Ayushmann Khurrana deserves to be called the most versatile new-comer in B-town. After exploring multi-faceted characters in films likeVicky Donor and Nautanki Saala, Ayushmann recently turned assistantdirector with Madras Caf. He is also a talented singer in his ownright. The latest on Ayushmanns front is his debut album, O Heeriye, which he released on the eve of his birthday. The actor reveals thathe was always inclined towards writing and composing music. I com-posed Paani da Rang and Saadi Galli in school. There are around 8to 10 songs that I have composed, so I thought it was the right time tocome out with my own album.

As if that is not enough, Ayushmann will also be seen singing in YashRaj Productions next opposite Sonam Kapoor.

    Ayushmann Khurranareleases first album

We often hear of on-screen camaraderie extending to off-screenfriendships but few actors tend to take their friendships with co-starsseriously. However, there are exceptions, like the good at heart Ak-shay Kumar and the affable Mithun Chakraborty, who have latelybecome the best of friends. The two actors, who will be seen sharingscreen space in the upcoming film Boss, have been bonding big-timeoff the sets. In the film, Mithun plays the role of Akshay Kumars father,a role that he had earlier essayed in the film, Chandi Chowk to China.

When Akshay Kumar was recently asked about his equation withMithun, he revealed that he had immense respect and reverence forthe veteran actor. I even take advice from him for some scenes. Heis a father figure to me, Akshay revealed.

After receiving rave reviews for her role in Barfi!, Illeana DCruz isback with her second film Phata Poster Nikla Hero. The actress hasbeen offered quite a few roles ever since but she has been firmly re-fusing some of them due to certain apprehensions. The actress revealsthat she is averse to the idea of wearing a bikini on screen, but that isnot because she is shy of wearing one. Apparently, Ileana feels thatshe is simply does not have the figure to carry off a bikini. I dontthink I have the body for a bikini. I have been fighting with my trainerthat I want a body like Deepika but it may be some time before I amable to achieve that kind of a figure.

Strangely enough while most actresses are ready to go under the knifefor their near-perfect appearances, Ileana is reluctant to do any suchthing. I hate to undergo any surgeries to look good. I am happy withthe way I look. Even my dentist advised me to go for tooth correctionas I have crooked teeth but I refused to get it straightened, says theactress.

You seem to be in one of the bestphases in your career with filmmakersand co-stars considering you as theirlucky mascot. How does it feel? I wouldnt know whether I am a luckymascot but I am quite happy with the cur-rent phase of my career. I have had noformal training in acting which is why Iam enjoying the process of filmmakingmore than anyone else. I am learningand unlearning a lot of things with eachfilm. I find it exciting to meet new direc-tors and actors with every film. I am notworried about how much a film is makingat the box office. I just want my work tobe appreciated.

Your last release Once Upon A Time InMumbaai Dobara did not get the de-sired response at the box-office? Didyou feel disappointed? There are various factors at play in thesuccess or failure of a film. The actor anddirector are only one part of the wholeprocess, so you cannot hold them solelyresponsible. On my part, I make sure thatI do justice to my role and enjoy thewhole process of filmmaking. I dont getdisappointed if a film does not work atthe box-office.

OUATIMD was also your third filmwith Akshay Kumar. How has yourequation with him grown over theyears?I have immense respect for Akshay. Hewas the first actor with whom I signed afilm after Salman Khans Dabangg. I didnot have much experience in films thenbut both Salman and Akshay went out oftheir way to make me feel comfortable.Akshay and I share a great working re-lationship today.

Your party song in Akshay Kumarsforthcoming film, Boss, has generatedgreat curiosity? Can you tell us some-thing about it?Its a peppy dance club number and isone of the highlights of the film. When

Akshay and director Anthony D'Souzaapproached me for the song, I was morethan eager to do it. Its a song with adifference and we shot for 12 hours ata stretch. I had to work hard and pushmyself to get the steps as perfectly as Icould, but I really enjoyed doing it.

Are you open to doing item numbersin films?I am not averse to dance numbers. I dontlike them being referred to as item songseither. They are differently shot dancenumbers and add to the entertainmentvalue of the film. The people who con-sider them questionable have a differentmindset. I have got dance numbers rightfrom my first film, after which I did asong in Himmatwala and then Joker. TheGovinda song in Oh My God was alsodifferent. As far as I am concerned, I'vealways believed in doing things that Ican sit and watch with my family. I havestuck to that and I will continue to do soin the future.

After having worked with the top mostactors of the industry, are you nowconsciously trying to work with theyounger lot of actors like Ranveer,Imran and Shahid Kapoor, with whomyou will be seen in Rambo Rajkumar? I started my career with Salman Khan onhis recommendation and then I signed afilm opposite Akshay Kumar. I wasthrilled to work with superstars at anearly stage in my career. I got films oneafter the other with all the senior starsand there was no question of refusingany of them. I was fortunate that theyconsidered me good enough to workwith. I am nine films old now and I amglad that I am also getting the opportu-nity to work with actors of my age.

Your earlier films have crossed the Rs100 crore mark. Do you feel the pres-sure of living up to expectations? Being a part of the Rs 100 crore club hascertainly helped my career but it doesnt

Born into a film family, Sonakshi Sinha is the youngestof three children of actor-politician Shatrughan Sinhaand Poonam Sinha. Of her twin older brothers, LuvSinha was always inclined towards acting and madehis debut with Sadiyaan in 2010 and her otherbrother Kush is training to be a director. So it was aforegone conclusion that Sonakshi would make it infilms. However, Sonkashi was disinterested in the pro-fession and opted to study fashion designing at SNDTWomens University. Sonkashis tryst with films beganwhen she designed the costumes for films like MeraDil Leke Dekho in 2005. She then featured as theshow stopper in The Lakme Fashion Week in 2008and 2009.

It was Salman Khan who goaded the young Sonakshito lose weight and give films a try. When ArbaazKhan offered her Dabangg opposite Salman, Son-akshi seriously took to losing weight, which was adifficult task for her. She lost 30 kgs to make it intofilms. Sonakshi had no formal training in acting butthe actress attended some workshops to make herselfcamera friendly before starting out. Dabangg wenton to set a record at the box-office. It was the high-est grossing film of 2010. The actress also went onto win the debutant awards of the year. There wasno looking back for Sonakshi thereafter.

pressurize me. Its just that expectationshave risen and I want to rise above thoseexpectations. When I first did Dabangg,I wasnt sure how well I would be ac-cepted by the audiences, but they con-nected to my character in the film verywell. My role in Rowdy Rathore had asimilar impact. I would like to receive thesame encouraging response from audi-ences for every film I do. I have a differ-ent ideology about success.

What is your idea of success? For me success is to be able to wake upin the morning and look forward to work-ing on the sets the next day. I treat workas worship, as I am very passionateabout work. Money is not so importantfor me. My parents can look after me.What I earn is taken care of by mymother. I ask them for money wheneverI feel the need to and that is success forme. Fortunately for me, a majority of myfilms have also worked well at the boxoffice.

You seem to be more comfortable inthe conservative Indian look in most ofthe roles that you have done. Will weever see you in a full-fledged glam-orous role in a film? All of my films have been in the Indianspace. I think thats because people ap-preciated me in the desi avatar in myfirst film and it worked for me. There-after, producers and directors offeredme roles in the more traditional look, knowing that it would suit me. For in-stance, Ajay Devgn often says that I looklike a typical Hindi film heroine of yes-teryears. I dont choose roles based onwhat clothes I will be wearing. If my fanswould like to see me in western wear, Iam equally comfortable in jeans andshirts but I do have certain principles andI believe in going by them. I am not com-fortable in skin shows nor am I open tothe idea of kissing on screen.

Arent you anxious of getting type-cast?At this point in time I am not worried. Ihave never been competitive nor am Ithe contender for the number one posi-tion. I am still exploring roles. My lastfilm, Lootera was different and peopleappreciated my work in it. I have a longway to go.

You said you were not very comfort-able kissing on screen. Was that thereason your mother was there on thesets when you were doing intimatescenes for OUATIMD?My mother wasnt there. My motheroften comes on the sets to give food. Sheis fond of feeding people and loves tocook for others. Everyone on the setsloves her food too. My parents trust meimplicitly and know that I wont do any-thing to offend them or hang their headsdown in shame. They have given meenough freedom to choose the roles thatI want to do.

How do you react to gossip linking youto your co-stars? Sometime back, therewas news that you were seeing Ran-veer Singh? How do your parents reactto it?I dont react at all. I dont feel the needto react unless its necessary. Earlier, Iwould get worried but then I have beenbrought up in a house of actors. Fortu-nately for me, my parents are in thesame industry too, so they know how it is.

Who are your friends in the industry? I have made a lot of friends in the indus-try but they are there only on the sets.Once I am done with my work I am backhome. I dont party as I have a deadline.Even today the latest I can come home isby 1.00 a.m. unless I am shooting. Myfriends are all outside the industry andthey have been with me since my child-hood.

Being a part of the Rs 100 croreclub has certainlyhelped my career

After the success of Dabangg, Sonakshi was floodedwith offers. Her first release in 2012, Rowdy Rathore, with Akshay Kumar, went on to become a huge box-office hit. That was followed by Shirish Kunders di-rectorial venture, Joker, once again with AkshayKumar, which was a huge box office dud. However,Sonakshi returned with a bang in the same year withSon of Sardar and Dabangg 2, both of which setnew precedents at the box-office. She was also ac-corded by ETC Business Awards, as the highest gross-ing actress of 2012.The actress also went on to do item numbers andcameo appearances in films. Her special song GoGo Govinda with Prabhu Deva in Akshay Kumars OhMy God went on to become one of the top grossersof the year.

Having made her mark with commercial blockbusters,Sonakshi decided to break the mould with her rolein Vikramaditya Motwanes period drama, Lootera, opposite Ranveer Singh. The film not only went onto garner huge critical acclaim, but Sonakshi alsowon many hearts in the role of a Bengali girl in thefilm. Her next, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Do-bara, did not work, but Sonakshi was appreciatedfor her performance in the film. She is currentlyshooting for Prabhu Deva's Rambo Rajkumar oppo-site Shahid Kapoor, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullet Rajawith Saif Ali Khan and A. R. I laugh and joke on the sets and that isit. Once I am home I am cut off from every-body. But yes, on the sets I am friendly witheveryone; we discuss a lot of things. His lm, Phata Poster Nikla Hero, has just been released at the box-office and ShahidKapoor is eager to know about the audience reaction. The response to the lm is evenmore crucial for Shahid, considering that this is the rst time he has attempted a rolein the comedy genre. The actor, who has been lying low on the career front for some

time now, opens up for a frank interview on the lm, his career moves and his chang-ing equation with the industry, besides his personal life.

Usually a hero is seen on the poster of afilm but you are shown coming out of theposter in your latest film. (Smiles) Thats what makes the film and itstitle very special. Also, since my film is re-leasing after a year, the makers must havethought about this brilliant poster idea.Jokes apart, it was not easy tearing throughthe poster. We took three days to perfectthe shot. My pants tore off doing the sceneand my harness got stuck but the poster stillwouldnt tear. It was only after three daysthat I managed to tear it.

This is the first time you have attempteda film in the comedy genre. How was theexperience?I have never enjoyed playing any othercharacter so much. In fact, I was excitedabout the film from the very day when pro-ducer Ramesh Taurani told me about thefilms title. It reminded me of NaseruddinShah and Hero Hiralal. When director RajKumar Santoshi later gave me a two hournarration, we were all laughing our heartsout. In the film, I play the role of a fake copwho wants to become a hero and see hisposters all over the place. The film is alaugh riot from the word go and I had a funtime doing it.

Your pairing with Ileana Dcruz is quitefresh and unusual. How was the equa-tion between the two of you? I had seen Ileana in Barfi! and I quite likedher performance in the film. When I heardthat she had been confirmed to play theleading lady opposite me, I researched onthe kind of films she had done earlier. Ifound out that she had attempted similarfilms in the south, some of which had clickedexcellently with the audiences. A new pairis always a matter of curiosity for the audi-ences and I am sure our pairing will bewell-received.

How was your equation with Raj KumarSantoshi?

I am a big follower of Raj Kumar Santoshisfilms, but in this film he has given an alto-gether new dimension to his sense of com-edy. I remember the first thing that AmitabhBachchan said when I promoted the film onthe KBC show, was that I was lucky to beworking with a director like Raj Kumar San-toshi. He also told me that Raj-ji is a fan-tastic director with a great sense of comedyand he takes good care of all his actors. Iam sure every actor who works with Raj-jiwill say this. His focus is so good that eventhe worst of your performances can turngood. Its my first comic performance and Iam glad its in his film. I have never workedwith a director who has such an amazingsense of humour. The man who has madefilms like Ghayal, Andaz Apna Apna,Damini, Ghatak, Khaki and Ajab Prem KiGazab Kahani, has a tremendous passionfor comedy.

You have suddenly taken to doing onlyone film a year, for the last three years. Is it a deliberate decision? I dont have a body of work that I can af-ford to do just one film a year. I still have along way to go. Ideally, I should have atleast three releases a year, but I wascaught up with Mausam, which took time inthe making. As a result, I could not sparedates for other films and had to refuse sev-eral interesting offers, including the recentlyreleased, Shuddh Desi Romance. I was with-out work for two and half years but I amhappy to be back with a film like PhataPoster Nikla Hero.

What did you do in the intervening pe-riod? I was looking at ways where I could startworking round the clock once again. I wastired of sitting at home and doing nothing.Like the hero in this film, I wanted to see my-self on the posters with a line-up of films.Of course, I was hearing scripts as I was of-fered 17 to 18 films after Mausam butthings simply didnt work out. I wanted to

I remember the rstthing that Amitabh

do them but could not goahead due to logistical issues.I was like a horse waiting forthe race but the doors werenot open. Teri Meri Kahaaniwas my last offering.

Do you feel the pressure ofliving up to expectations? How do you react to fail-ures? When I did Kaminey it was adifferent film and I knew peo-ple would either reject me oraccept me on the basis of thepromos itself. I am hoping thatthis film will mark the begin-ning of more promising thingsto come. As such, every film isa pressure. If your film is a hityou have to see to it that youdo still better in your next filmand if your film fails you stillhave to try and do better. Itsan industry rule. You have tomake a comeback every Fri-day.

Do you still feel that you arestruggling to make a mark? I have been struggling to make a mark since my first film. I never hadanyone to guide me. My father has done art house cinema or the so-called parallel films. I had to struggle after my first film. It was a non-star cast film with no big heroine or hero. The biggest star of the filmwas music director Anu Mallik, as the music of the film had done well. Iam still learning from my mistakes and from the films I have been doing.I am climbing one step at a time and still have a long way to go.

Your personal life has always been in the news more than your pro-fessional life? How do you react to such news? An actor cannot get affected by the media perception about his per-sonal life. What can we do! There are so many entertainment pagesdaily that need to be filled up. Gossip and rumours are the hottest top-ics on these pages. These news stories will stop only if there is a checkon the number of entertainment pages in newspapers.

How would you definebrand Shahid Kapoor? It is hard to define this be-cause I have never followedany strategy to build up myown brand. I am happy aboutthe fact that I have a lovingrelationship with my audi-ences, which I do not everwant to lose. Recently, I was ata college event and the re-sponse I got from the youngcrowds was amazing. I havecommitted many mistakes inmy life and I am likely to re-peat them in the future too,but I hope I can evolve abrand identity for myself inthe days ahead.

Tell us about your forthcom-ing films. I have three films this year. After Phata Poster.., there isRambo Rajkumar in which I ampaired with Sonakshi Sinha. The film is directed by PrabhuDeva, who is also a brilliantchoreographer. It was a greatexperience dancing with him.

He broke all the bones in my body! Prabhu Deva is not only a greatdancer but a great director too. I am also doing Vishal Bharadwajsadaptation of Hamlet. Vishal Bharadwaj is known to extract outstandingperformances from his actors.

You have been there in the industry for almost a decade now. Look-ing back how does it feel? It feels great. There was a time when I used to look at posters of filmsand wonder whether I would be able to get my first break. In the lastten years I have done 20 films and I am thankful to the people withwhom I have worked. I belong to a middle class family and used to livein a rented flat, before joining the industry. The going was tough and Iwas skeptical of making it. Right now I am giving interviews but therewas a time when I used to wait for long hours to meet a filmmaker whowould give me my first potential break. So it feels great to achieve allthis in a span of 10 years.

  • ROMETHREE MUST-SEE ANCIENT MONUMENTS

N othing captures the iconic nature of AncientRome quite as effectively as the Colosseum, the massive amphitheatre located near theForum, and the subject of countless calendars, postcards and travel brochures. Now almost 2,000 yearsold, the Colosseum (also Coliseum) was started by Em-peror Vespasian in AD 72 and inaugurated eight yearslater by his son, Emperor Titus. It was built by Jewishslaves whod been brought to Rome after the suppressionof their revolt in Judaea.

With its 80 arched entrances, the Colosseum could hostmore than 50,000 spectators. It contained a velarium, alarge awning that was used to protect spectators fromsevere weather, and a podium where the Emperor andother important people sat. The name of the Colosseummay have been derived from the Colossus of Nero, anearby gilt bronze statue of Emperor Nero.

Gladiatorial battles, in which two men fought to thedeath, were the main attraction at the Colosseum. Glad-iators who were badly wounded were allowed to surren-der their fate to the crowd. However, the Emperor wasthe ultimate judge a thumbs up from him meant thewounded gladiator would live, while a thumbs downsealed his fate.

Of all the monuments that encapsulate the tension between various Gods andreligions in Ancient Rome, none is as evocative as the Pantheon, located in thePiazza della Rotonda. The first structure was built on this spot between 27and 25 BC by Marcus Agrippa, and was intended to be a Roman temple ofall the Gods. More than a century later (between AD 118 and 125) Emperor Hadrianbuilt a new temple, which is the one that stands today.

The most remarkable architectural features of the Pantheon include the dome, believedto be the widest one of its type in Europe, the large bronze doors (which have been re-cast), the heavyweight walls, which are more than six metres (20 feet) thick, and thetombs of two of Italys monarchs Vittorio Emanuele II, who united Italy in 1870, and hisson, Umberto I. But the feature that gives the Pantheon a surreal, almost otherworldlyquality is the oculus, a characteristic of Byzantine and neoclassical architecture. Watchingshafts of sunlight stream through the oculus on a clear day, its easy to imagine the spellthis temple cast over worshipping Romans in ancient times.

S haped like a mini-Colosseum, this arcaded theatre is, in fact, older than Em-peror Vespasians amphitheatre, although it could host only between 11,000and 20,000 spectators in comparison to the Colosseums 50,000 or more.Begun by Julius Caesar, it was completed by his successor Augustus in aboutAD 13. He named it Teatro di Marcello in honour of his nephew and son-in-law Mar-cellus, who had died in 23 BC, aged only 19.

During the Middle Ages, the theatre was used as a fortress by the rich Savelli family, and in the 16th century, a grand palace was built on the ruins of the original theatrefor the Orsini family. Today, the theatre is a shadow of its former self, but it shouldntbe overlooked owing to its importance as one of Romes oldest ancient monuments

Bollywood reacts to the Mumbai gang-rape

The recent gang-rape of a Mumbai photo-journalist has sent shockwaves all over the city. Subhash K Jha caught up with a section ofBollywood personalities to get their reactions on the incident.

This ghastly incident is a wake-up call for all Mum-baikars who revel in calling our city the safest inIndia. The new rape law has not instilled any fear be-cause of lack of faith in law and order. We need totackle rape at many levels. Theres a deep-rootedmisogyny and sexual assault is being used as an in-strument of control and power so that women are de-nied freedom.

    SHABANA AZMI

Until recently, I was always proud ofMumbai. It was vibrant yet safe, buzzingwith activity at all hours, alive and throb-bing with excitement. This news comes asa shocker. I hope the victim will be healedand fine. I felt worse for the fact that sheis a photographer, so she may be con-nected to our film industry. I cant imaginehow painful and traumatic this must be forher and her family. I hope the people whodid it are punished severely, so that thenext potential rapist will stop short in histracks.

    JUHI CHAWLA

Is there anything left to be said or done? Haventwomen like me who are supposed to have clout anda voice said it all during the Nirbhaya incident? Weneed to look for remedial solutions to the horrendousatmosphere of uncertainty and fear that women haveto face. It is also time we took some drastic steps to counterthe situation. While fast-track courts and specialcourts are no doubt a solution, they are still a time-consuming process. A better solution is to try offend-ers in crimes against women outside the courts andthen just get rid of them. I am sorry if I sound radicaland too drastic but the time for pleasant pontificationis over. Some of us may think we have a voice because werecelebrities. But how much does that voice really mat-ter? During the Nirbhaya case I spoke to so manypeople in power. Everywhere I was stonewalled by5-year plans. Dont they realise that there will be 500other awful crimes against women in the next fiveyears?

    NOSTALGIA

The question we should all be asking our-selves is not about Mumbai alone. But isIndia safe for women? Our men needemancipation. Our laws and the convictionfor crimes against women need to becomemuch more stringent and timely. Men whoperpetrate crimes against women shouldbe punished swiftly and severely.

    DIYA MIRZA

Mumbai is not safe for women anymore. Sofar I felt that Mumbai was getting unsafe be-cause of the growing number of slums in thecity. But crime against women is on the risefor no given reason. I dont think its safe fora lone woman to travel in Mumbai even bypublic transportation after dark.

    RAVEENA TANDON

How does one know that this was the onlyrape incident that happened? There may beso many others that are not reported. So farwe thought it was just Delhi! I feel the day thiscountrys men are educated to respectwomen and stop treating them as mere ob-jects, the rape incidents may come down.

    TAPSEE PANNU

It is very disheartening and extremely upset-ting. But why should we restrict our concern toDelhi or Mumbai? All over the country, measuresshould be taken to secure the safety of women.

    URMILA MATONDKAR

I am absolutely horrified. I enjoy going out inthe night but now I am scared going out in myown city where I have lived all my life. I neverexpected Mumbai of all the cities to becomea home for such horrific incidents.

    AMYRA DASTUR

When I moved to Mumbai from London, I felt proudto announce that I was living in the safest city in theworld. Today the joke is on me. I am ashamed at whatis happening in Mumbai. For an atrocity of this mag-nitude to take place in broad daylight is shocking.Rape occurs in every part of the world, but it seemsmost gruesome in India. What fuels these attacks isthe lack of fear for the law. Mumbai is not what itused to be even five years ago!

We used to always be proud of being safe in our city. But now its allchanged with the demographics changing and people coming in fromall over. There is no alternative to check the rise in crime against womenother than harsh punishment. This incident should wake up the spirit ofMumbai. We should, in some influential way, punish each one of thecriminals. An incident like this makes me sad and angry no matter whereit happens.

Now after this horrific in-cident I am appalled and disgusted. The biggest culprit is the legal sys-tem. It does not instill fear in the perpetrator. Punishment for rape doesnot even qualify as punishment and the time taken to punish the rapistis laughable. Now when I look back I shudder to think back to all thetimes when I dropped my young hairdresser at the nearest cab at 4 amafter pack-up.

    Om Puris heads for

The 100 Foot Journey with Helen Mirren

With due respects to Irrfan Khan, OmPuri remains our most prolific andprominent international import fromIndian cinema. Last week Om secretly flew toThailand to play a judge in another interna-tional project entitled The Traffickers.

The film is directed by British cinematographerLarry Smith. Om was specially requested to doa days work and the films producers would nottake no for an answer.

Says Om, It was a sequence where two young-sters are on trial for drug trafficking. Theywanted me to play the judge. It was just a dayswork and they were very sure that they wantedme for the role. This was the cinematographersfirst film as a director and I didnt want to in-

convenience him. So I decided to go ahead.

Puri insists that he never looks at the length ofa role, as long as he is convinced that the roleis written keeping him in mind. It could be adays work or it could be a full-length role likethe one in my next international project. It shouldbe challenging and it should be meant for me.

At the moment, Puri is all taken up with his full-fledged role in The 100 Foot Journey, in whichhe plays the lead opposite no less than themulti-award winning Dame Helen Mirren. Es-caping the wrath of a marriage gone horriblywrong, the veteran actor is all set to head forthe small French town of Albi for the shoot.

One doesnt know how the distinguished Britishactress feels about working with one of ourown, but we have a lot to be proud of. More-over the film is being directed by the very pro-lific Lasse Hailstorm.

Hailstrom has to his credit such remarkable filmsas The Cider House Rules, An Unfinished Lifeand Safe Haven. He has directed 35 films, most of them very successful. This is not a smallfilm. As for Helen Mirren, she is legendary onthe British stage and in cinema. I am very happyto be working with a co-star who can challengethe best out of me, says Om with pride.

Om sheds light on his part, I play a man whohas lost his wife and property in the Mumbairiots. He leaves the country and lives in Londonfor five years. Then he travels to other parts ofEurope until he finally settles down in a smallFrench town called Albi. Thats where wereshooting the film.

Helen and Om play owners of two rival restau-rants across the road from one another in Albi.Om is excited about playing the role of arestaurateur, Ive been fond of cooking fromthe time I was very young. I make the usualmeals and all kinds of biryanis and kebabs.Trust me, when I was offered the role they didnt

know I could cook. But now I wonder if HelenMirren can cook. If she cant, Id be happy toteach her some Indian dishes.

Says Om, The film gets its title from the 100feet that separate Helens restaurant from mine.We are actually shooting in Albi and I am veryexcited because I will be staying in my ownrented apartment, doing my own cooking dur-ing the shooting. The change of country and cli-mate would do me good.

The 100 Foot Journey is not the first interna-tional film that Om will be shooting while stay-ing in a rented apartment. Whenever Ivedone international films, Ive preferred to livein rented apartments rather than hotels. For thisparticular project, the producers gave me achoice of five apartments. I chose one that wasin the countryside close to the location where wewould be shooting.

Om is very pleased by the teams meticulousapproach. Theyve informed me that my namewould come second in the credit titles afterHelen Mirren. They are trying to get an equallyformidable actress to play the other femalelead. I am happy to be working in a film wheremy co-star is someone whose work I admire. Idont get to do that too often in India.

Looking back, Om feels he has been lucky withhis international projects. Ive played the leadin international films like East Is East, My Son theFanatic and West Is West. And even if Ive notplayed the protagonist in some projects, myscenes have always been with the most impor-tant actors in the film. I had the pleasure andprivilege of working with Ben Kingsley inGandhi, Patrick Swayze in The City Of Joy,Steve Coogan in The Parole Officer, Tom Hanksin Charlie Wilsons War, Jack Nicholson in Wolf,Val Kilmer in The Ghost & The Darkness andnow Helen Mirren in The 100 Foot Journey. Idont know what these great actors feel aboutworking with me. But for me, working with themhas been an honour, privilege and pleasure.

He is among the few Indian actors who is being sought after in international proj-ects for his immense talent and versatility. After playing the lead in internationalfilms like East Is East, My Son The Fanatic and West Is West, Om Puri will now beseen in a full-fledged role with the famed Dame Helen Mirren in The 100 Foot

Journey. Subhash K Jha finds out more.

In this one hour crime thriller, Anil Kapoor plays the role of an anti terroristunit chief named Jai Singh Rathod.

Saif Ali Khan was rather amused when a journalist recently told himthat he had been tagged as a jinx for the new heroines he launchedin his banner. Saif had earlier cast Giselle Monteiro as a parallel leadin Love Aaj Kal, after which he had launched Diana Penty in Cocktail. The girls have not bagged any films thereafter. Says Saif, Some people love to jump to conclusions and tag othersalong. These heroines were cast because their personalities suited therole. Maybe they did not get the right directors like Imtiaz Ali andHomi Adjania to cast them again. When the right role comes alongthe directors will definitely take their call.

Referring to the jinx tag, Saif laughs, Bollywood is a large industry, theres enough work here for everyone. While someone may call mea jinx, some others say that I am plain lucky for them

    FACE TO FACE

Your latest release Shuddh Desi Romance, deals with the subject of a live-in relationshipin a small town of North India. Dont you thinkthe concept is rather far-fetched? I dont think so. In the film, I hail from a small towncalled Ambala, where live-in relationships are areality. There are so many taboo subjects and sit-uations that are quite normal in real life. I am notsaying live-in relationships should become thenorm. But they do exist. Youngsters are indulgingin it. Gender equations have changed andShuddh Desi Romance reflects that change.

What are your views on live-in relationships?I have no problems about live-in relationships. Forme the most important factor in a relationship isthe person with whom I am in love with. It doesnot matter whether he is short, fat, tall or lean. Hehas to love me just as intensely as I love him. One-sided love is a big no for me. Also, I believe thatthere is very little difference between a live-incouple and a married couple, except for the factthat a married couple can have babies wheneverthey so desire. Everything else is the same.

How comfortable were you doing the cosy andintimate scenes with Sushant Singh Rajput inthe film? I treat a kissing and intimate scene the way I treatany other scene. It's a very clinical process on theset. Your full attention has to be on your expres-sions and body language in a scene when yourdirector is shouting at you and you have to per-form in front of your cast and crew. With Sushant,

I had a good time working with him, as both of usfollow the same work pattern. For me what mat-ters is the quality of work in my films. I have noqualms doing kissing or intimate scenes, when theyare important for the storyline.

You seem to have gone for an image makeoverin the film by going ultra glamorous for therole? Was it a deliberate decision? It is not as if someone was holding a gun to myhead and asking me to get glamorous. I merelywanted to find out how well I could fit into aglamorous image and this film seemed to be idealfor it. I decided that I would end up getting boreddoing the same bindaas roles in film after film.

Is that the reason why you decided not to signtoo many films after Ishaqzaade?Post Ishaqzaade, I became very choosy about myroles and did not sign any films because I did notwant to do similar roles. So I did not sign anythingfor the next eight months. Even my parents startedasking me what I was up to. But I needed the timeas the directors with whom I wanted to work werealso busy. Finally I was offered the films that I waslooking for.

Were you afraid of being typecast? I am very particular that I do not want to be type-cast. One of the reasons why I opted for ShuddhDesi Romance was the fact that the character wascompletely different from the chirpy, aggressivegirl I played in Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl and Ishaqza-ade. Even in my forthcoming film, Hasee Toh

Phasee, people will see me in a very differentavatar. On the other hand, Shaad Alis Kill Dil willsee me going all glamourous once again. Then thereis Habib Sir (Faizal)s film with Aditya Roy Kapoor. So I am very happy and comfortable in my ownspace.

So how do you take a call on choosing the rightkind of roles? I would say producer Aditya Chopra and directorManeesh Sharma are my sounding boards. They arethe people who know what suits me the best thoughI am the one who takes the final call. Im proud to sayIve made a place for myself in the industry. Ive juststarted and the roles of substance are coming myway. I want to do as much work as possible.

Are you open to doing item numbers on screen? Why not? If I can perform drunken, kissing scenes andlove-making scenes why not an item number? Its allabout dancing and I love to dance. I think its utterrubbish that item songs commodify women. If somepeople feel that way, then they should not watch filmsthat address the question of sexuality.

Lastly, how do you feel about the constant com-parisons between you and your cousin Priyanka? I do find it irritating at times. Priyanka is senior to meand working in the industry for the last 12 years. Ilook up to her but I concentrate on myself. I want todo a better job than what I did yesterday. This yearour films released on the same day and a lot wasbeing written about it. Sometimes we have a heartylaugh over what is speculated about us.

    STRAIGHT TALK

The new season of KBC has begun with abang. How are you enjoying it? Thats right. KBC has begun on a great newnote. The format is the same -questions areasked and correct answers are being re-warded, but there are some very interestingcosmetic changes. The set is a stunningly newproduct, the winning amount has gone up to Rs7 crores, the lifelines have been increased to5, of which 4 can be used in a novel interestingmanner. The participants are definitely enjoy-ing it.

Bollywood is currently going through a veryprogressive phase, with some innovativestories and ideas. Which films have im-pressed you in recent times?I agree that Indian cinema is going through acatharsis, opening up to experimentation andfresh talent. Films like Paan Singh Tomar, VickyDonor, Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Lootera,Ranjhaana, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, D-Day,Madras Caf and others, have been impressivein recent times. Along with this, is the re-emer-gence of popular cinema, creating revenue fig-ures that were unheard of earlier. What awonderful period we are all witnessing. All thiscan be attributed to a maturing audience.

Talking of your latest film Satyagraha, it ad-dresses the need to clean our society of cor-ruption. How far do you think cinema can bea tool of social reform?Cinema is a powerful medium, it makes pow-erful impressions. Indian Cinema has alwaysconformed to the practice of delivering poeticjustice within three hours, which is the time spanof the film. In our films, the wrong is invariablypunished, evil is destroyed and culprits arebrought to book. A film is the vision of its makerand if it also manages to create awareness, itis welcome and laudable. Whether a particu-lar film is made with the sole intent of bringingsocial reform, is a question that needs to be putto the maker. There are many colleagues whohave very strong beliefs on the content they as-sociate themselves with, and pursue their ac-tivism through the films or art forms theyproduce or are a part of. They are brave andI applaud them. I am not so brave and do notpossess such strong activist sensibilities.

In your earlier interviews you have statedthat you are averse to the idea of getting intopolitics once again. Would you ever have achange of heart? I will not ever change my stance about politics. However, I shall not shy away from serving thecountry in any other way it wishes me to.

An imposter recently posted a fake videowhich showed you endorsing a recommen-dation for Narendra Modi as a prime minis-terial candidate. How do you fight suchduplicity? As public figures, one must be prepared for

such occurrences. Once you understand that, itis a matter of either rebuking it or taking ap-propriate action. In this particular matter, it wasthe infringement of copyright and its misuse. Iam not concerned about the reason or the pur-pose but I am against the manner of thedefamatory misuse of such social media.

What are your views on the safety of womenin this country? Do you feel that post theNirbhaya case in Delhi and now the Mumbaigang-rape incident, laws pertaining to vio-lence against women need to get more strin-gent?The spontaneous public response on the streetsof Delhi and in other parts of the country didcause the system to take note of and provideimmediate action on the unfortunate Nirbhayaincident. Similarly the police were quick to ap-prehend the culprits in the recent Mumbai case.Severe punishment is no doubt a deterrent butthe legal system has its own procedural com-pulsions. But the question is whether all this canprovide the much required safety for womenin our country. This is only possible when thereis change in society.

How do you think this can be brought about?I think it is very important to inculcate moralsand principles in youngsters from a very earlyage. It is also important to look at women withrespect and dignity. Women are half thestrength of a nation, they cannot be lookedupon as mere objects of desire, and this is whatthe polity needs to be educated on. Educatethe woman in a home and the entire family getseducated. Religion has given the female thehonour of a Devi (Goddess) in many powerfulforms. It is time people understood that philos-ophy and conducted themselves accordingly.

There is an orthodox school of thought thatadvises women to exercise caution whiletravelling in public places?Putting restrictions of any kind on women is notthe solution. The women in our country need tobe free of such apprehensions. They must havethe confidence to move around without fear ofany danger. The system shall always have itslimitations, the police cannot be everywhereand the law shall take its course. It is the peoplewho need to change their mind set. Societyneeds to take on the responsibility of the pro-tector in such heinous crimes.

As an icon and a role model how importantis it for you to maintain a decorous, uprightand infallible image in public? I am neither an icon nor a role model. I am sim-ply a very proud citizen of my country andshall always endeavour to remain decorousand upright. I cannot say I am infallible, for weare all human and succumb to faults. But, iffaulted, I shall follow what the constitution andthe law of the land directs me to.

is all about being classicand chic. I am very particular about the wayI dress up because your personality is also re-flected by your attire and the way you carryyourself.

    If you are notcomfor table

about what you are wearing, it shows on yourface and your gait. It is important that youwear your designer outfits with an attitudeand that is entirely up to the person whowears them. If you do not have the attitude, youd rather not wear outfits that you are notcut out for.

I think it was inthe 70s and 80s.

Those were the days when everyone was highon fashion and new fashion statements were

being made. My mother used to give me valu-able tips and I inculcated them in my day-to-day life. Today we have a lot of designers, unlike that period, who are experimentingwith new styles.

It is a pair ofblue denims and

I alwaysmake it a point to have black dresses in mywardrobe for last minute parties. When I amflummoxed and dont know what to wear, myblack dress is of great help. I also keep alovely white sari handy for a special occasion.I think these are the two most essential outfitsin the cupboard.

They are Au-drey Hepburn and the evergreen GayatriDevi. They are classic and elegant no one canmatch up to them. From the younger genera-tion I like Jennifer Aniston, Princess Rania ofJordan and Victoria Beckham.

    I believe thatthe lesser ac-

cessories you wear, the better you can carryyourself. It is important not to overdo things. If you are wearing a neck piece, then youshould avoid chunky earrings or a glitzy belt.On the other hand, a simple stylish watch canwork wonders for your outfit.
