Flu Season is approaching. Get vaccinated now for early, season-long protection against flu

Flu vaccine is widely available in Clark County, and health officials are recommending everyone six months and older get vaccinated soon.“Flu season starts early some years, so we encourage people not to put it off,” said Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County health officer. “Protection doesn’t kick in until two weeks after you get vaccinated, so don’t wait until flu is widely circulating before you get your shot.”Flu occurs primarily from October through May. A contagious respiratory disease, flu kills more people in the U.S. than any other vaccine-preventable disease. On average, nearly 24,000 people die each year of flu, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized. Flu shots remain the best method of preventing flu-related illness and missed days at school or work. To get vaccinated, call your health care provider or pharmacy. If you don’t have health insurance, call Sea Mar Community Health Centers at (360) 852-9070 or the Vancouver Free Clinic at (360) 313-1390 to make an appointment for a low-cost flu shot. Businesses wanting to provide onsite flu shots can call:

Adventist Health: (503) 408-7040 Get a Flu Shot: 1-877-358-7468 (Getaflushot.com) Maxim Healthcare Service: (360) 896-7289 Passport Health: (360) 597-4495

In addition to flu shots, these everyday practices can reduce the chance of catching or spreading disease:

Cough or sneeze into your arm or cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Throw away the tissue and wash your hands. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home and limit contact with others. Avoid close contact with sick people. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. For more information, see http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/index.htm.

Compost is rich in nutrients that help plants to grow, acts to retain soil moisture and can help suppress plant disease. Using compost is good for your soil and can reduce the need to irrigate your garden or use toxic herbicides or pesticides. It’s easy to turn your yard debris and kitchen scraps into compost. Just as in nature, leaves and plant debris feed and enrich the soil, you can recycle the food scraps from your kitchen and yard debris back into your soil.

Learn how by attending a Free Backyard Composting Workshop, or Wormshop ($35 materials fee). The Master Composter/Recycler Program is a volunteer-based community program whose mission is to educate the community about recycling and help keep recyclable materials out of the waste-stream.

Compost bins are for sale at Columbia Springs; the FreeGarden brand compost bin is $55 and the Seattle Composter is $65.

What’s with the traffic signs in neighbors’ yards about slowing down?

You’ve hopefully noticed signs peppered through Arnada stuck in neigh-bors’ lawns. It’s not the political ones, but the signs asking you to make sure you stick to driving the 25mph speed limit.

There is a nationwide push to promote drivers to stick to the 25mph speed limit on neigborhood streets.

Here’s a graphic from NY DOT detailing the biggest reason why 25mph is a nessessary speed limit. The stopping distance is dramatically less than if the car is driving 30mph.

Take Care of those Chimneys When You Start Your Fires this Winter

As temperatures drop, many people in Vancouver start using their fireplaces and stoves to stay warm.Between October and April 2013, the Vancouver Fire De-partment responded to 28 active chimney fires. Of those, five had already spread to the structure by the time they were reported.

Chimney fires occur when creosote build-up within the chimney catches fire. Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood and other combustibles and is very flammable.Brick and mortar and metal pipe chimneys designed to convey heat and smoke out of the fireplace are not designed to contain a creosote fire. Creosote fires inside a chimney can burn through the mortar between the bricks and enter the structure, or it can overheat a stove pipe to the extent that it “cooks” the wood around it, making it even more flammable. Sparks and embers from the creosote fire within the chimney can also float down to the roof shingles and gutters, where there may be flammable leaves or pine needles.

Chimney fires can be prevented with regular inspection and cleaning. The Vancouver Fire Department and Fire Marshal’s Office encourages property owners to have their chimneys inspected once a year and cleaned as needed, based on the results of your inspection. There are several chimney inspection and cleaning services in the Vancouver area and even more in Portland.

Keep your home and family safe this winter!

Good food for thought. Staying at 25mph is worth it.
