Build Your Own Stand-Up Paddle Board Course Call to schedule Participants build their own stand-up paddle board custom-fit to their size from cedar and plywood. Builders will be responsible for varnishing or painting their new boards at home after finishing the course. (24 hours). Fee: $1,000. FoM: $900. Lift Half-Model Making Course Call to schedule Students learn how to read a set of plans and use the basic woodworking tools most commonly found in a boatbuilder’s tool kit to shape a lift half-model of a North Carolina Shad Boat. The models are completed in a step-by-step procedure ready to start applying a finish. (12 hours). Fee: $110. FoM: $99. Build a Stitch & Glue Kayak/Canoe Call to schedule Each participant in this class will use the stitch and glue method to build a boat, preselected in consultation with the instructor from a range of styles. Suitable types include performance kayaks 11–14 feet long, 17-foot sea/ touring kayaks, 12 to 14-foot canoes, or a 12-foot pram or rowboat. Participants will complete their boats to the point when they are ready to take home to be painted and/or varnished. (60-72 hours). Fee: $750–$1,250. FoM: $675–$1,125. Paddle/Oar Making Course Call to schedule Participants can choose to make a canoe paddle, stand-up paddleboard paddle, kayak paddle, or pair of oars in this two-day class. Each participant will take home a paddle or pair of oars ready for paint or varnish. (12 hours). Fee: $275 for paddle; or $325 for a pair of oars. Merry-time for Tots Every 2nd Wednesday, Jan.– May and Sept.–Dec., 10 a.m. Enjoy maritime themed stories, crafts, artifacts, games, and songs with your young child (ages 2-5). Activities will focus on pirates, whales, sharks, and dolphins. These themes will be supplemented in February and December with holiday appropriate activities. Each program is 45-60 minutes long. Parents are asked to stay for entire program. Pre-registration required. Cost is $5 (Friends of the Museum Members free). Call 252-504-7758.

COASTAL CULTURE PROGRAMS

JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM

Limited Spaces Available! Two-week sailing sessions for youth ages 8 to 16 use the fun of sailing to teach boat handling and seamanship, from basic to more advanced, and competitive racing during Regatta Week. The program promotes self-reliance, awareness of safety, adaptability to the forces of nature, and develops self-confidence, sportsmanship, and respect for others, boats, and the sea.Junior Sailing is a Friends of the Museum program. Registration begins Feb. 14. The fee is $335 per session. Members receive a $35 discount per session. Sessions consist of one group in the morning from 8:30 a.m.–noon and another in the afternoon from 1 p.m.–4:30 p.m.Session I: AM or PM, June 8–19 Session II: AM or PM, June 22–July 3 Session III: AM or PM, July 6–17 Session IV: AM or PM, July 20–31Session V: Regatta Week: Aug. 3–8, 12:30–5 p.m. The purpose of this six-day Regatta Week is to gain greater familiarity with the boats and to prepare for and race in a regatta. Participants must have prior sailing experience. Regatta registration, lunch, and dinner on Saturday are included in the fee. SUMMER SCIENCE SCHOOL

IN THE FIELD & ON THE WATER PROGRAMS

Registration and Refund Policy:Advance registration is required for all paid programs. Call 252-504-7758 or visit the museum. Registration cannot be made via e-mail and is confirmed only after payment is processed. For group programs, call for details and reservations. Registration ends at 2 p.m. the day prior to the program.Registration fees, less a 10% fee, are refunded when the museum receives cancellation notice at least two weeks before the start of a program. There is no refund within two weeks of the start of a program.Field trips into coastal habitats may involve travel by boat or van, and/or hiking or wading in shallow water. Closed-toe shoes are required for safety on field trips.

ENTERING GRADES 1 & 2:Pirates! June 22–23, July 7–8, Aug. 4–5, 9 a.m. - noon Ten young pirates and their fearless captain will work together to learn how pirates like Blackbeard lived, dressed, ate, and worked. The crew will work together to set the rules of the ship, learn battle skills with wooden weapons, and go on a pirate worthy hunt through the museum to locate hidden treasure! Fee: $65. Seashore Life I June 15–16, July 27–28, Aug. 10–11, 9 a.m.–noon Investigate coastal marine life of the tidal flats, salt marshes, and sounds on local islands during this two-day class. Field-based classes include ferry ride, barrier island hiking, and animal identification. Fee: $60.ENTERING GRADE 3Fish & Fishing June 18–19, July 16–17, 9 a.m.–noon An introduction to coastal fish and fishing methods. Cane poles, bait, and tackle are provided for dock fishing for this 2-day class. Students also use nets to catch and identify marine life in near shore waters. Fee: $75.ENTERING GRADE 4Boats & Models (sportfishing boat) June 30–July 2, July 28–30, 9 a.m.–noon Build a model of a sportfishing boat at the museum’s Watercraft Center. Use museum exhibits and field trips to learn about boats used for offshore charter fishing and some of the fish targeted by fishermen aboard these uniquely designed vessels. Fee: $95.ENTERING GRADES 5 & 6Seashore Life II June 29–July 1, Aug.12-14, 9 a.m.–noon Investigate estuarine habitats, plants, and animals through field and lab studies. This three-day course includes a field trip to the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve, water quality testing, using microscopes for plankton identification, and many more activities. Fee: $60.ENTERING GRADES 7–10Maritime Adventures July 13–17, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Staff of the N.C. Maritime Museum and the Rachel Carson Reserve pair up for this unique camp that uses history and science to teach about the maritime environment and culture of the Crystal Coast. Topics covered include sea monsters, plankton, cetaceans, pirates, and more! Students will participate in field trips to local sites such as Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground and the Rachel Carson Reserve. Activities include creature dissections and chocolate chip excavations. 9th Annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off Jan. 17, 6 p.m. Four guest clam chowder cooks compete at the Watercraft Center. Participants enjoy tasting the four chowders and vote for their favorite. The event also includes a cornbread taste-off. Space is limited. Ticketed event.Vanishing Sail: The Story of a Caribbean Tradition-Film Screening Mar. 26, 7 p.m. The last wooden sailboat builder of a small island in the West Indies dreams of saving the tradition of boat building, which was brought to the island centuries ago. This award-winning film follows the journey of a father and sons who build a sloop that will compete in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Stories of the Caribbean are shared along the way. 5th Annual North Carolina Whales and Whaling Symposium Apr. 3, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. This day-long event will include presentations focusing on whales and historic hunting practices. Coastal Culture and Waterfowl Watching Excursion Jan. 15–16, two-day overnight trip Observe the migration of wintering waterfowl at Wildlife Refuges and National Seashores in Eastern North Carolina. Learn about the unique history of our coastal communities as well. Museum staff will lead you on a tour through the remote and beautiful regions of Pamlico, Hyde, and Dare Counties.
