An Official Oxford Christmas

This Autumn, the University of Oxford Shop will launch a collection of gifts forthe Christmas season and beyond. Commissioned exclusively for the University’sofficial shop on the High Street and online store, oushop.com, the designsincluded in the range have all been inspired by Oxford.

Oxford BaubleA fairytale silhouette of Oxford’s dreaming spires created by UK designer, EmmaMolony, has been captured for Christmas in a bauble. This handmade bauble featuresthe Radcliffe Camera, Sheldonian Theatre, Tom Tower and Lincoln College Tower alongwith the University Museum swifts.

Oxford BagsFrom on trend classic satchel designs to camera bags and cross body handbags, thisbespoke Oxford range is made from the highest quality full grain leather. Influencedby classic British Vintage style, the bags are made in the UK.

Little Oxford For our younger customers we have worked with Oxfordshire babywear company,Molly and Monty, to create two Oxford themed baby suits. Made from organic cotton, the short sleeved suits feature two sweet designs to choose from – the iconic Oxfordbicycle or the Oxford dodo.

Famous for its appearance in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Oxford don, LewisCarroll, the dodo is much loved both by the shop and our customers. With this in mind, the dodo theme continues in store on many items, most unusual of all being a woodenpull-along dodo toy, handcrafted in wood sourced from sustainable forests in the EU.

Oxford CityscapeOur contemporary Oxford Cityscape range by Lizzie Prestt was introduced last year andits trademark bright colours permanently brighten up the shop. We’ve stocked up onmugs, plates, coasters and placemats for Christmas 2013 as well as the Cityscapeadvent calendar complete with Father Christmas on his sleigh above the spires!

Oxford Christmas CardsThis year the shop has a healthy range of Oxford Christmas cards including exclusivedesigns from 8 of Oxford’s colleges.

Oxford Candle HolderDesigned exclusively for the shop by Oxfordshire’s Isis Ceramics, this collectableChristmas themed candle holder decorated in festive red, will be produced in a limitededition run of 25.

We have reached a tricky crossroads in modern women's lives and our collective daughters are bearing thebrunt of some intolerable pressures. Although feminism has made great strides forward since our mothers'and grandmothers' day, many of the key issues - equality of pay, equality in the home, representation atsenior level in the private, public and political sectors - remain to be tackled. This is a manifesto for everymother who has ever had to comfort a daughter who doesn't feel 'pretty', for every young woman who out-performs her male peers professionally and wonders why she is still not taken seriously, and for anyone

interested in the world we are making for the next generation. Melissa Benn will be discussing her new bookand signing copies in what is sure to be a wonderful event.

Yes Scotland or Better Together? Your guide to the options likely to be presented in Scotland's independencereferendum. Following the signing of the Edinburgh Agreement in October 2012, Scotland's voters are

promised a referendum on independence in autumn 2014. If they reject independence, the proposed changesfrom the Calman Commission's review on Scottish Devolution will most likely be put in place. But whatwill happen after the referendum? How will Westminster and the rest of the UK respond? This event willexplain what both options would entail, in plain language, presenting the facts without taking sides. Itfocuses, not on which option is likely to win, but on how they would be put into place in practice.

Gabby Young and other AnimalsSaturday 26th October : It’s an 8 piece British band – gypsy, folk, a little bit of rockand jazz – they have their new genre ‘circus swing’. Trumpet, trombone, piano, clarinet and Gabby’s amazing vocals. The orchestration is lush, it’s a little bitburlesque, a little bit 20’s flapper and a little bit gyspy. At the bottom of all thatthough is great songwriting and thoughtful lyrics. Think Arcade Fire, Kate Bush andgypsy folk. Gabby was the youngest ever recruit to the National Youth Choir at theage of 12. She was intending to become an opera singer but she heard the musicof Jeff Buckley and jazz and she switched to this eclectic fusion. Time: 8pmTickets: £13 (concs)

Charlie Bartlett, the proprietor and the delightful Emma were there to welcome

us when we arrived and immediately asked if we would like one of their signature

cocktails. Sue chose the Vanilla Colada (rum based) and I went for the Blue

Diamond ( vodka based). We were on time and there were plenty of spaces

available in the free car park just along from the restaurant.

The café was almost full and being as this was a Tuesday evening was testament to the

reputation that Café Aloha is gaining both locally and gradually further afield. The décor

is very pleasant and there is a real warmth about the café.

The restaurant is open six days in the week Monday to Saturday and serves everything

anybody would want, from breakfast through to lunch and then early evening happy

hour cocktails, tapas and finally dinner.

As Emma and Charlie told us, all the produce is sourced locally and only the finest

ingredients are used.

For our starters Sue went for the Tricolour which was the  buffalo mozarello, avocado,

cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaf whilst I chose the grilled asparagus, with olive oil,

balsamic vinegar and parmesan shavings.

Sue chose a bottle of the Cuvee de Richard rose, which we shared for our starter but

for my main course I had a  glass of the Mount View Merlot from Chile. This was to

accompany one of the best main courses I have ever eaten, the slow roasted pork belly

with cannelloni beans and chorizo stew. It was fantastic! Sue had the pan seared fillet

of sea bass with minty new potatoes and pepper sauce.

Given that my typical meal on a Tuesday night is cheese on toast we ought not to

have gone for dessert but homemade tiramisu was too tempting for Sue and the

caramel cheesecake finished off what was an outstanding dinner for both of us.

Café Aloha is certainly a restaurant to visit and if you want a takeaway they do that as

well!

The Snooty Mehmaan near Faringdon, just half an hour from Oxford City Centre, offers refined Indian and Thai flavours in the scenic setting of the Oxfordshirecountryside. This culinary gem also boasts a beautiful bar area and extensivetake-away menu.

The rich combination of spices wafting from the kitchen was tantalising even fromoutside, tempting us inside the modern looking bar and through to the dining areawith its striking original oak beams and flooring.

We sampled both the Thai and Indian cuisine on offer and were impressed by the highstandards. To start, my guest had the Soft Shell Crab with Mango, Sweet Chill andpeanuts dotted through for added crunch. The refreshing mango and pokey chilli madethis light enough that he was left wanting more, especially as complex aromas from thekitchen still hung in the air. My starter was a classic Chicken Sheek Kebab with a citrusdip, a lightly seasoned and mouth-watering opener.

Our main courses were an extremely generous portion of Nua Lao Dang; a Thai stir-frydish of strips of beef with mixed peppers in a tangy, sweet sauce served with noodles, and a side order of seasoned Pak Choi, and Kodhu Gosht; a delightful combination oflamb and butternut squash in a spicy tomato sauce, with aromatic Lemon Rice. Thecurry was served over a candle, keeping it sumptuously hot, allowing me to go back formore and more of the magnificent sauce. The meat in both dishes was of animpressively high standard, the lamb in particular was deliciously tender.

Despite perusing the wide-ranging selection of cooling ice-creams and sorbets on offer,we felt unable to do credit to any of the desserts, replete as we were with our perfectlyspiced and hearty main dishes (my partner was unable to finish his portion –potentially a first!).

The authentic pot in which the curry was served, along with the Thai and Indian music, were small but noteworthy touches that made the evening particularly enjoyable. Withsuch friendly staff, quick service and exotic flavours, we are eager to return for the fixedprice buffet on offer every Sunday.
