious, and was a legend in his time. After he retired I came across him several times on the Port Hills and in Hagley Park where he walked. Sam was always interested to hear about his former pupils. At school he was very approachable and as a teacher he held my interest during class lessons. Not an easy task. I had a lot of respect for him partly demonstrated by my cutting out and filing his obituary. The only late teacher I did this for. See the attached copy. Recently in my collection I came across this snap of Teacher Sam Cumming who taught in the then Room one in the 1940's, 50's. The picture may not be of any use to anyone but I thought it was interesting as it showed the room just as it was in 1952, my last year. The clock is near 2.00 o'clock. Perhaps it was at that time 24/7. The photo was taken with a very basic camera and there was no class in the room at the time. I do remember asking Sam if he would mine me taking his photo.

The group meets on the last Thursday of the month at the Horse and Trap Tavern in Mt Eden at 12 o’clock. Around 15-20 Old Boys from Auckland, Northland and the Waikato, and occasionally from beyond, gather to socialise, enjoy lunch, and hear from an invited speaker. Over the past few months we have had historians, fund managers, internet commerce site builders, and others all provide us with food for thought. These are informal events and everyone is welcome to join us. If you would like to be on our mailing list, email Brian Fehsenfeld at [email protected]

A number of branch members attended the funeral of Sir John Graham. It was very well attended and the haka by the full school from Auckland Boys Grammar was very impressive. It also was good catch up with Nick Hill and the head boy from the hostel, both attending on behalf of School. Bryan Bates, Auckland Branch President.
