SRC Update

A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who helped out or con-tributed to our bottle drive. We raised $660.45! That was a great way to jumpstart this school year. September was a good planning month for the SRC, so now we’re ready to put the pedal to the floor and kick it into gear! We have a spirit week planned for the last week in October, which is the 26-30.

Monday - Pajama/Onsie Day

Wednesday - Duct Tape Day

Thursday - Opposite Gender Day

Friday - Black/ Orange or Costume Day

We will supply each classroom with a roll of duct tape on the 28th just in case you couldn’t find any at home, but we still strongly encourage you to do your best! There is going to be a Halloween activity on Friday, October 30th at noon for all K-12 students! Make sure to be as unique and original as possible because the best dressed or most creative costumes will be in the running for some canteen coupons. Speaking of canteen, we have upgraded our canteen items so we now sell four flavours of popcorn and 2 flavours of beef jerky!

Star City Students Attend Saskatchewan Leadership Conference

This year's Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference (SSLC) was anoth-er success, if not the best one yet. Shellbrook was the hosting school and they put on a phenomenal Hunger Games themed conference. The conference started on Wednesday, September 16th and we were greeted by food and many different activities when we arrived. Not too long after, everyone was separated into 20 Districts, just like in the novels. The next two days would consist of sessions full of challenges and activities that would win points for your district. There was a wide variety of sessions that you could attend, anything from “Finding your True Colours” to discovering your blood type; You could go learn some country dancing or practice your improv skills. There were also some sessions that everyone attended. We listened to Theo Fleury and Ishmael Beah tell their stories of hardships that they went through and how to deal with challenges that might arise in our schools and lives. Thurs-day evening we had a formal “Capitol” banquet and foam dance where every-one had an amazing time! We looked like wet dogs by the end of it, but it was all worth it! When Friday rolled around everyone was pretty tired, but that’s when the real Hunger Games took place. Everyone was shipped to the golf course for one final chance at getting points for your district. The win-ning district led the parade down main street and that brought SSLC to a close. This conference was jam packed with activities and thought provoking speakers, and we can’t wait to attend next year’s SSLC in Maple Creek!

Cateen Days New canteen items– Jack Link’s Beef Jerky—original & Teriyaki ($2.00/stick)

Flavored popcorn - Dill, White Cheddar, Butter and Sweet & Salty ($1.50/bag)

Hot Dog Sales Hot dog sales are held the first Friday of each month. Hot dogs are $1.50 each and proceeds from these sales go to the play-ground equipment fund. The first hot dog day will be Friday, October 2.

School Photos School pictures will be taken on Friday, October 23 begin-ning at 9:00 am. Preschool children are welcome to come and have their pictures taken at 8:45. All pictures will be taken in the gymnasium.

This year, in lieu of the magazine drive, our school held a bottle drive. Students in K-4 picked up garbage as the students in 5-12 picked up bottles at various locations around town. Staff members drove trucks to help carry the bottles back to the school where they were dumped into an enormous pile and sorted. We'd like to thank Crop Production Services (Valparaiso) for donating two ex-tremely large plastic bags for better stor-age! They made things go so much smoother!

Milk & Hot Lunch Program Milk and hot lunch programs continue to be offered each month. Forms are available from the office if you are interested in or-dering for your child(ren).

School Snack Program Snack will be served to students Monday & Thursday mornings. If you would like to donate garden produce or volunteer to assemble and deliver snacks at the school please contact Mrs. Wingert at 306-863-2353. Assembly and delivery would take approximately a half hour (9:30-10:00AM).

Terry Fox Walk We held our annual Terry Fox walk on Wednesday, September 30. The weather was wonderful for our walk and we raised $133.10 to donate to cancer research. Thank you to everyone who made donations to this event! Thank you to Mrs. Batiuk and the Jr. SRC for organizing this event!

If your child will be late or absent from class, PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL— 306-863-2353— so that staff is aware of the absence. We also have a general mail-box where you may leave messages if you are calling out of school hours.

Fall Supper Donations

We are accepting donations of potatoes and cabbage for the fall supper. Please call the school 863-2353 to arrange for pick up.

The Before and After School Program is up and running. If you require child care for your school age child(ren) from 7:00 am to 8:45 am and/or 3:25 to 6:00 pm, please

Falcons Athletics Cross Country

The Cross Country season is nearing the

end for another year. Senior runners partici-

pated in three meets this year: Tisdale, Mel-

fort and Choiceland. After these three meets,

Garrit holds top spot, Colten 3rd and Cody 6th

in their age division! NESSAC will be held on

Wednesday, October 7 in Nipawin at the golf

course. Good luck Falcons! The Grade 5/6

runners have participated in a meet at Star

City and they will travel to Nipawin on October

6 and Tisdale October 14 to compete. All

runners set personal bests throughout the

season and significantly improved their en-

durance. Mrs. Batiuk and Mr. Unruh are very

proud- Great Job - Keep running! We would like

to send out a thank you to Lyle and Michelle

Cowell for letting us train in their trails!

Jr. Boys Volleyball

The Junior Boys Volleyball team is busy

practicing and refining their volleyball skills.

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays 3:30-

5:00 and game days are Thursdays. Parent

drivers for game days are needed. Please con-

tact Mr. Burke if you are able to drive and be

sure to fill out and return Driver Authorization

forms to the office. We host home league

games on October 15 and Pod Playoffs on Oct.

29. Come out and cheer on the Falcons. Games

will start around 5:00 pm.

What are School Community Councils?

School Community Councils are the school-level teams which provide an op-

portunity for input into school improvement.

School Community Councils members are:

Dedicated volunteers Principals, teachers, students, parents and community mem-

bers interested in working with others to improve their school.

Individuals able to provide a one or two-year commitment to the work of the

council.

Successful schools don’t just happen - they require parent and commu-nity involvement!

The Star City School SCC elections and meeting will be occurring on

Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00 pm at Star City School in the Library.

We encourage all parents and community members to attend this meeting.

1 whole wheat tortilla

2 tbsp soy nut butter

sunflower seeds, shelled

raisins

• Spread the soy nut butter on the tortilla.

• Sprinkle sunflower seeds and raisins over the nut butter.

• Place the banana on one edge of the tortilla.

• Roll up the banana tucking in the ends.

• Saran wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes before slicing

into bite size pieces. Yum!
